The Development And Testing Of A Fire Simulator Exercise, Don A. Clymer

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A forest fire simulation exercise was developed for the purpose of supplementing forest fire instruction, presenting students with decision-making situations encountered on forest fires, and introducing them to the fire simulator at Stephen F. Austin State University. The final exercise was developed after preliminary work and development of a more simple exercise. The problems with equipment, recruitment of simulator personnel, and the development and execution of the simulator exercises are discussed. Scheduling adequate time for practice, and providing adequate personnel training were found to be the major obstacles in simulator use. Future fire simulator use at SFA will be dependent …

Taxation Of Cooperatives In South Dakota : An Evaluation Of Selected Tax Proposals, Marc R. Wiitala May 1972

Taxation Of Cooperatives In South Dakota : An Evaluation Of Selected Tax Proposals, Marc R. Wiitala

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Attempts to reform South Dakota's tax system will undoubtedly affect cooperatives. The economic viability of cooperatives depends in part on the economic impact of the tax system. Since cooperatives play a significant role in the South Dakota economy, it is necessary for policymakers to understand both how cooperatives will be affected by different aspects of the tax system and what consequence this will have for communities. The cooperative form of enterprise is dissimilar in many respects from other forms of economic enterprise (i.e., corporations, single proprietorships and partnerships). The economic philosophy of cooperative enterprise which forms the basis for developing …

An Integrated Circuit Analog Computer, Sthaporn Udomsin May 1972

An Integrated Circuit Analog Computer, Sthaporn Udomsin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The Heathkit Model EC-1 Educational Analog Computer, priced at $199.95, is the least expensive general-purpose analog computer on the market. This computer contains nine unstabilized vacuum tube de amplifiers with de open loop voltage gain of about 1000. The low amplifier gain, and amplifier drift limit the accuracy of the solution. Results obtained are sometimes confusing. Many integrated circuit operational amplifiers available on the market seem to give much better performance, priced from a few dollars in monolithic form up to hundreds of dollars in hybrid form. The low-cost operational amplifiers, designed for various applications, are usually not intended for …

Comparative Study Of Constant Voltage And Constant Current Electroanesthesia, Anand Vithal Tulpule May 1972

Comparative Study Of Constant Voltage And Constant Current Electroanesthesia, Anand Vithal Tulpule

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In the field of anesthesia, drugs are used extensively, however; electro anesthesia or the use of electric current to achieve anesthesia is also being studied because of its excellent recovery characteristics. This thesis is a comparative study of different techniques of achieving electro anesthesia. Pharmacologically, general anesthesia is a completely irreversible converging depression of certain central nervous system functions wherein respiration, circulation and the vital life support mechanisms are not seriously impaired. Clinically, general anesthesia is a production of unconsciousness, some degree of areflexia, muscular relaxation and varying degrees of respiratory depression in an orderly progression. Electro anesthesia can be …

Impulse Voltage Breakdown Strength Vs. Temperature Of Octafluoropropane (Ca Fa) Gas Exposed To Uniform And Non-Uniform Fields, Dinesh N. Taneja

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of my thesis is to investigate the impulse voltage breakdown strength of Octafluoropropane gas as a function of the temperature of the gas. The standard 1.5 x 40f4sec. positive polarity impulse waveshape was used in alt the tests. The investigation was made with and without a weak source of irradiation present near the eel I. Two types of electrode systems were used: three fourth inch sphere to grounded plane which represented a fairly uniform field, and a point to grounded plane representing a highly non-uniform field. The tests were carried out to room temperature to a temperature of …

Primary Production And Nutrient Limitation In Two Prairie Lakes, Roger A. Steinberg May 1972

Primary Production And Nutrient Limitation In Two Prairie Lakes, Roger A. Steinberg

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Two eutrophic northern prairie lakes, Lake Cochrane and Lake Hendricks, were sampled regularly for chemical characteristics, temperature, transparency, phytoplankton and zooplankton populations. Primary production was determined by the "light" and "dark" bottle technique. Values for the 1971 summer study period ranged from a low of 59.l7 mg C fixed/m2/hr. to a high of 296,67 with a mean of 151.67 for Lake Cochrane. Values for Lake Hendricks ranged from 25.00 to 194.17 with a mean of 110.83. The possibilities of nutrient limitation were investigated through nutrient enrichment experiments in the field. Production was generally not enhanced and was sometimes inhibited by …

Germination And Vegetative Propagation Of Native Prairie Forbs, James T. Sorensen May 1972

Germination And Vegetative Propagation Of Native Prairie Forbs, James T. Sorensen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In the late 1960's and early 1970's there arose an increased awareness of the ecological relationships of nature to man. Although this relationship has been known for some time and numerous books have been written on the subject, public awareness has been slow in coming. But for some unknown reason man has taken a turn to nature. He is becoming more involved with conservation of nature and appreciative of its aesthetic beauty. With this new awareness there has come a new era of camping, hiking, and riding, to mention only a few activities which man needs or wants to enable …

