Preserving The Bond: Child Welfare Professionals' Perspectives On The Opportunities And Challenges Of Parent-Child Visitation, Lina M. Munoz
Preserving The Bond: Child Welfare Professionals' Perspectives On The Opportunities And Challenges Of Parent-Child Visitation, Lina M. Munoz
Dissertations
The foster care system was designed to be a temporary placement for children when their parents are unable or unwilling to provide proper care and supervision. A permanency plan must be established for all children in care, stating clear goals for a permanent living arrangement to facilitate the child's reunification with his/her family. The current Illinois Child Welfare Practice Model promotes a family-centered, trauma-informed, and strength-based practice approach when providing child welfare services to families in foster care with the caseworker serving as the primary vehicle for facilitating change.
This study explored how this child welfare practice model is reflected …
Novel Role Of Erbb-2 In Inhibition Of Jagged-1-Mediated Trans-Activation Of Notch In Breast Cancer, Kinnari Pandya
Novel Role Of Erbb-2 In Inhibition Of Jagged-1-Mediated Trans-Activation Of Notch In Breast Cancer, Kinnari Pandya
Dissertations
The ErbB-2 gene is amplified and the resulting protein product overexpressed in 15-30% of breast tumors, and associated with aggressive behavior and poor overall survival. Currently, there are two FDA approved therapies targeting ErbB-2 for the treatment of ErbB-2 positive breast cancer: trastuzumab, a humanized monoclonal antibody is directed against the extracellular domain of ErbB-2 and lapatinib, a dual EGFR/ErbB-2 tyrosine kinase inhibitor. Unfortunately, anti-ErbB-2 therapy resistance remains a major problem in metastatic breast cancer. Our data suggested that gene amplification or overexpression of ErbB-2 inhibits Notch-1 transcriptional activity and trastuzumab or lapatinib increased
Notch-1 transcriptional activity. Furthermore, Notch-1 is …

Cheerleaders And Performers: Mental Health Courts In A Midwestern State, Monte Staton
Dissertations
"Cheerleaders and Performers: Mental Health Courts in a Midwestern State" by Monte D. Staton
This dissertation presents a statewide study focusing on a recently developed technique for dealing with persons with mental illness in the criminal justice system: mental health court (MHC). This study of nine MHC programs utilized surveys, interviews, and ethnographic observations to examine the work activities and understandings of the criminal justice and mental health professionals who administer and operate the programs in a Midwestern state. Data were analyzed by combining Goffman's dramaturgical analysis with Dorothy E. Smith's institutional ethnography. Findings reveal that MHC professionals engage in …
Significance Of Protein Interactions In Mediating Af9 Function, Bhavna Malik
Significance Of Protein Interactions In Mediating Af9 Function, Bhavna Malik
Dissertations
Rearrangements of the MLL gene at chromosome band 11q23 have been associated with a heterogeneous group of lymphoid, myeloid and mixed lineage leukemias. MLL rearrangements occur approximately in 70% of infant leukemias and are also common in therapy-related leukemias where patients were previously treated with topoisomerase II inhibitors. Unfortunately, these patients have a poor prognosis. MLL gene rearrangements give rise to chimeric proteins that contain the N-terminal portion of MLL fused to the C-terminal portion of over 50 different fusion partners. The chimeric proteins cause constitutive expression of some MLL target genes such as HOXA9 and MEIS1, and enhanced proliferation …
Understanding The Posttranslational Regulation Of The Response Regulator Rcsb And Acetyl Phosphate As An Acetyl Group Donor In E. Coli, Linda Hu
Dissertations
The observation that Nepsilon-lysine acetylation occurs on a hundreds of proteins in bacteria is a recent discovery. To study the mechanisms that regulate acetylation and to determine if acetylation affects physiology, I studied the Escherichia coli response regulator and transcription factor RcsB, which was reported to be acetylated in vitro. To monitor RcsB activity, I measured transcription from the rprA promoter, which requires RcsB. I confirmed that RcsB is activated by phosphorylation through the Rcs phosphorelay and acetyl phosphate and showed that acetyl phosphate could phosphorylate RcsB. However, a mutant that accumulates acetyl phosphate (ackA) exhibited reduced rprA transcription instead …
Psychotherapist Understanding Of Genital Self-Mutilation Amongst Male To Female Transsexuals, Michael Robert Kenney
Psychotherapist Understanding Of Genital Self-Mutilation Amongst Male To Female Transsexuals, Michael Robert Kenney
Dissertations
Self-mutilation of the genitals is a complex phenomenon that can provoke strong countertransference reactions amongst mental health clinician. Transsexuals who engage in self-inflicted mutilation of the genitals face a potentially increased risk of alienation from healthcare providers due to marginalization and lack of understanding by treating clinicians. Frequently, assumptions are made regarding the motivation for the behavior that fails to take into account the complex interplay between contributing psychological, social, and environmental forces.
