Understanding The African American Male Student Experience Of Being Diagnosed With Emotional Disturbance Through The Use Of Counter-Storytelling, Sara Ordaz Dec 2021

Understanding The African American Male Student Experience Of Being Diagnosed With Emotional Disturbance Through The Use Of Counter-Storytelling, Sara Ordaz

Doctoral Dissertations

In the U.S. educational system, it is too common to see African American males overrepresented in special education classrooms, including segregated special education settings. African American males continuously experience disproportionate representation and placement in special education, especially under the label of ED (Harry & Anderson, 1994). Twice as many African American students in the United States are receiving services for Emotional Disturbance than their White counterparts.

Students who are labeled with ED have the lowest educational outcomes as well as lower success rates in life than any other disability classification (Merrrell & Walker, 2004). The consequences of the ED label …

The Dissemination And Reproduction Of Dominant Ideologies On Social Media: Reddit Through The Lens Of Color-Blind Racism And Gender-Blind Sexism, Paul Anskat

Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation explores the frameworks of color-blind racism and gender-blind sexism as they are disseminated through the social media site Reddit. I analyze data in the form of posts and comments submitted to the site. Qualitative discourse analysis reveals employment of the frames of color-blindness and gender-blindness as well as narratives which function to anchor the dominant ideologies to apparent lived experiences. This dissertation offers two major contributions to the scholarship of racism and sexism. First, the findings demonstrate that ideologies of race and gender are often articulated through common narratives and intertwined rhetoric, establishing a foundation for future research …

A Minority Within A Minority: Exploring Identity Development In Relation To Mental Health Outcomes Within The Black Deaf Community, Nekolas Milton

Doctoral Dissertations

Black Deaf people are a double minority group that faces discrimination on multiple fronts. There is little literature on the relationship of cultural identity development and mental health concerns of this marginalized group. This study employs a mixed method approach to examine this relationship and explore the extant culturally tailored interventions targeted towards Black Deaf adults in a clinical setting. There were two phases of this project. Phase 1 included qualitative interviews with service providers of black deaf people to ascertain the type of culturally tailored interventions that are in place for this population. 5 themes emerged: systemic issues, mental …

Experiences Of Uc Santa Barbara Female Alumni Exposed To A Gender-Based Mass Shooting, Erin G. Carpenter

Doctoral Dissertations

Over the past five decades, mass shootings have emerged as a highly politicized, social problem that generates considerable public sentiment and media attention (Elsass et al., 2014; Rocque & Duwe, 2018; Shultz et al., 2014). Moreover, the increase in mass shootings carried out on or near college campuses have led researchers to focus more intently on the predictors and consequences that characterize these types of attacks (Boykin & Orcutt, 2018; Elsass et al., 2014; Fox & Savage, 2009). One college mass shooting that has received limited empirical attention is the 2014 mass shooting that occurred in Isla Vista, a town …

"Money, Money, Money... All The Things I Could Do:" Three Essays On Prosocial Venturing And Financial Resource Acquisition, Koushikee Dutta

Doctoral Dissertations

Prosocial entrepreneurship refers to simultaneously creating profitability and positive impact for others through entrepreneurial venturing. There are many uncertainties regarding how these firms approach financing and resource acquisition. This dissertation addresses mechanisms of financial resource acquisition through three different stages of prosocial venture formation: nascent, early, and growth stage. It is important to understand how these ventures raise capital and what challenges they face in doing so. In commercial capital markets, the key motivation is company profitability and earning an attractive return on investment.

Fewer financial institutions are willing to enter into financial obligations with prosocial entrepreneurial ventures because prosocial …

Understanding The Healthcare Experiences Of Lgbtq+ People: An Adaptation Of The Daily Heterosexist Experiences Questionnaire, Conor Smith

Doctoral Dissertations

LGBTQ+ people's experiences of heterosexism, which are common in the healthcare system, are linked to poor health outcomes. There are no measures of LGBTQ+ people’s experiences in healthcare settings which could be used by healthcare systems and providers to improve the quality of their care for this vulnerable population. The Daily Heterosexist Experiences Questionnaire (DHEQ), developed using the minority stress model, measures the general stressful life experiences of LGBTQ+ people. This project aimed to adapt the DHEQ for use in healthcare settings.

