Analysis Of Summer Spotlighting For Determining Deer Populations Indices, Donald C. Duerre Jan 1959

Analysis Of Summer Spotlighting For Determining Deer Populations Indices, Donald C. Duerre

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Man changes his environment to suit his needs. In doing so he has destroyed forests, plowed the land, and built cities. Deer have adopted themselves to these changes, and in many instances populations have erupted as a result. Their ability to survive advancement of civilization and increasing hunting pressure has made deer the most important big-game animal in America, The importance of deer as a game animal has caused game agencies to institute more intensive management programs. Proper management of this species has long been a problem of game technicians. In order to obtain an optimum annual harvest, the technician …

Genetics Of Resistance To Selenium Poisoning In The Fruit Fly, Drosophila Melangaster, Carl T. Hansen Jan 1959

Genetics Of Resistance To Selenium Poisoning In The Fruit Fly, Drosophila Melangaster, Carl T. Hansen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The objectives of the experiments presented is to study the effects of different concentrations of selenium on reproductive performance. This was necessary in order to determine what concentrations of selenium should be used in subsequent experiments. To determine if natural variation is hereditary and if it can be utilized in breeding for resistance. The relationship of race differences and resistance. There are indications of variation in resistance between different breeds of swine and cattle. The relationship of sex to resistance. There are indications that a sex difference may exist in beef cattle since in some herds bulls are affected more …

The Effects Of Feeding A Ration Containing Erythromycin Thiocyanate To Growing-Finishing, Eldon Walter Juhl Jan 1959

The Effects Of Feeding A Ration Containing Erythromycin Thiocyanate To Growing-Finishing, Eldon Walter Juhl

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A large number of Midwest farmers depend upon the swine enterprise for a part of their annual income. Swine sales constitute a large per cent of the cash farm income in this geographical area and therefore these animals represent a very important phase of livestock production. Approximately 18 per cent of the total cash farm income in South Dakota is obtained from the production of hogs. A successful swine producer is primarily interested in obtaining the greatest return for his financial investment and labor output. In order to attain these goals it is often desirable to feed a highly fortified …

The Effects Of 17-Α-Ethyl-19-Nortestosterone On Extraction Wound Healing, Stanley Miner Shaw Jan 1959

The Effects Of 17-Α-Ethyl-19-Nortestosterone On Extraction Wound Healing, Stanley Miner Shaw

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Since protein anabolic agents are known to affect the rate of protein synthesis, this study was initiated in an effort to determine the effect of a drug of this type on extraction wound healing. A total of twenty-five female, Sprague-Dawley rats ranging in weight from 195-260 gms. were chosen as participants. After a two-week adjustment period, the animals were separated into a control and treatment group. Starting one day prior to extraction and continuing daily for a total of 14 days the treated rats were injected with 1.0 mgm. of 17- alpha-ethyl-19-nortestosterone in 0.04 ml. of a solution of 10% …

Effect Of Various Feed Additives On Gain, Feed Efficiency And Digestibility Of Rations By Lambs, Paul R. Zimmer Mar 1958

Effect Of Various Feed Additives On Gain, Feed Efficiency And Digestibility Of Rations By Lambs, Paul R. Zimmer

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

It is now an established practice to feed continuously certain feed additives in the rations of simple stomach animals for the control of disease, digestive troubles, bloat, internal parasites and for their growth stimulating properties. It is very important that additives of an antibacterial nature in rations for ruminants be studied thoroughly so their beneficial effects, if any, can be determined. If the bacteria are not functioning normally and digesting properly, the animal will suffer. Digestion of the ration would also be affected, and the efficiency of feed conversion would diminish. Supplements to the ruminant ration in the form of …

Studies On The Analysis And Esterification Of Cholesterol, Marvin Lee Withrow Feb 1958

Studies On The Analysis And Esterification Of Cholesterol, Marvin Lee Withrow

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The recent widespread interest in the cause of atherosclerosis in humans has stimulated research in many fields of science. Articles describing cholesterol experiments on humans and lower animals indicate that an elevation of the blood level of cholesterol increases the incidence of atherosclerosis. Bloor and colleagues suggested an interrelationship between the metabolism of cholesterol and the highly unsaturated fatty acids of the blood. In these experiments it was found that the fatty acids present in neutral fat had the lowest unsaturation, the phospholipids contained the fatty acids of intermediate unsaturation, and the fatty acids present in cholesterol esters had the …

Some Effects Of Environment On Laying Hens, Lawrence U. Rubida Feb 1958

Some Effects Of Environment On Laying Hens, Lawrence U. Rubida

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Good management dictates that laying hens be confined; so, environment to a laying hen is made up of conditions within the house in which she lives. These conditions, in South Dakota, range from poultry houses that put the hen under condition of stress to houses that offer the hen many comforts. The principal question is, does money spent on improving the conditions within a house pay for itself? Payments could be in the form of lower mortality, increased production, better feed efficiency or a combination of any or all factors. Among the environmental conditions that may affect the hen’s performance …

Stilbestrol For Growing-Fattening Cattle, Dean Vinton Radabaugh Feb 1958

Stilbestrol For Growing-Fattening Cattle, Dean Vinton Radabaugh

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The production of beef in South Dakota is one of the largest industries in the state. Those in the business of producing beef are constantly looking for newer methods of management, nutrition and breeding which will economically increase the production of beef. It has been shown that adding diethylstilbestrol to the rations or implanting diethylstilbestrol pellets in the ears will generally economically increase beef production by increasing rate of gains and feed efficiency. Several questions have been raised by livestock producers and research workers since the introduction of stilbestrol in beef cattle production. Some questions are: Does the administration of …

The Effects Of Colchicine On An Inbred Line Of Corn, Raymond A. Moore Feb 1958

The Effects Of Colchicine On An Inbred Line Of Corn, Raymond A. Moore

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Investigation with mutagenic agents to increase variability in plants have met with some success in the improvement of agronomic crops. One such agent is colchicine, a poisonous alkaloid extracted from the autumn-flowering crocus (Colchicum autumale L.). Evidence of the mutagenic nature of colchicine without changing the chromosome numbers, has been shown in sorghum. Observations of the variability induced in sorghum lines by colchicine treatment inspired the present study which was undertaken to determine what effects this chemical might have on an inbred line of corn. Results similar to those in sorghum could be of utmost importance in corn breeding since …

The Effect Of Horseradish Peroxidase On Some Organic Peroxides, Dennis Lietz Jan 1958

The Effect Of Horseradish Peroxidase On Some Organic Peroxides, Dennis Lietz

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Horseradish peroxidase is a well-known enzyme and one that is often studied. It is well suited for enzyme studies due to its availability, relative ease of preparation, and stability. Although a wealth of knowledge has been gained about this enzyme, very little can actually be said about the mechanism of the reaction. Much of the work that has been done has been concerned with the reaction with hydrogen peroxide. Methyl and ethyl hydroperoxides have also been studied in some detail but only a very few references can be found concerning the action of the enzyme on other organic peroxides. The …
