Acreage Response Of South Dakota Wheat Producers To Expected Price Changes, 1955, Richard Hoyt Kruse Jan 1958

Acreage Response Of South Dakota Wheat Producers To Expected Price Changes, 1955, Richard Hoyt Kruse

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Prices have long been considered to be an important factor influencing agricultural production. The diversity of views as to the effectiveness of prices in allocating resources in agriculture has served to emphasize the need for further research on this problem. South Dakota is primarily an agricultural state and is vitally concerned with the problem of adjustment. Geographic and economic conditions in South Dakota are widely different from other parts of the nation. This study was undertaken in order that legislators and other policy makers might have access to more research results in formulating future agricultural policies. The purpose of this …

The Amino Acid Composition Of Four Varieties Of Rice From India, Devaki B. Kripalani Jan 1958

The Amino Acid Composition Of Four Varieties Of Rice From India, Devaki B. Kripalani

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In recent years, emphasis has been placed on the evaluation of protein quality rather than the total quantity of protein in foods. This is indeed a timely approach, as utilization of the amino acids, which are constituents of proteins, is dependent on all of the essential amino acids being present simultaneously and in proper proportion. Because rice is widely used by the people in India and since there is no particularly rich source of protein, other than the pulses, in the diet of common people, more information on the amino acid composition of the foods (especially rice) commonly consumed, is …

Mysticism In Selected Early Novels Of John Steinbeck, Tom E. Kakonis Jan 1958

Mysticism In Selected Early Novels Of John Steinbeck, Tom E. Kakonis

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this essay is to trace the development of the concept of mysticism from selected early works of John Steinbeck to its culmination in the novel the Grapes of Wrath. The works to be discussed are the following: The Features of Heaven, To a God Unknown, In Dubious Battle, Of Mice and Men, The Red Pony, The Grapes of Wrath, and Sea of Cortez. Such a study requires, a basic, historical knowledge in two other areas. The first involves a familiarity with Oriental specifically Hindu, mystical beliefs; the second, the early backgrounds of mysticism in American literature as …

The Physiology And Some Nutritional Aspects Of A Rumen Bacterium, Norma P. Christopherson Jan 1958

The Physiology And Some Nutritional Aspects Of A Rumen Bacterium, Norma P. Christopherson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

One of the interesting symbiotic relationships in nature is that existing between the ruminants and their microbial population. This arrangement has solved for them the problem of existing on an herbivorous diet. Most mammals can derive little benefit from the potentially available energy in plant materials, which is locked in the complex, insoluble polysaccharide, cellulose. Cellulase is not a mammalian enzyme, but it is part of the chemical machinery of a number of bacteria, some species of which reside in the rumen. Many different organisms are present and their biochemical activities have not as yet been completely delineated. All of …

An Organism Resembling Sphaerophorus Necrophorus Isolated From A Beef Liver Abscess, James C. Canada Jan 1958

An Organism Resembling Sphaerophorus Necrophorus Isolated From A Beef Liver Abscess, James C. Canada

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Condemned beef livers cause a loss of several million dollars each year. This loss is felt not only by the meat packer, but the animal husbandryman as well as the consumer. Percentagewise, the United States annually condemns in federally inspected meat packing plants between two and 20 percent of all beef livers. These beef livers are principally of three pathological types. These types include liver abscesses, telangiectasia, and the “sawdust” liver. Little is known of the three liver conditions in regard to their causative agents. By microscopic examination usually one finds gram-negative, granular filaments approximately 100 microns in length present …

Results Obtained From New And Remodeled Poultry Houses In South Dakota, Boyd J. Bonzer Jan 1958

Results Obtained From New And Remodeled Poultry Houses In South Dakota, Boyd J. Bonzer

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this survey was to attempt, in an organized way, to determine the opinion of a group of flock owners who were using poultry house recommendations included in South Dakota College Extension Circular 516, Modern Poultry Housing, March, 1956. Early in 1958 the circular was in short supply for the second time since the original printing. As a result, the Extension Poultry Office had been granted authority to have another supply printed. At this time it seemed important to delay reprinting the circular until some of its contents could be evaluated. An attempt to determine how many of …

The Effects Of Relaxin On The Composition Of Bovine Milk, Chris H. Nissen Jan 1958

