Effects Of Electrical Stimulation And Testosterone In Translational Models Of Peripheral Nerve Injury, Gina Monaco Jan 2013

Effects Of Electrical Stimulation And Testosterone In Translational Models Of Peripheral Nerve Injury, Gina Monaco

Dissertations

As functional recovery following peripheral nerve injury is dependent upon successful regeneration and target reconnection, combinatorial treatments that enhance different regeneration events may be required for recovery from severe injuries. The neurotherapeutic effects of electrical stimulation (ES) and gonadal steroids have been demonstrated independently and in combination in extratemporal and intratemporal facial nerve injuries. The goals of the first aim were to develop a reliable intracranial facial nerve crush model and to investigate the therapeutic potential of combining ES with testosterone propionate (TP) in this most proximal injury model. Adult male rats were divided into intracranial sham-operated, intracranial crush, and …

A Study Of The Therapeutic Potential Of Af4 Mimetic Peptides, Nisha N. Barretto Jan 2013

A Study Of The Therapeutic Potential Of Af4 Mimetic Peptides, Nisha N. Barretto

Dissertations

Mixed lineage leukemias (MLL) are a group of acute and aggressive leukemias. They account for over 70% of infant leukemias, and 10% of acute adult leukemias. Pediatric ALL and therapy related MLL leukemias carry poor prognosis in spite of several advancement in the field of leukemia research. Therefore, new therapies for MLL leukemias are needed.

Majority of MLL leukemias arise due to the balanced translocations of the MLL gene. As a result of these translocations, chimeric MLL fusion proteins are expressed. The most frequently occurring MLL fusion proteins are known to aberrantly recruit the super elongation complex (SEC) resulting in …

Particulates Initiate Immune Response Via Inducing Oxidative Stress-Mediated Nlrp3 Inflammasome Activation, Zhenyu Zhong Jan 2013

Particulates Initiate Immune Response Via Inducing Oxidative Stress-Mediated Nlrp3 Inflammasome Activation, Zhenyu Zhong

Dissertations

Liposomes are lipid particles formed by self-aggregated phospholipids. They are clinically used both as delivery vectors and immune adjuvants to treat many human infectious and cancerous diseases. However, how liposomes interact with host immune system remains poorly understood. Particularly, little is known about whether an innate immune receptor exists to sense liposomes. I hypothesize that liposomes activate NLRP3 inflammasome in macrophages, which results in the release of interleukin 1β (IL-1β), a proinflammatory cytokine that plays a key role in innate and adaptive immune responses.

To test my hypothesis, I determined the ability of inducing IL-1β secretion from macrophages by differentially …

Comprehensive Investigation Of The Transcription Profiles Of Solanum Lycopersicum Treated With Two Cerato-Platanins From Botrytis Cinerea, Talitha Caudle Jan 2013

Comprehensive Investigation Of The Transcription Profiles Of Solanum Lycopersicum Treated With Two Cerato-Platanins From Botrytis Cinerea, Talitha Caudle

Dissertations

Botrytis cinerea is a severe plant pathogen that destroys more than 200 crop species worldwide. During early infection, B. cinerea secretes a large store of proteins onto the host surface, many of which cause acute necrosis, senescence, and the loss of cell wall integrity. Recently, cerato-platanin (CP) family member BCSNOD1 was found among fungal secretory products. A subsequent expression profile of B. cinerea-infected strawberry showed the early induction of BCSNOD1 and the CP homologue BCSNOD2. The function of CPs is poorly understood, although evidence suggests a role in plant-pathogen interactions. To characterize CP during B. cinerea infection, the interactions of …

The oil compositions of both O. littoralis and S. thurberi was characterized at differing states of necrosis and compared to …

Psychosocial Distress Mediates Immune Dysregulation Through Alterations In Global Epigenetic Patterns And Chromatin Remodeling Proteins, Karen Krukowski Jan 2013

Psychosocial Distress Mediates Immune Dysregulation Through Alterations In Global Epigenetic Patterns And Chromatin Remodeling Proteins, Karen Krukowski

Dissertations

Psychosocial distress, characterized by increased perceived stress, anxiety and mood disturbance, is a common response of women to a diagnosis of breast cancer (Northouse, 1992; Pettingale et al., 1988; Stark and House, 2000; Witek-Janusek et al., 2007). This psychosocial distress leads to activation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenocortical (HPA) axis and increased circulating glucocorticoids (GCs) (Chrousos, 2000; Chrousos and Gold, 1992; Schoneveld and Cidlowski, 2007). Increased psychosocial distress and increased HPA activation can lead to immune dysregulation consisting of reduced natural killer (NK) cell activity (NKCA) (Biondi, 2001; Kiecolt-Glaser et al., 1987; Kiecolt-Glaser et al., 2002; Witek-Janusek et al., 2008; Witek-Janusek et …

