Verbal Accessibility Between Marital Partners As Studied In A Court Of Domestic Relations, Patricia Walker May 1968

Verbal Accessibility Between Marital Partners As Studied In A Court Of Domestic Relations, Patricia Walker

Dissertations and Theses

This study investigated the concept of verbal accessibility in marriage. It is an example of the interactional approach to the study of marriage, which is concerned with the on-going socialization process in marriage. Verbal communication is one component of the socialization process and also of problem solving in marriage.

Interpersonal communication is influenced by many variables--personality, culture and social situation. Polansky (1965) conceptualized verbal accessibility as the degree of readiness to communicate verbally and to participate in communication about determinant attitudes. Determinant attitudes are those which have the most far reaching influence on other attitudes and on behavior.

Intaglio Printmaking In The Secondary School, James Lester Wylder May 1968

Intaglio Printmaking In The Secondary School, James Lester Wylder

Dissertations and Theses

There is a wealth of printed material on intaglio printmaking techniques and history, but there is relatively little printed material or work directed towards the inclusion of intaglio printmaking in the secondary school art curriculum. It is my basic assertion in this thesis that intaglio printmaking can be taught with success at the secondary level.

The thesis consists of three chapters. The first chapter is concerned with the purpose, value, and application of intaglio printmaking in a secondary school art program. The second chapter identifies the materials, the cost of materials, and the sources of supply. Chapter three deals with …

The Development Of A Clay Body With Compatible Glaze Formulae, Nancy Travers May 1968

The Development Of A Clay Body With Compatible Glaze Formulae, Nancy Travers

Dissertations and Theses

There are two aims in this thesis: the first is to ascertain something of the physical and chemical properties of clay and glazes and how to handle and control them. A project such as the development of a clay body and glaze formulae serves to isolate the various functions of the materials and give a clear understanding as to their use and potentials. This enables one to visualize and manipulate materials creatively with a reliable prediction as to their behavior. Spencer Moseley in Art Education supports this, saying: "The quality of a man’s production depends upon (1) the idea, the …

Theoretical Calculations Of Kinetic Isotope Effects, Paul Chien-Wei Chang May 1968

Theoretical Calculations Of Kinetic Isotope Effects, Paul Chien-Wei Chang

Dissertations and Theses

Treating the activated complex for unimolecular dissociation as uncoupled fragments simplifies the calculation of transition-state frequencies in the quasi-equilibrium-theory formulation of an isotopic rate-constant ratio. The general method is applied to the specific case of the intramolecular kinetic isotope effect in decarboxylation of malonic acid. The fragment models are further simplified by means of the “cut-off” approximation of Sterm and Wolfsberg. These model calculations are in agreement with the presently available experimental results. Applicability to reactions involving simultaneous multiple bond rupture or formation is noted.

A Comparison Of Characteristics Of Terminated Afdc Cases With Cases Remaining Active From The June 1966 Afdc Load In Linn County, Oregon, William Everett Lowther

Dissertations and Theses

A study of the characteristics of AFDC cases active in Linn County, Oregon in June 1966 and of the difference in characteristics between those cases closed by September 1, 1967, and those cases remaining active on that date. The source of data was the case records of the Linn County Department of Public Welfare. There were 212 cases in the study with 200 suitable for full analysis.

The purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis that there is a difference in selected characteristics between cases remaining active and cases that close. Case records were read and then characteristics …

Traits Associated With Choosing Social Work As A Career, Helen Ellsworth Apr 1968

Traits Associated With Choosing Social Work As A Career, Helen Ellsworth

Dissertations and Theses

This was a study of traits associated with the choice of social work as a career. Two samples of people from the metropolitan area of Portland, Oregon, who had shown an interest in social work, were studied, together with the factors that influenced this interest. The traits and factors considered were substantially those examined by Arnulf M. Pins in Who Chooses Social Work, When and Why?

