A Study Of The Willingness Of Elderly People To Live With Each Other, Joanne Welander Jan 1971

A Study Of The Willingness Of Elderly People To Live With Each Other, Joanne Welander

Dissertations and Theses

This research project was focused on elderly people and their living arrangements in an attempt to discover whether elderly people would prefer to live alone or with other elderly persons. If it was found that the elderly people interviewed would like roommates, then this would provide information which would be helpful in assessing the need for and determining the feasibility of a roommate service for elderly people.

Willingness to roommate served as the dependent variable. This study tested the relationship between each of two psychological variables, loneliness and independence, and the dependent variable. Loneliness was defined as an elderly person's …

Observations On The Establishment Of Seedlings Of Phoradendron Californicum On Prosopis Juliflora, Richard L. Null Jan 1971

Observations On The Establishment Of Seedlings Of Phoradendron Californicum On Prosopis Juliflora, Richard L. Null

Dissertations and Theses

The mistletoe Phoradendron californicum is a common parasite on the mesquite plant Prosopis juliflora. Seeds of the parasite are deposited upon the host plant by birds and perhaps other agents. Normally seedlings of the parasite become established when the elongating radicle of the embryo comes into contact with a host branch and forms a holdfast. From the underside of the holdfast the primary haustorium enters the host tissue and establishes the parasitic union. Later the aerial portion of the parasite develops. Some seeds of P. californicum follow a different sequence; they stimulate the host to produce gum in the tissue …

Residential Child Care Manpower And Training Needs, Song K. Cho Jan 1971

Residential Child Care Manpower And Training Needs, Song K. Cho

Dissertations and Theses

National movement and local demands indicated the necessity of training programs for child care workers (herein referred to as CCW's) in Oregon. In 1966, the "First National Survey of Children's Residential Institution" was done by Pappenforst & Kilpatrick. This survey showed that the primary concern of directors of children's institution was the quality of CCW's. A national conference was held in Cleveland in 1967 to study the characteristics essential to excellent performance and make recommendations for training programs of CCW's in residential treatment for children. There have been numerous expressions of the demands for training programs in Oregon by directors of …

A Postulated Alternative To Current Oregon Marital Statute (Ors 106.71): A Frankly Revisionist Analysis Of The Concrete Situation, Ken Jones, Ray Kendall, Jan Nolley, Jill Weeden

Dissertations and Theses

According to the Oregon Marriage statute an applicant for a marriage license must present a physician's statement that he is free from certain mental and physical conditions. When the examining physician is not satisfied that the applicant is free from these conditions, the applicant is referred to the Committee of Three, a special standing committee appointed by the Board of Social Protection for determining whether or not a license to marry should be granted.

In the spring of 1970 such a situation was referred to the committee for its consideration. As a result of the committee's involvement with this applicant, …

Totiusque Ecclesiae Suae Sanctae; A Comparison Of The Ecclesiologies Of St. Augustine And Hans Kung, Edward J. Sullivan Jan 1971

Totiusque Ecclesiae Suae Sanctae; A Comparison Of The Ecclesiologies Of St. Augustine And Hans Kung, Edward J. Sullivan

Dissertations and Theses

This paper attempts to compare the ecc1esio1ogies of the fourth century Bishop of Hippo and the controversial twentieth century theo1ogian. In doing so, a study is made of each writer independently in order to extract his conceptual models of the Church. Special significance is given to the names each attributed to the Church and the consequences of these names as they pass from an analogical to an ecc1esio1ogica1 sphere. A study is also made of the functions of office within the Church with respect to the fulfillment of specific ministries. Here the two divide, Augustine meets the Donatist challenge by …

The main body of the study comprises an analytical narrative of Muraviev's activities during the decade that …

The Utilization Of Aides In Public Welfare; Analysis, Evaluation, And Proposal, Leonard Mark Robinson, Shirley Ann Youngstrom Jan 1971

