Decoders That Model Unknown Entities, Leonid Velikovich, Petar Aleksic
Decoders That Model Unknown Entities, Leonid Velikovich, Petar Aleksic
Defensive Publications Series
A persistent challenge in noisy-channel decoding is the recognition of unusual or context-specific inputs such as named entities, e.g., names of personal contacts, songs, apps; specialized phrases, e.g., voice commands, technical/medical/legal jargon, etc. Noisy-channel decoding is a problem that occurs in automatic speech recognizers (ASR). This disclosure describes techniques to improve lattice diversity in noisy-channel decoding, resulting in richer decoding lattices. Decoding errors are reduced by using the decoder to model uncertain/unknown entities, e.g., by embedding uncertainty into the training data. Primary errors such as misrecognition of named entities become easier to fix because secondary errors are reduced or avoided. …

Use Of Language Models To Improve Automatic Speech Recognition, Pawel Janus, Agoston Weisz, Aurelien Boffy, Miroslaw Michalski
Defensive Publications Series
Speech recognition enables users to interact with devices via their voice. However, errors in speech recognition during a user’s interaction with such devices can be problematic and lead to a less than satisfactory user experience. This disclosure describes the use of language modeling to recover from automatic speech recognition (ASR) errors by identifying broken queries. The full natural language understanding (NLU) stack is executed to obtain a coherent, alternative, speech recognition. The alternative recognition (or query) runs in parallel to the original, misrecognized query. The potential actions triggered by the misrecognized and the NLU-augmented queries are compared to pick the …

Automatic Color Uniformity Check With Intergrated Scanner Device, Hp Inc
Automatic Color Uniformity Check With Intergrated Scanner Device, Hp Inc
Defensive Publications Series
Current PageWide XL Pro products feature a color uniformity calibration that is performed
by means of the integrated scanner. This procedure usually behaves good enough for
the image quality requirements of this product family, but such behavior might be slightly
worse depending on the media type that is being calibrated. The color uniformity acceptance
criteria is difficult to communicate to the customers and may incur escalations. In
this disclosure it is described an automatic procedure that allows checking and evaluating
whether the calibration results are inside specs or not.

Currently, the construction audit process is manual and as a result may yield inferior quality assurance data collection and report generation. Such an approach may lead to a construction project having poor quality. To address such challenges, techniques are presented herein that leverage satellites and their telemetry data. Aspects of the presented techniques support the remote auditing of construction quality and aid in completing the ‘detective work’ behind fraudulent construction claims (based on different construction parameters, the composition of the materials that are employed during construction, etc.). Further aspects of the presented techniques support estimating the ceiling life of a …

Energy Optimization And Transfer In Electric Vehicles Via Mechanical Coupling, Brian Shucker, Yan Mayster
Energy Optimization And Transfer In Electric Vehicles Via Mechanical Coupling, Brian Shucker, Yan Mayster
Defensive Publications Series
Electric vehicles have a limited range due to limited battery capacity. Also, such vehicles, while having a lower carbon footprint than gasoline vehicles, do not address capacity issues on the road network. The relative sparsity of charging stations and the length of time needed to achieve a full charge can be a hindrance to some EV drivers. This disclosure describes an automatic coupling mechanism between electric vehicles that enables energy transfer between coupled vehicles. Based on commonality of routes, determined with user permission, vehicles automatically form mechanically coupled trains. Vehicles within a train with high energy drive the train and …

A natural and conversational style is difficult on video calls, particularly for the presenter. When the use of a teleprompter is included during such calls, the challenges are highlighted as the camera magnifies even the smallest movements, particularly in the eyes. To address such challenges, techniques are presented herein that support a “dynamic teleprompter” that may be seamlessly embedded within, and integrated into, a collaboration meeting platform. Such a dynamic teleprompter may move strategically (according to one or more of several different movement algorithms) around the speaker's viewing area thus eliminating the problems of static teleprompters and allowing a presenter …

Distinguishing Different Media Types On Scanned Images Using Machine Learning To Automate Media Selection, Hp Inc
Defensive Publications Series
When using a printer, one of the most frequent operations is to load media onto which the printing will
occur.
This operation not only consist in physically loading and placing the media in the paper path for the
printer to feed the media, but also consists in providing some media identification to the printer which
then will be used to select the proper parameters for optimal printing.
Making a mistake in the identification of the media, something with can occur for new operators or
these who do not often use the printer, will lead to a non‐optimal printing image quality. …

Mitigating The Effects Of Eventual Consistency Of Dns Records On The Dns Provider Discovery Mechanism In The Domain Connect Specification, Aditya Gopalakrishnan, Navneet Goel
Defensive Publications Series
Domain Connect is a publicly available standard that enables domain name service (DNS) providers to provide a mechanism for other entities to place or update DNS records on the domain. In the terminology of the CAP theorem, DNS retains availability and partition-tolerance (AP) while dropping consistency. In particular, DNS drops strong consistency for eventual consistency. This disclosure describes techniques to enable the Domain Connect specification to mitigate the effects of eventual consistency of DNS records. The techniques function under various scenarios, e.g., if the _domainconnect TXT record for a new or transferred domain hasn’t been propagated or is malformed.
