Mathematical Method For Determining Stable Geometric Configurations In Aromatic Hydrocarbon Molecules, Richard A. Marsh Jan 1965

Mathematical Method For Determining Stable Geometric Configurations In Aromatic Hydrocarbon Molecules, Richard A. Marsh

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

We are concerned with determining the stable geometric configurations of aromatic hydrocarbon molecules. This is an important problem since the molecule’s physical and chemical properties are dependent on the way in which different groups of the molecule are spatially oriented. Many symmetric aromatic molecules with attached phenyl groups avoid the planar structure which would maximize the resonance energy because of steric hindrance. Energy considerations indicate that the best way for reducing the steric interactions is for one or more of the phenyl groups to be rotated out of the plane of the molecule about the bond joining it to the …

Student Attitudes Toward The Printing Industry In Two Chicago Area High Schools, Frank Arthur Ouseley Jan 1965

Student Attitudes Toward The Printing Industry In Two Chicago Area High Schools, Frank Arthur Ouseley

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Before considering the importance of attitudinal measurement it would be helpful to define what an attitude is and subsequently how this definition relates to the measurement of attitudes. Ingles, after an intensive investigation concerning the fruitfulness of teaching history, concluded that the attitudes developed through the study of history are probably considerable more important than the specific knowledge that the student has acquired during his training. The implications from his rather generalized interpretations are of unlimited importance. Another reason why attitudinal measurement is important concerns the effects which attitudes have on the learning process. Learning takes place only when information …

A Study Of The Image Of Vocational Education In South Dakota Schools, Melvin T. Simek Jan 1965

A Study Of The Image Of Vocational Education In South Dakota Schools, Melvin T. Simek

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Under the provisions of the Smith-Hughes Act and supplementary acts comprehensive program of vocational education have been developed. Although much has been accomplished, existing programs need to be expanded and new programs developed if vocational education is to be made available to all who can profit from the instruction. Vocational education does not take the place of general academic education, but rather supplements and enhances it for students who want specific training for a chosen occupation. Vocational education is an important part of a well-balanced school program and aims at developing competent economically, socially, emotionally, physically, and intellectually and in …

Derivation Of The Diffusion Equation And A Revision Of Matsuda's Theory For Polarography, W. Patrick Rahilly Jan 1965

Derivation Of The Diffusion Equation And A Revision Of Matsuda's Theory For Polarography, W. Patrick Rahilly

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Many theories have been proposed to yield a current-time relationship in Polarography. The most widely accepted is that of Matsuda. He assumes that the electrolyte can be separated into an inhomogeneous region about the mercury drop and a homogeneous region elsewhere. This assumption leads to a first order , nonlinear, ordinary differential equation directly solvable by substitution of a properly chosen series. But the series solution obtained is only a particular solution; for there exists, as one would expect, a family of solutions depending on a contrast of integration. In the literature, derivation of the diffusion equation has never been …

Elastic Stress Distribution In Rectangularly Notched Members By Finite Differences, Paul Andrew Hoffman Jan 1965

Elastic Stress Distribution In Rectangularly Notched Members By Finite Differences, Paul Andrew Hoffman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The design of notched members by structural engineers has become a practice that is now being employed more frequently than in the past. This is particularly true in the aircraft, missile, automobile and shipbuilding industries where available space is necessarily a minimum. The determination of the elastic stress distribution in notched structural members is important because the introduction of a notch generally has the effect of subjecting the member to a situation of high combined stresses. The primary objective of this investigation is to obtain elastic stress distribution in rectangular notched structural members, employing the finite difference method and electronic …

The Design And Construction Of A 6-Inch Mach-Zehnder Type Interferometer And Its Use For A Study In Free Convection, Clayton W. Knofczynski Jan 1965

The Design And Construction Of A 6-Inch Mach-Zehnder Type Interferometer And Its Use For A Study In Free Convection, Clayton W. Knofczynski

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Heat transfer by free convection is a commonly encountered phenomenon and yet is difficult to analyze and evaluate. It would prove interesting and informative to obtain a view of the disturbance in the field of flow, and also quantitative data to evaluate temperature variations and analyze the heat transferred. Therefore it was proposed to build a Mach-Zehnder interferometer, not only to give a “picture” of the phenomenon but also to supply sufficient information to determine temperature distribution in the flow field and aid in the determination of the free convection coefficient. Such a versatile instrument is the Mach-Zehnder interferometer which …