The Utilization Of Aides In Public Welfare; Analysis, Evaluation, And Proposal, Leonard Mark Robinson, Shirley Ann Youngstrom

Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this project was to trace the developments which led to the utilization of para-profess iona1 persons as service aides in public welfare departments and to examine, in particular, the developments in Oregon at the state and county levels. The establishment of such programs was mandated in the Social Security Amendments of 1967. A review of the 1967 legislation showed the legislative intent to be inconsistent with the stated purposes of the program. This inconsistency, it was found, has been reflected in Oregon’s aide program. The theoretical origins underlying the aide concept were also examined in order to …

Assessing The Convenience Factor In Relocating A Day Care Center, Barbara Ann Dauterman Norton, Terry Roger Horton Jan 1971

Assessing The Convenience Factor In Relocating A Day Care Center, Barbara Ann Dauterman Norton, Terry Roger Horton

Dissertations and Theses

This research was undertaken at the request of the the St. Martin Day Nursery staff and advisory board to assist them in assessing what the consequences of relocating their day care center would be to the present users and possible future users. It was requested that special emphasis be given to where users live and work and the method of transportation they used to bring children to and from the center. Therefore, our research has been exploratory, planned more to search for answers and to attempt to generate hypotheses than to test hypotheses. It was not our purpose to designate …

"Follow Through" Services For Child Abuse Cases, Marguerite Matusak Jan 1971

"Follow Through" Services For Child Abuse Cases, Marguerite Matusak

Dissertations and Theses

The Child Abuse Committee in the University of Oregon Medical School was formed in 1966 to help the staff recognize child abuse cases and do something about them. This research report is an evaluation of their effectiveness as I an agency attempting to prevent further injury to the children involved. Indications are that timely intervention and subsequent "follow through" have been helpful to the families and improved the situation substantially. A study of the abuse cases seen through the hospital for the calendar years of 1969 and 1970 revealed that almost all of the children from these study years who …

The Lair Hill Park Neighborhood On Examination Of The Phenomenon Of Community Creation, Joseph S. Uris Dec 1970

The Lair Hill Park Neighborhood On Examination Of The Phenomenon Of Community Creation, Joseph S. Uris

Dissertations and Theses

This thesis is a study of a community in physical isolation. The first chapter describes the methodology used. Short form questionnaires and in-depth interviews were gathered. Three sets of historical maps were drawn from documented sources. A film describing the life style and beliefs of some community residents was made. The second chapter is an evaluation of some of the literature on the neighborhood. This chapter details the hypothesis that external pressures and externally created needs tended in the case of the Lair Hill area to produce a Gemeinschaft-like situation which proves stronger than the many factors making for heterogeneity …

Councils Of Governments: A Study Focusing On Membership, Representation And Voting, Jerry Alan Matson Nov 1970

Councils Of Governments: A Study Focusing On Membership, Representation And Voting, Jerry Alan Matson

Dissertations and Theses

The Council of Governments is a significant new approach to metropolitan cooperation. Of the approximately 150 councils (as of January, 1970), all but 14 have been established since 1965. Councils across the country are characterized by great variety in organization and representation. This paper examines this complexity, particularly in terms of membership, representation and voting.

The first chapter is primarily a short history of the council movement and the forces which have helped to shape its development. The second examines the variety of council functions, organizational structures and financial arrangements.

Chapters III, IV and V are devoted to a detailed …

The European Powers In Africa: Can The Obstacles To National Unity Be Attributed To Them? Nigeria, A Test Case, Bassey John Ituen Sep 1970

The European Powers In Africa: Can The Obstacles To National Unity Be Attributed To Them? Nigeria, A Test Case, Bassey John Ituen

Dissertations and Theses

During the latter part of the nineteenth century, European powers acquired large territorial areas in Africa. These territories ignored the boundaries of old African tribal kingdoms and the African modes of life, because the new countries were to serve as 'common market' areas supplying Europe with the wealth of the tropics. Nigeria is an example of the new superstructure which in operation fails to become a homogeneous entity after the assumption of political power by the Africans. There are problems of existing tribal kingdoms, of geographic distribution of ethnic groups and of traditional values. The British colonization of Nigeria also …

Investigation Of The Alpha-Sub-Gamma Phase In Alnico 6, Cortez Samuel

Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this research project was to study the αᵧ phase in Alnico 6. Other phases were studies for comparison. Also the effect of an applied magnetic field on the formation of the αᵧ phase was investigated.

