Vacuum Dewatering Of Elutriated Wastewater Sludge Conditioned With Lime Sludge, Donald Lee Miller Feb 1968

Vacuum Dewatering Of Elutriated Wastewater Sludge Conditioned With Lime Sludge, Donald Lee Miller

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

One of the primary concerns a community must consider upon adoption of a sludge disposal program is that of operating costs. The operating costs of a vacuum filtration process are relatively high due to the large amounts of chemical coagulants which are generally required to condition the sludge so that it will exhibit its best dewatering characteristics. This project was undertaken to assess the value of lime softening sludge as a conditioning agent for digested sewage sludge preceding vacuum filtration. The sludges studied were obtained from the Sioux Falls Water Treatment Plant and the Sioux Falls Wastewater Treatment Plant. Sioux …

Some Indications Of The Reinforcement Effects Of Cooperative Extension Programs Broadcast From Kota-Tv, Rapid City, South Dakota, A Commercial Television Station, Francis Elizabeth Maierhauser

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study was undertaken in an attempt to determine to what extent commercial television--an example of mass communication—acts as a contributory agent in the process of reinforcing existing learning experiences, and in an attempt to isolate some of the other factors that may act as mediating influences to reinforcing effects. The subjects of this research consisted of' members or the Extension Clubs in Meade County, South Dakota. A second audience of the same approximate size of non-members of Extension Clubs in the same county was used as a control group for purposes of comparison. This problem was chosen for study …

Evaluation Of An Aerated Lagoon System Treating Domestic And Industrial Wastewaters, John Thomas Lowthian Feb 1968

Evaluation Of An Aerated Lagoon System Treating Domestic And Industrial Wastewaters, John Thomas Lowthian

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

As industrial management becomes increasingly aware of' the advantages of processing agricultural products near the source of supply, the rate of industrial growth in rural areas correspondingly seems to accelerate. Many rural communities have already experienced the impact of industrial expansion. The type of industry which processes agricultural products produces large quantities of polluted water and, thereby, imposes a significant load upon the wastewater treatment facilities. This increased loading alters, to some extent, the ecology within the treatment processes employed. The wastewater treatment facilities used by a high percentage of rural communities consist of stabilization ponds. Some unique problems are …

Synthesis Of Deoxy-Glucosamine As A Possible Antibacterial Agent, Theodore Allen Westley Feb 1968

Synthesis Of Deoxy-Glucosamine As A Possible Antibacterial Agent, Theodore Allen Westley

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

An antibacterial agent is a substance which destroys or suppresses bacterial growth or reproduction. The discovery of the antibacterial properties of the sulfonamides in 1935 by Gerhard Domagk began one of the brightest eras in modern anti-bacterial chemotherapy. These drugs have remained useful as antibacterial agents but the introduction of the antibiotics, particularly penicillin, has made the sulfonamides less popular. However, the sulfonamides are effective and are still used today. Antibacterial agents are not characterized by one chemical grouping or a particular mode of action. Phenols and alcohols, for example, act by denaturing protein. Others such as arsenic and the …

Information And Materials For Expanding Adult Homemaking Education In South Dakota, Ramona Hill Warwick

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The writer was concerned with the expressed needs of homemakers in Castlewood for help in solving some of the problems of family living today. It was brought out in the 1963 South Dakota survey by Westby that women of all education levels and age groups were interested in adult homemaking classes. As an instructor of adult homemaking classes at Castlewood High School, the writer became aware of the needs of classroom home economics teachers in planning and conducting adult classes in addition to a full work load. After interviews with home economics teachers having similar experiences, the author wrote to …

Antigenic Relationships Of Diptheroids Isolated From Cattle And Swine, Glenn Elwyn Urevig Feb 1968

Antigenic Relationships Of Diptheroids Isolated From Cattle And Swine, Glenn Elwyn Urevig

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Gram positive, club shaped, pleomorphic bacilli with or without catalase activity are frequently isolated from abscessed clinical materials (Smith and Bodily, 1968). These organisms may be aerobic to microaerophilic to anaerobic (Wilson and Miles, 1964) and are usually regarded as Diphtheroids. Diphtheroids have been defined by Burdon (1958) as members of the genus Corynebacterium other than the diphtheria bacillus Burrows et al . (1963) state that diphtheroids are "microorganisms morphologically similar to and frequently indistinguishable from the diphtheria bacillus." Biever (1967) included as diphtheroid all of the organisms morphologically similar to the genus Actinomyces. Smith et al . (1964) stated …

Program Instruction In Use Of Lithographic Camera, Clayton Ransom Kinney Feb 1968

Program Instruction In Use Of Lithographic Camera, Clayton Ransom Kinney

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Programmed learning is probably as old as mankind. In theory the essentials of this method consist of three major interdependent factors; 1) immediate feedback or knowledge to the learner of the adequacy of the responses, 2) the presenting of material in small enough units to allow rapid assimilation and reinforcement, and 3) the arrangement of such units in a sequence which continues to build upon and reinforce the prior learning. It would be difficult to believe that some of the more apt to teach of any generation would not have capitalized upon such a program in presenting to an apprentice …

Factors Affecting The Seasonality Of Marketing Manufacturing Milk In Eastern South Dakota, Larry Gene Traub Feb 1968

