Thermal Mitigation In Mobile Devices, Cp Chiang, Xiantao Sun Jun 2020

Thermal Mitigation In Mobile Devices, Cp Chiang, Xiantao Sun

Defensive Publications Series

In order to prevent damage and component failure from excess heat in a portable electronic device, thermal mitigation measures often are implemented by a thermal control module of the device. Temperature sensors, such as thermistors, provided with individual components of the device provide temperature information to a processor, which also receives information about the use of the device and its environment. Based on the temperature, usage, and environmental information, the processor determines whether thermal mitigation measures should be implemented to lower the temperature of one or more components to below a threshold and, if so, which mitigation measures to implement …

Restricting Low Priority Data Access When Data Quality Is Poor, Mahesh Telang, Shivank Nayak, Qin Zhang

Defensive Publications Series

A user equipment (UE) identifies situations in which a less-preferred radio access technology (RAT) camped on a network is unlikely to provide sufficient data throughput for one or more software applications executing at the UE. In such situations, the UE selectively represents the camped RAT as providing voice service only, even when data service is actually available. Alternatively, rather than a blanket prohibition on use of data services in this situation, the high-level operating system (HLOS) of the UE instead may identify software applications that require a data rate higher than that practicable for the less-preferred RAT under the current …

Boosted Audio Recall For Music Matching, Hanna Maria Pasula, Martin Seiler Jun 2020

Boosted Audio Recall For Music Matching, Hanna Maria Pasula, Martin Seiler

Defensive Publications Series

Music is frequently modified from an original version before uploading to music-sharing or video-sharing websites or social media networks. For example, the music can be remixed, have voice-overs added, or have other edits. In several use cases, e.g., search, deduplication, ensuring fair use, etc. it is of interest to determine if an uploaded audio track is substantially similar to existing audio tracks in a database. However, modifications made to the original version can in some instances be enough that a match is not obtained with any track in the reference database even when the tracks match substantially. This disclosure describes …

Defensive Publications Series

Strategic investments in Artificial Intelligence may enable companies to gain business advantages. There are challenges in using generic natural language processing (NLP) capabilities with complex products and with content that requires specialized domain-specific terminologies. Darwin Information Typing Architecture (DITA)-generated AI schema can leverage enterprise source code to train bots or any other conversational systems to improve the accuracy levels without any manual intervention. A well-defined AI schema is generated from the DITA source files that contain an ontology framework of Intents, Entities, Dialog nodes, along with child nodes, as a result. The schema can be depicted as a JSON file.

Providing Contextual Recommendations Based On Prior Interactions Across Apps, Victor Carbune, Matthew Sharifi Jun 2020

Providing Contextual Recommendations Based On Prior Interactions Across Apps, Victor Carbune, Matthew Sharifi

Defensive Publications Series

A user’s interaction with a virtual assistant is typically limited to the context of a single app. As such, the context and history of a user’s interaction with the virtual assistant within one app is completely isolated from the context of history of the user’s interaction with the virtual assistant when using another app. Such compartmentalization reduces the seamlessness with which users can use a virtual assistant for tasks and recommendations that span across multiple apps. With user permission, the techniques described in this disclosure integrate the knowledge of user interaction across apps and contexts. The information in turn enables …

Frequency Non-Selective Structures For Copper Balance In Pcbs, N/A Jun 2020

Frequency Non-Selective Structures For Copper Balance In Pcbs, N/A

Defensive Publications Series

For better manufacturability, printed circuit boards (PCB) typically have periodic planar metallic structures, known as copper balance structures. Copper balance structures are non-functional such that they play no signal processing or computational role. However, with advancing operating frequencies, copper balance structures can start behaving as frequency-selective surfaces (FSS) in bands that overlap with operating frequencies, causing parasitic effects, e.g., attenuation of desired signals, pickup of undesired signals, undesired radiation, etc. Per techniques of this disclosure, copper added to PCBs for the purpose of copper balance is made of aperiodic structures. The aperiodicity of copper balance structures militates against the formation …

Multidirectional Submarine Optical Branching Unit, N/A Jun 2020

Multidirectional Submarine Optical Branching Unit, N/A

Defensive Publications Series

Submarine optical communication systems use branching units to connect branches of a cable to a main cable trunk. Typically, optic fibers from the trunk are branched to one of two branches, while inter-branch communication is nil. This disclosure describes an architecture for an optical branching unit that enables simultaneous inter-branch and trunk-branch connectivity. Connectivity between the trunks and branches is established using optical switches within the branching unit. The techniques enable greater and more effective use of expensive network infrastructure such as submarine optic fibers and optical branching units.

Preventing Row Hammer Attacks By Dynamic Indirection Of Row Addresses, N/A Jun 2020

Preventing Row Hammer Attacks By Dynamic Indirection Of Row Addresses, N/A

Defensive Publications Series

Row hammer in dynamic random access memories (DRAM) is an effect by which repeatedly activating a row of the DRAM causes bits in nearby rows to flip. Because OS and program variables can be stored adjacent to each other in the DRAM, a malicious program can repeatedly activate DRAM rows to flip nearby bits that store important OS states (e.g., program privileges). In this manner, an attacker can gain unauthorized, privileged access to a computer. This disclosure describes techniques that use a combination of indirection and randomization to make it difficult for an attacker to hammer DRAM rows. Per the …

Automatic Printed Part Removal, Koos Welling Jun 2020

Automatic Printed Part Removal, Koos Welling

Defensive Publications Series

A new build plate for a 3D printer is proposed. The build plate is made out of several beam-shaped floor sections and several driving axes arranged through the floor sections. The driving axes have multiple eccentric parts at the regions within the floor sections, to create an eccentric motion. Such an eccentric motion creates a vertical wave pattern, and it also creates a circular motion in horizontal direction, which will loosen the printed part and transport move it along the build plate. This is because the upper floor sections will always move in one direction, while the return stroke will …