Traits measured by the Pins study of individuals who had gone on to graduate education in social work were held indicative of individuals most likely to become professional social workers. The Pins' questionnaire was …

A Series Of Paintings, Both Oriental And Western, Oriented Toward A Combination Of The Western And Oriental Styles In The Use Of Mixed Media, Young Hie Shin Apr 1968

A Series Of Paintings, Both Oriental And Western, Oriented Toward A Combination Of The Western And Oriental Styles In The Use Of Mixed Media, Young Hie Shin

Dissertations and Theses

After studying both Oriental and Western paintings, I became interested in many different approaches involving composition, color harmony, design, texture, and form. It was my main purpose to explore various painting media by means of combining materials, techniques, and processes used in the Western and Oriental paintings. The source of my paintings is the sum total of my experience in both Oriental and Western paintings. Most of the Oriental paintings were either sketched or painted out of my imagination. They are clear realism in the Oriental sense of the work. Most of my Western paintings are either abstract or semi-abstract. …

The Ion-Exchange Chromatographic Separation Of The Components Of The Product Mixture Resulting From Reaction Of Trans-Dichlorobis (Ethylenediamine) Cobalt (Iii) Chloride With Thiocyanate Ion, William Trew Jordan Aug 1967

The Ion-Exchange Chromatographic Separation Of The Components Of The Product Mixture Resulting From Reaction Of Trans-Dichlorobis (Ethylenediamine) Cobalt (Iii) Chloride With Thiocyanate Ion, William Trew Jordan

Dissertations and Theses

The object of the research was to study, by means of ion-exchange chromatography, the product mixture resulting from reaction of trans-[Co(en)2Cl2]Cl and SCN-. Cis-and trans-[Co(en)2(NCS)Cl]Cl had previously been obtained as products of this reaction. However, the possibility of the presence of other products consistent with the nature of the reactants could not be dismissed. These include the dichlora, dithiocyanato, and aqua complexes.

The constituents of the solution resulting from the reaction were separated on a column of Dowex 50W-X8 resin by elution with hydrochloric acid. The eluted fractions were evaporated at room …

Landscape And Figure Composition In Relation To Space, Color, And Line, Perry Theo Carandanis Aug 1967

Landscape And Figure Composition In Relation To Space, Color, And Line, Perry Theo Carandanis

Dissertations and Theses

The thesis is an empirical analysis of eight paintings in which the problems to be examined are the relationships of the expressive visual elements of composition with the subject matter. An attempt will be made to examine some specific problems encountered with individual works, which will include emotional involvement as well as aesthetic, and arrive at some generalizations. The paintings selected to comprise this thesis are four figure compositions and three landscapes. The medium used to execute the paintings is Acrylic-Polymer, a Hyplar Product, and they are painted on Upsom Board, for which considerations are given.

The Image Of The Habsburg Empire In Joseph Roth's Radetzkymarsch And Die Kapuzinergruft, Deborah O'Dell Jul 1967

The Image Of The Habsburg Empire In Joseph Roth's Radetzkymarsch And Die Kapuzinergruft, Deborah O'Dell

Dissertations and Theses

This thesis explores Joseph Roth's image of the Habsburg Empire es depicted in two of his works, namely Radetzkymarsch (1932) and Die Kapuzinergruft (1938).

Joseph Roth is perhaps the chronicler par excellence of the Habsburg Empire. Among the authors who have attempted, through their works, to come to grips with fin de siecle Austria, he has remained relatively unknown. However, Roth was keenly aware of the Monarchy's ultimate decline and fall. Losing the Monarchy was his most intense experience and his personal involvement with the Empire plays a dominant role in these novels. Hence, Chapter I provides a biographical sketch. …

Aspects Of The City; A Group Of Paintings In Varied Media, Based On The Theme Of The City And River Front, Frances Evelyn Kimball Jun 1967

Aspects Of The City; A Group Of Paintings In Varied Media, Based On The Theme Of The City And River Front, Frances Evelyn Kimball

Dissertations and Theses

The main purpose of my work was to explore the properties of various painting media, principally those of synthetic composition and at the same time to explore and extend the color range of my palette in order to reflect attitudes of the theme. The subject was selected because of the unlimited possibilities in composition through the use of the contrasting active and quiet aspects of the city. The paintings are representational abstracts which I have tried to make function as well-organized compositions without completely destroying the realistic content. Working with a subject-oriented theme makes each painting a new problem and, …