The Effects Of Relaxin On The Composition Of Bovine Milk, Chris H. Nissen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Protoplasm is a fragile substance keeping its homeostatic properties by many physiochemical phenomena. Much is known about the properties of protoplasm; but it is, perhaps, only meager when compared to what is yet to be learned. Such physical changes as electrical impulses, diffusion, and oxidation – to mention a few – are necessary for protoplasm to retain its integrity. In higher animals, particularity, for our purpose, mammals, protoplasm is sustained by different body system working harmoniously together to supply raw materials that remove waste, and govern all endeavors. One should not infer that single called animals have a more simple …

The Blood Picture In Correlation With Bloat, Dale A. Yarns Jan 1958

The Blood Picture In Correlation With Bloat, Dale A. Yarns

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Bloat may spell disaster to any farmer on a given day. This kind of disaster is typical and not infrequent in ruminates especially cattle and sheep. Bloat affects polygastrics, why not monogastrics? Ruminants or polygastrics have a four compartment stomach utilizing protozoa and bacteria similar to a fermentation vat which catabolizes complex substrates into simple digestible nutrients while the monogastrics rely on secretions from the stomach lining. Primarily fermentation takes are water and larger amount of free gas, which can accumulate in the rumen when disposal is impaired. Why do animals dispose of these large quantities of gas 364 days …

The Moral Order Of William Faulkner, Shirley Lease Kay Jan 1958

The Moral Order Of William Faulkner, Shirley Lease Kay

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to indicate William Faulkner’s belief in a moral order and then to show how this may be taught in the novel Light in August. I believe that there is more to Faulkner that “the agony and the rhetoric” and that his works are not merely” [tales] told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, and signifying nothing.” By considering our questions, I hope to establish the type of moral order in which Faulkner believes. These questions are (1) What is Faulkner’s attitude toward nature? (2) What is evil to him? (3) How does …

An Attempt To Develop Resistance In The Udder Against Streptococcus Dysgalactiae And Escherichia Coli, Donald E. Otterby Jan 1958

An Attempt To Develop Resistance In The Udder Against Streptococcus Dysgalactiae And Escherichia Coli, Donald E. Otterby

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The problem of mastitis in dairy animals has received much attention in recent years. As the business of dairying has developed and grown, mastitis has become more significant to the farmer and the processor. The economic loss from reduced production and sale of milk, loss of breeding animals, veterinary and medical fees is paramount. Much of the emphasis when dealing with mastitis has been on cure rather than prevention. Despite the extensive investigations of antibiotics and other chemo-therapeutic agents as a cure for mastitis, a completely satisfactory answer to the mastitis problem has not been found. Recent research has suggested …

Listeria Monocytogenes, Alvin G. Fiscus Jan 1957

Listeria Monocytogenes, Alvin G. Fiscus

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Organisms of the genus Listeria have stimulated a great deal of interest as a result of their pathogenicity and affinity for the central nervous system. The clinical condition produced by this organism is known as listeriosis, or in ruminants as “circling disease”. The organism was described by Murray, Webb and Swann in 1926 as the causative agent of an eqizootic infection in laboratory rabbits and guinea pigs. Their observations showed that the disease produced emaciation, abundant exudate in serous cavities, necrotic foci in and on various organs, and a marked increase in monocytes circulating in the blood stream. The name …

Some Observations Pertaining To The Effects Of Relaxin Upon The Bovine, Vincent Allen Hall Jan 1957

Some Observations Pertaining To The Effects Of Relaxin Upon The Bovine, Vincent Allen Hall

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The process of birth normally follows a set pattern. The main steps in chronological order are: labor, opening of the cervix, and delivering the young. The cervix serves an important function in reproduction. The cervix is the constricted portion separating the uterus and the vagina, and consists primarily of thick connective tissues especially constructed in folds forming a hollow tube. Through the cervix passes sperm, menstrual debris and in pregnancy the newborn. During pregnancy a mucous plug forms in the cervix and keeps out foreign material and bacteria. In the non-pregnant cow the opening is small. The cervix opening is …

Bloat Results From Various Drenchings Including Effectiveness Of Penicillin For Prevention, Clarence Leonard Moore Jan 1957

Bloat Results From Various Drenchings Including Effectiveness Of Penicillin For Prevention, Clarence Leonard Moore

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Body conformation is associated with function among all classes of livestock. Dairy cattle type deals with characteristics indicating ability to produce milk and butterfat economically along with breed character and other values of an aesthetic nature. In order to have economical milk and butterfat production, the dairy cow should possess that type of body conformation which is able to withstand the rigors of disease, reproduction and year after year milk production. A large percentage of dairy cattle sold in South Dakota and surrounding territory, whether for breeding purpose or commercial production, are evaluated primarily on the basis of their type. …

