The lack of physical fitness of Americans is a problem of major concern to people throughout the United States. With the growing concern for the improvement of physical fitness, it is imperative that the physical educators know the best means of developing and maintaining physical fitness in our adults as well as the students. The American people are constantly looking for a quick and easy way of doing things and because of this physical educators must develop a concise and effective physical fitness program that will be brief and simple to administer. An average of the four surveyed 8-140 cow dairy herds and eight model dairy systems were analyzed in this study. The three objectives were to: (1) determine …

An Analysis Of Current Printing Programs At Southern Negro Universities And Colleges Granting The Bachelor Of Science Degree, By Ford Ratcliff

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Constant evaluation is necessary to determine whether or not an education curriculum is serving the purpose for which it was designed. Curriculum construction is the result of the efforts of one man or a staff of men, usually based upon his or their experience in the field. Because of this fact, the resulting curriculum may be inadequate for the total development of the student in the area of his education. Little, if any, study has been made of Negro universities and colleges with reference to general curricula for printing programs found in such institutions. It is the purpose of this …

The basic purpose of this research was to compare the effects …

Farming Opportunities, Career Choices, And Educational Aspirations Of Farm Boys In South Dakota, Kenneth J. Ostroot Feb 1963

Farming Opportunities, Career Choices, And Educational Aspirations Of Farm Boys In South Dakota, Kenneth J. Ostroot

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A drive through any part of South Dakota will reveal that many farmsteads are vacant. Empty farmsteads are evidence that farmers have quit farming. The agricultural census shows that the number of South Dakota farms is decreasing and the average size of farms is increasing. Farmers have found it profitable to increase the size of farm units, and they have been able to operate larger units by substituting capital for labor. AS a result, entry into farming is becoming more difficult as opportunities are fewer, capital required to enter has increased, and operations have become more specialized. Farm boys in …

A Study Of Teacher Effectiveness As Evidenced By Supervisor Ratings And Placement Of Teachers And Its Relationship To College Academic Success, Miles Curtis Olson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Various criteria have been used by individuals in the hiring of teachers as supposed indicators of future success in the classroom. Some research has been done in the field of predicting who the good teacher will be, but the employer still have little more than the subjective judgement of others, his own observation in an interview, and the college record of the applicant to guide him in selection. This study will deal primarily with one facet of the three means of selection, that is, the college academic record. This study will attempt to show the relationship, or lack of, between …

The Relationship Of Selected Characteristics Of Farm Operators To Attitudes Toward Retirement, Wayne L. Larson Jan 1963

The Relationship Of Selected Characteristics Of Farm Operators To Attitudes Toward Retirement, Wayne L. Larson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A recent development in the social and economic history of the United States is the evolvement of an institutionalized stage of retirement in the life cycle of the average worker. In the early part of the twentieth century, retirement was not considered a major problem in our society. However, the number and proportion of people surviving to “post-retirement” age has been increasing steadily in both the rural and urban population. This is due, primarily, to declining mortality. Declining fertility, prior to World War II, has also had some effect on the increase in the proportion of people over 65 years …

Dairy Product Demand Projections To 1975: Their Impact On South Dakota's Dairy Industry, Norman R. Kallemeyn Jan 1963

Dairy Product Demand Projections To 1975: Their Impact On South Dakota's Dairy Industry, Norman R. Kallemeyn

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The economic history of the United States is replete with examples of adjustment and readjustment by firms and industries. Such adjustments are usually made necessary by changes in the economic environment, and failure to adjust rather quickly and completely to such changes can mean economic disaster for entrepreneurs within an industry, and can result in insufficiencies in the total economic system. To offset the effects of change, it is often advantageous to attempt to foresee change in the economic environment, to estimate the future impact of change on relevant sectors of the production and marketing system, and to recommend adjustments …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The use of hydrotherapy as a relief against such common minor discomforts as muscle stiffness or muscle soreness has long been advocated by athletic trainers and physical therapists. It is known to have gotten its start as early as World War I in France where it was used as a therapeutic agent for war casualties suffering from gunshot wounds. In athletic training, a question which very often arises is whether or not the whirlpool method of therapy should be used on an individual within a few hours prior to participation in physical activities requiring muscular strength, endurance and quick muscular …

A Comparison Of Motor Abilities Of Normal And Mentally Retarded Children, Dwayne G. Head

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The problem of education for the mentally retarded is fast becoming a major problem in the field of education. According to the United States Department of Health, Education, and Welfare, 126,000, or 3 out of every 100 children born in United States each year, are mentally retarded. Proper education for the mentally retarded child presents a problem. Presently, the retarded child is completely segregated from the normal child in the academic subjects; however, the mentally retarded child is integrated with the normal student in physical education classes. The theory behind this practice is that retarded students would be able to …

Vitamin A And Carotene Requirements Of Fattening Beef Cattle, Thomas M. Hansen Jan 1963

Vitamin A And Carotene Requirements Of Fattening Beef Cattle, Thomas M. Hansen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

During the last 25 years, several experiments have been conducted to study the amount of vitamin A and carotene needed by cattle. More emphasis has been devoted to carotene since cattle rations contain varying amounts of this precursor of vitamin A. Increasing market demands for lightweight cattle have brought about changes in methods of feeding. Cattle are being fattened rapidly at young ages using rations which contain a large amount of concentrates. Such rations are often low in carotene and need vitamin A or carotene supplementation. Recently, several research workers have questioned the adequacy of present recommended vitamin A and …

A Comparison Of Some Limnological Changes Caused By The Brookings Sewage Treatment Plant On Six-Mile Creek And The Big Sioux River, Richard Ruelle

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Introduction: In the days of the early pioneers in South Dakota and other sparsely settled areas, there was no problem in finding a sufficient supply of water for drinking, cooking, and washing purposes. The problems of waste disposal were taken care of by the microorganisms in the soil, the microorganisms easily being able to keep pace with the few settlers. As cities and towns began to form, usually along a stream where there was an abundant supply of fresh water, sewage disposal became a growing problem. The easiest way to get rid of the sewage was to dump it into …