A mixed-methods study was conducted to create the Daily Heterosexist Experiences Questionnaire-Healthcare (DHEQ-H). Semi-structured interviews focused on the …

Indigenous Assessment Developers On Elements Of The Disjuncture-Response Dialectic: A Critical Comparative Case Study, David A. Sul May 2021

Indigenous Assessment Developers On Elements Of The Disjuncture-Response Dialectic: A Critical Comparative Case Study, David A. Sul

Doctoral Dissertations

The disjuncture-response dialectic proposes that the assessment development practices of Indigenous assessment developers exist within a broader environment where attention to broader themes such as settler colonialism (Wolfe, 2006) and Indigenous sovereignty is incorporated. To understand this dialectic, this study sought insight from Indigenous assessment developers about the issues they face when developing culturally specific assessments for use within their environments and settings.

This study used a critical (Giroux, 1979; Horkheimer, 2018; McKenzie, 2012) comparative case study approach (Bartlett & Vavrus, 2017b) with a convenience sample of three Indigenous assessment developers representing a cross-section of culturally specific assessment development projects …

The scope of this work spans two main areas of autonomy research 1) autonomous path planning and 2) test and evaluation of autonomous systems. Path planning is an integral part of autonomous decision-making, and a deep understanding in this area provides valuable perspective on approaching the problem of how to effectively evaluate vehicle behavior.

Autonomous decision-making capabilities must include reliability, robustness, and trustworthiness in a real-world environment. A major component of robot decision-making lies in intelligent path-planning. Serving as the brains of an autonomous system, an efficient and reliable path planner is crucial to mission success and overall safety. A …

Discourses Of Diversity: A Qualitative Case Study Of World Language Pedagogies Through An Intersectional Lens, Sheri Dion May 2021

Discourses Of Diversity: A Qualitative Case Study Of World Language Pedagogies Through An Intersectional Lens, Sheri Dion

Doctoral Dissertations

Schools are becoming more linguistically and racially diverse in K-12 settings, yet there is relatively little research that explores how language teachers incorporate student and community diversities in their pedagogies. Situated at one, northeastern public secondary school in the United States, this research offers a qualitative case study of language pedagogies through an intersectional lens to investigate the mechanisms and contexts through which inequities arise. Data is collected from the following sources: teacher interviews, classroom observations, teachers’ syllabi, and student de-identified work. This study employs intersectionality (Collins & Bilge, 2016; Crenshaw, 1989, 2010) as a primary theoretical lens and critical …

Broadly-Based Graduate School Sponsored Communication Skills Programs: A Study In Three Essays Of Programs And Perceptions Of The Diversification Of Career Pathways, Jovana Milosavljevic Ardeljan

Doctoral Dissertations

It has been asserted that communication skills play a critical role in success in a job (What is technical writing?, n.d.). Traditional graduate training prepares students for communication within their field of study; however, it often fails to provide skill development opportunities needed for addressing more general audiences (Coleman, 2018). This research focuses on broadly-based oral and written communication programs which help graduate students to learn to write and orally communicate more effectively to different audiences for different purposes, in and outside of academia, enabling them to explain clearly what they do and why it matters.Using archival analysis and interviews, …

Perceived Obstacles By Esl Instructors And Required Support For The Integration Of Educational Technology, Xiaotian Zhang

Doctoral Dissertations

Nowadays, the use of technology has become a significant part of the language learning process inside and outside of the classroom. Many previous studies and surveys, most language educators hold a relatively positive attitude to the usage of technology in language teaching and learning. But many other studies also found that language teachers were not really using technology in their classrooms, or only for very low-level learning and teaching. The integration of technology in second language learning and teaching is still a problem that has not been fully researched. This descriptive study was designed to explore the obstacles that prevent ESL …

Exploring The Lived Experiences Of Middle-Eastern And North African (Mena) Jews Through Narrative Inquiry Using A Digital Storytelling Approach, Brandy B. Shufutinsky Apr 2021

Exploring The Lived Experiences Of Middle-Eastern And North African (Mena) Jews Through Narrative Inquiry Using A Digital Storytelling Approach, Brandy B. Shufutinsky

Doctoral Dissertations

Cultural erasure has led to the virtual erasure of many communities from learning spaces. Discrimination, ignorance, and the politicization of knowledge production are all factors that lead to marginalization that sees certain communities being excluded from academia. One such community are the Jewish communities from Middle-Eastern and North African (MENA) lands. This dissertation directly confronts the erasure of MENA Jewish communities and the knowledge they hold by providing a platform for members of these communities to share their experiences. Storytelling is one way to combat cultural and historical erasure (Iseke, 2013). Not only does storytelling provide a way to resist …

