The Posterior Spiracles Of Hypoderma Lineatum De Villers (Diptera: Hypodermatidae) Larvae : Their Morphology And Development, Neal O. Morgan Jan 1957

The Posterior Spiracles Of Hypoderma Lineatum De Villers (Diptera: Hypodermatidae) Larvae : Their Morphology And Development, Neal O. Morgan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

There is little published material aviliable concerning cattle grub spiracles other than descriptions of the external surface of the stigmal plate. The representative species of Oestroid larvae studied by the early European morphologist was the northern cattle grub, Hypoderma bovis (L.) and their published conclusions of its spiracular exploration were meager. Major components of the spiracle such as a common atrium, stigmal plate and the hollow plates connecting these two structures were described to the extent necessary to establish differences between larval groups.

The Effects Of Low Temperature On Survival Of Rabbit Ova, Mansur Ferdows Jan 1957

The Effects Of Low Temperature On Survival Of Rabbit Ova, Mansur Ferdows

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In the field of animal production, genetic characteristics determine to a large extent the quality and the economy of the cattle. To hasten the wide spread dissemination of germ plasm, many commercial farmers have resorted to artificial insemination. Artificial insemination has however, only allowed for the wide spread dissemination of germ plasm from the male. If the female germ plasm could also be more easily disseminated through the highly experimental process of ova transfer, then more than the average number of offspring could be expected from a female in her life time. Because ova transplantation is in its infancy, many …

Aureomycin As Preservative Of Small Animal Bodies, Rudolph G. Griffin Jan 1957

Aureomycin As Preservative Of Small Animal Bodies, Rudolph G. Griffin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

During the last six years research has been conducted on the use of antibiotics in the preservation of foods for human consumption. The first published statement suggesting the use of antibiotics in the preservation of foods was made by Morris B. Jacobs in 1944. The first commercial use of antibiotics in the processing of perishable food became possible on an interstate basis on November 30, 1955. On that date the Pure Food, Drug and Cosmetic Administration approved Aureomycin chlortetracycline for use “in or on uncooked poultry.” The first antibiotics had narrow-spectra and showed little promise. Later there were developed the …

Comparative Effects Of Two Different Physical Education Programs Upon The Physical Fitness And Motor Educability Of Ninth And Tenth Grade Boys, Charles Russell Reynolds Jan 1957

Comparative Effects Of Two Different Physical Education Programs Upon The Physical Fitness And Motor Educability Of Ninth And Tenth Grade Boys, Charles Russell Reynolds

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The matter of being physically fit is not just that of building muscles. Although strengthening exercises are a very important part of a developmental program, the results attained for the individual go beyond this more apparent phase of the process. Along with increasing strength, other such benefits include increased organic vigor, stamina, poise, and an improved mental outlook. Many investigations during the past twenty-five years have substantiated these assumptions. Thus, one of the physical educator’s prime duties is to increase his pupils’ muscular strength, which is basic to all other growth and development. The importance of physical fitness was brought …

A Comparison Of The Arithmetic Background Of Seventh Grade Pupils Who Have Received Their First Six Years Of Schooling In Rural Schools With Those Who Received Their First Six Years Of Schooling In The Pipestone City Schools, Peter P. Spawn

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In the past five year, there has been a trend in Pipestone County, Minnesota, to close the one-room country schools and send these rural children to consolidated town schools. Up to about five years ago, there were many rural schools in the county educating these young children up through the sixth grade, then the children would start Junior High School in one of the four towns in the county with high school facilities: namely Ruthton, Jasper, Edgerton and Pipestone. The program went on this way for many years, but now the closing of these rural schools is about eight percent …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Part I. Studies of the effect of dietary carbohydrate and fat.--Part II. Studies of the effect of adding various fractions of linseed oil meal to the diets, including chemical work on the fractions.

The selenium poisoning problem has attracted much attention in Wyoming and South Dakota. In these two states, the damage to farm animals has been of great concern to farmers and ranchers in certain areas. The search for control measures against selenium poisoning has involved the testing of purified chemical compounds and natural food products. Purified chemical compounds found to be somewhat effective against selenium poisoning have been …

Culture And Conflict In Israel., Hannah Scoggin Jun 1956

Culture And Conflict In Israel., Hannah Scoggin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Times Square went mad with noise and excitement, and a small freighter slipped from its Brooklyn berth into the drama of the night. It was December 31, 1949--midnight-January 1, 1950; and I was on my way to the world in general and Israel and the Near East in particular. To say the words Near East, to hear them spoken, to read the combination of Latin letters, even to think them fleetingly can conjure up for me a haze of incense-tinged dreams in which I see exotic sights, breathe pungent odours, and hear mysterious sounds. The Near East is all this …

A Comparative Study Of The Ancient And Modern Philosophies Of Time With The Biblical View, James C. Sheerer May 1956

A Comparative Study Of The Ancient And Modern Philosophies Of Time With The Biblical View, James C. Sheerer

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

There are two general views of the time time concept present in the world. The classical or Greek concept of time which is cyclical. On the other hand, the Christian view of time is that it is a straight-line and has a definite meaning.

