It is the preliminary phase of a seven-month, semi-longitudinal, quantitative project investigating relationships between cropping patterns, household time allocation, and infant nutrition. This preliminary ethnography was undertaken by the author and two field assistants, from February to April 1987, in rural Oyo and Kwara, Nigeria. Infant mortality is high …

Electrophoretic, Morphometric, And Meristic Comparisons Of Walleye Broodstock In South Dakota, Chantel M. Waltner Jan 1988

Electrophoretic, Morphometric, And Meristic Comparisons Of Walleye Broodstock In South Dakota, Chantel M. Waltner

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Electrophoretic and morphological variability among walleyes collected from three upper Missouri River tributaries and a glacial lake in South Dakota was investigated, and an upper Mississippi River stock was electrophoretically compared to the South Dakota stocks. Allele frequencies of two (MDH-3, GMP-3) of the twenty-one loci examined differed significantly (P<0. 05) between South Dakota and Mississippi River walleyes. Contingency chi-square tests of allele frequencies showed homogeneity among walleyes from the Missouri River tributaries, and significant (P<0.001) heterogeneity (P<0.001) at the GMP-3 locus between Missouri River and glacial lake stocks. A dendogram derived from Nei unbiased genetic identity values produced separate branchings for the South Dakota and Mississippi River walleyes. All four walleye stocks in South Dakota were morphologically variable, although no one character could be used as a diagnostic tool to separate the stocks visually. Discriminant function analysis of eight of the most powerful discriminatory characters was successful in correctly classifying walleyes by origin with 83-97% accuracy.

Expression Of Leptospira Biflexa Serovar Patoc Antigens In Escherichia Coli Ja221, Joann Willgohs Mogard

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The genus Leptospira belongs to the order Spirochaetales and the family Leptospiraceae. Currently, there are two Leptospira species: L. interrogans, which includes the pathogenic or parasitic organisms; and L. biflexa, all of which are saphrophytic, free-living leptospires. Approximately 240 different serovars, the final taxonomic subdivision of these organisms, have been reported based on antigenic analysis via microscopic agglutination and cross-agglutination absorption tests. These serovars are categorized into serogroups (approximately 60) due to antigenic cross-reactivity. In addition to antigenic analysis, a number of biological and biochemical tests are used to distinguish the two species including: growth at low temperatures, sensitivity to …

Availability Of Elemental Selenium To Plants, Shu-Chen Tseng Jan 1988

Availability Of Elemental Selenium To Plants, Shu-Chen Tseng

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Selenium has been found to be both essential for and toxic to animals and humans. Plants make up the main source of selenium for animals which are the food source for humans. Therefore, the selenium content in soils and plants is of interest. The uptake and accumulation of selenium by plants is governed by many environmental factors such as plant species, soil pH, soil type, the chemical form of the selenium and the presence of other ions. The most important factors regulating selenium uptake by plants are the concentration and the form of selenium present in the soil. Many authors …

In Vitro Rescue Of Helianthus Annuus Embryos By Ovule Culture, John C. Volin Jan 1988

In Vitro Rescue Of Helianthus Annuus Embryos By Ovule Culture, John C. Volin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Interspecific hybridization between the cultivated sunflower, Helianthus annuus L., and other Helianthus species is an important aspect of sunflower improvement, because it extends the array of genes available for use in breeding programs. Sunflower species have demonstrated resistance to many pests that affect the cultivated sunflower. Oil content and quality may also be improved through interspecific hybridization, as Helianthus species are sources of genetic variation for these traits. Attempts to cross H. annuus with sixteen other Helianthus species were only 40 % successful. It is generally assumed that failure of interspecific hybridization in sunflowers is due to abortion of the …

Hard Water : Occurrence, Health Effects, And Consumer Drinking Practices In Brookings And Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Hock Chin Wong Jan 1988

Hard Water : Occurrence, Health Effects, And Consumer Drinking Practices In Brookings And Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Hock Chin Wong

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In light of the probable benefits of drinking hard water, it would be anticipated that wherever hard water is available, dwellings would be plumbed to provide this water to the drinking tap. However, casual surveys in certain South Dakota communities had revealed that the plumbing is arranged in some dwellings so that drinking water available at the tap has been subjected to on-site softening. As a result, the water consumer has not only been deprived of the benefits of drinking hard water, but also subjected to the health hazards of drinking high-sodium water from ionexchange softeners. The primary objective of …

Reproductive Performance Of Anestrous Crossbred Ewes Subjected To Artificial Photoperiod Or Melatonin, Kelly Ann Weiskircher Jan 1988

Reproductive Performance Of Anestrous Crossbred Ewes Subjected To Artificial Photoperiod Or Melatonin, Kelly Ann Weiskircher

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Sheep are seasonal breeders exhibiting estrus in the fall with the decreasing daylength. This characteristic limits the reproductive performance of the ewe. With the decreasing daylength, melatonin is produced by the pineal gland. This hormone is thought to trigger the onset of estral activity. The study herein attempted to alter this seasonal fertility pattern by subjecting ewes to artificial photoperiod and through the oral administration of melatonin and a melatonin ear implant. The lambs in this experiment were born during late fall which is more favorable than the normal lambing season for the survival rate and growth performance of the …

Production Of Triploid Rainbow Trout For Evaluation In South Dakota Waters, Jeff C. Dillon