Three single crystals of Alnico 6 were heat treated for one hour--one at 1250°C, one at 1000°C, and one at 800°C--and water-quenched. The microstructure of each sample was observed with the optical microscope, and X-ray diffraction patterns were taken to determine the crystal structure of the phases present.

Several single crystal samples of Alnico 6 were heat treated at 1000°C and furnace-cooled. …

Religious Commitment And Attitudes Toward Deviant Behavior, Donald Alban Gibbs Sep 1970

Religious Commitment And Attitudes Toward Deviant Behavior, Donald Alban Gibbs

Dissertations and Theses

Troeltsch’s distinction between the church and the sect and similar dichotomies suggest that different kinds of religious organizations affect not only members’ religious beliefs but also their more general attitudes in different ways. For example, the church-type organizations generate more receptiveness to community involvement while the sect-type organizations induce more collective self-centeredness among members. This study examines the tendency toward punitiveness—i.e. a tendency to punish rather than reforms those who break the rules—in a similar context. It was assumed that the individuals belonging to a sect-type organization would be more punitive that those belonging to a church-type organization. The results …

The Effect Of Perceptual-Motor Training On Maladaptive Behaviors Of Emotionally Disturbed Children, Julia Frances Hall Aug 1970

Comparison Of Amounts Of Verbal Response Elicited By A Speech Pathologist In The Clinic And A Mother In The Home, Joan Mathis

Dissertations and Theses

Language assessment of children is an essential task of the speech clinician and many studies have been concerned with the validity of the data gathered. Few studies, however, have investigated examiner variability as a possible source of deviation in language assessment. This study was designed to evaluate and compare the amount of verbal output which children with normal language use when examined by two different examiners when the examiners are in their most comfortable setting.

Six children, four years of age, were examined by a speech pathologist in the clinic and the mother in the home and the 12 fifteen-minute …

An Investigation Of The Airflow Characteristics Of Pulmonary Air Expulsion During Esophageal Speech, Alfred S. Lavorato Aug 1970

An Investigation Of The Airflow Characteristics Of Pulmonary Air Expulsion During Esophageal Speech, Alfred S. Lavorato

Dissertations and Theses

The general purpose of this investigation was to specify further the activity of the pulmonary tract in esophageal speech. Specifically, the study sought to determine whether pulmonary airflow (PAF) rate varied in continuous speech as a function of manner of production, voicing, syllabic position, and perceived level of stoma noise. PAF rate variation was defined as the frequency and magnitude of changes occurring in association with the variables of this study.

Six esophageal speakers utilizing the inhalation method of air intake were classified as high or low stoma (pulmonary) noise speakers on the basis of ratings by three speech pathologists. …

Electron Optical Study Of A Secondary Electron Multiplier, Chang Min Shen Jul 1970

Electron Optical Study Of A Secondary Electron Multiplier, Chang Min Shen

Dissertations and Theses

Electron orbital theory was applied to the design of the geometrical structure of an electron multiplier for an image intensifier. A special structure satisfying production requirements was studied. Electron optical calculations consisted of determining the potential distribution and tracing the electron trajectories. Liebmann's procedure was used to solve Laplace's equation with constant potentials on the multiplier electrodes as boundary conditions. The trajectories were determined by solving the equation of motion in an electrostatic field using a Runge-Kutta procedure. The initial conditions for the trajectories were the initial energies, initial positions, and the initial directions of the secondary electrons. The plotted …

