The Narrow Room : A Critical Study Of The Sonnet Sequences Of Edna St. Vincent Millay, Ann O. Boultinghouse
The Narrow Room : A Critical Study Of The Sonnet Sequences Of Edna St. Vincent Millay, Ann O. Boultinghouse
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The second decade of the twentieth century brought to American Literature a renaissance in poetry which affected not only the course of American letters bt also the course of American culture as well. The beginning of this renaissance is marked by the publication of the Lyric Year in 1912 which purported to be a collection of new, fresh, and arresting poems by contemporary poets, both known and obscure. In this volume and into this renaissance appeared the teen-aged Edna St. Vincent Millay with her youthful "Renascence." Although the poem did not win a prize, over which there was an eruption …

Fracture Initiation In Viscoelastic Solids, James A. Elsing
Fracture Initiation In Viscoelastic Solids, James A. Elsing
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The subject of this paper is to derive generalized analytical expressions to predict fracture in viscoelastic polymer materials. To aid in understanding behavioral characteristics of viscoelastic materials, a basic background of viscoelastic models and their responses are presented and briefly discussed. Fracture from two types of cracks are considered; the first 1s a penny-shaped crack in a three-dimensional solid and the second is a crack the thickness of the material in a two-dimensional solid. Except for the constants, the same equations describe fracture in both 2-D and 3-D solids. The fracture equations were developed using expressions from Sneddon, Wnuk, Griffith …
The Tension Between Mysticism And Erotic Sensibility In Christina Rossetti's "Goblin Market", Linda H. Marquardt
The Tension Between Mysticism And Erotic Sensibility In Christina Rossetti's "Goblin Market", Linda H. Marquardt
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
"Goblin Market," Christina Rossetti's best-known narrative poem, appeared in 1862 as the leading poem in Goblin Market and Other Poems, a volume designed to attract the Christmas trade. Since then, the few scholars who have ventured to regard Miss Rossetti as something more than Dante Gabriel's sister have concerned themselves with varied and in-depth critical interpretations of "Goblin Market." William Rossetti, brother and biographer of the poet, reports that he had often heard Christina say that she meant nothing profound by the fairy tale and that "Goblin Market" should not be taken as an apologue. Disregarding Christina Rossetti's own comment, …
A Study Of The Thematic Importance Of Nine Female Characters Of The English Mystery Plays, Linda Lee Boyd
A Study Of The Thematic Importance Of Nine Female Characters Of The English Mystery Plays, Linda Lee Boyd
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
As indicated by the title and by the large proportion of pages devoted to the subject, transformation of variables is the primary topic of this thesis. The transformation of partially overlapping, correlated, two-dimensional, Gaussian distributed random variates to partially overlapping, independent, one-dimensional, Cauchy distributed random variates involves a reduction in dimensionality by one. Consequently, the equation defining the receiver is simplified, and the expressions for predicting the classification error are easier to formulate. The equation required to effect this transformation is z=Y1/Y2 , where Y1 , Y 2 are the standardized correlated Gaussian variates and z …

A Feasibility Model For Farm Supply Firm Mergers, Donald R. Schwartz
A Feasibility Model For Farm Supply Firm Mergers, Donald R. Schwartz
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
South Dakota is currently witnessing a revolutionary change in its elevator-farm supply industry. Technology applied in all phases of the industry -- production, processing, and distribution -- has had an impact upon the structure of the industry. Some of the changes taking place within the industry have been fostered by changes in other sectors of the economy. Employment opportunities and increasing wage rates have provided many marginal firm operators more favorable alternatives outside the elevator-farm supply business. Simultaneously, economic growth has encouraged new investments in larger grain handling and farm supply firms, thus hastening the adoption of technological developments. These …

A History Of The Speech Association Of South Dakota, Illona M. Clark
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
For a number of years, the Speech Association of South Dakota has served as the vehicle for gathering together professionals in the field for the purpose of promoting and improving speech in South Dakota. The Speech Association of South Dakota was earlier named the South Dakota Speech Teachers’ Association. By reorganization in the spring of 1961, it came to represent, as defined in the constitution, “a confederation of the existing speech associations in the state.” The organizational members of this Association included South Dakota High School Speech Association, the South Dakota Intercollegiate Forensic Association, the South Dakota Speech and Hearing …