Discovered By The Process: A Methodology For Twentieth-Century Moral Fiction, Sean Adriaan Labbe Jan 2013

Discovered By The Process: A Methodology For Twentieth-Century Moral Fiction, Sean Adriaan Labbe

Dissertations

One of the great ironies of the "ethical turn" that literary criticism has taken in the last several decades is that while we as literary critics strive to be ethical or moral, we usually feel embarrassed at actually taking about moral concepts, especially as they are manifested in literary texts. As I am interested in how to discuss moral issues depicted in literary texts without reading them naively and reductively for guidelines to live by or for a social program to implement, my dissertation is designed to model a method of inquiry that approaches literary texts of the twentieth century …

Effects Of Acute Alcohol Exposure On Post Burn Intestinal Immunity: Role Of Il-23, Juan L. Rendon Jan 2013

Effects Of Acute Alcohol Exposure On Post Burn Intestinal Immunity: Role Of Il-23, Juan L. Rendon

Dissertations

More than one million burn injuries are reported yearly within the United States. These injuries result in approximately 500,000 emergency room visits and 40,000 hospitalizations annually. Greater than 50% of these injuries occur under the influence of alcohol/ethanol (EtOH) intoxication. Burn victims who sustain injury under the influence of EtOH exhibit significantly higher rates of morbidity and mortality than patients without EtOH exposure at the time of injury. Several lines of evidence suggest that gut pathogens and/or their products may play a role in the development of sepsis and multiple organ failure reported in burn and trauma patients. In line …

Binge Alcohol And Recovery After Traumatic Brain Injury, Ian Vaagenes Jan 2013

Binge Alcohol And Recovery After Traumatic Brain Injury, Ian Vaagenes

Dissertations

An estimated 275,000 Americans are hospitalized following a traumatic brain injury (TBI) every year, 80,000 of whom develop a long-term disability. The factor that places one at perhaps the greatest risk of suffering a TBI is alcohol intoxication. 30-50% of TBI sufferers have a blood alcohol level above .08 mg/dl at the time of injury, the legal limit in most U.S. states. In fact, the presence of alcohol at the time of TBI more than doubles the risk of a repeat head injury in the two years following the injury. Given the large population of TBI sufferers with alcohol intoxication …

Targeting The Notch-1/Igf-1r/Akt Axis In At Orthotopic Model Of Advanced Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer, Shuang Liang Jan 2013

Targeting The Notch-1/Igf-1r/Akt Axis In At Orthotopic Model Of Advanced Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer, Shuang Liang

Dissertations

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in the U.S. and worldwide. The most frequent type of lung cancer is non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). NSCLC is mostly diagnosed at advanced stages (stage IIIB 18% of cases, stage IV 40% of cases) due to the lack of effective early detection methods. Thus, the discovery of alternative therapeutic strategies is of extreme importance.

Others and we have previously found that Notch signaling plays a crucial role in NSCLC. Our preliminary results indicate that Notch-1 provides necessary survival signals to NSCLC cells by positively regulating IGF-1R to activate the Akt-1 …

Feeling Like A Holy Warrior: Western Authors' Attributions Of Emotion As Proof Of Motives For Violence Among Christian Actors In Military Conflicts, Tenth Through Early Twelfth Centuries, Jilana Ordman Jan 2013

Feeling Like A Holy Warrior: Western Authors' Attributions Of Emotion As Proof Of Motives For Violence Among Christian Actors In Military Conflicts, Tenth Through Early Twelfth Centuries, Jilana Ordman

Dissertations

This dissertation explores two areas of human experience that have been criticized as potentially dangerous and uncontrollable almost consistently since Late Antiquity: violence and those who engage in it, and emotions. However, it will be seen that in the Western Mediterranean and Southern and Central Western Europe, from Late Antiquity through the early-Twelfth Century, these areas were carefully controlled and directed by complex philosophical and religious systems.

