Infiltration Lagoons As A Tertiary Treatment Device, Terry L. Druyvestein Jan 1970

Infiltration Lagoons As A Tertiary Treatment Device, Terry L. Druyvestein

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

As the United States continues to grow and expand industrially, increased mechanization and shorter work weeks will result in a populace which will expect to enjoy increasing amounts of leisure time. Part of this leisure time will be used to participate in outdoor recreation activities, the result being an increased demand on lakes and streams. Maintaining these waters in a suitable condition for recreation and other beneficial uses has become the concern of most Americans. The Water Quality Act of 1965 and the subsequent state water quality standards are ample proof of the concern given to the control of water …

Flannery O'Connor And The Development Of The Grotesque In American Literature, Joan Rae Griffin Jan 1970

Flannery O'Connor And The Development Of The Grotesque In American Literature, Joan Rae Griffin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

When man's view of himself as a being in his universe changes with the tide of events, literary conventions change as well. There is very little in contemporary life that would contradict the assumption that man's view of himself and of his world is no longer governed by the assurance of reason or the confidence of prediction. When certainty of man's place in the universe was commonly accepted, for instance in the eighteenth-century, this assurance was reflected in a literature which was essentially rational and ordered. In the last two centuries, drastic upheavals in the course of human events have …

Supplementation With Vitamins A And D Of Beef Cattle Finishing Rations Containing Various Levels Of Carotene From Corn Silage And Corn Grain, Harold Richard King Jan 1970

Supplementation With Vitamins A And D Of Beef Cattle Finishing Rations Containing Various Levels Of Carotene From Corn Silage And Corn Grain, Harold Richard King

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this experiment was to determine the need for vitamin A and vitamin D supplements with rations composed of various levels or corn silage and corn grain when fed to cattle. Early investigations with vitamin D demonstrated that the reduced intensity or sunlight during the winter months resulted in decreased cutaneous formation of vitamin D and that dark- skinned animals synthesized less vitamin D than light skinned animals under given conditions of light intensity. Thus this experiment was conducted with Angus and Angus x Hereford crossbred steers and, to the extent possible under seasonal conditions considered to be …

Relationships Of Homologous Erythropoietin, L-Ascorbic Acid, And Iron Dextran To The Hemogram Of Newborn And Doe Rabbits, Lloud Edward Lippert

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The neonatal-anemia syndrome, an anemia of newborn animals, in a commonly observed physiological phenomenon in swine, humans and rats. The severity of the anemia is subject to unpredictable individual variation, but may be modified by the nutrition of the dam. Alterations in swine neonatal hemogram values begin 3-5 days postpartum and include decreases in packed cell volume and hemoglobin concentration. Vigorous and healthy appearing newborn become weak and particularly subject to infective agents and stresses, which may terminate in death. A slow return to postpartum hemogram values is observed if the newborn animal survives. The economic considerations of newborn mortality …

The Effects Of Selected Training Intensities And Durations On Blood Cholesterol And Selected Anthropometric Measurements, Alan Ingmar Molde Jan 1970

The Effects Of Selected Training Intensities And Durations On Blood Cholesterol And Selected Anthropometric Measurements, Alan Ingmar Molde

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Physical inactivity, due to automation and our busy mode of living, has contributed to a health problem in modern society. When obesity, high-fat diets, cigarette smoking, and stress are added, the end-product is an alarming increase in incidence of diseases of the heart and lungs. Admittedly, such diseases are multifactorial in cause, but inactivity appears to assume an increasingly important role. Exercise in relation to preventative and rehabilitative medicine, however, is a new and rapid changing field of research. Consequently, the knowledge concerning physical conditioning and training programs is limited and inadequate. Therefore, educators in health and physical education are …

The Origin And Development Of Sunday Competition Between The Hartford Courant And The Hartford Times, James M. Neal Jr. Jan 1970

The Origin And Development Of Sunday Competition Between The Hartford Courant And The Hartford Times, James M. Neal Jr.

