Estimation Of An Economic Social Return To The Investment In The Undergraduate Education Of One Graduating Class Of A University, Ronald N. Lafferty

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Colleges and universities compete for financial resources with societal needs such as defense, transportation, health, welfare, and recreation. Any expenditure for education has an alternative use in some other activity. Both education and the alternative activity would produce financial and non-financial benefits. Comparison of the non-financial benefits must almost always be subjective. The purpose of this study is to make possible an objective comparison of the financial benefits. Empirical estimates of the financial benefits are available expenditures in most activities; however, no estimates of the financial benefits are available for specific investments in education. The decision maker is forced to …

Occupational Aspirations And Expectations Of Seminary Students, William Mastin Cross Jan 1971

Occupational Aspirations And Expectations Of Seminary Students, William Mastin Cross

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study was developed as the result of a long-term interest in occupational choice. The basic problem of the study was the nature of the relations between influences perceived by seminarians on their occupational choice, and their occupational specialization. The basic objective was to explore the nature and extent of this relation. Literature was reviewed dealing with the relation of reference groups to classical and contemporary theory. Literature related to reference theory dealing with medical students and ministerial specialization was also dealt with. The basic theoretical model used was that of Merton. He related reference group theory to the occupational …

Flavor Preference And Stability Of A Low-Fat Dairy Spread, James Robert Miller Jan 1970

Flavor Preference And Stability Of A Low-Fat Dairy Spread, James Robert Miller

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Low-fat dairy spread has been defined as a product which contains only dairy ingredients and has a lower fat content than the commonly used spreads, butter and margarine (5). Although some low-fat spreads have contained very little fat, most of those which have been developed during the past 30 years have contained about one-third to two-thirds as much fat as the commonly used spreads and have had a higher protein content. ·The low-fat dairy spread studied in this project contained about ten times more protein and only one-half as much fat as butter and margarine. The present day justification of …

Abnormal Milk Evaluations In Eastern South Dakota Milk Plants And Dairy Herds, Edwin J. Kleen Jan 1970

Abnormal Milk Evaluations In Eastern South Dakota Milk Plants And Dairy Herds, Edwin J. Kleen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

For many years bovine mastitis has been a major problem for dairy producers, the seriousness of which can be measured by the volumes of literature which have been written about it as well as the economic losses incurred by the dairy industry because of it. The fact that mastitis is still a virulent disease in spite of the vast amount of research conducted on it would suggest either that the underlying causes of mastitis still are not completely understood or that the knowledge gained through research has not been presented effectively to those who need it most—namely the dairy farmer. …

Characteristics Of Low-Income Families In The Head Start Program In Three Eastern South Dakota Counties, Christopher Lee Smith Jan 1970

Characteristics Of Low-Income Families In The Head Start Program In Three Eastern South Dakota Counties, Christopher Lee Smith

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Little has been published which deals specifically with families in the Head Start program. Therefore, it would seem most appropriate to ask: What characteristics do Head Start families possess; in what way, if any, do these characteristics differ from those characteristics which are frequently attributed to the "poverty type" family; and, what are the Head Start parents impressions of the Head Start program. Objective 1. To determine the extent to which a sample of Head Start families possesses certain social and demographic characteristics which have been cited as common among families participating in the Head Start program, or among poverty …

Physical Conditioning And Ammonium Carbonate Affecting Blood Ammonium And Swimming Performance Of Dogs, Larry Alan Bjurstrom Jan 1970

Physical Conditioning And Ammonium Carbonate Affecting Blood Ammonium And Swimming Performance Of Dogs, Larry Alan Bjurstrom

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Ammonia is produced by the working muscle of exercising mammals and cellular metabolic process of resting mammals. Normally relatively minute blood ammonium-nitrogen (BAN) levels are present because mammals have efficient systems for excreting ammonia or converting it to non-toxic end products. Impaired or inadequate detoxification process allow elevated BAN levels with excessive ammonia production. Above normal BAN levels produce deleterious effects which are well known to many research fields. When impaired or inadequate detoxification process occur in an exercising mammal, deterioration of performance is manifested in physical exhaustion and fatigue. Mobilization and enhancement of the KrebsHenseleit urea cycle by addition …

The Primary Structure Of Selected Peptides From Chymotryptic Digests Of Nifungin, Burton D. Cardwell

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Nifungin, an antifungal peptide produced by Aspergillus giganteus, was studied and partially characterized. The amino acid composition of the antifungal peptide was investigated , and eighty-seven percent of the peptide constituents were identified. The presence of free –SH groups in the peptide was studies by spectrophototmetric titration of the peptide with p-hydroroxymercuribenzoate. Performic acid oxidation was used to disrupt the disulfide bridges present in the molecule, and subsequent enzymatic digestion of the oxidized peptide was accomplished with alpha chymotrypsin. Chromatographic separation of the digestion mixture produced eleven chymotryptic peptides. Six of these peptides were selected for amino acid sequence analysis …

Effect Of Days Open On Lactation Production, Roger L. Ripley Jan 1970

Effect Of Days Open On Lactation Production, Roger L. Ripley

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Accurate evaluation of dairy production records is essential if dairymen are to establish and maintain profitable dairy herds and efficient culling programs. Improper record evaluation may result in. saving breeding stock that otherwise might be eliminated. Many factors may influence the validity of individual production records. Adjustment factors, currently in use by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) for sire and cow evaluations, are generally accepted as removing the majority of these influences. Consequently, these factors are invaluable to practical dairymen. The adjustment factors, suggested by McDaniel, et al. (24) in 1967, take into account the geographical location, season …

Gout is one of the earliest disease entities to be described in medical writings. Hippocrates noted familial distribution patterns and described its classic symptomatology in the 5th century B.C. Empirical treatment employing colchicine was advocated by Alexander of Tralles in the 5th century A.D. A better understanding of the complex association between clinical manifestations of gout and uric acid, carbohydrate and lipid metabolism has made rational treatment possible only very recently. Ample experimental and clinical data now available show a definite association between disorders of purine metabolism resulting in hyperuricemia and frequent concomitant hyperlipidemia. A high incidence of both …
