Partial Purification Of Heat Stable Enterotoxin Produced By Escherichia Coli Isolated From A Case Of Porcine Colibacillosis, Lee Ann Zochert Swanson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Colibacillosis (CB) in livestock is an economically important disease caused by the bacterium Escherichia coli. It is estimated that nearly one third of all baby pigs born in South Dakota die prior to weaning, and one fourth of these deaths is believed to be caused by CB (62). Similarly, it has been stated that 6 to 20% of calves born alive die from this disease (3). The term colibacillosis encompasses a group of diseases caused by E. coli in neonatal and weaned animals and humans (3). The several different types of CB are due to the differences in tissue localization …

Jean Thomas' American Folk Song Festival : British Balladry In Eastern Kentucky., Marshall A. Portnoy Jan 1978

Jean Thomas' American Folk Song Festival : British Balladry In Eastern Kentucky., Marshall A. Portnoy

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Serious musicological research initiated in the first decades of the twentieth century in America uncovered vast riches of British folk music that had been transplanted to these shores by early pioneers. In the mountains of Appalachia, traditional British ballads remained miraculously unspoiled, and distinguished researchers from Britain and America published many volumes of such songs. Jean Thomas, a legal stenographer born in eastern Kentucky in 1881, became fascinated with this phenomenon. She came to believe that an annual festival of mountain music would help ensure the survival of this art and, in 1930, she founded the American Folk Song Festival. …

Wildlife Habitat In The James River Valley, South Dakota, L. Paul Schneider Jan 1978

Wildlife Habitat In The James River Valley, South Dakota, L. Paul Schneider

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A wildlife habitat inventory was conducted on the 12 485 ha study area of the James River floodplain in north-eastern South Dakota. Included were vegetation mapping, small mammal trapping, waterfowl breeding pair counts, waterfowl brood counts, bird census routes, and general observations. Natural vegetation consisted of 3181 ha of grassland, 2002 ha of woodland, 1115 ha of savannah, and 392 ha of marshland. Small mammal trapping revealed low densities of mostly white-footed mice (Peromyscus spp.). No vegetation type was more valuable to small mammals than any other. Waterfowl breeding pairs, mostly mallard, blue-winged teal, and wood duck, numbered 244 in …

Monensin, Protein Supplementation And Tylosin For Feedlot Cattle, Roger N. Gates Jan 1978

Monensin, Protein Supplementation And Tylosin For Feedlot Cattle, Roger N. Gates

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Scientific research has made substantial contributions to the efficiency of American agriculture. Livestock producers in particular have benefited from the extensive study of animal nutrition. Nutrient requirements of animals and the nutrient composition of feeds are essential to efficient and economical feeding of farm animals. Research over many years has provided considerable information on animal requirements and feed composition. While there are still many gaps of knowledge in those areas, available information allows wise choice in selecting feedstuffs and using them in various combinations to meet animal requirements for various productive purposes. Feed costs represent the single largest expenditure in …

The study area was found to be predominantly occupied by warm season species. Andropogon scoparius was found to be highest in relative density while Carex was highest in relative frequency. …

Primary Productivity In Lake Cochrane, South Dakota, During And After Sediment-Control Dam Construction, Randall Francis Brich Jan 1978

Primary Productivity In Lake Cochrane, South Dakota, During And After Sediment-Control Dam Construction, Randall Francis Brich

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Lake Cochrane was selected for this study because of its history of superior water transparency (Haertel 1972, 1976b). Significant amounts of silt and chemicals enter the lake with runoff at 3 locations (Haertel unpublished data). Restriction or impediment of runoff at these locations should result in improved water transparency (Haertel 1976b, Siegel 1975). Therefore, East Dakota Conservancy Sub-District and the South Dakota Department of Wildlife, Parks, and Forestry decided to impede runoff waters by means of 3 sediment-control dams incorporated into the perimeter road system of the lake and financed through a grant from the Environmental Protection Agency (Siegel 1975) …

Pregnancy Diagnosis In The Ewe, Michael J. Trapp Jan 1978

Pregnancy Diagnosis In The Ewe, Michael J. Trapp

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The ability to diagnose pregnancy accurately, rapidly and economically before the last six weeks of gestation in the ewe could be of real value as a sheep management tool. An efficient non-surgical pregnancy test could enable the producer to reduce feed costs, increase percent lamb crop and select for fertility. It is important to the health of the ewe and to the survival of the lamb that highly productive animals should be adequately fed. About 75% of the fetus' growth occurs during the last trimester of pregnancy. Therefore undernutrition of the ewe during this part of pregnancy leads to the …

Application Analysis Of A Cellular Geographic Information System, Michael Edward Wehde Jan 1978

Application Analysis Of A Cellular Geographic Information System, Michael Edward Wehde

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

AREAS, the Area REsource Analysis System, was developed by the author as an analytical tool for resource data manipulation in a spatial context. The data base and processing software design factors relevant to economical application are reviewed. The investigation seeks to define a procedure for selection and justification of the grid cell size used to quantify the spatial domain. The performance of a cellular information system is measured in terms of mapping and inventory accuracy. These measures of performance are evaluated for various cellularizations of a single map. The interboundary distance distribution is justified as the only unique characterization of …

The Transfer Of Resistance To Wheat Streak Mosaic Virus (Wsmv) From Wheatgrass (Agropyron Intermedium (Host.) Beauv.) To Common Wheat (Triticum Aestivum L. Em. Thell.) By Irradiation, Harnek S. Sandhu Jan 1978

The Transfer Of Resistance To Wheat Streak Mosaic Virus (Wsmv) From Wheatgrass (Agropyron Intermedium (Host.) Beauv.) To Common Wheat (Triticum Aestivum L. Em. Thell.) By Irradiation, Harnek S. Sandhu

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A virus disease, wheat streak mosaic, has been an important, unsolved problem of winter wheat which is a major crop in South Dakota. F1BC3 monosomic alien addition seeds having three doses of Centurk were irradiated with fast neutrons to translocate a segment of the alien chromosome accounting for immunity from wheat streak mosaic virus to a Centurk chromosome. Immune plants from the irradiated seeds were used as male parents onto Centurk and about 2,000 F1BC4 seeds obtained. Cytological examination of pollen mother cells of 151 resistant F1BC4 plants indicated that the …

Blood Gases And Certain Energy Metabolite Concentrations In Ammonia Intoxicated Sheep, George E. Romkema Jan 1978

Blood Gases And Certain Energy Metabolite Concentrations In Ammonia Intoxicated Sheep, George E. Romkema

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The objectives of this study were to measure the changes occurring in certain blood parameters during acute ammonia intoxication. It was hoped that these changes would reflect and thereby provide insight into the effects of acute ammonia intoxication on metabolic processes. Blood pH, p02, and pC02 were measured in order to observe possible metabolic disturbances as reflected in the acid-base balance. Glucose was measured due to its importance as a basic energy source and metabolic intermediate. Volatile fatty acids were measured because they serve as an important energy source in ruminants. Non-esterified fatty acids and triglycerides were …
