Technique For Design Of Color Robust As-Built Optical Coatings, Ozan Cakmakci, Moez Haque, Thuy Nguyen Jul 2021

Technique For Design Of Color Robust As-Built Optical Coatings, Ozan Cakmakci, Moez Haque, Thuy Nguyen

Defensive Publications Series

This disclosure describes techniques for the design of optical coatings with low color variation in the presence of manufacturing tolerances, and which are robust to color as-built. Sample stacks of optical coatings are generated using a Monte Carlo technique based on initial design specification parameter(s) of an optical coating stack. The initial design parameter(s) are utilized as a starting point for the optical coating stack that meets color and reflectance requirements nominally prior to tolerances. Each sample stack applies an error in the design parameter(s) based on manufacturing (as-built) error distributions. A merit function that is indicative of the optical …

Importance Sampling For Evaluation Of Video Transcoder Performance, Yao-Chung Lin, Jeremy Dorfman, Neil Birkbeck Jul 2021

Importance Sampling For Evaluation Of Video Transcoder Performance, Yao-Chung Lin, Jeremy Dorfman, Neil Birkbeck

Defensive Publications Series

Optimization of a video transcoder is performed, e.g., by fine-tuning their parameters, based on evaluation of the performance of a transcoder over a small, fixed video dataset. The use of a small, fixed video dataset enables reproducibility, fast evaluation, and regression testing. However, transcoders that are fine-tuned based on a small, fixed dataset can often deliver suboptimal transcoding performance when utilized to transcode videos from a much larger dataset, e.g., videos served by a video hosting and sharing service. This is because a small, fixed set of videos is not sufficiently representative of the total corpus of videos hosted by …

Active Noise Control System With Adaptive Wind Noise Mitigation, Guohua Sun, Liyang Rui, Harry Lau Jul 2021

Active Noise Control System With Adaptive Wind Noise Mitigation, Guohua Sun, Liyang Rui, Harry Lau

Defensive Publications Series

This disclosure describes adaptive wind noise mitigation to provide adaptive acoustic transparency that is based on ambient wind levels. An acoustic transparency system is proposed that includes feedback and feedforward filters. The feedback filter can be dynamically throttled to mitigate low-frequency band wind noise. The feedforward filter is utilized to reduce mid-frequency band wind noise while still maintaining or enhancing high frequency acoustic transparency to enable better conversation quality. A two-microphone coherence-based metric is utilized to detect wind events and to adaptively adjust a transparency level based on the detected wind noise. Digital signal processing (DSP) control blocks are utilized …

Storage Performance Bottleneck Detection In Error-Free Networked Block Storage Environments, Paresh Gupta, Harsha Bharadwaj, Arthur Scrimo

Defensive Publications Series

Enterprise data centers employ a distributed block storage architecture for their Tier 1 workloads. Business-critical applications are hosted on servers having local compute and memory resources, but the storage is centralized within distributed storage devices. Although a distributed block storage architecture helps an enterprise data center in efficiently using storage, when an application slowdown is experienced, the troubleshooting process becomes more difficult and manual. To address these types of challenges, techniques are presented herein that support a data-driven and algorithmic approach to pinpoint the exact root-cause (e.g., a host, a storage area network (SAN), or a storage array) of a …

High-Performance Chips With Reliable Diamond Heat Spreaders, N/A Jul 2021

High-Performance Chips With Reliable Diamond Heat Spreaders, N/A

Defensive Publications Series

An important bottleneck in heat transfer, and hence in the delivery of high performance computing, is the resistance at the chip-coolant junction. This disclosure describes techniques to provide diamond heat spreaders as tiles or mosaics pieced together over an underlying silicon chip. By thus implementing a diamond heat spreader in the form of tiles, the techniques leverage the excellent thermal properties of diamond while resolving the assembly and reliability issues that heretofore existed with it. The …

Power Supply Integrity For Onboard Optical Modules Using Remote Voltage Sensing, N/A Jul 2021

Power Supply Integrity For Onboard Optical Modules Using Remote Voltage Sensing, N/A

Defensive Publications Series

Optical modules on a PCB are typically physically spread out and share the same onboard power supply. To ensure the quality of the transmitted optical signal, the optical modules have tight requirements on the integrity of their power supply, including a maximum permissible DC voltage drop from the power supply output to the module. Modules that are close to the power supply experience smaller voltage drops and better power-supply integrity. Modules that are further away can experience voltage drops large enough to violate specification. This disclosure describes a voltage sensing-line design that leverages the operating configurations of the optical-module array …