A Survey Of Hearing Loss In The Special Education Classrooms Of Vancouver School District 37, Richard C. Folsom Jul 1970

A Survey Of Hearing Loss In The Special Education Classrooms Of Vancouver School District 37, Richard C. Folsom

Dissertations and Theses

In order for the mentally retarded population to achieve maximum benefit from rehabilitation efforts, it is essential that a complete picture of their abilities and disabilities be obtained. Consequently, the identification of hearing loss is an integral element in any diagnostic procedure. Vancouver School District 37 has directed increased attention toward speech and language training for children in the special education classrooms for the mentally retarded; however, differential hearing diagnosis has been inadequate or totally lacking. In order to more efficiently treat this problem, it was felt that a comprehensive investigation into the incidence and types of hearing loss of …

The Influence Of Tradition On The Process Of Organizational Change: A Study Of Two Oregon Child Care Centers: Edgefield Lodge, Troutdale, And St. Mary's Home For Boys, Beaverton, Helen Paula Grant Jun 1970

The Influence Of Tradition On The Process Of Organizational Change: A Study Of Two Oregon Child Care Centers: Edgefield Lodge, Troutdale, And St. Mary's Home For Boys, Beaverton, Helen Paula Grant

Dissertations and Theses

For over two centuries, child-caring institutions in the United States have helped families care for their children, and have been solicitous as well for the dependent, neglected, and retarded children. Since the founding of the first orphanage in the United States in 1737 by the Ursuline Sisters, after the ravage of an Indian massacre, child care has developed slowly from simple custodial care to institutions giving specialized care in some one single area. This change was a result not only of the need of children for specialized care but also of the advances in the nation's social, economic, and medical …

Attitudes Toward Supervision, Job Satisfaction, And Risk-Taking Behavior And The Relationship To Accident Frequency Ratios, Richard Everett Boggs May 1970

Attitudes Toward Supervision, Job Satisfaction, And Risk-Taking Behavior And The Relationship To Accident Frequency Ratios, Richard Everett Boggs

Dissertations and Theses

This study investigates the efficacy of Kerr's (1957) "Goals-Freedom-Alertness" (GFA) theory of accident causation and Likert’s (1961) theory of dissimilar attitudes between supervisory levels as applied to the U.S. Forest Service. There are two types of ranger districts, those rated high and low on the basis of accident frequency ratios. From each district four subjects from each of two supervisory levels were administered a battery of ten scales. The overall results indicate that neither GFA theory was supported on the district variable, nor Likert's theory on the supervisor variable. The results independent of theory do indicate that the manner in …

The Great Debate: An Examination Of Conflicting Views Regarding American Defense Policies, 1950-1951, Glen J. R. Jackson May 1970

The Great Debate: An Examination Of Conflicting Views Regarding American Defense Policies, 1950-1951, Glen J. R. Jackson

Dissertations and Theses

This paper is an examination of conflicting views regarding American defense policy which surfaced in a debate during the winter and spring of 1950-51 between the Truman Administration and its supporters and a group of conservative Republicans. The research problem involved unraveling the debate's manifold issues, determining its outcome, and analyzing the impact of that outcome on the future of American foreign policy, particularly in Asia.

The debate's principle issues centered around American defense of Europe versus defense of Asia and the reliance on ground troops rather than on sea and air power. The Administration, while believing the United States …

Distribution Of The Sum Of Independent Unity-Truncated Logarithmic Series Variables, Russell James Wayland May 1970

Distribution Of The Sum Of Independent Unity-Truncated Logarithmic Series Variables, Russell James Wayland

Dissertations and Theses

Let X1, X2, ..., Xn be n independent and identically distributed random variables having the unity-truncated logarithmic series distribution with probability function given by f(x;θ) = αθX/x x ε T where α = [-log(1-θ) - θ]-1, 0 < θ < 1, and T = {2,3,...,∞}. Define their sum as Z = X1 + X2 + ... + Xn.

