Over the past five years, increased enrollment in student teaching at Portland State University has forced the School of Education to consider its current guidelines and policies for admitting student teachers. School of Education funding and faculty time are being taxed to meet the demands placed on them by increasing enrollment. This study was undertaken to provide data to determine if and how enrollment in student teaching could be limited. To do this, the study examined the existing guidelines for screening and selecting student teachers. The aim of the design was to determine if any of the existing criteria used …

Changing The Custody Of Children Whose Parents Have Been Divorced: A General View Of The Process, Dorothy E. Bateman May 1970

Changing The Custody Of Children Whose Parents Have Been Divorced: A General View Of The Process, Dorothy E. Bateman

Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this project was to obtain a preliminary description, through study of the legal files, of that group of persons who appear before the Court of Domestic Relations for a reconsideration of the custody decision made initially, at the time of divorce. A sample of 92 cases heard in Multnomah County in 1965 was obtained.

A survey of the literature revealed that much of what has been written on the subject of divorce and custody is primarily from a statistical or legalistic standpoint and very little bears directly on the granting or obtaining of custody or the problems …

Post-Divorce Visitation Of Minor Children: An Exploratory Study, Barbara Griffith May 1970

Post-Divorce Visitation Of Minor Children: An Exploratory Study, Barbara Griffith

Dissertations and Theses

ORS 107.100 gives the court broad powers to secure the "best interests" of minor children as third parties to a divorce. Further, the Oregon Supreme Court has ruled in Tingen vs. Tingen that the best interests of a minor child involve a complex constellation of factors pertaining to the parents, the environment, and the adjustment of the child. It has been assumed in case law that "reasonable visitation" of the minor child by the non-custodial parent is usually in the best interests of the child and is a right" of the non-custodial parent.

Most judges order reasonable visitation as part …

Cubist Painting Related To The Culture From Which It Came And Its Validity Today In The High School Curriculum, Virginia K. Fenton

Dissertations and Theses

Cubism has often been referred to as "a dead art." It is the objective of this thesis to present evidence gained through working with high school art students that the study of Cubism, at the secondary level, can result in greater creativity and a genuine appreciation of the abstract. In addition to the study of Cubist artists and their techniques, a correlation was made between art of the early 1900's and other areas such as Social Science, Music and Literature of this time. By this method, the students were given a broader insight into the motives of the Cubist artists. …

Dissertations and Theses

This is a study of whether an attempt to reduce the trait of high tension-anxiety by means of systematic neuro-musculature relaxation training will result in a decrease of the communication variable of closed-mindedness.

A general review of the literature showed that the problem of tension-anxiety is complex, pervasive, and detrimental to effective communication. First, an attempt is made to bring relevant information to the field of general speech by citing a few findings from the research of other disciplines concerning the nature and effects of tension-anxiety. Currently-used methods of anxiety reduction are mentioned, and one, neuro-musculature relaxation training, discussed as …

Donation Of Organs For Transplantation: An Investigation Of Attitudes And Behavior, Courtney Weldon Goodmonson May 1970

Donation Of Organs For Transplantation: An Investigation Of Attitudes And Behavior, Courtney Weldon Goodmonson

Dissertations and Theses

While technological advances in immunology and surgery have permitted rapid increases in the number of homotransplantations now performed, little is known about layman’s attitudes toward donation of organs. Implicit in such progress has been the medical field's assumption that enough donor organs will be forthcoming to meet the increasing demand. In order to research this area a dual emphasis on practical and theoretical issues was employed. The purpose of the present study then, was to investigate this medical assumption by sampling the attitudes and behavior of college students toward donation of organs for transplant purposes, and at the same time, …

Nutritional Requirements For Protease Production By Pseudomonas Aeruginosa, Ps-1c, Richard Myer Avedovech May 1970

Nutritional Requirements For Protease Production By Pseudomonas Aeruginosa, Ps-1c, Richard Myer Avedovech

Dissertations and Theses

Pseudomonas aeruginosa Ps-1C produces an extracellular proteolytic enzyme which from preliminary studies appears to be inducible, and responsible for corneal destruction in injured dyes. In the present study the nutritional requirements for this bacterium to produce the proteolytic enzyme(s) were investigated. Preliminary studies indicated that proteose peptone offered the required nutrients for good enzyme production. The separation of the components of proteose peptone by Sephadex C-10 and Sephadex G-75 descending column chromatography was undertaken to illucidate the nutritional requirements. It was also noted that casamino acids hydrolysate served as a good substrate for Pseudomonas aeruginosa to produce this enzyme. The …

Non-Linearities In Galvanomagnetic Effects In Bismuth At Low Temperatures, David Lawrence Luce May 1970

Non-Linearities In Galvanomagnetic Effects In Bismuth At Low Temperatures, David Lawrence Luce

