Knowing Me, Knowing You: The Role Of Personal Intelligence In Romantic Relationship Conflict Communication, Victoria Bryan Sep 2023

Knowing Me, Knowing You: The Role Of Personal Intelligence In Romantic Relationship Conflict Communication, Victoria Bryan

Doctoral Dissertations

People bring to their relationships a variety of personality traits that guide their interactions with others. However, an individual’s unique set of needs, preferences and skills can make conflict a near-inevitable part of most relationships. Personal intelligence is a promising new construct with implications for how couples communicate during conflict. Named in parallel with spatial, social, and similar intelligences, personal intelligence involves the ability to reason about the personality of oneself and others. People high in personal intelligence show an increased capacity to recognize the motives that guide other’s behavior, which they use to adjust how they approach their interpersonal …

Working With Other Immigrants Brings The Parts That I Lost Back To Me: The Experiences Of Latin American Immigrant Therapists Working With Latin American Immigrant Populations, Elizabeth P. Rivera Aug 2023

Working With Other Immigrants Brings The Parts That I Lost Back To Me: The Experiences Of Latin American Immigrant Therapists Working With Latin American Immigrant Populations, Elizabeth P. Rivera

Doctoral Dissertations

Therapists who work with traumatized populations are vulnerable to experiencing trauma indirectly. This experience may be exacerbated for those who have experienced trauma themselves. As LatAm immigrant populations have often experienced trauma at the various migration phases, therapists who are LatAm immigrants and work with LatAm immigrant clients may also experience secondary traumatization as an inherent part of their work. While the research on secondary trauma spans decades, there is a dearth of literature on the experiences of LatAm immigrant therapists specifically. This qualitative dissertation study begins the conversation of what the lived experiences of LatAm immigrant therapists are via …

The Perceived Impact Of The Use Of African American Vernacular English In A Sales Situation, Cameron Sumlin May 2023

The Perceived Impact Of The Use Of African American Vernacular English In A Sales Situation, Cameron Sumlin

Doctoral Dissertations

According to William Raspberry “Good English, well-spoken and written, will open more doors than a college degree. Bad English will slam doors you didn’t even know existed.” This dissertation examines the use of Standard American English (SAE) vis-à-vis African American Vernacular English (AAVE) in a sales situation. This dissertation is grounded in the Stereotype Content Model (SCM) and its two dimensions, warmth and competence. This research reveals the perceived influence that a particular dialect has on stereotype activation, through warmth and competence in a personal selling situation. This study extends marketing and sales literature by specifically focusing on AAVE vis-à-vis …

Domestic Shakespeares In The Antebellum United States, Daniel G. Lauby May 2023

Domestic Shakespeares In The Antebellum United States, Daniel G. Lauby

Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation examines how early nineteenth-century female novelists developed a new mode of adapting Shakespeare, what I am calling “domestic Shakespeares,” that cite, reference, and rearrange plays based on women’s experiences in and of the home. I focus on popular women authors whose novels appeared between 1827 and 1862, a time when identity was especially apparent in the geographical formation of the United States. These women novelists used allusions to and adaptations of Shakespeare in their works to express their frustrations with conventional paradigms of womanhood and related disciplinary systems, such as coverture, that limited women’s citizenship. “Domestic Shakespeares,” I …

Narrative Insight Into How Rural, First-Generation College Students And Their Families Establish Non-Deficit, Multi-Sited Identities, Sarah Jusseaume

Doctoral Dissertations

This study explores the ways in which rural, first-generation college (RFGC) students position themselves in relation to dominant cultural master narratives and potentially competing alternative narratives related to community and family processes, norms, life pathways, and choices after college. Evidence is drawn from in-depth narrative interviews with 15 RFGC students conducted both at school and in students’ home communities. The study contributes to an anti-deficit understanding of rural first-generation college students’ college experiences and identity by focusing not on challenges and barriers but on the ways individuals both align and agentically reject dominant cultural narratives as well as the ways …

Studying Us Iranian Immigrant Parents Negotiating Movements Toward Future Belonging, Fatemeh Hajnaghizadeh Jan 2023

Studying Us Iranian Immigrant Parents Negotiating Movements Toward Future Belonging, Fatemeh Hajnaghizadeh

Doctoral Dissertations

In this dissertation, I reflect on how my work with Iranian immigrant parents in the US is informed by my lived experiences and research as a member of the minoritized group both in post-revolutionary Iran and the US. I recognize these experiences as informing my research on diasporic parenting throughout different stages, from designing the methodology to curating the theoretical framework and analyzing data. The desire to engage with minoritized ways of being and knowing beyond static essentializing viewpoints informs my approach to designing methodological processes that centralize confusion/disagreements with dominant practices and ideologies. In my study’s methodology, I use stories …

A Qualitative Study Identifying Perspectives, Experiences, And Needs Of School Principals And Teachers To Lead A Culture Of Differentiated Teaching And Learning, Natalie Gray Pope

Doctoral Dissertations

Differentiated instruction is defined as providing all students access to the same set of curricula while at the same time providing tasks and instruction tailored to a student’s specific learning style. This expectation has led researchers to study and understand differentiated instruction for embedded applications across all classroom and district experiences, public perceptions, and effective implementation of future trends. However, there is a gap in literature addressed by this study relating to the leadership of differentiated instruction in school settings.