Factors Affecting The Seasonality Of Marketing Manufacturing Milk In Eastern South Dakota, Larry Gene Traub

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The problems involved in the marketing of milk are numerous and often complex. One problem facing both the South Dakota producer and processor is the seasonality in production and marketing of manufacturing milk. This has been a problem of long standing in the dairy industry. The fluid milk industry has made some progress in bringing about a more even flow of milk to the market through the various price incentive programs. Seasonal pricing has played a leading role. Little has been done, however, to alleviate the problem in the manufactured milk segment of the industry. . . . The specific …

Isolation And Characterization Of Fecal Streptococci From Surface Waters In South Dakota, Jerome Edward Tiede Jan 1968

Isolation And Characterization Of Fecal Streptococci From Surface Waters In South Dakota, Jerome Edward Tiede

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Organisms referred to as "fecal streptococci" or "enterococci" have been studied as possible indicators of pathogenic bacteria of fecal origin since their· discovery. In Bergey's Manual of Determinative Bacteriology (1957), the "enterococci" are classified as Streptococcus faecalis, Streptococcus faecalis var. liquefaciens, Streptococcus faecalis var. zyrnogenes and Streptococcus durans. Streptococcus bovis and Streptococcus equinus do not meet all the criteria of the enterococcus group. However, they are found in great numbers in certain fecal material. These organisms, and the”enterococci" are collectively referred to as "fecal streptococci." The unavailability of satisfactory methods and of selective media has prevented the acceptance of these …

Academic Achievement In A Traditional School And An Innovative School, George Heaton Jan 1968

Academic Achievement In A Traditional School And An Innovative School, George Heaton

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Interest in the process of change is not by any means new, but contemporary interest is at an all time high. Why is this true? What circumstances and factors make this interest in change one of the major national issues today? Much of the concern is the -result of the increasing gap between what is known about good educational theory and what is really happening in classrooms. This gap between good educational theory and actual happening in the classroom has always existed and no one is suggesting that it can be completely eliminated. However, is it possible to close part …

Aflatoxicosis In Poultry, John G. Gregoriades Jan 1968

Aflatoxicosis In Poultry, John G. Gregoriades

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The term "aflatoxicosis" is applied to the toxicosis which is produced by "aflatoxin", a poisonous metabolite produced by certain strains of Aspergillus flavus. This toxin is a part of a series of toxins produced by fungi, which may be ingested by livestock, poultry and humans to produce toxigenic effects--the so-called mycotoxicoses. The occurrence of mycotoxicoses are frequent enough considering the prevalence of fungi and their proliferation in nature. They develop under favorable environmental conditions in foods and feeds of plant origin before and after harvest.

Feasibility Of Vacuum Dewatering Of Combined Water Softening And Wastewater Sludges, Michael Gene Sisk Jan 1968

Feasibility Of Vacuum Dewatering Of Combined Water Softening And Wastewater Sludges, Michael Gene Sisk

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

There is an extensive amount of published literature regarding the principles of dewatering by vacuum filtration. However, the review of the literature indicated that very little work has been done regarding the vacuum filtration of combined lime sludge and sewage sludge. The Komline-Sanderson Company, manufacturers of the coil media vacuum filter, relate that several municipalities throughout the country have attempted to dewater combined sludges, but obtained unfavorable results. This appeared to result from incorrect proportioning of the two sludges and possibly the procedures used in conditioning the sludges prior to and after combining. Contrary to this, two cities in Nebraska, …

Variation Between Boars In Semen Characteristics And Fertility, Wayne L. Singleton Jan 1968

Variation Between Boars In Semen Characteristics And Fertility, Wayne L. Singleton

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The most important factor influencing the income from a livestock breeding herd is the number of offspring produced per female per year. This number varies between herds and species and is influenced by such factors as disease, nutrition, genetics, management, climate, and endocrine balance. It has been estimated that over 30% of the potential offspring from the sow are lost between ovulation and the thirtieth day of pregnancy. It would be of great economic value to reduce this loss both in terms of increased number of offspring per pregnancy and increased number of offspring per year. The sow has long …

The Counselor's Role As Perceived By Administrators, Counselors, And Teacher-Counselors In South Dakota High Schools, Darlene Mulder Prashar

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The role of the counselor in the secondary school is not always well understood. Confusion and poor communication about the degree of responsibility for various activities may interfere with effective work. Guidance programs in secondary schools are confronted with many problems. Possibly, the lack of understanding of the role of the counselor, plus the opinions and attitudes of the school personnel, are hindering the effectiveness of guidance programs in many of the secondary schools of South Dakota. With the Wrenn Report, the American Personnel and Guidance Association gave impetus to guidance programs in American schools by better defining the school …

Tissue Culture Of Carrot Leaf On Three Media Using The Growth Regulator Tordon, John O'Connell Jan 1968

Tissue Culture Of Carrot Leaf On Three Media Using The Growth Regulator Tordon, John O'Connell

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The process of tissue culture has been in existence for several years and it has been carried out in a variety of ways (31). This study was made on the culture of carrot leaves (var. Danvers) with the use of various media and the auxin Tordon in an attempt to induce embryo formation in liquid culture. It is generally considered that Haberlandt in 1902, was the first person to introduce plant tissue culture. White (36) does not consider this to be the case, however. According to White, Haberlandt and the investigators that followed him, really cultured organs. He considers tissue …
