A Study Of Some Physico-Chemical Changes In A Spread-Type Dairy Product During Storage, Alfredo E. Gudeikis

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In the Dairy Science Department at South Dakota State University a new dairy spread product has been developed which has only 50% of the fat content of butter or margarine and 60% of the calorie value of the higher fat products. It is increased in solids content with nonfat milk solids. The purpose· of developing this product was to obtain a new outlet for milk constituents; desirably it was to be one that could regain the market sales which were lost by butter and are now enjoyed by the margarines. The high price of butter compared with the substitute product …

A Historical Analysis And Comparative Classification Of The Use Of Computers In The Typographic Industry, Harvey R. Levenson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Although developments of the past several decades confirm a revolutionary expansion of graphic arts technology, the printing industry has traditionally been known for its lack of technological progress. It is frequently stated that printing techniques, until recently, were considered to be approximately 50 years behind other industries with regard to technological advancement. Such conditions were particularly true in the area of typesetting. To witness the unprogressive implements being used, all one had to do was visit a typica1 composing room entangled with the awkward mechanisms of conventional Linotypes, Intertypes, and other similar typesetting devices. Such composing systems are steadily becoming …

A Comparative Analysis Of Advertising Agencies And Commercial Printing Companies To Determine The Relationship Between Employee Education Level And Implementation Of Participative Decision Making, Richard J. Huff

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The subject of investigation for this study involves a segment of human relations. An understanding of the entire field of human relations is essential for justification of the finding which relate to the particular segment. The area of human relations of concern in this study involves a theory often called “participative decision making.” It is the theory which is dependent upon other closely related areas. Motivation, satisfaction and other factors which are prevalent in personal fulfillment are important things to consider in relation to the theory. Because of interdependence, one must relate research concerning participative decision making to other areas …

A Critical Comparison Of The Restitution Motifs Of The Campbells (1809-1830) And The Anabaptists (1524-1560), Richard Thomas Hughes Aug 1967

A Critical Comparison Of The Restitution Motifs Of The Campbells (1809-1830) And The Anabaptists (1524-1560), Richard Thomas Hughes

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Many students have been impressed with the restitutionist character of the Radical Reformation and have observed certain similarities between that movement and the Restoration movement in America. The primary problem and purposes of this study are therefore twofold: (1) Were the two movements really similar, and if so, to what extent? (2) If both groups started with essentially the same presuppositions regarding the Scriptures, the church that was to be restored, and the method of restitution, how should one account for any differences that existed in practice?

The Nature And The Influence Of The Work Of The Information And Education Section, South Dakota Department Of Game, Fish And Parks, Edward Riedl Mar 1967

The Nature And The Influence Of The Work Of The Information And Education Section, South Dakota Department Of Game, Fish And Parks, Edward Riedl

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This paper deals with a study of an organization whose responsibility is to inform and educate people. This is a study of the program of the Information and Education Section, South Dakota Department of Game, Fish and Parks. There is much confusion connected with the terms “public relations,” “publicity,” and “public information.” Definitions of these terms will result in a better understanding of this study. Emery, Ault and Agee define public relations, “as the planned effort to influence and maintain favorable opinion through acceptable performance, honestly presented, and with reliance on two-way communications.”1 Public relations is also a management function. …

A Follow-Up Study Of South Dakota State University Graduates With A Major In Industrial Arts 1951 Through 1966, Robert Vernon Lee Feb 1967

A Follow-Up Study Of South Dakota State University Graduates With A Major In Industrial Arts 1951 Through 1966, Robert Vernon Lee

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Education is not an end in itself. It is only a means to an end. This end is usually away from the educational institution itself. There are no doubt several methods for evaluating the effectiveness that the educational institution is achieving in its endeavor to prepare its graduates toward the desired goals. The degree of proficiency in the individual subjects can be tested while the student is in school. How the person is doing after graduation is a major part of the true test of his overall education. Evaluation becomes more difficult after the student has graduated. This is due …

The Effect Of Norethandrolone On The Liver Microsomal Enzyme Which Demethylates Aminopyrine, Garrett John Gross Feb 1967

The Effect Of Norethandrolone On The Liver Microsomal Enzyme Which Demethylates Aminopyrine, Garrett John Gross

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

With the introduction of numerous and more complex drugs in medicine annually, the metabolism of drugs by liver microsomal enzymes and factors influencing their metabolism has become a subject of increasing interest. A variety of drugs are metabolized by enzyme systems located in liver microsomes (1). Reactions catalyzed by these enzymes include N-dealkylation, deamination, aromatic hydroxylation, ether cleavage, alkyl chain oxidation, azo link cleavage, sulfoxide formation, and glucuronide formation. The report that 3’-methyl -4- dimethylaminazobenzene, a potent liver carcinogen, did not cause hepatomas in rats when administrated with 3-methylcholanthrene (2) stimulated early investigations to study the effects of various chemical …

