Bystander Cpr Training For Laypersons And Caregivers Of Those At High Risk For Sudden Cardiac Arrest: An Integrative Review, Ragan Scott
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Sudden Cardiac arrest (SCA) is the leading cause of death in the United States (U.S.) with approximately 475,000 deaths annually (AHA, 2018). Approximately 70% of these deaths occur as out-of-hospital cardiac arrests (OHCA; AHA, 2018). Currently, the survival rate for OHCA is 10% with the lack of bystander CPR being a large contributor to the high mortality rate (AHA, 2018). This project evaluated the literature related to bystander CPR training to determine if this training improves willingness to perform bystander CPR and overcomes common barriers that inhibit the initiation of bystander CPR in OHCA. The projected outcome for this project …
Walking Through Smoke: Implementation Of The 5a'S For Smoking Cessation Counseling In Rural Virginia, Cristina Maria Minotti
Walking Through Smoke: Implementation Of The 5a'S For Smoking Cessation Counseling In Rural Virginia, Cristina Maria Minotti
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Tobacco use represents a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in the U.S. and is a contributing risk factor for multiple pulmonary, cardiovascular, and oncologic diseases. Despite documented evidence of these health hazards, use of tobacco products remains high, particularly in rural America. While providers may frequently question patients regarding tobacco use and inform patients of associated health hazards, a standardized, structured process for delivering smoking cessation counseling (SCC) is rarely established in practice settings. One such method for standardization of SCC is the 5A’s (Ask, Advise, Assess, Assist, Arrange) model which has a robust body of evidence to support …
Nighttime Quiet In The Intensive Care Unit: An Integrative Review, Heather Rae Smith
Nighttime Quiet In The Intensive Care Unit: An Integrative Review, Heather Rae Smith
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Excessive environmental noise in the ICU often negatively impacts patient sleep. The World Health Organization (WHO) and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) have published recommendations for hospital decibel levels, but the literature indicates that noise levels in the ICU often exceed these values. Patients experience disturbed sleep and rarely enter into N3 and REM sleep. The integrative review examined both the patients’ and healthcare workers’ perception of noise in the ICU environment to identify contributors and suggested interventions to mitigate these occurrences. In addition, this study evaluated objective measurements of patient sleep to further determine how well patients were sleeping in …

A Causal-Comparative Study Of Christian School Special Needs Student Test Scores Based On Teacher Degree, Daniel Lee Riley
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Special education is a field that is expanding at a rapid pace. A second field of education that has been in existence for only a few decades is the modern Christian K-12 day school. The merging of the two of these phenomena in education creates a research platform that few have studied in unison. There is little research when pairing these two fields, but the need to study them is great. This study will focus on the academic achievement of students with special needs, based upon standardized math and reading test scores, using the Stanford 10 (SAT 10) standardized assessment …

The Acts Model Designed To Make Disciples, Phillip Harold Stevens
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Churches are in decline. Every relevant statistic reveals the church has a major problem, and if it is to continue to survive it must make changes. The church is not evangelizing, not making disciples, and not making an impact in our communities. Every year it is estimated that over 4,000 churches close each year. The organism founded by Jesus is being overcome. Winfall Baptist Church, located in Gladys, VA, was arguably a church on the decline. Members of the Winfall community believed the church building would one day end up becoming a hay barn. Based on Scripture, surveys of current …

Tying Wellness Into Action: A Phenomenological Study Of Graduate Counseling Fieldwork Students At A Christian University, Daniel E. Reyes
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Mental health professionals take more days off for illness than other health-care professionals do, and many practicing counselors perceive their colleagues as stressed, distressed, and even impaired. Hence, counselor-education programs should focus on equipping future practitioners to practice better self-care when dealing with work-related stress. There appear to be numerous gaps in the literature on encouraging wellness in counselors-in-training (CITs), and no rigorous empirical study has been conducted on CITs’ wellness at a faith-based institution. This phenomenological study focused on investigating the lived wellness experiences of seven graduate counseling students at a Christian university, in a program accredited by the …

Effective Pastoral Leadership To Catalyze A Disciple-Making Church, Juan Victor Acevedo
Effective Pastoral Leadership To Catalyze A Disciple-Making Church, Juan Victor Acevedo
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Most churches are in a current state of plateau or declining. Although there are several variables that contribute to this status, a lack of willing and qualified disciplers have contributed to it. Why is there a lack of willing and qualified disciplers? Do pastors understand their biblical role as equippers? Does the church understand their role in ministry? Through the result of this research, the researcher will propose a biblical-based discipleship plan as well as other biblical recommendations to ameliorate the areas identified with deficiencies to improve leadership as well as the discipleship-making process.