Data for this study were collected from school principals and classroom teachers using both virtual and face-to-face interviews, documented field …

A Memory-Based Approach To Multiple Document Comprehension, Allison Sonia-Bolduc May 2022

A Memory-Based Approach To Multiple Document Comprehension, Allison Sonia-Bolduc

Doctoral Dissertations

Multiple document (MD) comprehension is of growing interest in the Internet age, in which reading material is readily available from multiple sources. However, comprehension research has typically been dominated by studies investigating single documents (Bråten et al., 2019; McNamara & Magliano, 2009). This dissertation applies a memory-based approach traditionally used in research on single document comprehension to a MD context, with the goal of understanding the on-line processing and integration of information from multiple documents. Expository-style passages were created in which the first half contained information that was either consistent or inconsistent with a target sentence in the second half. …

Othered Ambitions: The Conflation Of Villainy And Homosexuality In 20th Century American Media, Sherard Harrington May 2022

Othered Ambitions: The Conflation Of Villainy And Homosexuality In 20th Century American Media, Sherard Harrington

Doctoral Dissertations

This work sets out to examine the ways in which homosexuality and villainy have been conflated throughout the 20th Century in American media, and the ways in which that conflation has been reinforced and challenged. My observations about the villainous connotations of homosexuality hold despite the ways in which the boundaries of homosexuality have changed throughout the century. A homosexual is anyone who experiences romantic or amorous affection for someone who presents with the same gender presentation and/or who experiences attraction aversion for those who present with the opposite gender presentation. A villain breaks the law seeking to restructure society …

Query-Specific Subtopic Clustering In Response To Broad Queries, Sumanta Kashyapi May 2022

Query-Specific Subtopic Clustering In Response To Broad Queries, Sumanta Kashyapi

Doctoral Dissertations

Information Retrieval (IR) refers to obtaining valuable and relevant information from various sources in response to a specific information need. For the textual domain, the most common form of information sources is a collection of textual documents or text corpus. Depending on the scope of the information need, also referred to as the query, the relevant information can span a wide range of topical themes. Hence, the relevant information may often be scattered through multiple documents in the corpus, and each satisfies the information need to varying degrees. Traditional IR systems present the relevant set of documents in the form …

The Efficacy Of Response To Intervention On Academic Outcomes At The Secondary School Level In A New England School District, Kimberly Mcglinchey May 2022

The Efficacy Of Response To Intervention On Academic Outcomes At The Secondary School Level In A New England School District, Kimberly Mcglinchey

Doctoral Dissertations

Educational policies and practices have had a long-standing emphasis of conducting incoming literacy screenings to determine who is at risk for school failure. Response to intervention (RTI) is an intervention program designed to deliver educational resources to students who fall below what is deemed an acceptable level of proficiency as viewed through the early screening process. The goal of the program is to provide early mitigation in order to catch students up to their peers, and to limit misidentification into special education. Studies have evaluated the success of the program in grades K-3 and shown mixed success. However, there was …

Epileptogenic Focus Localization By Novel Analysis Of Lntracranial Eeg In The Frequency Domain, Omar Ali Alamoudi Feb 2022

Epileptogenic Focus Localization By Novel Analysis Of Lntracranial Eeg In The Frequency Domain, Omar Ali Alamoudi

Doctoral Dissertations

The gold standard for localization of the epileptogenic zone (EZ) continues to be the visual inspection of electrographic changes during seizure onset by experienced EEG readers. Development of an epileptogenic focus localization tool that can accurately delineate the EZ from the analysis of interictal (seizure-free) period is still an open question of great significance for improved diagnosis (e.g., presurgical evaluation) and treatment (e.g., surgical) outcome. We developed an EZ localization algorithm (LA) based on novel analysis of the power in a narrow frequency band of the recorded signals from the brain, that is, using a simple univariate periodogram-type power measure, …

First-Year Students And Writing Support: Learning From Student Choices, Alicia Clark-Barnes Jan 2022

First-Year Students And Writing Support: Learning From Student Choices, Alicia Clark-Barnes