Polytheist Roman, and later patristic Christian, authors who wrote within classical and late antique philosophical and religious systems created the accepted norms for the undertaking of organized violence - that which was fought …

Hidden Treasure: The Epistemology Of Love According To Hans Urs On Balthasar, Timothy John Squier Jan 2013

Hidden Treasure: The Epistemology Of Love According To Hans Urs On Balthasar, Timothy John Squier

Dissertations

Many contemporary thinkers have wrestled with the notion that Balthasar is unwilling to consider modern theology's starting point of the consciousness of the knower. Otherwise stated, some scholars argue that Balthasar's point of departure is the will (love) to the neglect of human consciousness (intellect). The purpose of this dissertation is to demonstrate that a constructive analysis of Balthasar's doctrine of revelation brings to light an intricate epistemology that is critical to postmodern epistemological scholarship. By way of Neo-Scholasticism much conversation has taken place pertaining to the relationship between faith and reason within the human knower. Whereas the Neo-Scholastic tradition …

The Costumed Catholic: Catholics, Whiteness, And The Movies, 1928 - 1973, Albert William Vogt Iii Jan 2013

The Costumed Catholic: Catholics, Whiteness, And The Movies, 1928 - 1973, Albert William Vogt Iii

Dissertations

Abstract

This dissertation examines the impact movies had on the place of Catholics of European descent in mainstream white America. Most scholars who study the history of Catholic populations in this country assume that they attained whiteness at some point. Whether with the Irish in the late nineteenth century, or more generally when urban parishes began the move to the suburbs post-World War II, the historiography claims that Catholics earned white status. However, an analysis of twentieth century American film complicates the historiography of Catholicism. A set of negative stereotypes, instead, have colored the presentation of the religion in cinema …

Ex Vivo Induction Of Human Regulatory T Cells, Kathleen Elizabeth Jaeger Jan 2013

Ex Vivo Induction Of Human Regulatory T Cells, Kathleen Elizabeth Jaeger

Dissertations

Regulatory T cells (Tregs) are indispensable in the human immune system in the maintenance of self-tolerance and immune homeostasis. The dysregulation of Treg number and/or function plays a critical role in the pathogenesis of cancer, allergy and human autoimmune pathologies such as multiple sclerosis, psoriasis, rheumatoid arthritis and diabetes. The primary aim of this research was to determine the molecular mechanisms and cellular interactions which promote human Treg induction. From umbilical cord blood (UCB) samples, we found that antigen receptor stimulation of UCB T cells via a CD14+ monocyte population leads to a predominant induction of Tregs.

Further studies identified …

Defining A Role For Inducible Heat Shock Protein 70 (Hsp70i) In Mediating Autoimmune Vitiligo, Jeffrey Alan Mosenson Jan 2013

Defining A Role For Inducible Heat Shock Protein 70 (Hsp70i) In Mediating Autoimmune Vitiligo, Jeffrey Alan Mosenson

Dissertations

Vitiligo is an autoimmune disease characterized by destruction of melanocytes, leaving 0.5% of the population with progressive depigmentation. Current treatments offer limited efficacy. Observations that heat shock proteins (HSPs) can serve as adjuvants in antitumor vaccines first suggested to us a link between HSPs and stress-induced vitiligo. Such proteins are marvelously well conserved throughout evolution, which has placed them in the spotlight for helping to understand the intriguing relationship between infection and immunity. Intracellularly, inducible heat shock protein 70 (HSP70i) is upregulated by stress and helps protect cells from undergoing apoptosis. In times of stress, melanocytes will secrete antigen bound …

The Religion Of Consumption And Christian Neighbor Love, Christopher Porter Jan 2013

The Religion Of Consumption And Christian Neighbor Love, Christopher Porter

Dissertations

Loyola University Chicago

THE RELIGION OF CONSUMPTION AND CHRISTIAN NEIGHBOR LOVE

Consumerism is a word frequently used in various disciplines to express the variety of attitudes, motivations, and practices found among the middle and upper classes. It drives the global economy and influences individuals' socio-psychological perceptions. Some have gone so far as to call consumerism a religion, yet they have not substantiated this claim. This dissertation offers a framework that accounts for consumerism as a religion both as a person's ultimate concern and as a structuralized belief system. As such, it prescribes moral values that shape how people respond to …

Influence Of Pramipexole On Probability Discounting And Ventral Pallidal Function: Assessments In Parkinsonian-Like Rats, Sandra Lynn Rokosik-Kletzel Jan 2013

Influence Of Pramipexole On Probability Discounting And Ventral Pallidal Function: Assessments In Parkinsonian-Like Rats, Sandra Lynn Rokosik-Kletzel