This qualitative study explored the experience of four psychotherapists who had encountered the behavior in their work with transsexual clients in order to gain a more accurate …
High School Curriculum Tracks As Determinants Of Post-Secondary Outcomes: A Study Of Track Mobility And Its Effects, William Morrison
High School Curriculum Tracks As Determinants Of Post-Secondary Outcomes: A Study Of Track Mobility And Its Effects, William Morrison
Dissertations
Despite scores of studies that have shown that tracking and ability grouping perpetuate the academic achievement gap that exists in the United States, the practice continues. The reason for this persistence is a confluence of educational, social, and political factors. As tracking will continue as practice for the foreseeable future, research must help to identify the best and worst of tracking practices so that its negative effects are minimized and positive effects maximized. Oakes (2005) has identified five common elements of tracking policies and practices: extent, pervasiveness, flexibility, mobility, and locus of control. Of these elements, it is my contention …
The Role Of Linker 2 (L2) Region In Rhtrim5Α Assembly And Hiv-1 Restriction, Jayalaxmi Sastri
The Role Of Linker 2 (L2) Region In Rhtrim5Α Assembly And Hiv-1 Restriction, Jayalaxmi Sastri
Dissertations
The cellular restriction factor TRIM5alpha inhibits infection by numerous retroviruses in a species specific manner. TRIM5alpha protein from rhesus macaques (rhTRIM5alpha) and a related protein TRIM-Cyp from Owl monkeys restrict infection by HIV-1 while human TRIM5α (huTRIM5alpha) restricts infection by N-tropic murine leukemia virus (N-MLV) but not HIV-1. Several models have been proposed for retroviral restriction by TRIM5 proteins (TRIM5alpha and TRIMCyp). These models collectively suggest that TRIM5 proteins mediate restriction by recognizing specific determinants in the viral capsid and directly binding the capsid. Following binding, the TRIM5 proteins self-associate into large assemblies around the viral capsid, which leads to …
Effect Of Advanced Age On The Innate Immune Response To Cutaneous Wound Infection, Aleah Lin Brubaker
Effect Of Advanced Age On The Innate Immune Response To Cutaneous Wound Infection, Aleah Lin Brubaker
Dissertations
An estimated 25 billion in US health care expenditure is spent on care of chronic, non-healing wounds. The failure to effectively heal wounds is often compounded by co-morbidities, such as diabetes or obesity. Another major patient population afflicted with chronic wounds are the elderly. Advanced age is associated with a decline in immunologic function that contributes to a poor response to vaccination, infection and tissue injury resulting in prolonged hospital stays and age-related morbidity and mortality. Specifically, clinical observations and laboratory studies have suggested an age-related decline in cutaneous wound healing, marked by protracted wound closure, wound dehiscence and chronic …
Making Something Out Of Nothing: Asexuality And Narrative, Elizabeth Hanna Hanson
Making Something Out Of Nothing: Asexuality And Narrative, Elizabeth Hanna Hanson
Dissertations
The existence of asexuality, the non-experience of sexual attraction, forces us to reconsider a great deal of received wisdom about sexuality, subjectivity, and narrative, which are all closely bound together in modernity. These discourses, whose interactions we find in distilled form in the novel, have both necessitated and facilitated asexual erasure. I read asexuality as a threatening absence or stasis jamming the economy of desire that operates between subjects or propels a narrative forward. Grounding my study of asexuality in narrative theory and queer theory, I explore narratives that confront asexuality at the level of content--its manifestations, misrecognitions, and repudiations …
Molecular Functions Of Mll Phd3 Binding To Its Ligands Cyp33 And H3k4me3, Gayathree Raman
Molecular Functions Of Mll Phd3 Binding To Its Ligands Cyp33 And H3k4me3, Gayathree Raman
Dissertations
Mixed Lineage Leukemia protein (MLL) is required for proper embryonic development, and hematopoiesis. It is a SET domain containing histone methyl transferase that trimethylates histone H3 on lysine 4 (H3K4Me3), a histone modification that correlates with active transcription. The 3rd PHD finger of MLL binds to H3K4me3. Thus MLL is a "writer" with an embedded "reader" for H3K4Me3. Cyp33 is another known ligand of MLL PHD3. Over expression of Cyp33 results in transcriptional repression of MLL target genes.
