School-Based Speech-Language Pathologist's Perceptions Of Sensory Food Aversions In Children, Ellen Monroe May 2020

School-Based Speech-Language Pathologist's Perceptions Of Sensory Food Aversions In Children, Ellen Monroe

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Sensory Food Aversions occur frequently in children who are likely to appear on Speech-Language Pathologist’s (SLP’s) caseloads. The lack of research regarding intervention for Sensory Food Aversions in schools and the assertion of a gap in school-based services for children with feeding disorders was a significant indicator for the need of the study. A quantitative, descriptive, exploratory research design was selected using a self-developed questionnaire in order to exploreschool-based SLP’s perceptions of their knowledge and skills related to Sensory Food Aversions, as well as determine resources available for working with this population. Findings from the study suggest a need for …

Sulforaphane Protects Against Ethanol-Induced Apoptosis And Teratogenesis Through Epigenetic Modulation Of Anti-Apoptotic Genes., Yihong Li

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Background. Ethanol-induced excessive apoptosis in neural crest cells (NCCs), a multipotent progenitor cell population, is one of the major mechanisms underlying the pathogenesis of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD). However, the molecular mechanisms underlying FASD that results from maternal alcohol exposure during pregnancy are poorly understood. The overall goals of this study are to examine the mechanisms by which ethanol induces apoptosis and malformations in vitro and in vivo, and to develop a nutritional-based approach by using SFN and SFN-rich BSE to prevent FASD through epigenetic modulation. Results. This study demonstrates that ethanol exposure resulted in a significant increase …

Development Of In Vitro Models To Study The Rapid Extraintestinal Dissemination Of Salmonella., Adarsh Gopinath May 2020

Development Of In Vitro Models To Study The Rapid Extraintestinal Dissemination Of Salmonella., Adarsh Gopinath

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Salmonella appears in the bloodstream of mice in as little as 15 minutes after oral inoculation and establishes persistent colonies in the spleen and liver. While its pathway to blood is undetermined, this phenomenon is dependent on the activity of Salmonella pathogenicity island 2 (SPI-2) coded type III secretion system (T3SS) and CD18+ phagocytes. We hypothesize that dendritic cells associated with the basal face of the gut epithelium, that are naturally migratory and known to sample for luminal antigens directly transport Salmonella to the bloodstream. This process comprises of at least two phases, dissociation and reverse transmigration. We define dissociation …

Efficient Conditional Inactivation Of Rdh10 Reveals Important Role Of Retinoic Acid During Lung Branching Morphogenesis., Nhut Quang Huy Tran

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Birth defects are complicated pathological processes. Many birth defects can be traced back to disrupted regulation of molecular signaling pathways during embryogenesis. One of the most important gene regulatory factors during embryo development is retinoic acid (RA). However, studying the specific roles of RA in each organ during embryogenesis in vivo is challenging. The Sandell laboratory has a conditional mutant mouse model that can potentially be used for studying the role of RA during embryogenesis by inducing stage-specific RA deficiency. This model allows retinol dehydrogenase 10 (Rdh10), a gene required for RA production, to be inactivated at a …

Encephalization In Commensal Raccoons: A Unique Test Of The Cognitive Buffer Hypothesis, Peter M. Anderson May 2020

Encephalization In Commensal Raccoons: A Unique Test Of The Cognitive Buffer Hypothesis, Peter M. Anderson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study investigated selective pressures associated with encephalization in mammals and discussed broader implications. Relative brain size as measured by EQ (Encephalization Quotient) was compared between ecological categories. Omnivores had higher average EQ than ecological specialists. Since specialists are disproportionately affected by extinction events, selection for ecological generalism is proposed as encephalization mechanism. This mechanism may reinforce the more widely known Cognitive Buffer Hypothesis (CBH)—the idea that possessing relatively large brains has buffered lineages against environmental change. CBH is tested here by comparing EQs in Procyon lotor (raccoon) in urban and rural environments. CBH predicts that raccoons in the most …

Iron In Urban Air Pollution, Joseph R. Salazar Jan 2020

Iron In Urban Air Pollution, Joseph R. Salazar

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The processes by which iron is solubilized are largely unknown. There are three hypotheses on how iron is soluble: 1) iron is thought to undergo an acid based solubilization process, 2) iron undergoes an oxidation/reduction process and reduces iron(III) to the more soluble iron(II), and 3) iron is bound to organic molecules, which solubilizes it. The 3 hypotheses on iron water-solubilized are explored by presenting two individual studies.

The first study investigates iron directly from car exhaust. Exhaust particles were collected from 32 vehicles. Iron solubility in these samples ranged from 0%-82% with the average iron solubility being 30%. X-ray …