Becoming Scientists: Undergraduate Students' Literacy Activities In Laboratory Education, Allison Giannotti Jan 2021

Becoming Scientists: Undergraduate Students' Literacy Activities In Laboratory Education, Allison Giannotti

Doctoral Dissertations

In laboratory courses across universities, undergraduate students are learning to act, think, and write like professional scientists. Yet, despite the centrality of language and literacy in laboratory experiments, the process of becoming scientifically literate remains ambiguous. Thus, my dissertation examines how university laboratory courses foster undergraduate students’ emergence as literate professionals and competent communicators in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) fields. In particular, it examines undergraduate students’ literate practices, how they change over time, and how they are affected by material and experimental processes in three sequenced, chemistry laboratory courses. Through laboratory observations and interviews with undergraduate students, faculty, …

Implementing Socially Just Climate Adaptation: A Case Study Of Boston, Massachusetts, Jeffrey Thomas Malloy Jan 2021

Implementing Socially Just Climate Adaptation: A Case Study Of Boston, Massachusetts, Jeffrey Thomas Malloy

Doctoral Dissertations

The urgency to adapt to climate change presents important questions about who stands to benefit from these efforts. The previous two decades of scholarship devoted to social justice in climate adaptation has established an important theoretical basis to evaluate these questions. Less understood however, is how and under what conditions climate adaptation policy implementation promotes or inhibits justice for socially vulnerable populations. This work draws upon the disciplines of urban climate change governance, climate adaptation, urban planning, social justice theory, and policy implementation, to evaluate ongoing climate adaptation policy initiatives in Boston, Massachusetts. Through a case study approach, this dissertation …

The Ideal International Student: Intersections Of Race, Gender, And Accent In International Multilingual Student Identity, Kristin Raymond Jan 2021

The Ideal International Student: Intersections Of Race, Gender, And Accent In International Multilingual Student Identity, Kristin Raymond

Doctoral Dissertations

Perceptions of international multilingual students from the university community have a significant impact on those students’ identities and status on campus. These perceptions construct narratives of the ideal international multilingual student, which is defined by an optimal set of student characteristics that appear to be divorced from factors of race, gender, and accent. This dissertation examines the concept of the ideal international multilingual student in intersection with factors of race, gender, and accent. This qualitative, IRB-approved study draws from the model of investment (Norton 2000, 2013; Darvin & Norton, 2015; De Costa & Norton, 2017) and the concept of racialization …

Equity In Language Programs: Revitalizing Indigenous Languages In Secondary School In Anchorage, Alaska, Betsy Watson (Paskvan)

Doctoral Dissertations

"Wherever there is a situation of domination and subordination between any two groups, whatever their color or religion, this will be reflected in the language relationship: one language dominating the other." —wa Thiong’o (2011, p. 244) Indigenous language and culture education efforts in Anchorage, Alaska are limited by omissions in the public school curriculum. One of the many reasons for this is that policy makers believe there is not sufficient demand for Alaska Native languages in public schools. Further there is a perceived lack of language teacher-leaders and experts to build programs for Alaska Native language instruction. This study used …

Dysconscious Racism And Racial Microaggressions In The Public School System, Ryan Lee Jan 2021

Dysconscious Racism And Racial Microaggressions In The Public School System, Ryan Lee

Doctoral Dissertations

Dysconscious racism and racial microaggressions are two forms of racism that exist in public schools today. Dysconscious racism is a form of racism that “tacitly accepts the dominant White norms and privileges” in a given environment while racial microaggressions are brief and commonplace indignations to the target person or group whether it was intentional or unintentional (Sue et al., 2009). Teachers of color face these subtllte forms of racism within their own workplaces. The researcher conducted a qualitative study by interviewing six public school K-6 teachers of color of different ethnicities who teach in various school districts across the South …

A Critical Feminist Case Study Of The Northern California Cherry Blossom Queen Program, Alison Kepola Nishiyama-Young

Doctoral Dissertations

Asian American women are chronically underrepresented in leadership positions in almost every sector including higher education, government, private, and non-profit (Youngberg et al., n.d.). Many researchers have suggested the need for more leadership development programs specifically designed to support the needs of Asian American women (Akutagawa, 2014; Canlas, 2016; Gee & Peck, 2015; Lin, 2007; Youngberg et al., n.d.). Though there are a number of leadership programs geared towards Asian Americans, there are very few that cater to Asian American women explicitly. Historically, cultural pageant programs in the Asian American community have played this role and one such program is …