It is the purpose of this study to consider these two views of time. Even though the Greek view is radically different from the Christian view of time, there have been several so-called Christian concepts of time which when analyzed are really the Greek view.

A Comparison Study Of State Farmers And Non-State Farmers On Academic Achievement And Post-High School Accomplishment, Hilding W. Gadda

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This research problem is a study of State Farmers and non-State Farmers of the Eastern Future Farmers of America Chapter at Beadle High School. It ascertains the relationships between the academic achievement of each group and their respective accomplishments after high school graduation. It is also the writer’s intent to determine whether or not the requirements for the State Farmer Degree are correct and proper. Only former members of the local Future Farmers of America chapter now actively established in farming contributed to the study. The Eastern Chapter over a period of nineteen years has had forty-six State Farmers, of …

Growth And Selenium Content Of Wheat As Affected By Applications Of Salts To Soils, Frederick J. Kurpjuweit Jan 1956

Growth And Selenium Content Of Wheat As Affected By Applications Of Salts To Soils, Frederick J. Kurpjuweit

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

For many years livestock in some areas have been subject to a certain sickness. The external symptoms are a rough hair coat, loss of hair from the mane and tail of horses, loss of hair from the tail of cattle, and sore feet. In some extreme cases, an animal’s hooves have been known to drop off. This sickness has been called “Alkali Disease”, because it was believed to be caused by alkali or mineral salts in the soil or water. Later, it became known that forages and grain crops grown in those areas caused this sickness, when fed to animals. …

Effects Of The Intensity Of Grazing On Range Livestock Production, The Native Vegetation, And The Soil Complex, George Mason Van Dyne Jan 1956

Effects Of The Intensity Of Grazing On Range Livestock Production, The Native Vegetation, And The Soil Complex, George Mason Van Dyne

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Maximum sustained livestock production can be obtained only through proper grazing practices on the range and efficient feeding practices in the feedlot. Adjusting livestock numbers to prevent overuse of the range resource is the principle problem in securing purpose of South Dakota’s rangelands. There is considerable variation in the intensity of grazing on rangelands in the state. It is recognized that if a range is stocked too heavily the native vegetation deteriorates, causing decreased forage and livestock production and often considerable soil erosion. It is equally apparent hat too light grazing fails to make use of forage, and total livestock …

Investigations Of Methyl Donors And Linseed Oil Meal In Alleviating Selenium Poisoning, Eriks Leitis Jan 1956

Investigations Of Methyl Donors And Linseed Oil Meal In Alleviating Selenium Poisoning, Eriks Leitis

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The problem of selenium poisoning has been extensively reviewed. Although a considerable amount of work has been done on this problem, the mechanism of the toxic action of selenium is not understood. This work has undertaken as part of an effort to determine the nature of the protective effect of certain substances against selenium poisoning, in that this might aid in understanding its toxic action. The conflicting findings concerning the effectiveness of methionine against selenium poisoning were obtained with a variety of diets and under a variety of other experimental conditions. It appeared, therefore, that certain unknown factors or conditions …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The occurrence of a great number of poultry diseases which affect the respiratory systems of both chickens and turkeys has brought about extensive studies on control measures to curb losses due to these infections. The losses due to these infections are tremendous throughout the poultry producing areas of the world. Infectious laryngotracheitis, Newcastle disease, fowl pox, infectious bronchitis, chronic respiratory disease, infectious sinusitis, fowl cholera and aspergillosis cause similar symptoms and gross lesions (19). Diagnosis and preventive treatment are of extreme importance. Fowl cholera and aspergillosis can be detected by cultural techniques. The other six diseases show differential diagnosis with …

Digestibility Of Rations And Nitrogen Balance By Lambs As Influenced By Animal Fat, Urea, Soybean Meal And Linseed Meal, James King Turner Jan 1956

Digestibility Of Rations And Nitrogen Balance By Lambs As Influenced By Animal Fat, Urea, Soybean Meal And Linseed Meal, James King Turner

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Feed processing and handling of livestock feeds have benefited from the use of fats in many ways. Nutritionally speaking, several reasons in favor of the use of stabilized animal fats in feeds have been reported. However, the optimum level and value of added fats in the rations for ruminants are not well established and further work is needed. It is known that fat is absorbed more slowly from the intestine than either carbohydrates or protein, and this may be an important factor in the utilization of added fat in the diet. Research with urea as a protein sparer has been …