The aim of this study is to determine the biological function of MLL PHD3 binding to H3K4Me3 or Cyp33. Cyp33 binding to …
Addressing The Issue Of Meta-Analysis Multiplicity In Education And Psychology, Joshua R. Polanin
Addressing The Issue Of Meta-Analysis Multiplicity In Education And Psychology, Joshua R. Polanin
Dissertations
The concept of multiplicity, conducting multiple statistical significance tests in one study, has pervaded primary research over the last 7 decades (Hochberg & Tamhane, 1987). This continued discussion was due to the fact that multiplicity increases the probability of committing a Type 1 error (i.e., deriving a false conclusion). Little attention has been paid, unfortunately, to multiplicity in meta-analysis (Tendal, Nuesch, Higgins, Juni, & Gotzsche, 2011) and calls have been made for meta-analysis methodologists to address this critical issue (Bender et al., 2008). As such, the purpose and significance of this project was to answer these calls by formally quantifying …
Value-Centric Methodology For Requirement Verification Under Uncertainty, José F. Martin
Value-Centric Methodology For Requirement Verification Under Uncertainty, José F. Martin
Dissertations
The development of a Department of Defense (DoD) Product, no matter how simple or complex, will ultimately undergo the execution of a requirement verification plan to make sure that the product being developed meets the requirements that it was designed to meet. In DoD organizations, these plans are usually developed and executed with cost and schedule as two significant variables. Technical risk is also addressed but from the context of acknowledging that certain attributes have the potential to impact cost, schedule, or mission. While other influential pressure points are also critical (e.g., expected results, benefits, and uncertainty) these do not …
Environmental Factors Influencing Oxidative Stress In Respiratory Cells, Carresse L. Gerald
Environmental Factors Influencing Oxidative Stress In Respiratory Cells, Carresse L. Gerald
Dissertations
Agriculture workers inhale a variety of dusts, gases, microbes and compounds on a daily basis. Several respiratory diseases display inflammation and oxidative stress as key factors of pathogenesis. To better understand the effects of agricultural dusts on the airway there first needs to be characterization of dust components. Thus, we hypothesized that confinement facilities contain high levels of respirable particles, bacteria, and elements of respiratory importance. We further hypothesized that SCF dust alone or in combination with diepoxybutane (DEB) will result in oxidative stress and phytonutrients from the sorrel plant will reduce these effects. Several bacterial species were identified via …

Biologically Inspired Energy Manager Design For The Greatt Residential Microgrid, Wen Fang
Dissertations
A biologically inspired method, involving the design of an energy manager, for coordinating the operation of a hybrid renewable residential micro-grid is presented. Flexible optimization procedures that minimize the cost of renewable distribution generators based upon the climate and location of the load profile have been developed and modeled in simulation. A novel design of a dual channel converter system and its control system forms the distributed energy storage (DES) system that features the capability of balancing the power flow in the micro-grid (even in the grid-off mode). The proposed energy management system utilizes a back propagation neural network in …
Cfd Analysis And Design Optimization Of Flapping Wing Flows, Martin Alexander Jones
Cfd Analysis And Design Optimization Of Flapping Wing Flows, Martin Alexander Jones
Dissertations
The main objectives of this research work are to perform the CFD analysis of the 3-D flow around a flapping wing in a gusty environment and to optimize its kinematics and shape to maximize the performance. The effects of frontal, side, and downward wind gusts on the aerodynamic characteristics of a rigid wing undergoing insect-based flapping motion are analyzed numerically. The turbulent, low-Reynolds-number flow near a flapping wing is governed by the 3-D unsteady Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (URANS) equations with the Spalart-Allmaras turbulence model. The governing equations are solved using a second-order node-centered finite volume method on a hexahedral mesh that …
Effect Of Doping On Β-Tricalcium Phosphate Bioresorbable Bulk Material And Thin Film Coatings, Suhaila Abdalla
Effect Of Doping On Β-Tricalcium Phosphate Bioresorbable Bulk Material And Thin Film Coatings, Suhaila Abdalla
Dissertations
