Simplified Voice-Based Interaction By Inferring User Intent, Victor Cărbune, Daniel Keysers, Thomas Deselaers

Defensive Publications Series

Carrying out tasks using voice-based user interfaces often requires navigating through a long list of options unless the user happens to know the precise phrase required to reach the desired option directly. Each option can require an interaction turn until all information required to carry out the task of sending the message is specified. This makes the user experience of carrying out the task via voice UI slow and awkward. Alternatively, the user needs to remember to include all relevant information in the initial command which is a difficult, unintuitive, and awkward user experience. This disclosure describes techniques to reduce …

Throttling Downlink Throughput To Mitigate Device Temperature Increase, Shivank Nayak, Blake Kragten, Siddharth Ray

Defensive Publications Series

The temperature of a mobile device can increase due to heavy use, e.g., high-speed downloads, large computational load, etc. Sustained periods of high temperature can damage the mobile device. The techniques of this disclosure reduce downlink throughput upon detection of device temperature that exceeds a threshold. Throughput is reduced, e.g., by signaling the thermal state to the network, by reporting lower channel quality indicator (CQI) values to the network, etc. After the temperature drops to a safe level, throughput is brought back up in a phased manner.

Task-Specific Color Spaces And Compression For Machine-Based Object Recognition, Shumeet Baluja, David Marwood, Nicholas Johnston

Defensive Publications Series

An image is compressed to reduce the memory or bandwidth it occupies. Compression is presently carried out such that the reconstructed (decompressed) image is faithful to the original image. In some recent contexts, images are generated that are not necessarily intended for human viewership. For example, such images are generated for the purposes of machine-based tasks such as action-detection, scene-recognition, etc. In such cases, compression that is driven by fidelity of the decompressed image to the original can be sub-optimal. This disclosure describes techniques to compress images based on the end use of the image. For example, if an image …

Mean-Rotation Aware Rolling Shutter Correction, Chia-Kai Liang, Fuhao Shi Mar 2019

Mean-Rotation Aware Rolling Shutter Correction, Chia-Kai Liang, Fuhao Shi

Defensive Publications Series

A rolling shutter is a method of image capture that captures images scanline by scanline. Consecutive scanlines are captured at slightly different times. If fast relative movement exists between the camera and the world, e.g., during the capture of a fast-moving propeller, the captured scene is distorted. In particular, straight lines may look curved or tilted, since different segments of the straight line are captured at different moments of time. In some situations, a front-facing camera captures images of relatively static faces in the foreground of the image, even as the background experiences high velocity, e.g., due to camera panning. …

Managed Adaptive Spectrum Sharing For Ble, Brian Cornell Mar 2019

Managed Adaptive Spectrum Sharing For Ble, Brian Cornell

Defensive Publications Series

Many Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) advertising devices operate primarily in a transmit-only mode. Prior to start of transmissions, such devices do not test for the presence of other BLE devices that might currently be occupying the spectrum. To minimize collisions, such BLE transmitters add randomness to transmit timing. This technique fails when too many advertisers are in a confined area, as the chance of collisions goes up with the number of advertisers. This disclosure describes managed adaptive spectrum sharing for BLE (MASS BLE), a technique that uses time division multiple access to enable co-located BLE advertisers to share spectrum with …

Virtual Device For Driver Testing, Rob Springer, Kyle Lucke, Andy Koch, Clinton Smullen

Defensive Publications Series

A device driver is a component of an operating system that enables the OS to recognize a certain device and communicate with it. Testing a device driver normally requires either the physical device or a software-emulated version of the device. Physical and simulated devices are intended to work correctly, e.g., they do not generally behave in an unexpected manner. This means that during testing, it is difficult or impossible to verify if the driver is able to handle unexpected behavior of a device, e.g., device behavior that is not supposed to arise in common usage but nevertheless does.

Conversational Hierarchy For Interaction With Virtual Assistant, Alex Jacobson, Jens Nagel, Ye-Jeong Kim Mar 2019

Conversational Hierarchy For Interaction With Virtual Assistant, Alex Jacobson, Jens Nagel, Ye-Jeong Kim

Defensive Publications Series

User interfaces for conversations, e.g., with virtual assistants, typically model conversation as a back-and-forth exchange between participants, e.g., without regard to the type or topic of conversation. Under this user interface, a filter, refinement, or query by the user is added as a new inline block or a full-page refresh, making the user interface cumbersome to use.

This disclosure describes techniques that model conversation as a hierarchy, e.g., with major and minor conversational turns. The user interface is designed around this hierarchy, and a flow between the front-end and the back-end of conversations informs user interactions and client-side page interactions.