Design And Testing Of Experimental Components Used On Photoelastic Analysis, Alan Rae Peterson Jan 1965

Design And Testing Of Experimental Components Used On Photoelastic Analysis, Alan Rae Peterson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Exact solutions of the stress distribution in elastic bodies are confined to a selected group of geometric configuration. The nature of irregular-shape problems prohibits a solution by closed formula or even by a general form of solution. All experimental techniques have weaknesses which limit their usage. Strain gauges give a numerical solution but only at a surface. Stress coating are materials which will fail when a prescribed stress value is reached. Such brittle coatings will show the direction, magnitude, and distribution of tensile stresses over an entire surface but they are restricted to some designated level of failure. Two dimensional …

The Total Energy Capacity And The Instantaneous Energy Release In Springs, Suhayl M. Mamoun Jan 1965

The Total Energy Capacity And The Instantaneous Energy Release In Springs, Suhayl M. Mamoun

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The objective of this research project is to determine the total energy absorption capacity of the various types of mechanical springs in terms of mathematical equations, and use of these equations to find the instantaneous energy release. The importance of springs as machine elements stems from the fact that they can be used for absorbing mechanical energy. It must be clearly recognized that the development of the energy equations, as far as springs are concerned, is nothing but a means to an end: that the energy storing capacity of a spring should be considered as one of the primary aspects …

A New Partial Differential Equation And A New Instantaneous Current-Time Curve For Polarography, Russell B. Kidman Jan 1965

A New Partial Differential Equation And A New Instantaneous Current-Time Curve For Polarography, Russell B. Kidman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Present theories describing polarography processes are inadequate for, they do not correctly predict experimental results. However, this use of the average conceals how poorly the instantaneous time-dependence of the diffusion current is represented. Accordingly this paper attempts to illuminate the situation and do what it can to remedy the problem. Some authors have sought to make theory agree with experiment by improving the approximate solution of the accepted partial differential equation. Such attempts have met with little success in predicting the instantaneous current. The present paper points out a flaw inherent in the accepted p.d.e. A few workers have adopted …

The Effect Of Span Length On Ultimate Moment In Rectangular Plain And Reinforced Concrete Beams, Abolgasem Kazemi Jan 1964

The Effect Of Span Length On Ultimate Moment In Rectangular Plain And Reinforced Concrete Beams, Abolgasem Kazemi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of the overall project was to observe the effect of span length on ultimate moment of concrete beams due to flexure. The general field of structural analysis has made significant advance in recent years due to the combined influence of computer technology, the common use of higher mathematics, and the acceptance of the ultimate moment theory. Since ultimate design has been in great demand, extensive testing and research has been conducted concerning the properties of beams such as I beams, wood beams, plain concrete beams, and reinforced concrete beams. The present equations to predict the ultimate moment of …

A Study Of The Basic Strength Components Of Asphaltic Concrete, Jalal Sarsam Jan 1964

A Study Of The Basic Strength Components Of Asphaltic Concrete, Jalal Sarsam

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Generally speaking, pavements may be divided into two broad classifications, i.e. rigid and flexible. The term rigid pavement is applied only to wearing surfaces constructed of Portland Cement Concrete. The term flexible is used to denote the tendency of all layers to conform to the same shape under traffic. The basic concept in the design of flexible pavement is that a load applied to the surface is distributed over successively larger areas, as it is transmitted through each lower layer or course, until it has become so diminished in its intensity as to be less than the strength of the …

Food Habits Of Bigmouth And Smallmouth Buffalo In Lewis And Clark Lake And The Missouri River, Thomas S. Mccomish

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Food habits were determined for 386 bigmouth buffalo and 277 smallmouth buffalo collected in 1962 and 1963 from Lewis and Clark Lake and the Missouri River. Young-of-the-year bigmouth buffalo stomachs contained 100 percent zooplankton. Bigmouth buffalo (330 to 530 millimeters) stomachs contained 99 percent zooplankton in 1952 and 95 percent in 1963. Digestive tracts of young-of-the-year smallmouth buffalo contained 99 percent copepods and one percent sand. Smallmouth buffalo (250 to 400 millimeters) contained about 65 percent zooplankton, 30 percent phytoplankton, and the remaining five percent consisted of chironomid larvae, plant detritus, and sand.
