Proportional Signs In The Works Of Heinrich Schutz, Jang Woo Park May 2010

Proportional Signs In The Works Of Heinrich Schutz, Jang Woo Park

Dissertations

Some time signatures used in the Neue Schütz Ausgabe (Bärenreither, 1955-2008) differ from both modern signatures and contemporary mensuration signs, obscuring Schütz's original intentions. A review of the history of proportion signs from the late 14th century to the 17th century shows that the four basic mensuration signs of the late 14th century were the foundation of the proportion system throughout the period, and that the proportion signs of the 16th and 17th century were adaptations of modus cum tempore signs and fractions. Although confusion was created through misunderstandings of the meanings of the signs and by attempts to reform …

A Validation Study Of The Planning, Attention, Simultaneous, And Successive (Pass) Theory And Its Relationship To Reading Achievement In Adults, Justin Moore Walker May 2010

A Validation Study Of The Planning, Attention, Simultaneous, And Successive (Pass) Theory And Its Relationship To Reading Achievement In Adults, Justin Moore Walker

Dissertations

This study set out to determine if the Planning, Attention, Simultaneous, Successive (PASS) cognitive processing model, a model previously investigated with children, would hold its factorial structure with adults. A collection of PASS experimental tasks were analyzed through Maximum Likelihood Factor Analysis. A four-factor solution consistent with the theoretical model was found with little variation from the literature. In addition, the extent to which the PASS experimental tasks and composite areas predicted reading achievement was examined through multiple regression. The results suggested that the PASS cognitive processing model provides adequate prediction of academic achievement in adults. The Successive PASS composite …

Organic Chemistry Preconceptions And Their Correlation To Student Success, Jodie T. Wasacz May 2010

Organic Chemistry Preconceptions And Their Correlation To Student Success, Jodie T. Wasacz

Dissertations

When general chemistry students register for organic chemistry, they often have a negative connotation associated with the topic. It has been observed that students talk as if they are experts in what organic chemistry is and exactly how hard it is when many of them have had very little background on the subject. Some students do not even know what topics organic chemistry encompasses. By establishing a framework of where their preconceptions come from and what they are, instructors, will have a better understanding of how to address preconceptions when beginning an organic chemistry course, or perhaps even before. Furthermore, …

The Tale Of Mental Causation: Fact Or Fiction?, Chia-Lin Tu May 2010

The Tale Of Mental Causation: Fact Or Fiction?, Chia-Lin Tu

Dissertations

Mental causation is with us all the time. Being a table is different from being a human---although we are composed of physical particles, we have understanding, reason, or perception, which are able to make a difference in the physical world. In this dissertation, I have detail discussions of contemporary substance dualism, the mind-brain identity theory, and Jaegwon Kim's functionalism, and thus conclude that none of them can provide an appropriate account to the problem of mental causation. By distinguishing the mind from the body, substance dualists face the pairing problem: How does this particular mind unite with this particular body …

Towards Multiplexed Electrogenerated Chemiluminescent Detection, Shijun Wang May 2010

Towards Multiplexed Electrogenerated Chemiluminescent Detection, Shijun Wang

Dissertations

The main objective of this dissertation is to understand and study the principle of electrogenerated chemiluminescence (ECL) and its applications to detect biomolecules simultaneously. Four aspects of ECL were studied. In order to carry out multiplexed ECL detection, both classical and several novel ECL systems have been investigated.

In the first aspect, significant effect of chloride ions on the ECL behavior of the tris(2,2′-bipyridyl) ruthenium(II) (Ru(bpy)3 2+)/tri-n-propylamine (TPrA) system at Au electrode was investigated. At low concentrations (e.g., [Cl-] < 5 mM), the ECL was enhanced; at relatively high concentrations, however, the ECL intensity decreased with the increase of the [Cl-]. At [Cl-] = 90 mM, ~ 50% and 100% ECL inhibition was observed for the first and the second ECL wave, respectively. The electrogenerated chloroaurate anions (AuCl2 - and AuCl4 -) which were verified using an electrochemical quartz-crystal microbalance (EQCM) method were found to be responsible for the ECL inhibition. This study suggests that care must be taken when Au working electrode is used for ECL studies in chloride-containing buffer solutions (widely used in DNA probes) and/or with the commonly used chloride-containing reference electrodes since in these cases the ECL behavior may significantly disagree with that obtained using other electrodes and reaction media.

In the second aspect, the electrochemical behavior of a trinuclear ruthenium(II)- containing complex, [((phen)2Ru(dpp))2RhCl2]5+ (where phen = 1,10-phenanthroline, dpp = 2,3-bis-2-pyridylpyrazine), …

Rational Design Of Self-Assembled Nanostructures Based On Polymers Synthesized Via Aqueous Reversible Addition-Fragmentation Chain Transfer Polymerization, Stacey Kirkland York

Dissertations

Recent advances in reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization have allowed the rational, bottom-up design of biorelevant assemblies. Utilizing foresight, polymers can be tailored to self-assemble into nano-, micro-, and macroscopic structures. Given the size scale on which rationally-designed polymers can be tailored, they hold significant promise in the biomedical field. For example, nanoscale materials can be designed to carry small-molecule and gene therapeutics while macroscopic structures can be tailored for cell growth scaffolds. The design process begins by selecting monomers, chain transfer agents, and reaction conditions which will yield the desired polymer architecture and composition.

