A History Of The American Film Institute, Deborah Jae Alexander
A History Of The American Film Institute, Deborah Jae Alexander
Dissertations
The American Film Institute (AFI) is a highly politicized, powerful organization. To date, most historical documentation and recording of AFI events and activities has been disseminated to the mass media from within the organization through its own publications or in other historical documentation as incidental history in relation to another topic. This dissertation, written as an overview, is the first comprehensive, independent historical examination of the AFI. The examination begins with an exploration of the development, activities and decline of the American Council on Education‟s original AFI and other film organizations that existed prior to the present day AFI. It …

Superintendent Perceptions Of The Accreditation Process In The State Of Mississippi, Betty Mae Merhundrew
Superintendent Perceptions Of The Accreditation Process In The State Of Mississippi, Betty Mae Merhundrew
Dissertations
The No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 provides guidelines that all public schools in the United States must follow. Provisions of this law require that specific assessments be given to all students in schools across the United States and that individual states establish one system of accountability for all schools. Although much is being done, public schools are still lacking in the area of accountability reform. Many states set their own achievement goals and standards for which schools within their states are measured and then held accountable for students’ performance. This study examined the perceptions of all Mississippi school …
Kindergarten Assessments As A Predictor For A Student’S Need For Intervention, Victoria Ellen Weinketz Hoover
Kindergarten Assessments As A Predictor For A Student’S Need For Intervention, Victoria Ellen Weinketz Hoover
Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to determine if the kindergarten assessment results from the three windows in reading, written communication, and mathematics were a valid predictor of a student’s need for intervention up until the conclusion of second grade. Reynolds (1992) suggested that a student’s overall school success is reflective of the approach taken early in kindergarten. With the demands of the No Child Left Behind Act (2001), districts have set in place strategies to meet the standard of all students reading on grade level at the conclusion of the third grade. If districts are to rise to the …
Relationships Between Particle Properties And Scattering In Coastal Waters Of The Northern Gulf Of Mexico Influenced By The Mississippi River, Bruce Alan Spiering
Relationships Between Particle Properties And Scattering In Coastal Waters Of The Northern Gulf Of Mexico Influenced By The Mississippi River, Bruce Alan Spiering
Dissertations
This study was conducted to determine how the characteristics of an assemblage of suspended particles, including their composition and size affect the relationship between the optical scattering coefficient b (m-1), and the dry mass of the particles in suspension. Knowledge of the scattering to total suspended matter (TSM) ratio, i.e. the mass specific scattering coefficient b* (m2/g), is important because the light detected by optical imaging sensors used for remote sensing is the light that has been scattered by particles back through the water surface. If this ratio is not known or varies within the region of interest, accurate estimates …

Cryptid, Phillip Jarett Underwood
Cryptid, Phillip Jarett Underwood
Dissertations
Cryptid is a term from the field of cryptozoology, which ostensibly presents itself as the study of creatures that may or may not exist, such as – but not limited to – Bigfoot, the Loch Ness Monster, and the Jersey Devil. The term itself, cryptid, refers to one of these unknown creatures. The novella presented here concerns a half-Native American man and his struggle to know not only his dead parents, but himself and his place in the world. While cryptids play a minor role within the boundaries of the narrative itself, the novella concerns itself more with the ways …

A Comprehensive Model For Vicarious Traumatization: Examining The Effect Of Therapist, Work, And Supportive Factors On Vicarious Traumatization, Amy Marie Williams
Dissertations
Professional counselors' exposure to demoralizing, tragic stories of trauma, disempowerment and abuse is inevitable. The effects of exposure to traumatized clients on professional counselors have received increased attention in the literature (e.g. Figley, 1995; McCann & Pearlman, 1990a; Pearlman & Saakvitne, 1995). Scholars identified the development of vicarious traumatization as one of the most extreme effects of working with traumatized clients; however, not all practitioners working with traumatized clients will develop vicarious traumatization (McCann & Pearlman; Pearlman & Saakvitne). This study addressed the gap in the literature regarding the examination of a comprehensive theoretical model for vicarious traumatization based on …

First-Generation Faculty: A Phenomenological Exploration Of Their Motivations For Mentoring First-Generation Students, Sarah M. Chase
Dissertations
Research indicates that students from first-generation and low-income backgrounds persist and graduate from college at lower rates than their non-first generation peers. Institutions of higher education can create more welcoming and success-promoting environments for first-generation students by helping them connect with faculty, particularly through mentoring relationships. This research explored the motivations of faculty from first-generation backgrounds who mentored first-generation college students within the federally-funded Ronald E. McNair Postbaccalaureate Achievement Program. Informed by constructivist epistemology and transcendental phenomenological theory as well as Bourdieu's (1986) theory of cultural capital, the phenomenon involving the transition into academe for such first-generation faculty was also …