The Ecology Of The Nitrogen-Fixing Azotobacter And Klebsiella In Selected South Dakota Lakes, Paul A. Gillespie Feb 1967

The Ecology Of The Nitrogen-Fixing Azotobacter And Klebsiella In Selected South Dakota Lakes, Paul A. Gillespie

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The importance of nitrogen in an aquatic ecosystem is quite well known. Nitrogen, being originally derived from the atmosphere, enters into a complex cycle involving both the plant and animal components of the ecosystem. The nitrogenous compounds of natural waters may be broken down into the main categories according to their source, either allochthones or autochthonous. Allochthones nitrogen is that derived from the outside sources and includes those compounds carried into the lake by precipitation, by surface runoff containing terrestrial nitrogen, or by the inflow of ground water. Autochthonous nitrogenous compounds are those which result from the fixation of elemental …

Supplemental Vitamins In Feed And Water For Growing And Finishing Pigs And Growing Rats, Vernon L. Fritz Feb 1967

Supplemental Vitamins In Feed And Water For Growing And Finishing Pigs And Growing Rats, Vernon L. Fritz

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Vitamins in swine diets have become more important in recent years as swine producers have changed to the confinement method of rearing pigs. When confined, swine are more likely to suffer from nutritional deficiencies, especially a deficiency of vitamins. However, with greater knowledge of nutrition and establishment of vitamin requirements, swine producers are now able to include the essential nutrients (carbohydrates, fats, proteins, minerals and vitamins) and feed additives in a completely mixed diet. This method of feeding swine has been widely accepted since completely mixed diets support excellent gains and feed utilization; however this method of feeding is not …

A Method For Characterizing The Noise Produced By An Agricultural Tractor In Terms Of The Acoustic Power And Directivity, Tom Shepherd Chisholm Jan 1967

A Method For Characterizing The Noise Produced By An Agricultural Tractor In Terms Of The Acoustic Power And Directivity, Tom Shepherd Chisholm

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In agriculture, as in the civic, military and industrial areas, excessive noise is a problem that must be recognized. Tentative criteria have been established that specify the maximum noise levels that people can be exposed to for various time periods without receiving permanent hearing damage. In many cases, the noise produced at the operator’s location by agricultural machines is considerably above the maximum safe level for continuous daily exposure. The seriousness of the problem is further emphasized when it is realized that many young men in their teens are operating agricultural machines. The hearing damage that they receive will be …

The Concept Of The Flapper In The Early Writings Of F. Scott Fitzgerald, Janet Foster Carroll Jan 1967

The Concept Of The Flapper In The Early Writings Of F. Scott Fitzgerald, Janet Foster Carroll

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A curious, but important, relationship exists between the social history of a particular age and the imaginative literature of the same period. The writings in both areas become major sources of knowledge about that era for readers in future generations. The following thesis is the outgrowth, in part, of this interest – an examination of the concept of the flapper in the early works of F. Scott Fitzgerald. For years Fitzgerald has been regarded as the chronicler of his Age. As early as 1920 he was heralded by the public as “Spokesman for the Younger Generation,” and although he seems …

A Bacteriological Study Of Abscesses Of Swine And Cattle, Lawrence Joseph Biever Jan 1967

A Bacteriological Study Of Abscesses Of Swine And Cattle, Lawrence Joseph Biever

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Condemnation of abscessed portions of swine and beef carcasses is an important economic problem to the meat packing industry and, consequently, to the individual stock producer. The Meat Inspection Division of the Agricultural Research Service of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, in its summary of activities from 1955 through 1969 (2), reported that the numbers of abscessed portions from cattle and swine have increased (Table 1 and Figure 1). In this 10-year period the number of abscessed parts condemned in swine increased from 1.4% (1,397,248) of the animals slaughtered to 3.9% (2,660,522). During the same period of time the number …

Hydrogen Sulfide Formation By Escherichia Freundii From Organic Compounds, Martin Bembers Jan 1967

Hydrogen Sulfide Formation By Escherichia Freundii From Organic Compounds, Martin Bembers

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The evolution of hydrogen sulfide by microorganisms has been studied for many years. Until recently, most of the research was in the taxonomical and clinical areas. Much work was done to perfect a cultural medium capable of demonstrating hydrogen sulfide production, using this characteristic to distinguish between groups of organisms. Triple sugar iron agar, Kliglers, lead acetate agar, urea agar base concentrate, and peptone iron medium used today. The extensive investigation was to find medium to show a color change in response to hydrogen sulfide production without toxicity to the growing cells. Hydrogen sulfide producing bacterial have been isolated from …