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Despite the fact that the Times was an afternoon paper and the Courant a morning paper, the two were more alike than they were different throughout the 1950s and 1960s. Each newspaper was increasingly influenced by persons not native to New England, but both retained executives with New England roots. They were closely balanced in manpower, they competed vigorously for the same kinds of news, and (after September, 1968) they presented similar Sunday packages. Carl Lindstrom's charge that newspapers were increasingly dominated by the business offices could hardly be applied fairly to either newspaper in Hartford by 1970. The publishers …

A Comparison Of Management Systems For The Ewe Flock, Roger Allen Lind Jan 1970

A Comparison Of Management Systems For The Ewe Flock, Roger Allen Lind

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Generally sheep production relates to a grassland type of agriculture. But in many areas increasing acreages are used for cultivated crops, and less land is available for pasture due to new or improved cultural practices, increased fertilization, new or improved plant species and, in some areas, irrigation. Since the availability of land for use as pasture will most likely decrease in the future due to the increasing population and food demands of the world, confinement rearing of sheep may become a necessity. Mechanization in the sheep industry has been slow, while the use of confinement or semi-confinement management systems, laborsaving …

The Identification Of Changing Sex Roles Within A Family Unit As Perceived By First Graders, Janelle Fridley Jones Jan 1970

The Identification Of Changing Sex Roles Within A Family Unit As Perceived By First Graders, Janelle Fridley Jones

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Family life education includes the total education for living in families. The main emphasis of all home economics or homemaking education is life as it is lived within the home and family. Some aspects of home economics are usually included in the curriculum at all age levels from early childhood through secondary education. Family life in America has changed over the years. Such factors as family mobility, a greater amount of leisure time, an increase in early marriages, and more mothers employed outside the home indicate the need for education in family living. Moreover, currently fewer youngsters learn about homemaking …

The Influence Of An Unusually High Water Table On Ground Water Quality At A Refuse Disposal Site, Charles Strock Johnson Jan 1970

The Influence Of An Unusually High Water Table On Ground Water Quality At A Refuse Disposal Site, Charles Strock Johnson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

At a 1961 symposium on ground water contamination and later in 1963 at a national conference on solid wastes, concern was shown for the protection of one of our most valuable resources - ground water. It was felt at both conferences that a definite need existed for more research in areas pertaining to the nature and mobility of chemical and biological contaminants leached from refuse disposal areas. Finally, in 1965, because of the interest shown in these problems, Congress passed the Solid Waste Disposal Act which created the Office of Solid Wastes within the Public Health Service. Included in on …

A Comparison Of A Low Protein Diet Plus Added Methionine With A Normal Diet For Three Strains Of Laying Hens In Various Environments, Roger Dale Muller Jan 1970

A Comparison Of A Low Protein Diet Plus Added Methionine With A Normal Diet For Three Strains Of Laying Hens In Various Environments, Roger Dale Muller

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The protein requirement of the laying hen encompasses a problem of great importance to the nutritionist. With the discovery of amino acids, which are commonly referred to as "the building blocks of protein," it was soon evident that the fowl had a requirement primarily for amino acids, not protein. It has been difficult to establish the exact amino acid requirements of each species and age group. To overcome this difficulty, feed formulae for laying hens as well as other groups of fowl have been designed to provide a surplus of protein and thus amino acids from a wide variety of …

Effects Of Off-Season Weight Training Programs On Development Of Strength And Explosive Power Of Football Players, Anthony Bartley Mitchell Jan 1970

Effects Of Off-Season Weight Training Programs On Development Of Strength And Explosive Power Of Football Players, Anthony Bartley Mitchell

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Training to improve athletic performance is as old as the history of man. The ancient Persians began training their boys at the age of six, toughening them psychologically as well as physically by arduous activity under difficult and uncomfortable conditions. The ancient Greeks were fond of the training technique of running in sand with weights around the wrists and ankles. Some of these training techniques were remarkably scientific while others were based on tradition, ritual, or myth. From this colorful past have evolved our present day training programs which are based upon research results and tradition. With our present day …

The Water Quality Act of 1965 was passed with the intention of enhancing the quality and value of water resources and establishing a national policy for the prevention, control, and abatement of water pollution. The Federal Water Pollution Control Administration has issued guidelines to be followed by the States in developing standards for interstate waters. As an interstate stream, the Big Sioux River must conform to the Federal requirements. Pollution in South Dakota is derived principally from agricultural, municipal and industrial wastes. Dairy, meat processing and mining industries are the most important sources of industrial wastes. Bacterial pollution is the …

The Effects Of Selected Training Intensities And Durations On Improvement And Maintenance Of Cardiorespiratory Fitness, Joel Austin Swisher

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The benefits of being physically fit are generally accepted, but in the fast-moving society of today people find it difficult to allot regular periods of time for exercise. When they do have some spare time, they generally desire to spend it in an enjoyable manner. With these factors in mind, it is imperative that a physical conditioning program be designed wherein the subjects can develop and maintain good cardiorespiratory fitness with a minimum of physical activity. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of selected training intensities and durations in order to determine a minimal training program …