Dissertations

People with neuropathologies who are treated with dopamine agonists may be at risk to develop impulse control disorders. The overall goal of this dissertation project was to expand our knowledge on the neuropsychopharmacology of dopamine agonist-induced impulsivity. At the time this dissertation was being developed, pramipexole was the drug, gambling was the behavior, and Parkinson's disease (PD) was the pathology most widely reported for this phenomenon. Therefore, we first developed a behavioral paradigm (i.e., probability discounting) to measure risk-taking, one aspect of gambling. Utilizing this paradigm, we determine if risk-taking was altered after acute and/or chronic pramipexole treatment. We incorporated …

Using The Theory Of Planned Behavior As A Predictor Of Radiologic Technologists' Use Of Patient Radiation Protection Best Practices: A Regional Study, Brenda L. Boyd Jan 2013

Using The Theory Of Planned Behavior As A Predictor Of Radiologic Technologists' Use Of Patient Radiation Protection Best Practices: A Regional Study, Brenda L. Boyd

Dissertations

Problem. A growing concern exists that patients are receiving an increase in radiation exposure while undergoing medical imaging exams. According to a March 2009 report by the National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurements (NCRP), the U.S. population's total exposure to ionizing radiation has nearly doubled over the past two decades. With the introduction of new digital radiology equipment, patient dose is on the rise. Possible reasons for a radiologic technologist's behavior include: influence by availability or lack of equipment, policies, social pressure, attitudes, and a safety culture. Little research has been done in this area, specifically with applying a …

An Evaluation Of Seawater Pumped Hydro Storage For Regulating The Export Of Wind Energy To The National Grid, Eoin D. Mclean

Dissertations

Hydroelectric power generation has been in use for a very long time. From the earliest watermills to the current large scale Hydro power plants, this is a technology that is proven to be reliable and commercially viable. The use of wind energy to provide mechanical power for the purpose of turning a rotor is also not a new concept.Four years ago TCD Professor of Applied Physics Igor Shvets conceived the idea of solving Ireland’s energy crisis by taking these two proven renewable technologies and combining them. (McGreevey, 2012) The spirit of Ireland initiative seeks to resolve the biggest issues facing …

The Effect Of Co-Teaching On Student Achievement In Ninth Grade Physical Science Classrooms, Karen M. Lafever Dec 2012

The Effect Of Co-Teaching On Student Achievement In Ninth Grade Physical Science Classrooms, Karen M. Lafever

Dissertations

Co-teaching is a method that is increasing within schools across the US as educators strive to leave no child behind. It is a costly method, having two paid instructors in one classroom, with an average of 24 students shared between them. If it significantly increases the achievement of all students, it is well worth the costs involved. However, few studies have analyzed the effectiveness of this method on student achievement. This research follows the academic accomplishments of students in a ninth grade physical science course. Nine sections of the course “Force and Motion” were taught with a single teacher, and …

Adult Jewish Women’S Motivations To Participate In Adult Jewish Education, Teresa Lynn Mareschal Dec 2012

Adult Jewish Women’S Motivations To Participate In Adult Jewish Education, Teresa Lynn Mareschal

Dissertations

Although there have been numerous studies on adult education participation and on adult religious education, little is known about Jewish women’s participation in adult education. A key component of the Jewish religion is lifelong learning, which is nurtured in Jewish people from an early age. Research has indicated that Jewish women participate in adult Jewish educational programs at higher rates than their male counterparts, yet there is a lack of research into what motivates them to engage in these learning opportunities. This research study was designed to examine Jewish women’s motivations and participation in adult Jewish educational programs. A survey …

Family Science: An Ethnographic Case Study Of The Ordinary Science And Literacy Experiences Of One Family, Glenda Margaret Mccarty Dec 2012

Family Science: An Ethnographic Case Study Of The Ordinary Science And Literacy Experiences Of One Family, Glenda Margaret Mccarty

Dissertations

Despite the copious research available on science learning, little is known about ways in which the public engages in free-choice science learning and even fewer studies have focused on how families engage in science to learn about the world around them. The same was true about studies of literacy development in the home until the 1980s when researchers (e.g. Bissex, 1980; Heath, 1983; Taylor, 1983) began documenting the literacy happenings and practices of young children in natural settings. Findings from intensive emergent literacy research studies have challenged traditional approaches to the teaching and learning of literacy, especially drawing attention to …

Coexistence Of Sympatric Taxa Of Chamaecrista Section Xerocalyx: Addressing The Interplay Between Morphology And Biotic Interactions, Beatriz Baker-Méio Dec 2012