Dissertations and Theses

The magnetoresistance and Hall coefficient of two single crystals of bismuth have been measured at liquid helium temperatures. The purpose of the work was to investigate the non-linearities which had previously been observed in the longitudinal and Hall voltages as a function of current. In addition to continuous current measurements, a pulsed DC technique was used in an attempt to discriminate between the non-linear effects due to heating and a possible intrinsic current dependence of the magnetoresistance and Hall coefficient. The time dependence of both of these galvanomagnetic effects indicates that the rate of heat dissipation from the crystal into …

The Sex Offender In Oregon : Fact And Fallacy, Richard G. Storch, Virginia T. Peterson

Dissertations and Theses

The principal objective of this study was to examine the proposition, advanced by several authorities, that the views, attitudes and beliefs of the public concerning the sex offender and his offense are characterized by fallacy, stereotype and misconception. That the approach to the problem of the sex offense has been and continues to be primarily legislative is a fact that can be demonstrated; and that legislation reflects and is influenced by public attitudes and beliefs is a premise that can be supported. Hence the accuracy or inaccuracy of these public attitudes and beliefs will have a bearing on the legislation …

Mobility Of Physicians Into Prepaid Group Health Practice; A Case Study, Ann Schroeder Sato

Dissertations and Theses

This thesis is concerned with changes over time in the social characteristics of doctors who have entered prepaid group health plans. It focuses on the past social positions which these doctors have occupied and on their status, or rank. The general expectation is that both the rank and positions occupied by doctors prior to entering prepaid group plans have varied as the prestige of these plans has varied. The entrance of physicians into prepaid group health plans was conceptualized as mobility between different contexts of work. Blau’s exchange theory of mobility proved to be the most fruitful source of hypotheses …

Madrona Movers: A Sociological Analysis Of A Work Group As A Process Of Harmony And Dissent, John Vance Cannucci May 1970

Madrona Movers: A Sociological Analysis Of A Work Group As A Process Of Harmony And Dissent, John Vance Cannucci

Dissertations and Theses

The research problem discussed in the thesis is generally concerned with the investigation of a group of men who work as furniture movers. The problem is focused on the dynamic interplay of status equality and status differentiation as contradictions that render harmony and dissension as common group denominators.

Three questions were asked. First, are there consistent ways of behaving while working as a furniture mover? Second, if consistent ways of behavior do exist, how are they related to the notions of status equality and status differentiation? Third, if this latter relationship should exist, can harmony and dissent be conceptualized as …

Women In Professions And Status Inconsistency, Miriam Grace Mcclure May 1970

Women In Professions And Status Inconsistency, Miriam Grace Mcclure

Dissertations and Theses

The general concern of this thesis is with the position of women in the United States. Specifically, the focus is on women in the professions. The theoretical perspective is taken from Everett C. Hughes’ 1945 discussion of “Dilemmas and Contradictions of Status.” Hughes maintained that when an incumbent of a status holds an unexpected auxiliary characteristic he is in a dilemma because others do not know how to respond to the contradictory stimuli. Others’ responses tend to reflect unfavorably back on the individual’s self-image and he seeks to avoid reactions from others by adopting behavior to reduce the impact of …

The traditional Vietnamese school, influenced by thousands years of Confucian concepts and hundred years of French culture, has been ineffective in providing competent scientific and technical personnel, despite a world moving toward …

Validation Of The Orthogonal Dimensions Underlying The Icl And The Octant Constellations Assumed To Be Their Measure, Donald Edward Lange May 1970

Validation Of The Orthogonal Dimensions Underlying The Icl And The Octant Constellations Assumed To Be Their Measure, Donald Edward Lange

Dissertations and Theses

Validity of the orthogonal dimensions underlying the Interpersonal Check List (ICL) and the octant constellations assumed to be their measure was investigated by inferential design. Experimental conditions consisted of 4 role-played videotapes produced so that the interpersonal behavior of the main character would illustrate the 4 poles of the ICL’s 2 bipolar dimensions -- Dominance-Submission and Love-Hostility. So were 200 students enrolled in 8 beginning-psychology summer classes. Each class viewed, via closed-circuit TV, only 1 of the 4 videotapes; then members were asked to describe the main character viewed, by using an ICL form IV. Protocols were scored by a …

A Comparison Of Object Dropping And Echoic Vocalizing As Response Modes To Pure Tone Stimuli Among Mentally Retarded Children, Elton L. Stewart

Dissertations and Theses

Mentally retarded children demonstrate an abnormally high incidence of hearing impairment, and many, particularly those with IQs below 40, are difficult for audiologists to test. Consequently, there is great need among this population for investigating response modes and conditioning of responses to auditory stimuli. A review of the literature reveals no studies of echoic vocalization as a conditioned response mode to pure tone stimuli among the retarded.

In this study, a heterogenous sample of 13 moderately and severely retarded children ranging in age from 7 years 7 months to 16 years 3 months were compared on two response modes to …