Thermal And Electrical Resistance Of Metal Contacts, Roland E. Ott Jun 1967

Thermal And Electrical Resistance Of Metal Contacts, Roland E. Ott

Dissertations and Theses

In engineering practice it is important to know which factors affect the thermal and electrical resistance of metal contacts. This thesis is to investigate some of these factors such as surface roughness and contact pressure. Thermal electrical contact resistance ratios for metal contacts were calculated from the experimental data. The technical literature was searched, and several papers were found in which either thermal or electrical contact resistance was studied separately. However, none of the papers recorded data for both thermal and electrical resistances for the same samples. The information found in these papers has been used as a background for …

Variations On Two Themes, Florence Lyn Bafus Jun 1967

Variations On Two Themes, Florence Lyn Bafus

Dissertations and Theses

Contained within my thesis is an analysis of my paintings in relation to paintings that are being done in this age and area. Thus, I have discussed the geographic and atmospheric environment which necessarily affects the artist’s work. The paintings which have been chosen to comprise my thesis are two views of the Steel Bridge and four views of an old barrel mill in North Portland. They have been executed in Polymer-Acrylics, a Hy-Plar product. This medium, plus the subject matter, compositional and technical problems are given consideration. Lastly,I have briefly summarized what I believe painting to be.

The Use Of Self-Determination And Confidentiality In Casework And Group Work Practice: An Exploratory Study, George A. Fisher, James M. Hanson, Frances Peterson, Helen Phillips Jun 1967

The Use Of Self-Determination And Confidentiality In Casework And Group Work Practice: An Exploratory Study, George A. Fisher, James M. Hanson, Frances Peterson, Helen Phillips

Dissertations and Theses

This study is the seventh in a series begun in 1957 to relate social work theory to general systems theory. The purpose of this study was to assess, through the judgment of professional social workers, the use of the two concepts, self-determination and confidentiality, in casework and social group work situations. The two concepts were operationalized by construction of five practice principles for each concept. An instrument was developed in which a critical hypothetical situation exemplified each principle for both methods with a forced choice of four actions evidencing the degree of self-determination and confidentiality. Forty randomly selected trained social …

Social Exchange In Private Family Day Care Arrangements, Gerald Wesley Perry May 1967

Social Exchange In Private Family Day Care Arrangements, Gerald Wesley Perry

Dissertations and Theses

A study of social exchange between working mothers and their sitters was based on a sample of terminated family day care arrangements in Portland, Oregon (1966-67). The sample, provided by the Multnomah County Public Welfare Commission and the Day Care Exchange Project of northwest Portland consisted of the arrangements of 27 mothers and 23 sitters.

Review of the literature on family day care revealed a paucity of research on the relationship between mothers and sitters in such arrangements. The purpose of the study was to test the hypothesis that continuity of a family day care arrangement is a function of …

A Scale Of Verbal Accessibility In Marriage, Barbara F. Kresse May 1967

A Scale Of Verbal Accessibility In Marriage, Barbara F. Kresse

Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this project was to develop a tool to clarify one concept of verbal interaction in marriage. This concept, Verbal Accessibility, was developed by Norman Polansky and defined as the degree of readiness of the individual to communicate verbally and to participate in communication about his determinant attitudes. Verbal Accessibility is dependent on two variables: l) the enduring characteristics of the individual, and 2) the release of inhibiting factors in a given situation.