We derive here the distribution of Z, denoted by p(z;n,θ), using the inversion formula for characteristic functions, in an explicit form in terms of a linear combination of Stirling numbers of the first kind. A recurrence relation for the probability function p(z;n,θ) is obtained …

A Demographic Study Based Upon Income, Age And Education Variables As Related To The Willingness Or Unwillingness To Accept Foster Children, John Hughes

Dissertations and Theses

The research problem in this thesis can be briefly stated as a study of a general population to test certain demographic variables, in particular those of income, age and education, which may or may not have a significant relationship to an expressed willingness to care for foster children; and to further examine whether certain special characteristics of a child, in particular those of increased age, physical handicap, minor emotional problems or mental retardation, further increase unwillingness to care for foster children.

The sample was selected by a two- stage cluster sampling taken from the Southeast catchment area of metropolitan Portland, …

The Chemistry Of Trifluorothiolacetic Acid, Patricia Diane Weeks May 1970

The Chemistry Of Trifluorothiolacetic Acid, Patricia Diane Weeks

Dissertations and Theses

Addition reactions of perfluorothiolacetic acid (TFTAA) with organic and inorganic substrates were studied and six new compounds containing the trifluoroacetyl group have been prepared. Two types of reactions were observed, free radical and nucleophilic addition. Under the influence of ultraviolet light, TFTAA (CF₃COSH) adds to olefins to form 1:1 adducts. The CF₃COS• radical appears to be the adding species. Three new olefin adducts were prepared: CF₃COSCFHCF₂H, CF₃COSCH₂CF₂H, and CF₃COSCH₂CFH₂. In addition, this was found to be a new way to prepare CF₃COSCH₂CH₃, which had been previously prepared by another route. Physical constants, analytical data, infrared, ultraviolet, nmr and mass spectra …

Life Drawing In The Secondary Classroom, Marilyn Jean Anderson May 1970

Life Drawing In The Secondary Classroom, Marilyn Jean Anderson

Dissertations and Theses

Life drawing presents some of the most difficult problems in the school art program: the difficulty of securing models, the necessity of using only the clothed model, and the resistance of many students to this particular discipline. The students' confidence in their own drawing abilities is at its nadir during early adolescence, and they become easily discouraged when faced with a live model as a subject. This thesis represents an effort to deal with these problems in a manner suited to the age and maturity level of the students. In order to build their self confidence, basic drawing skills and …

An Electromyographic Comparison Of Muscle Action Potentials Of Listeners Presented Time-Compressed And Normal Speech Stimuli, Barbara S. Moon May 1970

An Electromyographic Comparison Of Muscle Action Potentials Of Listeners Presented Time-Compressed And Normal Speech Stimuli, Barbara S. Moon

Dissertations and Theses

Speech compression is a method of electromyographically reducing the speech signal, resulting in a decrease in the time required for presentation of a message by increasing the number of words per minute. Research in the area of speech compression has to this time been focused on determining the listener response by means of comprehension testing. While comprehension testing uncovers the individual's ability to resolve, organize, and recall a message at accelerated rates, it gives no information about the listener's psychophysical response to compression. Does the individual find listening to compression to be tension-provoking or stressful? Or can a listener accommodate …

Automated Information Retrieval Systems For Legal Research, Robert G. Baylor May 1970

Automated Information Retrieval Systems For Legal Research, Robert G. Baylor

Dissertations and Theses

Purpose. This study of automated information retrieval systems was undertaken to attempt to ascertain the extent and development of a total legal information system.

Overview. Historically, lawyers have searched the statutes and case law in the traditionally manual method. Given consistent high standards of editing, not too complex materials, and a collection of manageable size, this manual method will work to reasonable satisfaction, so long as a document never changes in meaning or significance. Lawyers point out that the present manual system is inadequate because with 30,000 new judicial decisions and 15,000 new statutes being promulgated each year …
