The state of South Dakota has been divided into many different regions. Some of these regions are the result of formal classification by professionals "such as geographers, geologists and pedologists, whereas others reflect the informal opinion of a layman or nonprofessional. Some distinctions exist, perhaps, for convenience, whereas others express a sense of pride and belonging in community or territory. Regardless of the motivation, the resulting perceptual regions are abstractions of space that illustrate how the residents of South Dakota interpret their environment. This paper is a cultural study. Downy brome (Bromus tectorum L.) is a severe weed problem in winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) throughout North America. Downy brome competes for space, light, nutrients in the soil, and most importantly moisture. Rydrych reported that a grower with reasonable control of downy brome can increase yield of winter wheat 6-12 bushels per acre. The lack of selective herbicides which control downy brome in winter wheat and conservation tillage practices have contributed to the spread of downy brome. Some herbicides labeled for downy brome control in winter wheat require incorporation. Incorporation of herbicides may not be compatible with reduced or …

Quantitation Of Teratogenic Effects Of 5-Fluorouracil Administered To Mice In Vivo Or In Submerged Limb Culture, Theresa A. Sanders

This study demonstrates the use of submerged limb culture in teratologic testing. Pregnant mice were treated on day 11 of gestation (E11, plug date = E0) with 10, 20 or 40 mg of 5-fluorouracil (FU) per kg body weight. On E17, treated and untreated fetuses were examined for gross malformations and were fixed in 95% ethanol. Reduction of limb size and digital defects, including ectrodactyly (ED), syndactyly (SD), microdactyly and polydactyly were dose-dependent. In parallel studies, pregnant mice were treated on the morning of E11 and embryos were removed either 7h (E11) or 24h (E12) later for submerged limb culture. …

Rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri) cage culture techniques were investigated in dugouts as part of a continuing program to evaluate the potential of small-scale, landowner-based aquaculture operations. Trout raised in the study did not reach a marketable size (200 g) due to the short growing season and small size at stocking. No significant (P >0.05) differences in growth were detected between stocking densities of 60, 80, 100, and 120 fish/m³. Demand feeding resulted in significantly greater length (P≤0.01), weight (P≤0.01), and relative weight (P≤0.05) than hand feeding in both years tested. The purpose of this study was to examine the response across two selected cultures toward particular concepts in Christian messages. This research attempted to investigate if there was any difference between Japanese and American students studying at universities in the United States in the response to some words carrying Christian concepts. This study used the semantic differential technique to measure the intensity of response that individuals have toward the concepts. Methods for cage rearing rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri) were investigated to assist in the development of a landowner aquaculture program for eastern South Dakota. Rainbow trout when stocked as small fingerlings in the spring did not reach a marketable weight (200 g). The fish did attain a size acceptable to some landowners for personal consumption. Maximum stocking density (fish/m3) was not determined. Densities greater than those used would have been needed to determine the optimum stocking rate. The use of a deeper culture cage (3 m) was justified in this area due to the high water temperatures that were common. …

This study investigated age- and sex-specific death rates in South Dakota Counties among the population 65 and over in 1960, 1970 and 1980. Census Bureau and Vital Statistic data were employed to answer the basic question of how death rates and quality of life factors were related. Quality of life factors included; economics, urbanization, health technology, and education, which were operationalized at the county level. A description of county quality of life factors and age- and sex-specific death rates for males and females was presented. Using Richard Emerson's exchange network analysis, exchange relations in the South Dakota 4-H program were examined. South Dakota 4-H is comprised of both paid staff and volunteer leaders. It is currently undergoing structural change through the implementation of the Key Leader System. The Key Leader System involves appointing county level Key Leaders and club level Project Leaders to disseminate information to 4-H members and to assist them with their projects. Survey data, interviews, and State Fair results were collected to test hypotheses generated by exchange network analysis. Both clubs and counties varied in the degree to which they had implemented …

Rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri) reared in 1 m³ cages in a South Dakota dugout pond grew and survived as well or better than most cage-cultured rainbow trout reported in the literature. Significant differences (P≤0.01) in mean length, weight, and food conversion, and similarity in relative weight between trout fed 2 and 4% of body weight daily, indicated that the optimum feeding rate was near 3% for this size range (35=100g). Daily rations based on fish size and water temperature need to be developed for trout reared in a lentic environment. The high cost of fingerlings was the limiting factor in …