In order to facilitate the use of this concept in treatment, a scale was needed to measure Verbal Accessibility of both the person and of …

The Emergence Of The Large Lumber Producers And Their Significance To The Lumber Industry, Kaye L. Darby May 1967

The Emergence Of The Large Lumber Producers And Their Significance To The Lumber Industry, Kaye L. Darby

Dissertations and Theses

The lumber industry today is both similar to and different from the nation's other major industries. The similarity stems from the fact that all of these industries have had a definite, well-defined transition period from an era dominated by many small, independent entrepreneurs to an era dominated by a small number of large corporations. The dissimilarity between the lumber industry and the other industries is that with the lumber industry the domination by the few large firms has never been as total in scope as that domination by the giants of such industries as oil and transportation. This dissimilarity has …

Using Eriksonian Concepts In Observing Developmental Levels In Two Groups Of Preschool Children, Roland J. Lindstrom Apr 1967

Using Eriksonian Concepts In Observing Developmental Levels In Two Groups Of Preschool Children, Roland J. Lindstrom

Dissertations and Theses

In this study concepts from Erikson's widely cited theory of child development were operationally defined and empirically tested.

The purposes of the study were: (1) to ascertain whether a set of social workers with an understanding of Eriksonian theory could use it in a meaningful way to observe pre-school children; (2) to ascertain whether the theory could be used to differentiate between culturally advantaged, culturally deprived, and, as emerged in the analysis, handicapped children; (3) to ascertain whether the theory could be used diagnostically to obtain information about a child's developmental level or problem area.

In the fall of 1966 …

Birth And Rebirth As A Cultural Symbol, Roberta Foss Apr 1967

Birth And Rebirth As A Cultural Symbol, Roberta Foss

Dissertations and Theses

The corpus of this thesis study consists of a group of monoprints and paintings as well as a written commentary intended as their accompaniment.

The investigation of such a topic as Birth and Rebirth has involved a concern with the existence of symbology meaningful to the topic. The term culture can be clarified to mean both the artist in particular as well as culture in a collective sense. The possibilities of the topic semantically would involve an essayist’s approach. This thesis is not a pictorial essay. Birth and Rebirth as terms evoke images which a painter can simply treat as …

The …

The Doctrine Of The Naqshabandi Order: A Study Of Mysticism In Islam, Madelain Farah Habib Dec 1966

The Doctrine Of The Naqshabandi Order: A Study Of Mysticism In Islam, Madelain Farah Habib

Dissertations and Theses

The word mysticism in the English language has been corrupted and abused by its difference usages in the various disciplines such as religion, poetry, and philosophy. In Islam the only word which refers to a mystic is a Sufi. Sufism, according to its adherents, is the highest form of human experience, the ultimate reality of God. The Sufi theme is "Know thyself and thou wilt know God."

Sufism has been considered by Sufis and by Orientalists as the ancient school of wisdom, of quietism, of attaining the highest union and of purification of the soul. It embodies the strains of …

De Gaulle And Franco-German Relations, 1945-1965, Mary Ann Shumway Aug 1966

De Gaulle And Franco-German Relations, 1945-1965, Mary Ann Shumway

Dissertations and Theses

The dismemberment and reparations policy France followed at the end of World War II as an occupying power in Germany was a traditional approach of the victor to the vanquished. The Saar, the Ruhr, and the Rhineland were the borderlands long in dispute. One new element was the idea that while demanding these territories, an attempt at national rapprochement could be carried on through educational measures. For many Germans the University at Mainz did not balance the dismantled factories.

This postwar period was characterized by European economic ills. The 1947 Marshall Plan, an American approach to restore Europe to economic …

A Series Of Landscape Studies In Oil Painting And Other Media Exploring And Interpreting Natural Landscape Elelments With Emphasis On The Relationship Between Plastic Space And Visual Space, Eugene Neal Olson Aug 1966

A Series Of Landscape Studies In Oil Painting And Other Media Exploring And Interpreting Natural Landscape Elelments With Emphasis On The Relationship Between Plastic Space And Visual Space, Eugene Neal Olson

Dissertations and Theses

In working with paintings dealing with the interpretation of landscape in oil paint and mixed media during the past year, I have seen new possibilities. This is true both of my approach to landscape painting and of the handling of the painting materials. These studies have led me to a freer handling of paint. In addition, they have led me to be able to make a more universal statement concerning landscape itself rather than only a visual representation of one particular landscape. The first indication that a universal statement about landscape could be achieved became apparent to me while I …