Magnesium has emerged as a revolutionary biodegradable metal for use as an orthopedic material, it has several advantages over the permanent metallic materials currently in use, including eliminating the effects of stress shielding, improving biocompatibility and degradation properties, thus removing the requirement of a second surgery for implant removal. Due to the rapid degradation of magnesium, it is necessary to control the corrosion rates of the materials to match the rates of bone healing. This dissertation reports on the effect of doping on the properties of β-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP). It also reports on its application as a thin film coating …
Use Of Sweet Potato To Develop A Medium For Cultivation Of Lactic Acid Bacteria, Saeed A. Hayek
Use Of Sweet Potato To Develop A Medium For Cultivation Of Lactic Acid Bacteria, Saeed A. Hayek
Dissertations
This study investigated the use of sweet potatoes (Ipomoea batatas) as a basic component to develop a medium for cultivation of lactic acid bacteria (LAB). Extract from baked sweet potatoes was used to form a sweet potato medium (SPM). SPM was supplemented with 4 g/L of each nitrogen source (beef extract, yeast extract, and proteose peptone #3). Lactobacilli MRS was used as a control medium. Ten LAB strains were used to determine the suitability of SPM serving the growth of LAB. Our results showed no significant (p < 0.05) differences in the optical density, maximum specific growth rates, and bacterial populations between MRS and SPM. SPM also maintained higher pH values throughout the incubation period compared to that in MRS. The cost of SPM was 47% less than the cost of MRS. Further step was taken to determine the suitability of SPM serving LAB enzymatic activity. LAB strains growing in SPM showed relatively higher β-glucosidases, acid phosphatase, and phytase activities and lower a-glucosidase compared to that in MRS. Strains of L. reuteri showed the …
Evading Innate And Adaptive Immunity During Adenovirus Cell Entry, Shauna Marvin
Evading Innate And Adaptive Immunity During Adenovirus Cell Entry, Shauna Marvin
Dissertations
Adenovirus (Ad), a non-enveloped, dsDNA virus, enters cells via clathrin-mediated endocytosis. For viral genome delivery to the nucleus, Ad must penetrate endosomal membranes to create defects sufficient for the passage of the 90 nm diameter capsid across cell membranes. Recent observations suggest that adenovirus type 5 (Ad5) capsid uncoating occurs at the cell surface upon binding to both the coxsackievirus and adenovirus receptor and αv integrins. This uncoating event leads to the exposure of the capsid membrane lytic protein VI. Using the cytosolic protein galectin-3 (gal3) as a marker of membrane rupture, we demonstrate that Ad5 membrane rupture occurs …

Inter-Agency Coordination: The Key To Successfully Transition Juvenile Offenders Back Into The Educational Mainstream, Robyn Beth Gordon
Dissertations
The focus of this study was to determine the characteristics of successful re-entry programs for youth as they transition back into the educational mainstream. The study was also used to determine the implementation needed for effective inter-agency coordination of social service systems for students to successfully transition into the educational setting. The NCLB accountability measures were reviewed to discover how the measures influenced educators and created a reluctance to accept delinquent youth when they re-enter public school. The three overarching questions addressed in this study were: What inter-agency involvement is necessary in implementing a successful re-entry program? What are the …

Using The Theory Of Planned Behavior As A Predictor Of Radiologic Technologists' Use Of Patient Radiation Protection Best Practices: A Regional Study, Brenda L. Boyd
Dissertations
Problem. A growing concern exists that patients are receiving an increase in radiation exposure while undergoing medical imaging exams. According to a March 2009 report by the National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurements (NCRP), the U.S. population's total exposure to ionizing radiation has nearly doubled over the past two decades. With the introduction of new digital radiology equipment, patient dose is on the rise. Possible reasons for a radiologic technologist's behavior include: influence by availability or lack of equipment, policies, social pressure, attitudes, and a safety culture. Little research has been done in this area, specifically with applying a …

Modeling Decision Making In Trauma Centers From The Standpoint Of Complex Adaptive Systems, Castanon De Policarpo
