This handwritten letter, dated October 1, 1843, is written from Nathaniel P. Banks, a Union general during the Civil War to James Redpath, an American journalist and anti-slavery activist. The letter is a response to Redpath's request for Banks to go to Brunswick, New York on December 16 and updates Redpath on Banks' current travel plans. The back of the letter has Banks' name, location, and the date. This letter was found tipped into volume four, between pages 326-327 of Abraham Lincoln : A History by John G. Nicolay and John Hay.

Fendall, Esq. to inform Fendall that the enclosed letters were "for the purpose of franking to the persons named in them." The term "franking referred to franking privileges—the ability to send mail by one's signature rather than by postage. This note was found tipped into volume two of Abraham Lincoln : A History by John G. Nicolay and John Hay.
