The Far East Agreements Of The Yalta Conference Of February 4-11, 1945, And The Sino-Soviet Agreements Of August, 1945, Robert Harold Davidson Jr.

Dissertations and Theses

This paper will present a study of the Far East Agreements of the Yalta Conference, held from February 4-11, 1945, and will trace them through to their conclusion in the agreements signed by the Soviet Union and Nationalist China in August of the same year. These wartime agreements between the Soviet Union and the United States, subscribed to by Great Britain and later Nationalist China, reflected then existing distributions of power. The Far East Agreements, on the part of the United States, were concluded in the national self-interest of the United States for reasons thought necessary at the time.

Measuring Trainee Comprehension Of Casework Relationship In A Public Welfare Orientation Program, Margaret Berweger

Dissertations and Theses

This study was undertaken as a first step in measuring effectiveness of the Oregon State Public Welfare Orientation Center program in teaching principles of the casework relationship as conceptualized by Felix P. Biestek. This anticipated the development of a reasonably reliable instrument, improvement and validation of which would be undertaken in a subsequent study.

The population tested was made up of male and female college graduates, newly hired by the State, who were then entering a four week orientation program for caseworkers. Their education and experience varied, but all had passed the State Civil Service examination for this position.

The Attack On Bourgeois Society: An Introduction To Cultural Despair In The Late Nineteenth And Twentieth Century European Thought, With Four Illustrative Studies From Traditions Of The European Intellectual Milieu, Craig Evan Wollner Apr 1969

The Attack On Bourgeois Society: An Introduction To Cultural Despair In The Late Nineteenth And Twentieth Century European Thought, With Four Illustrative Studies From Traditions Of The European Intellectual Milieu, Craig Evan Wollner

Dissertations and Theses

The rise of the middle class to power and influence in European culture and politics in the nineteenth century created the conditions of modern life which to many European intellectuals were distasteful and ominous. They viewed urbanization, commercialization, industrialization and the qualities of life that they engendered, such as anxiety, limitation of freedom, and pervasive mediocrity in cultural expression, as being inimical to the traditional and more reliable values of European civilization or, in some instances, as being incapable of providing the bases for a free and humane existence.

This study focuses on the attack on bourgeois society in Europe …

The purpose of the present study is to provide a limited standardization of the "Children's speechreading Test" on normal hearing children. Although Dr. Butt indicates some relation of her test to intelligence, no attempt was made in this pilot study to correlate mental …

An Analysis And Evaluation Of The American Electoral College, Norma N. Williams Oct 1968

An Analysis And Evaluation Of The American Electoral College, Norma N. Williams

Dissertations and Theses

The Constitutional Convention of 1787 was greatly divided over the question of how to select the new nation's chief executive. The method finally adopted was a compromise between direct election and election by the national legislature and provided that individual states, as they saw fit, choose electors equal to the total number of Senators and Representatives. From the beginning, most of delegates considered the proposal awkward and irrational almost to the point of absurdity, but as they argued about it, they became convinced that it was then the only plan which could overcome the objections raised by other methods.

Applications Of Modified Wittig Reaction To Butatriene Synthesis, John Pearson Oct 1968

Applications Of Modified Wittig Reaction To Butatriene Synthesis, John Pearson

Dissertations and Theses

The preparation of allenes by the condensation of an acyl chloride with a phosphonium ylid and subsequent elimination of an acid salt and a phosphonium oxide has been established by Bestmann and Hartung. It was felt that this process could be expanded to include the synthesis of butatrienes. Butatrienes are stabilized by aromatic substituents while aromatic substituents decrease the nucleophilicity and reactivity of the phosphonium ylids to be used in the synthesis of the butatrienes. The ylids employed were carbomethoxyphenylmethylenetriphenyl phosphorane, and a new compound, carbethoxyphenylmethylenetriphenyl phosphorane, both of which failed to form alkylated condensation products. Both ylids were prepared …

The Electronic Instrumentation For Atmospheric Laser Propagation Studies, Clyde Manford Brown Jr. Aug 1968

The Electronic Instrumentation For Atmospheric Laser Propagation Studies, Clyde Manford Brown Jr.

Dissertations and Theses

The use of laser radiation in atmospheric communication systems is revealing new forms of signal degradation not previously encountered with lower frequency transmitting sources. The coherence and directivity of the laser which is responsible for its increased signal capacity is degraded by the effect of atmospheric distortion. Random fluctuations in the index of refraction (turbulence), Rayleigh scattering, aerosol scattering and other atmospheric effects create fluctuations (boiling, breathing, dancing, attenuation, transit-time dispersion, etc.) within the beam cross section, which when received produce random fluctuations in the receiver output signal. The two systems which are described, are designed to investigate the effect …

Solving Random Walk Problems Using Resistive Analogues, Richard D. Morris Aug 1968