Doctoral Dissertations

In 2022, COVID-19 has disrupted the academic experience of students, including students access to writing support. The importance of the support universities offer and that students are able to access has greatly increased as offerings and circumstances shift and change. Students seeking support may turn to university-sponsored services but if those do not fit student needs, students may rely on informal supports, including friends and family. While investigating the gaps in university-sponsored writing support first-year students experience, I explore how first-year students understand what writing support is, how available/accessible it is to them, and why students return to a form …

Answering Topical Information Needs Using Neural Entity-Oriented Information Retrieval And Extraction, Shubham Chatterjee Jan 2022

Answering Topical Information Needs Using Neural Entity-Oriented Information Retrieval And Extraction, Shubham Chatterjee

Doctoral Dissertations

In the modern world, search engines are an integral part of human lives. The field of Information Retrieval (IR) is concerned with finding material (usually documents) of an unstructured nature (usually text) that satisfies an information need (query) from within large collections (usually stored on computers). The search engine then displays a ranked list of results relevant to our query. Traditional document retrieval algorithms match a query to a document using the overlap of words in both. However, the last decade has seen the focus shifting to leveraging the rich semantic information available in the form of entities. Entities are …

Narratives Of Becoming: Conceptualization Of Teacher Identity Through The Experiences Of Educators From Racially, Linguistically, And Culturally Minoritized Backgrounds, Sumeyra Gok Gulmezoglu

Doctoral Dissertations

Teacher education programs are predominantly White spaces with their faculty, teacher candidates, curriculum, and practices. In these spaces, the experiences of teacher candidates from minoritized backgrounds can be alienating and their voices can be overlooked or silenced. In three interrelated but distinct studies, this research aims to highlight the experiences and perspectives of educators from minoritized racial, ethnic, and linguistic backgrounds as they are conceptualizing their professional identities as educators. These three studies are narratives of becoming as they explore conceptualization of teacher identity through three different narrative methods namely autoethnography, counterstories, and narrative inquiry. Although each study has its …

The Relationship Between Metacognitive Strategies And Listening Comprehension Proficiency In Intensive-Korean-Foreign-Language Setting, Gumok Seo

Doctoral Dissertations

The study investigated the relationship between a metacognitive-listening strategy and listening proficiency and gained insights into students’ perceptions of listening-strategy use among Korean-as-a-foreign-language learners in an intensive-language setting in Northern California. Little research has been carried out in a Korean-as-a-foreign-language (KFL) setting, and investigation in a different context of an intensive-language program is needed where good study habits, such as metacognitive strategy, self-regulation, and autonomous learning are required. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the relationship between metacognitive-listening-strategy use and listening proficiency outcomes by more- and less-proficient students among KFL adult learners and their perception of metacognitive-listening-strategies.

To achieve the …

An Exploration Of Learning-At-Home Experiences Among Families And Children Of Color Labeled With Disabilities During Covid-19: A Narrative Inquiry, Nam Ju Han

Doctoral Dissertations

We are living in this historical moment of a COVID-19 global crisis that is continuing to impact marginalized families in our very own communities. Students of color, especially those who are already on the margins, and experience inequities in the classroom and in the community, have been further impacted by the quarantine as the educational system had not prioritized how to support students who face certain vulnerabilities due to lack of government funding, the historical oppressive tendency for schools to function within a medical model of standardization, along with the commodification of learning. Given the novelty of COVID-19 research, the …

Fifty Years Of Underrepresented Student Advocacy At One Jesuit Secondary School, Sonya Cotero Arriola Jan 2022

Fifty Years Of Underrepresented Student Advocacy At One Jesuit Secondary School, Sonya Cotero Arriola

Doctoral Dissertations

Across the United States Conference, Catholic and Jesuit secondary schools are experiencing tremendous change in their student demographics. Schools of today are being challenged to consider what true inclusion looks like within their community vis-à-vis students whose racial, economic, sexual and gender identities do not fit the traditional Catholic or Jesuit school mold. The racial and social order of the United States is replicated within Catholic and Jesuit schools, even when those same communities claim to promote values of inclusion and opportunity. History offers valuable insights to school communities grappling with these questions.

This qualitative study centers the efforts of …

¿Tú Qué Sabes?: Latina Doctoral Women Disrupting And Resisting Dominant Knowledge, Sendy Ramos Madsen Jan 2022

¿Tú Qué Sabes?: Latina Doctoral Women Disrupting And Resisting Dominant Knowledge, Sendy Ramos Madsen

Doctoral Dissertations

Education environments have systematically excluded, silenced, and erroneously spoken on behalf of Women of Color. Linear forms of scholarship and research practices propagate the dominant perspective and fail to address systems of oppression that result in epistemic suppression and academic hostility towards brown minds. Historically, Latina women have not been seen as creators of knowledge, and their access to educational spaces has been restricted. According to census projections, in 2036, Latinas/os will account for the largest minority group in the United States and one-third of the American educational system. Therefore, academic spaces must establish practices to include Latina women as …