Nitrogen is an essential ingredient of all proteins, and, as such, is required by all forms of life. An inadequate supply of nitrogen for agriculture is therefore a contributing factor to global food shortages. In order to meet world food demands, research to increase useable nitrogen supplies for agriculture is becoming an urgent priority. This project, which combines the techniques of serology and nitrogen fixation research, provides an important contribution to this goal. Chromosome and genetic instabilities were reported in many plant species (c.f. Partanen, 1963; Sunderland, 1973; Skirvin, 1978; D'Amato, 1976; 1978). D'Amato (1976) suggested that, in higher plants, only meristematic cells were genetically stable; explants excised from stem apices would then ensure genetic uniformity for in vitro plant propagation. However, cultures derived from shoot apices were generally inefficient for vegetative propagation. The usefulness of a tissue culture technique for cloning would then be judged not only by the degree of genetic variation in the tissue culture-derived population, but also by the amount of plantlets initiated from a culture. Studies were conducted at Gavins Point National Fish Hatchery, South Dakota, in 1976 and 1977, to evaluate the effects of diet and water temperature on growth and survival of paddlefish, Polyodon spathula, young, and the effects that fungicides have on hatching success and fry survival. The W-7 cool water diet was fed hourly and three times daily while the Liv commercial diet was fed hourly to paddlefish young for 40 days after swim-up. Average survival rate and total length of paddlefish fed W-7 hourly were 16.0% and 30 mm, those fed W-7 three times daily were 10.0% and 23 mm, …

Biological nitrogen fixation, a means of alleviating our increasing dependence on synthesized nitrogen fertilizers, is being studied with renewed interest. Production of nitrogen fertilizer requires large amounts of natural gas and other non-renewable energy sources, while the energy for biological nitrogen fixation is derived either directly or indirectly from photosynthesis. With only limited supplies of natural gas and an increasing population, and thus increasing demand for food, the advantages and even necessity of understanding and enhancing biological nitrogen is obvious. The purpose of the study was to determine the attitude changes in females resulting from the four year Child Development and Family Relations (CDFR) program at South Dakota State University. If this program of study has an effect upon students’ attitudes, then there should be measurable differences between the attitudes of students beginning the CDFR program and the attitudes of those finishing the CDFR program. In order to demonstrate that a change in attitudes was due to this particular program, it was necessary that beginning and graduating students in other programs of study be tested and used as comparative groups.

The Easter lily, L. longiflorum Thunb. Is known not only for its ornamental value, but also for its large chromosomes, making it ideal cytological material. Big bluestem, Andropogon gerardii Vitman, is a South Dakota native grass. It possesses many desirable characteristics and unique adaptations to this region. This research has primarily dealt with the development of methods for cloning the species L. longiflorum and A. gerardii by tissue culture of leaf and/or floral parts. The pattern of plantlet differentiation from the cultures was also histologically studied.

Despite the extensive data that have accumulated on the detrimental effect of molds on the growth of farm animals, very little is known as to the beneficial role of fungi in animal feed. Recent studies at South Dakota State University research laboratories revealed, however, that only 164 of 392 strains of Aspergilli were found to be toxic. When the cultures were grown on sterile soybeans or wheat, some of the tested cultures exerted positive effects on growth of chicks and mice. Hence, the investigations reported herein were initiated to obtain further information on those cultures beneficial to chick performance and …

In an attempt to elucidate the role of nematodes in a grassland ecosystem nematode taxa, number and biomass data was gathered over a three year period at the Cottonwood International Biological Program Grassland Biome site in western South Dakota. The effects of grazing intensity, sampling date and sampling depth were studied. Nematicide treatment of range grasses in field and greenhouse studies was also used to evaluate the role of nematodes. Biomass data was used to estimate the intake of plant feeding nematodes. The flowering pattern of flax (Linum usitatissimum, L.) is cyclic in nature with periods of blossoming separated by periods of rest. To study the regulation of flowering cycles, four experiments were conducted. The first two dealt with nutritional aspects of cyclic flowering by imposing environmental stresses which conceivably might regulate flowering pattern nutritionally. The third and fourth experiments dealt with regulation from hormonal systems and included in vitro regulation of bud growth by growth regulators as well as characterization of endogenous hormonal systems by fluorimetry and bioassays.
