Suitability Of Selected Organisms For Monitoring Leachate At A Refuse Disposal Site, John Nathan True Jan 1983

Suitability Of Selected Organisms For Monitoring Leachate At A Refuse Disposal Site, John Nathan True

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

If a landfill is improperly managed or improperly located, contamination of the ground water is possible. Once contaminated, the polluted ground water can travel for great distances with little dispersal or interaction with the soil. Once the ground water is polluted it is very costly, if even possible, to alleviate the problem. Over fifty percent of the people in the United States use ground water as a source for drinking water. With landfills located throughout the U.S. and with over one half of the population drinking ground water, it is not hard to visualize the pollution potential from an improperly …

Demographic Correlations With Exercise Of Self-Care Agency In Women, Susan Marie Hubka Todd Jan 1983

Demographic Correlations With Exercise Of Self-Care Agency In Women, Susan Marie Hubka Todd

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The particular health needs of women have not been addressed by health care professionals. There are three reasons for this: first, only the reproductive functions of women are thought to be particularly female health problems, thus producing a severely limited scope of study on women; secondly, all other health problems are measured in terms of normal adult functioning, those norms having been set by research on adult male normalcy or pathology; and lastly, what studies have been individualized to women have been done on women only in illness situations. Dunbar et al illustrated in their comprehensive, nursing literature search the …

Selected Factors Associated With Age-Specific Net Migration For South Dakota, 1970-1980, Sidney G. Goss

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A study of South Dakota net migration was conducted to (1) determine the extent of age-specific migration from 1970-80; (2) compare current age-specific migration patterns with the previous decade; and (3) determine selected socio-demographic factors associated with the 1970-80 migration for the 20-29 age group. The unit of analysis was county. Multiple regression was used, and Lee’s model provided the theoretical framework. Analysis of Objective One revealed that: from 1970 to 1980, (1) South Dakota experienced total ne out-migration of 26,384 persons; (2) twelve five-year age categories experienced net out-migration; (3) the 20-29 age group accounted for 73 percent of …

Health Knowledge Assessment Of College Freshmen Educated In South Dakota K-12, Nadeen E. Lunde Jan 1983

Health Knowledge Assessment Of College Freshmen Educated In South Dakota K-12, Nadeen E. Lunde

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Nothing in life is so taken for granted when possessed, or so missed when lost, as is health. Therefore, it is essential to possess basic facts if each individual is to take advantage of medical science advances, protect himself against quackery, and obtain an optimum level of health. Health education is recognized by leading educators as of vital importance in educating our youth, but health education has not established itself in a way comparable to other subjects. Kilander noted this fact as early as 1937, and yet, 46 years later, South Dakota's health education programs have not been established. Many …

Ozonation Of A Municipal Groundwater Supply To Reduce Iron And Manganese, Steven Lance Schjodt Jan 1983

Ozonation Of A Municipal Groundwater Supply To Reduce Iron And Manganese, Steven Lance Schjodt

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Groundwaters often contain considerable amounts of carbon dioxide and under anaerobic conditions, the ferric and manganic compounds are reduced by the slightly acidic water to their soluble ferrous and manganous states, and solution occurs without difficulty. The development of anaerobic conditions is essential for appreciable amounts of iron and manganese to gain entrance to a water supply. For this reason, groundwaters usually contain much higher concentrations of iron and manganese than do surface waters. An oxidation process is the best method for removing soluble iron and manganese. During an oxidation process, the soluble ferrous (Fe+2) and manganous (Mn+2) compounds will …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Two rumen fistulated Holstein cows, weighing approximately 550 kg, were used in a switchback design experiment to evaluate the effects of consuming large amounts (38% of total ration dry matter) of dried whey on rumen microbial protein synthesis. Cows were fed total mixed rations consisting of (dry matter basis) 45% corn silage, 10% alfalfa hay, and 45% concentrate mix. The concentrate mix was primarily corn and soybean meal (control) or 85% dried whole whey. Dry matter intakes averaged 16.4 and 15.3 kg/day for control and whey diets. Concentrations of bacteria and protozoa in rumen contents were estimated using diaminopimelic acid …

Neutron Activation Analysis For Trace Metal Content Of Brookings Sludge For Land Application, Daniel George Dewall Jan 1983

Neutron Activation Analysis For Trace Metal Content Of Brookings Sludge For Land Application, Daniel George Dewall

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The Federal Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) strongly favors land application of sludge as a disposal method and requires communities to consider the application of sewage wastes to land as one of their alternatives to advanced wastewater treatment in order to be eligible for federal funding to improve sewage wastewater treatment facilities. Although use of sewage sludge on the land has definite benefits, several potential problems may develop when applying this method of disposal. One main concern has been the possibility of toxic metal pollution occurring in the application soils. If high concentrations of zinc, copper, lead, cadmium, etc. are present …