The work herein builds …

Guppie: A Coordination Framework For Parallel Processing Using Shared Memory Featuring A Master-Worker Relationship, Sean Christopher Mccarthy

Dissertations

Most programs can be parallelized to some extent. The processing power available in computers today makes parallel computing more desirable and attainable than ever before. Many machines today have multiple processors or multiple processing cores making parallel computing more available locally, as well as over a network. In order for parallel applications to be written, they require a computing language, such as C++, and a coordination language (or library), such as Linda. This research involves the creation and implementation of a coordination framework, Guppie, which is easy to use, similar to Linda, but provides more efficiency when dealing with large …

The Natural Provenance: Ecoliteracy In Higher Education In Mississippi, Sarah Elizabeth Wheeless May 2010

The Natural Provenance: Ecoliteracy In Higher Education In Mississippi, Sarah Elizabeth Wheeless

Dissertations

Researchers have suggested that there is an increasing apathy in the study of natural history both in academic settings and in the scientific community (Schmidly, 2005). Natural history is the cornerstone of ecological literacy. However, most studies of environmental knowledge do not directly address knowledge of local natural history. Instead, they concern knowledge of human environmental issues, environmental concepts, or broad ecological knowledge. Ecoliteracy established the study of natural history as fundamental to environmental knowledge and seeks to determine levels of knowledge of local environments and factors associated with that knowledge (Pilgrim et al., 2007).

This study investigated ecoliteracy in …

Synthesis, Characterization, And Deuterium Labeling Of Polyamides Studied By Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy, Christopher Allen Lange

Dissertations

The synthesis, characterization, and deuterium labeling of polyamides have been investigated. In Chapter II, selective deuterium labeling of various polyamides was demonstrated via a facile method which does not require organic solvent or catalyst. Quantitative solution-state NMR analysis showed deuterium incorporation at the carbon alpha to the carbonyl ranged from 20-75%. Incorporation in ε-caprolactam increased with repeated treatments. Isotopic shift effects for the deuterated materials were additive for all sites within experimental error.

In Chapter III, the effect of stoichiometric imbalances on the polymerization of poly(dodecamethylene terephthalamide)was investigated. Molecular weight was varied by polymerizing the monomer salt with excess diaminododecane, …

Structure-Property Relationships In The Formation Of Polyphenylsulfone Molecular Composites And Nanocomposites, Paul Joseph Jones May 2010

Structure-Property Relationships In The Formation Of Polyphenylsulfone Molecular Composites And Nanocomposites, Paul Joseph Jones

Dissertations

As the constituent phases in a polymer composite approach the molecular level, specific phenomena occur that can lead to significant changes in material properties when only minimal quantities of the additive are incorporated into the polymer matrix. Molecular composite and nanocomposites are state-of-the-art polymeric materials that contain nanostructured additives effectively dispersed within polymer matrices. The properties of molecular composites and nanocomposites are directly related to the interactions of the nanostructured additive and the polymer matrix. Subtle changes to the nanostructured additive can have profound effects on the ultimate properties of the composite material. Therefore, understanding the structure-property relationships in these …

A Study Of The Effective Interfacial Tension Between Miscible Fluids By Spinning Drop Tensiometer And Microfluidics, Gloria Dollie Viner May 2010

A Study Of The Effective Interfacial Tension Between Miscible Fluids By Spinning Drop Tensiometer And Microfluidics, Gloria Dollie Viner

Dissertations

A miscible system is a system in which two fluids can completely dissolve in one another. A sharp concentration gradient can be observed in miscible systems. We studied the concentration gradient or miscible interface between IBA (isobutyric acid) and water, a miscible system near a consulate point (close to the system’s upper critical solution temperature [UCST]). The original hypothesis was that the sharp concentration gradient of IBA/water was due to barodiffusion, a diffusion effect driven by pressure. We tested this hypothesis by studying IBA/water at five different rotation rates and three different temperatures. At 20 oC, increasing rotation acceleration from …

Teacher Depth Of Knowledge As A Predictor Of Student Achievement In The Middle Grades, Tracy Henshaw Jackson May 2010

Teacher Depth Of Knowledge As A Predictor Of Student Achievement In The Middle Grades, Tracy Henshaw Jackson

Dissertations

Schools strive to hire highly qualified teachers to educate and empower students to become high performers (NCEE, 1983; Erickson, 1995). As a part of this effort, teachers are required to obtain specific skills and certification to meet students’ academic needs. While the intent is recognized, there continues to be a discrepancy between highly qualified teachers in the middle grades and student achievement (The Nations Report Card, 2005; Turner-Bissett, 1999). Therefore, it is imperative to examine teachers’ perceptions and instructional strategies that may influence students’ achievement.

The purpose of this study was to determine whether there is a correlation between high-performing …