Classification Error Using Quantized Data, David V. Serreyn May 1972

Classification Error Using Quantized Data, David V. Serreyn

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The ability to make the correct decision is an ability that is perhaps desired by all human beings. Being able to make a correct decision is a function of the amount of information that is available to the decision maker. His ability to make a decision is enhanced by the use of machines specially designed for obtaining information or making decisions such as an electronic computer. Such is the case in the application of pattern recognition to a remote sensing problem. Pattern recognition is defined here as techniques which help distinguish between several classes such that the classification error is …

Examination Of Transannular Participation Via Scf-Mo Calculations And Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopy, Ronald D. Schultz

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Since the advent of the computer the chemist bas taken great strides in bringing the mathematical aspects of chemical systems up to date Before this time physical data on a tremendous number of different chemical systems had constantly been accumulating without theoretical backing. However, now with the tools available the chemist can at last begin the tedious and difficult task of explaining the data he has been receiving. One particular area of mathematical interest in chemistry is that which deals with the energy of a particular chemical system. In order to study this area of chemistry, theoretical or semiempirical energy …

Inventory Control Of Deteriorating Items, George C. Philip Apr 1972

Inventory Control Of Deteriorating Items, George C. Philip

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The problem of the control and maintenance of inventories of physical goods is common to most enterprises. In the past, inventories were considered as the 'graveyard' of American business, because surplus stock was a principal cause for business failures. However, in large scale enterprises the inventory system may become too large and complex to be analyzed intuitively and any deviation from the optimum inventory policy would mean substantial losses. As a result of the current small profit margins, proper inventory control has become even more important. The basic concept in inventory control consists of striking a balance between the cost …

Influence Of Freezing Water Samples Prior To Chemical Analysis, Roger Ray Patocka Apr 1972

Influence Of Freezing Water Samples Prior To Chemical Analysis, Roger Ray Patocka

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The need to collect and analyze samples of water resources periodically has been realized for many years by people concerned. with the use and preservation of water resources. As water use increased, routine analysis of water quality also increased. In order to obtain representative results of analyses, care must be taken to obtain samples which are representative of the existing field conditions. Care must also be taken to have a sample which is representative of the field conditions at the time the sample is being analyzed. The time lapse between collection and analysis of water samples can become quite lengthy …

Study Of Laminar Heat Transfer In A Cone, Chang-Shieng Philip Hsia Apr 1972

Study Of Laminar Heat Transfer In A Cone, Chang-Shieng Philip Hsia

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

When a fluid flows through a conduit of different temperature from itself, a heat exchange occurs between them. In studying the heat transfer of the fluid in the conduit we can obtain information about the rate of heat absorption and losses, the temperature distributions, etc. This information is important in design work and to aid in the correct selection of construction and insulation materials. Sometimes the conduit or a section of the conduit is conical, as for example the diffuser in hydro-turbo machines and air compressors, the nozzles of steam or gas turbines, and various heating or exhaust ducts. Usually …

Attitudes Of Registered Nurses In Designated South Dakota Hospitals Toward Aspects Of Terminal Patient Care And Euthanasia, Sharon Ann Hofland Apr 1972

Attitudes Of Registered Nurses In Designated South Dakota Hospitals Toward Aspects Of Terminal Patient Care And Euthanasia, Sharon Ann Hofland

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The problem under investigation in this study is: "What are the attitudes of professional nurses in designated hospitals in South Dakota toward the practice of passive and active euthanasia, and how do these attitudes vary when controlled for selected social and institutional factors?" Research related to this problem is important in that recent permissive legislative action on the abortion issue caught the nursing profession unprepared, and it is presently attempting to establish a position. To avoid a similar situation on the euthanasia issue, data regarding the current attitudes of nurses concerning the preservation of life and the management of the …

A Study Of Ferroresonant Conditions On Distribution Circuits Involving Cable-Connected Power Transformers, Ronald H. Miller Apr 1972

A Study Of Ferroresonant Conditions On Distribution Circuits Involving Cable-Connected Power Transformers, Ronald H. Miller

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

As far as electric utilities are concerned, ferroresonance is undesirable on distribution or transmission systems because it may result in either transient or sustained over voltages under certain conditions. Lightning arrestor flashover, excessive transformer hum, transformer damage, cable damage, and phase reversals have been attributed to ferroresonance. The probability of ferroresonant conditions resulting in damage to equipment has only relatively recently risen to an appreciable level. The difference lies in the fact that the farroresonant circuit is nonlinear due to the inductive component. This component is a saturable core reactance, which has its impedance value dictated by the saturation characteristic …

Reliability Study Of A Revision Of The Modified Los Angeles Rattler Test Using Class "C" Graded Aggregates, Dallas L. Hofer Apr 1972

Reliability Study Of A Revision Of The Modified Los Angeles Rattler Test Using Class "C" Graded Aggregates, Dallas L. Hofer

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Both the producer and the user are concerned with a characteristic of an aggregate that may be best described as "durability." In a broad sense, durability means the ability of the aggregate to remain unchanged over a fairly long period of time in spite of adverse natural processes or forces to which it is subjected. Durability, as it applies to mineral aggregates, means the ability to resist degradation. Erickson has defined degradation as "A breaking down and/or disintegration of particles of sand, gravel, or stone, primarily due to alteration and subsequent decomposition of their mineral components, accelerated by the action …