"An Approach To Creative Design" Relation Of Composition To Expression With A Particular Emphasis On Color Relationships., Kay J. Moultrie Jun 1966

"An Approach To Creative Design" Relation Of Composition To Expression With A Particular Emphasis On Color Relationships., Kay J. Moultrie

Dissertations and Theses

The main concentration of study for my project was a series of color studies on canvas in which I explored varying proportions of primary color mixtures, unfamiliar color relationships and value ranges. I was particularly interested in exploring varying proportions of color complementaries in working to achieve neutrals. Through-out my studies I worked for a unity in the sequences of color mixtures. For part of my project I worked with collage materials, which were subordinated to color but released me from pure representational subject matter such as still lifes. After a series of these studies I again returned to representational …

Aspects Of The City, Doris Louise Laird Jun 1966

Aspects Of The City, Doris Louise Laird

Dissertations and Theses

The theme evolved into one aspect of a specific city. Portland, Oregon is famous for its bridges. In actuality, they are the hinges that make it a metropolis instead of two middle-sized urban cities. Thinking along these lines, most sketching was concentrated around these connecting links. Eventually the Broadway, Steel and Hawthorne proved to be the most interesting as to line, pattern, and shape as well as most important in the history of the city. These three were combined into a triptych with a different bridge occupying each panel. The most difficult problem was one of composition – how to …

Constructing A Tool For Measuring Common Social Work Activities, Patricia M. Armstrong May 1966

Constructing A Tool For Measuring Common Social Work Activities, Patricia M. Armstrong

Dissertations and Theses

This thesis is one in a series of studies concerned with the interrelationship of General Systems Theory and social work knowledge. The purpose of this particular study was to develop a questionnaire to test the generic quality of the actions performed among the three traditional specialties of social work -- casework, group work and community organization.

The universe from which the sample of concepts was obtained were the acts performed by people in behalf of others. Specifically, the 421 concepts in the sample were obtained from literature in the fields of social work, sociology, psychology, and counseling and guidance. These …

Unmet Social Work Needs In An Inmate Population Of A County Correctional Institution, Jerry M. Harkins May 1966

Unmet Social Work Needs In An Inmate Population Of A County Correctional Institution, Jerry M. Harkins

Dissertations and Theses

This descriptive study was designed to elicit the kinds, extensity and intensity of needs of the inmate population of Multnomah County Correctional Institution, a minimum security jail for misdemeanants.

A guiding hypothesis asserted that there were unmet needs of prisoners which could be met through social work services both within and outside the institution.

Almost the entire population of the institution was interviewed. Open-end and structured responses were recorded on schedules. Five broad areas of need were defined. These were 1) physical needs -- including food, clothing, shelter, and medical care; 2) social needs -- including interpersonal ties, group membership, …

Marital Interaction Theory: Some Implications For Research, Lucille S. Pugh May 1966

Marital Interaction Theory: Some Implications For Research, Lucille S. Pugh

Dissertations and Theses

This project examines specific basic areas of marital interaction theory. Individual chapters are developed around the following themes: historical development of the theory of interaction; a theoretical discussion of selected concepts; personality as a determinant of interaction; communication in marriage; marital interaction patterns; methodology pertaining to research findings; and finally some implications for research which became apparent as this project developed.

The project lays the conceptual groundwork for a series of empirical studies that will use the interactional approach as a theoretical base. The immediate purpose of this project therefore is to describe the important dimensions of the interactional approach …

A Series Of Paintings, Drawings, And Compositions, Oriented Toward A Fine Arts Direction In The Use Of Synthetic And Mixed Media., Judith Frykman

Dissertations and Theses

The thesis is in the form of a commentary on the development of my work from the beginning of this year. The studies have followed a general pattern of closed to open, or linear to painterly. Numerous changes in attitude towards the basic elements of composition, and their use, have taken place. Among those most frequently mentioned are: line, dark and light, intensity and warm-cool color relationships. In connection with these compositional elements, surface texture, subject matter and various media are discussed. Some consideration is given to conflict between conceptual and media orientations. The effect of this conflict in a …