Growth And Physiology Of A Soil Organism Which Is Resistant To The Toxic Effects Of Sodium Selenite, John C. Mickelson Jan 1957

Growth And Physiology Of A Soil Organism Which Is Resistant To The Toxic Effects Of Sodium Selenite, John C. Mickelson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The occurrence of selenium in soils of the United States and its cinnection with a disease of livestock originally called selenium poisoning , is well established. The states of North Dakota and South Dakota have both reported areas of land on which the disease occurs. In 1954, soil samples (from areas in South Dakota in which there is solenium poisoning) we've brought to the South Dakota State College Experiment Stot1on for analysis. From one of those samples, a bacterium was found which was noted as being resistant to the toxicity of selenium and also as being capable of reducing sodium …

The Effect Of Vitamin D. Supplementation On The Growth And Development Of Swine, Darwin Eugene Stolte Jan 1957

The Effect Of Vitamin D. Supplementation On The Growth And Development Of Swine, Darwin Eugene Stolte

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Vitamin D, through its specific action in calcium and phosphorus metabolism and bone growth, is necessary for the production of a sound, well-developed skeleton which his essential to profitable pork production. The fact that common feeds used in swine rations, especially grains and plant protein supplements, are lacking in calcium, vitamin D and in some cases phosphorus, accounts in part for the appearance of rickets and kindred deficiency symptoms under many practical conditions. Rickets and related bone diseases are normally abated by sufficient exposure to direct sunlight. However, in instances where swine are confined indoors or do not receive sufficient …

A Genetic Analysis Of Economic Characteristics Of Range Beef Heifers, Keith O. Zoellner Jan 1957

A Genetic Analysis Of Economic Characteristics Of Range Beef Heifers, Keith O. Zoellner

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The beef cattle industry is one og the major sources of rural income in South Dakota. According to the South Dakota Crop and Livestock Reporting Services (1956), there were 1,492,000 beef cows and yearling beef heifers on the farms and ranches in South Dakota as of January 1, 1957. They also reported that sales from cattle and calves amounted to approximately 34.6 percent of the gross farm and ranch income in the state. Since the beef cattle industry is a major source of the farm and ranch income in South Dakota, any improvement in the performance of beef cattle will …

A Study Of Streptobacillus Moniliformis Causative Agent Of Rat Bite Fever, Harry J. Bowers Jan 1957

A Study Of Streptobacillus Moniliformis Causative Agent Of Rat Bite Fever, Harry J. Bowers

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A bizarre organism was isolated in 1953 in a Castaneda blood culture flask in an attempt to determine the cause of septicemia in a child. It was discovered that the organism causing this septicemia was morphologically and physiologically similar to one of the organisms causing rat bite fever, which to this time had never been isolated in South Dakota. It was impossible under the circumstances to make any positive identification of the organism. Microscopic slides were saved with the expectation that circumstances would become favorable for research with the suspected organism, Streptocaillus monilformis. It was decided that a study centered …

Farm Business Management Data And Practices In The North James Area, Roland J. Brunsma Jan 1957

Farm Business Management Data And Practices In The North James Area, Roland J. Brunsma

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The farmer today is in an unfavorable position economically. The costs of farming have increased steadily over the past several years, while farm product prices have declined. According to statistics published by the Federal Crop and Livestock Reporting Service, South Dakota farmers in 1956 paid 115 percent of 1947-49 prices for goods and services received, while receiving approximately 75 percent of 1947-49 prices for farm products. Because of this “cost-price squeeze,” the farm operator must continually adjust his management practices to changing conditions if he is to maintain or increase his income and level of living. This requires a careful …

Leptospirosis In Cattle And Swine In South Dakota, John P. Mcadaragh Jan 1957

Leptospirosis In Cattle And Swine In South Dakota, John P. Mcadaragh

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Animals infected with Leptospira do not always display the acute signs of the disease but may have a sub-clinical chronic form which may go unnoticed. These infected animals may continue to infect the healthy animals which they contact. The presence of the disease has been demonstrated in almost every state either by the presence of antibodies, identification of the organisms in tissue section, or by culture isolation. The need of information concerning the extent and severity of Leptospira infection of cattle and swine in South Dakota led to this study. Many people are of the opinion that a disease is …