Modeling Decision Making In Trauma Centers From The Standpoint Of Complex Adaptive Systems, Castanon De Policarpo
Dissertations
This research examines complex clinical decision-making processes in trauma center units of hospitals in terms of the impact of complexity on the medical team involved in the trauma event. The science of complex adaptive systems together with human judgment theories provide important concepts and tools for responding to health care challenges in this century and beyond. Clinical decision-makers in trauma centers are placed in urgent and anxious situations that are increasingly complex, making decision-making and problem-solving processes multifaceted. Under stressful circumstances, physicians must derive their decision-making schemas (―internal models‖ or ―mental models‖) without the benefits of judicious identification, evaluation, and/or …
Understanding The Behavior And Attitude Of Professional Athletes In Saudi Arabia Toward Dietary Supplements, Sulaiman O. Aljaloud
Understanding The Behavior And Attitude Of Professional Athletes In Saudi Arabia Toward Dietary Supplements, Sulaiman O. Aljaloud
Dissertations
A dietary supplement is defined as a product taken orally that contains a "dietary ingredient" (vitamins, minerals, herbs, amino acids, enzymes, etc.), and is intended to supplement one's diet. Dietary supplements include plant extracts and concentrates from foods. Supplements help provide required nutrients to fulfill nutritional levels for daily training or competitive performance, and can help remedy nutritional deficiencies. Therefore, it is important that sports professionals have a thorough knowledge of these supplement products. However, athletes need to be informed about the use and possible benefits, side effects, and risks associated with the use of dietary supplements. Four objectives guided …
Fitness Proportionate Niching: Harnessing The Power Of Evolutionary Algorithms For Evolving Cooperative Populations And Dynamic Clustering, Abrham Tibebu Workineh
Fitness Proportionate Niching: Harnessing The Power Of Evolutionary Algorithms For Evolving Cooperative Populations And Dynamic Clustering, Abrham Tibebu Workineh
Dissertations
Evolutionary algorithms work on the notion of "best fit will survive" criteria. This makes evolving a cooperative and diverse population in a competing environment via evolutionary algorithms a challenging task. Analogies to species interactions in natural ecological systems have been used to develop methods for maintaining diversity in a population. One such area that mimics species interactions in natural systems is the use of niching. Niching methods extend the application of EAs to areas that seeks to embrace multiple solutions to a given problem. The conventional fitness sharing technique has limitations when the multimodal fitness landscape has unequal peaks. Higher …
A Novel Approach To Intelligent Navigation Of A Mobile Robot In A Dynamic And Cluttered Indoor Environment, Daniel Opoku
A Novel Approach To Intelligent Navigation Of A Mobile Robot In A Dynamic And Cluttered Indoor Environment, Daniel Opoku
Dissertations
The need and rationale for improved solutions to indoor robot navigation is increasingly driven by the influx of domestic and industrial mobile robots into the market. This research has developed and implemented a novel navigation technique for a mobile robot operating in a cluttered and dynamic indoor environment. It divides the indoor navigation problem into three distinct but interrelated parts, namely, localization, mapping and path planning. The localization part has been addressed using dead-reckoning (odometry). A least squares numerical approach has been used to calibrate the odometer parameters to minimize the effect of systematic errors on the performance, and an …
Not Peace But The Sword: Violence In Contemporary American Catholic Literature, Michael O'Connell
Not Peace But The Sword: Violence In Contemporary American Catholic Literature, Michael O'Connell
Dissertations
In this dissertation, I argue that violence is a consistent theme in contemporary (post-1945) fiction written by American Catholics, and that these authors employ violence as an aesthetic strategy that is best, and perhaps only, understood when approached through the philosophical and imaginative discourses of their Catholic faith. While the violence in contemporary fictions can be viewed as a product of the power dynamics at work in the modern age, I contend that these power dynamics are not a central concern for Catholic authors. Rather, in Catholic fiction, violence functions as a catalyst that leads characters toward a moment of …