Coexistence Of Sympatric Taxa Of Chamaecrista Section Xerocalyx: Addressing The Interplay Between Morphology And Biotic Interactions, Beatriz Baker-Méio

Dissertations

Animal-plant interactions may prevent gene flow and promote divergent selection among closely related plants, ultimately leading to formation of new species. This may be the case for Chamaecrista sect. Xerocalyx, in which two or more of the 24 varieties often are encountered in the same area, with marked morphological and phenological differences among them. Over a broad geographical range, however, the morphological gaps among varieties disappear. Several biotic interactions contribute to the fitness of Chamaecrista species. Their flowers are pollinated by bees, and herbivores attack their leaves, flowers, fruits, and seeds. In addition, all species produce extrafloral nectar, which …

Marine Fungi Of U.S. Gulf Of Mexico Barrier Island Beaches: Biodiversity And Sampling Strategy, Allison Kathleen Walker Dec 2012

Marine Fungi Of U.S. Gulf Of Mexico Barrier Island Beaches: Biodiversity And Sampling Strategy, Allison Kathleen Walker

Dissertations

Marine fungi are an important but often overlooked component of marine ecosystems. Primarily saprotrophic, they are vital to coastal nutrient cycling processes and food webs. However, basic marine fungal distribution data are lacking in many parts of the world, as is knowledge of the sampling intensity required to characterize the biodiversity of these communities. The roles of substrate, season and latitude in shaping intertidal ascomycete community structure were examined for the U.S. Gulf of Mexico, and the role of sampling frequency on species richness estimates was also addressed. Best sampling practices were developed and 750 collections of beach detritus, sand …

Management Of Biological And Chemical Constituents For The Advancement Of Intensive, Minimal-Exchange, Biofloc-Based Shrimp (Litopenaeus Vannamei) Aquaculture, Andrew James Ray Dec 2012

Management Of Biological And Chemical Constituents For The Advancement Of Intensive, Minimal-Exchange, Biofloc-Based Shrimp (Litopenaeus Vannamei) Aquaculture, Andrew James Ray

Dissertations

Intensive, minimal-exchange, biofloc-based shrimp aquaculture systems may provide a sustainable alternative to traditional shrimp culture. Through a series of experiments, this document explores the effects of several key management strategies on water quality, isotopic distribution, and shrimp production.

An experiment evaluated the effects of managing suspended solids (biofloc) concentration at two levels. It was found that using a higher flow rate to larger settling chambers resulted in significantly lower biofloc and nitrate concentrations, and significantly improved shrimp growth rate. A second experiment compared systems with clear water and systems with biofloc. The filters in the clear water systems prevented biofloc …

Nobody's Boy, Linda Maria Mobley Dec 2012

Nobody's Boy, Linda Maria Mobley

Dissertations

"Village literature," literature that is written for and about the tribe, or community, has been a long standing tradition among African American writers such as Toni Morrison. These stories follow that tradition in that they are largely reflective of the African American Experience particularly South Alabama during the sixties. The decade that was marked by such violence and bloodshed is reflected here through the stories of a family experiencing it firsthand, yet who are not fully aware that they are living in a historically significant period of history. It is only through the retrospective lens of a child in that …

The following study employs content analysis to examine the crisis communication responses and audience reception of religious leaders involved in scandal. Benoit’s Image Repair Strategies and the Contingency Theory are used to determine the strategies, stances and contingent variables of mega-church leaders: Jim Bakker, Ted Haggard, Eddie Long, Henry Lyons and Jimmy Swaggart; and the Boston Diocese of the Roman Catholic Church. News framing theory determined media and audience reception of the religious leaders’ crisis communication responses.

The study concludes that there is little difference in mega-church leaders and the Boston Diocese’s crisis communication responses. Religious leaders’ dominant strategies were …

Quantifying Vulnerability After The Storm: Hurricane Katrina Case Study, Jennifer Lori Bonin Dec 2012

Quantifying Vulnerability After The Storm: Hurricane Katrina Case Study, Jennifer Lori Bonin

Dissertations

We can predict social and physical vulnerability with relatively accurate modeling. There are, however, very few consistent models to predict economic vulnerability outside of loss estimation models designed by economists. The index in this dissertation predicts which areas are most economically vulnerable in terms of job loss. Communities rely on their ability to work and contribute to the tax base. Without that base, a community will take longer to recover after a disaster. Which industries, professions, and environmental factors most influence a community’s economic vulnerability in the wake of a disaster? This dissertation presents an index for measuring economic vulnerability …