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In September 1986, approximately 50,000 rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri) eggs were fertilized and subjected to heat shocks to prevent expulsion of the second polar body, theoretically resulting in triploid embryos. Heat shocks were at 26 and 28°c, began 10, 20, 30, or 40 min after fertilization, and lasted for 10 or 20 min for a total of 16 treatments. Another 25,000 eggs served as controls and were handled identically but at a normal water temperature of 12°c. Cumulative hatching rates for eggs that were heat-shocked at 26 and 28° were 64 and 50%, respectively, compared to control eggs which had …

The Effect Of Application Variables On Tank Mixtures Of Quizalofop And Bentazon, Eirc L. Larson Jan 1988

The Effect Of Application Variables On Tank Mixtures Of Quizalofop And Bentazon, Eirc L. Larson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Selective herbicides are highly specific chemicals. They must control weeds at rates which do not injure crops, they must leave no residue in the soil to injure succeeding crops, and they must leave no hazardous residue on crops. It has been extremely difficult for researchers to develop selective herbicides that adequately meet all of these goals. For example, an ideal herbicide spray effectively controls grass and broadleaf weeds simultaneously. Therefore, when farmers are plagued with a variety of weeds including both annual grasses and broadleaf weeds, there is seldom a single economical herbicide available that will completely control the weed …

Paraquat was administered to male, Sprague-Dawley rats via continous infusion, at dosage rates of 250 (LoPQ) or 500 (HiPQ) nmoles/hr for seven days. The purpose was to characterize the effects of prolonged, low blood levels of the herbicide on selected lung biochemical parameters. The efficacy of putrescine as an inhibitor of pulmonary paraquat accumulation, in vivo, was assessed in these animals by I.V. coinfusion of 2500 or 5000 nmoles putrescine/hr. Dose-dependent levels of both paraquat and putrescine were achieved by 18 hours and were maintained throughout the exposure period. Terminal lung paraquat content was also dose-dependent and up to 18-fold …

Adaptation Of Striped Bass To Sea Water Following Direct Transfer From Freshwater: Morphological, Biochemical, And Physiological Parameters, Judy A. King May 1987

Adaptation Of Striped Bass To Sea Water Following Direct Transfer From Freshwater: Morphological, Biochemical, And Physiological Parameters, Judy A. King

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

There has been heightened interest in the biology of striped bass (Morone saxatilis) because of increased pollution in their native spawning grounds and because of their extensive use in landlocked sport fisheries. Their euryhalinity makes them an excellent species for osmoregulation studies. The objective of this research was to study the rate of adaptation of striped bass gills to sea water (3% salt) after direct transfer from freshwater using biochemical (ion transport enzyme levels), physiological (chloride efflux), and ultrastructural methods. Striped bass have specialized osmoregulatory cells located on the interlamellar and afferent surfaces of their gill filaments as shown by …

Rainbow Trout Cage Culture Utilizing Different Strains, Stocking Densities, And Feeding Methods In Eastern South Dakota Dugout Ponds, Jay Patrick Maher Jan 1987

Rainbow Trout Cage Culture Utilizing Different Strains, Stocking Densities, And Feeding Methods In Eastern South Dakota Dugout Ponds, Jay Patrick Maher

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri) cage culture techniques were investigated in dugouts as part of a continuing program to evaluate the potential of small-scale, landowner-based aquaculture operations. Trout raised in the study did not reach a marketable size (200 g) due to the short growing season and small size at stocking. No significant (P >0.05) differences in growth were detected between stocking densities of 60, 80, 100, and 120 fish/m³. Demand feeding resulted in significantly greater length (P≤0.01), weight (P≤0.01), and relative weight (P≤0.05) than hand feeding in both years tested. Rainbow trout of the Hildebrand strain reached a significantly greater …

Reciprocal Ovary Transplantation As A Means To Study Reproductive Function In Female Lethal Yellow Mice (A̲Y̲/A̲: C57bl/6j), Gerald Alan Dickens Jan 1987

Reciprocal Ovary Transplantation As A Means To Study Reproductive Function In Female Lethal Yellow Mice (A̲Y̲/A̲: C57bl/6j), Gerald Alan Dickens

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The first study was conducted to determine whether the previously observed reproductive failures in aging obese lethal yellow (AY/a) females are due primarily to: (1) intrinsic defects within AY/a ovaries or (2) systemic defects extrinsic to AY/a ovaries such as sites within the hypothalamus or pituitary gland. A second experiment was conducted to assess uterine capacity in AY/a females. In order to accurately measure uterine capacity in AY/a females, it was necessary to separate uterine effects from embryo (AY/a) effects. Thus by conducting the appropriate ovary transplantations, one could test uterine capacity in AY/a females in the absence of AY/a …

Effect Of Preconditioning On Performance And Health Of Feeder Steers, Janie Katrin Swann Jan 1987

Effect Of Preconditioning On Performance And Health Of Feeder Steers, Janie Katrin Swann

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Ranchers are continuously looking for ways to produce heavier, healthier calves at sale time. There are many on-ranch management practices performed to accomplish this, including early weaning, creep feeding, preconditioning and implanting. However, over time results may be variable. Before deciding on a certain method for handling a calf crop, ranchers must carefully evaluate their own situation, including facilities, labor, feed and pasture conditions. Feedlot operators should also be aware of previous management of calves since preshipment practices may affect performance in the feedlot. In an effort to evaluate the preconditioning program in South Dakota, performance of preconditioned and nonpreconditioned …
