Chandigarh: A Geographical Analysis, Sujata Sangwan Apr 1985

Chandigarh: A Geographical Analysis, Sujata Sangwan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Chandigarh is the only completely planned city in India. Brasilia (the new capital of Brazil) and Chandigarh are, in fact, the only major completely planned cities of the mid-20th Century. Brasilia has slums in the satellite villages, whereas Chandigarh does not have many apparent slums within the city as most of them have been cleared by resettlement made possible by a low-cost housing program. Chandigarh is an expensive city in which to live and build, but it is well planned. The city provides an excellent training ground for study by architects and planners throughout the world. The primary purpose of …

Radium-226 And -228 In The Groundwater Of Southeastern South Dakota, Terry Lee Randall Apr 1985

Radium-226 And -228 In The Groundwater Of Southeastern South Dakota, Terry Lee Randall

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The intention of 'this thesis is to provide an overview of the research on the detection of naturally occurring radioactivity in the groundwater of southeastern South Dakota. The two constituents of the search were Ra-226 and Ra-228. These isotopes result from the natural decay of uranium and thorium present in underlying bedrock contained within the aquifers. The chief concern is that radium, being chemically similar to calcium, will replace the calcium present in bone tissue. These radium deposits are hazardous to one's health in that cells receiving. acute exposure may be damaged beyond the body's ability to repair them. The …

Ozonation And Manganese Greensand Filtration For Iron And Manganese Removal From A Municipal Groundwater Supply, Cary Pieterick

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Stoebner and Schjodt both used a pilot plant which treated raw water with ozone gas for the oxidation of iron am manganese and then passed the treated water through an anthracite coal filter. Both agree that the degree of iron and manganese oxidation was greatly affected by changes in ozone dosage but was not greatly affected by changes in detention time. Both also experienced limited filter runs between backwashing because of iron and manganese breakthrough in the filter effluent. Kirscherman used a pilot plant that involved aeration, potassium permanganate (KMnO4) treatment, basin detention, and filtration through a dual media (manganese …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A scientific attempt to correlate weather and lunar variables with behavior disturbances in humans began to surface in the 1960's, but the results have been inconsistent. Most of the studies have used only one weather variable, i.e., lunar phase, or temperature, or have used indirect methods of measuring disturbed behavior, such as telephone where study is needed to determine if there is a correlation between climatic variables and actual observed incidences of acting-out behavior. The problem under investigation is this study was: What is the relationship between the climatic conditions of temperature, humidity, barometric pressure, and lunar phase, and the …

Plasma Pepsinogen Test For Hypobiotic Nematode Larvae In Abomasal Glands Of Sheep, Richard Alex Jensen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The American Association of Veterinary Parasitologists reported that nematodes in sheep represent an unquestionably great production loss, and that the absence of deworming on a routine basis would hamper modern sheep production. After ingestion, the infective third stage larva, or L3, exsheaths and burrows into the digestive glands, and becomes a fourth stage larva, or L4. According to Armour, 18 to 21 days after L3 ingestion occurs, the nematode reaches sexual maturity. However, while in the gastric glands, these L4 invade the parietal, or hydrochloric acid (HCl) secreting cells, damaging them, and replacing them with non-acid secreting cells. This leads …

The Effect Of Various Proteins And Amino Acids On Salenium Toxicity To Rats Fed Corn-Based Or Wheat-Based Diets, Ailene Annette Herr Mar 1985

The Effect Of Various Proteins And Amino Acids On Salenium Toxicity To Rats Fed Corn-Based Or Wheat-Based Diets, Ailene Annette Herr

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Selenium occurs in the earth's crust in varying concentrations. It is crystallochemically related to sulfur, and sulfide ores frequently contain selenium. The commercial production of selenium is usually as a by-product of other mining operations, especially copper mining. It occurs in different oxidation states depending on the pH of the soils. At acidic pHs the predominate form is selenite. That present as selenite is bound to a high degree by iron colloids in soils and is thus not readily absorbed by plants. Once taken up by plants selenium becomes, to varying degrees, available to animals. Selenium can be either harmful …

Common Work Space Of Two Robot Arms, Byung Oh Choi Feb 1985

Common Work Space Of Two Robot Arms, Byung Oh Choi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The choice of kinematic and dynamic parameters for a robot arm depends on the desired working space, desired load lifting capacity, and desired performance of the robot. The inverse process, which is the determination of a single robot's work space from given specifications, is also possible, and is very important both to the designers and to the users. Proceeding further, the analysis of the common work space of two robot arms expands our understanding of spatial limitations of the communicating, cooperative robots of the future. This thesis presents a new possible application of industrial robots in which two robots work …

The Effect Of Nutrition Education On The Dietary Intake Of College Students, Elizabeth Ann Pond

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

According to Guthrie, nutrition professionals are especially concerned about the food habits of adolescents. Dietary inadequacies are higher during adolescence than at any other stage of the life cycle. Deficiencies in this age range can have fat reaching effects, especially for females. Female adolescent nutritive needs are surpassed only by those during pregnancy and lactation. The adolescent who becomes pregnant before growth is complete is of particular concern. If nutritive intake is inadequate before conception the adolescent and her unborn child are at high risk. Another nutritionally related concern in adolescence is the increased incidence of eating disorders such as …

Lungworm Infections, Reproduction And Summer Habitat Use Of Bighorn Sheep In Custer State Park, South Dakota, Gary C. Brundige

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis) were once indigenous to the Black Hills and Badlands of South Dakota. When European settlers moved into this region during the late 1800' s, market hunting, loss of habitat, and introduction of animal diseases and parasites caused the subspecies of the region, the Audubon's bighorn sheep (O. c. auduboni), to become extinct by 1916 (Buechner 1960). To reestablish bighorn sheep in the Black Hills, 8 Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep (O. c. canadensis) were introduced into the former range of the Audubon's sheep in 1922. Finding the habitat to be very suitable, this small population increased to …

Seasonal Effect Of Large-Scale Gravel Excavation On Ground Water Quality, James R. Rasmussen Jan 1985

Seasonal Effect Of Large-Scale Gravel Excavation On Ground Water Quality, James R. Rasmussen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

One of the highest priority uses of water is, of course, its ingestion to sustain life. It is expected that through conventional water treatment an abundance of drinking water will be produced free from pathogenic organisms, free from scale-forming substances, free from toxic chemicals, free from corrosion and corrosion products and free from aesthetically offensive substances. If these freedoms of water quality can be met at a fraction of the expense of conventional water treatment by using the natural environment, serious attention should be focused accordingly. In eastern South Dakota, particularly the Brookings area of the Big Sioux River Basin, …

Identification Of Volatile Compounds Produced By Brevibacterium Linens That Inhibit Molds, Samuel E. Beattie

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Mold contamination of processed food and its raw ingredients is a major concern in agriculture. Although at one time mold contamination of cheese and other foods was considered to be of little conse9uence, discovery of carcinogenic and/or teratogenic toxins (73) produced by molds commonly associated with food has changed this innocuous and frequent inconvenience into a serious health consideration. The presence of mold on or in cheese is a common occurrence, indeed, many cheeses depend upon molds to provide characteristic cheese flavor and texture. Cheeses such as blue, Roquefort, Camembert, and Brie are ripened under controlled conditions by species of …
