Handwritten recipe for "preventing cooties" from the diary of an unknown female author, 1918. She was possibly a resident of Memphis, Tennessee. The recipe is on the first page while the rest of her diary consists of her daily domestic activities and visits from family and friends.

The recipe states, "After bathing rub inside of the underclothing with a mixture of four parts of mercurial ointment and one part of vaseline or lard."

Handwritten letter from Carlise to someone nicknamed "Shorty", presumably Mary Ardenne Hinson. The letter is written on Seymour A. Mynders Club letterhead. Carlise apologizes for a long gap in correspondence and ends the letter with a poem:
"Oh, my Beloved, fill the Cup that clears To-day of Past Regrets and Future Fears To-morrow! - Why To-morrow I ___ to Myself with Yesterday's Seven Thousand Years."

R.E. Johnson To George Morris, Commercial Appeal, 1931

Carbon copy of a letter written by R.E. Johnson to George Morris, the president of the "Commercial Appeal" newspaper in Memphis, Tennessee, on September 8, 1931. Johnson tells Morris that "Commercial Appeal" reporters witnessed fraudulent black voter registration certificates being made out in Jim Mulcahy's bars and home and implies these reporters have been unwilling to report the abuses for fear of alienating Mulcahy. He also attacks Police Commissioner Clifford Davis for allowing Mulcahy to operate.

Letter from Albert H. Wilhelm of Ben Avon, Pennsylvania, to R.E. Johnson in Memphis, Tennessee, written on June 5, 1927. A friend of Johnson's, Wilhelm criticizes President Calvin Coolidge's tardy response to the disastrous Mississippi River flood that year. He notes that instead of trying to enlist the help of the Red Cross, Coolidge should have mobilized the army much earlier. He praises the appointment of Vice-President Herbert Hoover to head the relief effort.

Stating Hoover's victory in Tennessee in the presidential election is possible but only "if the will and mandate of the people is protected in such vote stealing centers as Memphis, Tenn., Nashville, Tenn., and Erwin, Unicoi County, Tenn." Johnson encloses a copy of a letter he sent the same day to Everett Sanders, the chairman of the Republican National Committee in Chicago. Clay Burton Vance advertisement for life readings. Vance was a conman in the early 20th century who became well known internationally for selling false astrological readings. Vance, which was the pseudonym of Elmer Sidney Prather, would sell personal "Complete Life Readings" to people for a large fee, but provided them with a mass produced reading instead.

The letter includes a postscript addressed to Harry in which Suzie beseeches Harry to come be with her.

Handwritten letter to Harry Fletcher from a woman identified as "Lovedae". In the letter she mentions a woman that wants to rent a room from her. She says that she will not rent to room if Harry plans to come and stay with her but also that she needs the money. She asks Harry if he plans to divorce his wife or return to stay with Lovedae. Other letters from Lovedae indicate that she lives in Jackson, Mississippi.

Vol. 1, No. 8 of "The Eastern Arkansas World", a weekly African American newspaper published in the 1940s in Earle, Arkansas. The newspaper was published by Thomas J. Brown to "promote unity and good will among the races". This issue included articles about black schools in the area and showed the 1940 graduating class of Hollendale High School in Hollendale, Miss. There is also an small article about David Lee Scott, a young black aviator from Greenville, Mississippi.
