On The Electric Field Of Moving Magnets, Ronald Harvey Wilson Feb 1958

On The Electric Field Of Moving Magnets, Ronald Harvey Wilson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The following study arose from the discussion of a problem in a course in theoretical physics at South Dakota State College during the Winter quarter 1956-1957. The problem is stated as follows: “A symmetrically magnetized cylindrical magnet is rotating with constant angular velocity about its axis of symmetry. A straight wire at right angles to and in the plane of the axis of the magnet is arranged so that it can be rotated about the same axis. Is there an e.m.f. along the wire (a) when it is at rest, (b) when it is rotating with the magnet? Explain why.” …

Report Of Progress Toward The Experimental Development Of An Elementary Evaluative Listening Test, Dorothy Ardythe West Feb 1958

Report Of Progress Toward The Experimental Development Of An Elementary Evaluative Listening Test, Dorothy Ardythe West

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Our system of education must teach its students to recognize persuasion for what it is worth, to distinguish shades of meaning, to identify the hypocrisy of the demagogue and the flattery of the bootlicker. Because communication is so important in a representative government, some consideration should be given to the four overt communication skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Until very recent years, practically no emphasis has been placed up on the skill of listening in the school room. The writer hypothesizes that a test of evaluative listening skills could be used as a helpful training device to each students …

A Survey Of The Aspects Of Teaching Rural Electrification In Vocational Agriculture In South Dakota, George L. Wells Feb 1958

A Survey Of The Aspects Of Teaching Rural Electrification In Vocational Agriculture In South Dakota, George L. Wells

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study was made in an effort to determine pertinent information regarding the teaching of electricity in vocational agriculture. Is there a lack of information? Where do instructors obtain their information dealing with electricity? Are the component instructional phases of rural electrification taught? What methods are used in teaching them? Are there weaknesses in the teaching? These questions prompted the writer to conduct a study of the actual problems and practices in regard to teaching electricity. The writer has been teaching vocational agriculture in South Dakota six years and believes his findings will aid him and other sin their work …

Yield And Maturity Of Populations Of Drilled Corn Hybrids On The Northern Great Plains, Darrold E. Termunde Feb 1958

Yield And Maturity Of Populations Of Drilled Corn Hybrids On The Northern Great Plains, Darrold E. Termunde

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The majority of corn population studies have been conducted in the eastern or central area of the corn belt, where moisture is not usually a limiting factor. It would be unusual if those studies would apply to corn growing in the western regions of the corn belt, where moisture is often inadequate. Therefore a study dealing with rates of planting in the western regions of the corn belt is of major interest. Every spring the corn growers of this area are confronted with a great deal of literature indicating the need for high plant populations to realize maximum yield. A …

The Relationships Of Selected Factors To The Personal Adjustment Of A South Dakota Rural-Nonfarm Community's Older Population, Denton E. Morrison Feb 1958

The Relationships Of Selected Factors To The Personal Adjustment Of A South Dakota Rural-Nonfarm Community's Older Population, Denton E. Morrison

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Declining health, loss of physical vigor and the increased probability of death are conditions to which the aged of all societies must adjust. In addition, many older citizens in American society must face unique problems including the termination of gainful employment; reduced income; isolation through death or removal of family, friends, peers; increased periods of indolence; and a decreasing standard of living. Moreover, later life with its attendant complex of problems now faces more people in this country than ever before. The problems of older citizens in American society have therefore become the focus of considerable public attention in recent …

Physical Fitness And Physical Education Programs In Selected Schools Of South Dakota, Joe Lockwood Feb 1958

Physical Fitness And Physical Education Programs In Selected Schools Of South Dakota, Joe Lockwood

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Numerous fitness testing activities are in progress in our public schools of the United States today. As a result of this testing many physical educators believe physical education programs should stress basic conditioning activities. Physical education can be better taught and promoted if knowledge of present status is obtained through testing. These testing programs also create interest in the fitness of youth. The purpose of this study is to analyze the physical fitness and the physical education programs or selected schools in South Dakota by administering the Kraus-Weber Test of Minimum Muscular Fitness and the AAHPER Physical Fitness Test, utilizing …

The Effect Of Horseradish Peroxidase On Some Organic Peroxides, Dennis Lietz Jan 1958

The Effect Of Horseradish Peroxidase On Some Organic Peroxides, Dennis Lietz

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Horseradish peroxidase is a well-known enzyme and one that is often studied. It is well suited for enzyme studies due to its availability, relative ease of preparation, and stability. Although a wealth of knowledge has been gained about this enzyme, very little can actually be said about the mechanism of the reaction. Much of the work that has been done has been concerned with the reaction with hydrogen peroxide. Methyl and ethyl hydroperoxides have also been studied in some detail but only a very few references can be found concerning the action of the enzyme on other organic peroxides. The …

Acreage Response Of South Dakota Wheat Producers To Expected Price Changes, 1955, Richard Hoyt Kruse

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Prices have long been considered to be an important factor influencing agricultural production. The diversity of views as to the effectiveness of prices in allocating resources in agriculture has served to emphasize the need for further research on this problem. South Dakota is primarily an agricultural state and is vitally concerned with the problem of adjustment. Geographic and economic conditions in South Dakota are widely different from other parts of the nation. This study was undertaken in order that legislators and other policy makers might have access to more research results in formulating future agricultural policies. The purpose of this …

The Amino Acid Composition Of Four Varieties Of Rice From India, Devaki B. Kripalani Jan 1958