Solving Random Walk Problems Using Resistive Analogues, Richard D. Morris

Dissertations and Theses

The classical method of solving random walk problems involves using Markov chain theory. When the particular random walk of interest is written in matrix form using Markov chain theory, the problem must then be solved using a digital computer. To solve all but the most trivial random walk problems by hand would be extremely difficult and time consuming. Very large random walk problems may even prove difficult to solve on the smaller digital computers. This paper intends to demonstrate a method that may be used to solve large random walk problems in a quick and economical manner. This alternate method …

At the age of forty-three, after becoming an eminent poet and a well-known decorative design artist, he began to devote most of the last twenty years of his life to generating an interest in the better community. First, he worked with people of the upper and middle classes, then he turned his attention to the working men. I divide the analysis and evaluation of this work of William Morris …

Classes And Class Conflicts In Victorian England As Explored By Thomas Hardy, Nancy Burns Vail Jul 1968

Classes And Class Conflicts In Victorian England As Explored By Thomas Hardy, Nancy Burns Vail

Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this research was to study in depth the relationships of individuals in the three social classes in England during the Victorian Age. Since original documents and research material were scarce I used two novels by Thomas Hardy to illustrate the conflicts between representatives of the social classes. In 1891 England was prosperous and many people believed there was no conflict between the classes. Thomas Hardy believed this was untrue and, by method of comparison, wrote Tess of the d’Urbervilles and Jude the Obscure to prove his point. This thesis includes research on the two novels, Thomas Hardy’s …

The Library Board And The Conscientious Objector: A Study In War Hysteria, Annette Martha Bartholomae

Dissertations and Theses

The Selective Service Act of 1917 made provision for the exemption of conscientious objectors belonging to certain religious bodies. It did not provide protection for the sincere individual objector against vilification from a public who labeled him disloyal, unpatriotic, and pro-Hun.

This report is based on an incident which occurred in Portland, Oregon. It involves the assistant librarian of the Library Association of Portland who was a conscientious objector, and the repercussions which her stand had on the library board, the head librarian, and the public in general.

In April of 1918, Portland had just completed a successful drive for …

Leisure, Condition Of Man's Freedom, Gerald H. Conrath May 1968

Leisure, Condition Of Man's Freedom, Gerald H. Conrath

Dissertations and Theses

Leisure is defined as a mode of human existence in which the individual is subjectively engaged in the pursuit of an activity solely for the inherent qualities in the activity. This concept, derived from the writings of Aristotle, is in direct conflict with the popularly held assumption that leisure is parcelled out and measured in quantities of time. Leisure is dependent upon the existence in a human life of time free from work, but free time, or "leisure time," is by no means the same as leisure.

The attitudes appropriate to leisure, as described in the study are spontaneity, solitude, …

A Clarification And Evaluation Of Black Power, Beverly Jo Olson May 1968

A Clarification And Evaluation Of Black Power, Beverly Jo Olson

Dissertations and Theses

Black Americans have entered a new phase in the Civil Rights Movement. First they struggled for their legal rights. Then they struggled for equality, which meant integration and implementation of their legal rights. Now they struggle for power--"black power".

"Black power" is a metaphor which became part of the English language less than two years ago. Because of its newness, it has not been clearly defined nor its purposes clarified and evaluated. This paper is A Clarification and Evaluation of Black Power.

Black power serves as a rallying call for unity and self-help among black people. But the words are …

Arturo Alessandri And The Chilean Presidential Elections Of 1920: A Thesis, Sally Ann Jones May 1968

Arturo Alessandri And The Chilean Presidential Elections Of 1920: A Thesis, Sally Ann Jones

Dissertations and Theses

After rising to a position of political and economic importance among the Latin American republics of the nineteenth century, Chile lost that leadership in the early 1900's, much to the consternation of her leading statesmen and intellectuals. The economic dislocation following World War I exacerbated the already serious social conditions, while at the same the traditionally passive lower classes started to demand a voice in the management of their own affairs. The existing governmental system had proved itself powerless to solve the pressing problems facing the country at every turn. Chile desperately needed new leadership; the time was perfect for …

Degradation products of methyl dehydroabietate have been obtained by manually extracting the cell-free supernatant solution of a liquid growth medium with methylene chloride. Gas chromatography (G. L. C.) was used for separation of the neutral products. The acid products were converted to their methyl esters diazomethane and then separated by gas chromatography. Structures have been proposed for two G. L. C. fractions (V, II) on the basis of infrared (I.R.) and mass spectral (M. S.) data. …

Child Care Arrangements In Affluence And Poverty, Josephine Jeannette Gurrola May 1968

Child Care Arrangements In Affluence And Poverty, Josephine Jeannette Gurrola

Dissertations and Theses

A study of the attitudes of 40 mothers toward their child care arrangements tested hypotheses concerning the conditions of economic and child care necessity under which mothers of two socio-economic groups would be satisfied with their arrangements. It was hypothesized that the satisfaction with an arrangement would be associated inversely with economic necessity and child care necessity. A prediction was also made that the mothers' expressive satisfactions with the child care arrangements (benefits to the child and relationship to the sitter) would only be realized after the instrumental necessities of convenience and dependability of the arrangement were met.