The Amino Acid Composition Of Four Varieties Of Rice From India, Devaki B. Kripalani

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In recent years, emphasis has been placed on the evaluation of protein quality rather than the total quantity of protein in foods. This is indeed a timely approach, as utilization of the amino acids, which are constituents of proteins, is dependent on all of the essential amino acids being present simultaneously and in proper proportion. Because rice is widely used by the people in India and since there is no particularly rich source of protein, other than the pulses, in the diet of common people, more information on the amino acid composition of the foods (especially rice) commonly consumed, is …

The Development And Present Status Of The Intramural Sports Program For Men In The Schools Of The North Central Intercollegiate Athletic Conference And The South Dakota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, Clayton Paul Ketterling Jan 1958

The Development And Present Status Of The Intramural Sports Program For Men In The Schools Of The North Central Intercollegiate Athletic Conference And The South Dakota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, Clayton Paul Ketterling

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In light of the accepted benefits derived from participation in the intramural sports program, educators and physical educators are quite concerned about the present status of intramural sports and are seeking means for the improvement of intramural sports. This can be done by scrutinizing the intramural sports program in two intercollegiate athletic conferences and discovering ways and means of improvement. They are also aware of the great contribution, which the intramural sports program presents, if properly organized and administered. There is always a constant alertness to the various trends and forces which contribute to the intramural sports program. It is …

The Changing Traditional Value System Of The Dakota Indian: A Study Of The Conflicting Value Systems Of The Dakota Indian And Western Civilization, Clinton J. Jesser Jan 1958

The Changing Traditional Value System Of The Dakota Indian: A Study Of The Conflicting Value Systems Of The Dakota Indian And Western Civilization, Clinton J. Jesser

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

One of the conclusions of anthropologists is that of cultural variability and the relativity of value systems. This means that the designs for living with its system of moral values which one society has evolved may differ considerably from those of another. Each society has their unique value system (moral code). The Dakota Indians have (or had) theirs and the people of Western civilization have theirs. As a result of the culture contact of these two groups over the past seventy-five years, the Dakota Indian has been exposed to, even coerced to follow, a value system different than his own. …

An Electronic Fluid Flow Analyzer For Pipeline Networks, Harold Charles Falk Jan 1958

An Electronic Fluid Flow Analyzer For Pipeline Networks, Harold Charles Falk

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

To the engineer dealing with fluid flow in distribution networks such as urban water distribution systems, the study of flow and pressure throughout the system is a complex problem involving tedious calculations unless some sort of analogue aid is given him. The McIlroy Fluid Network Analyzer, devised in 1948 by the late Malcolm S. McIlroy, Professor of Electrical Engineering at Cornell University, has been an invaluable aid to the person investigating this problem of fluid network analysis. This analyzer, however, is quite expensive, and it seems quite likely that a more inexpensive analyzer can be developed using a somewhat different …

Steam Condensate Corrosion Study Of Return Line Deterioration At South Dakota State College Power Plant, Kenneth Duane Christianson Jan 1958

Steam Condensate Corrosion Study Of Return Line Deterioration At South Dakota State College Power Plant, Kenneth Duane Christianson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this experimental work was to determine and analyze the type, rate, and causes of corrosion in the South Dakota State college steam power plant condensate lines. Since corrosion at this power plant requires an excessive amount of money for labor and pipe replacement, an investigation leading to reduction in corrosion would justify this study and would benefit other people who have to contend with the hard waters present in South Dakota. The method used to determine the rate of corrosion was the installation of a corrosion tester in the condensate discharge line of the hot water heaters …

Results Obtained From New And Remodeled Poultry Houses In South Dakota, Boyd J. Bonzer

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this survey was to attempt, in an organized way, to determine the opinion of a group of flock owners who were using poultry house recommendations included in South Dakota College Extension Circular 516, Modern Poultry Housing, March, 1956. Early in 1958 the circular was in short supply for the second time since the original printing. As a result, the Extension Poultry Office had been granted authority to have another supply printed. At this time it seemed important to delay reprinting the circular until some of its contents could be evaluated. An attempt to determine how many of …

The Effects Of Relaxin On The Composition Of Bovine Milk, Chris H. Nissen Jan 1958

The Effects Of Relaxin On The Composition Of Bovine Milk, Chris H. Nissen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Protoplasm is a fragile substance keeping its homeostatic properties by many physiochemical phenomena. Much is known about the properties of protoplasm; but it is, perhaps, only meager when compared to what is yet to be learned. Such physical changes as electrical impulses, diffusion, and oxidation – to mention a few – are necessary for protoplasm to retain its integrity. In higher animals, particularity, for our purpose, mammals, protoplasm is sustained by different body system working harmoniously together to supply raw materials that remove waste, and govern all endeavors. One should not infer that single called animals have a more simple …

The Blood Picture In Correlation With Bloat, Dale A. Yarns Jan 1958

The Blood Picture In Correlation With Bloat, Dale A. Yarns

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Bloat may spell disaster to any farmer on a given day. This kind of disaster is typical and not infrequent in ruminates especially cattle and sheep. Bloat affects polygastrics, why not monogastrics? Ruminants or polygastrics have a four compartment stomach utilizing protozoa and bacteria similar to a fermentation vat which catabolizes complex substrates into simple digestible nutrients while the monogastrics rely on secretions from the stomach lining. Primarily fermentation takes are water and larger amount of free gas, which can accumulate in the rumen when disposal is impaired. Why do animals dispose of these large quantities of gas 364 days …
