In a microservice architecture, a user request can go through a large number of servers owned by several different teams before a response is returned. The request can fail due to failure in any of the servers. Troubleshooting an outage that affects the end user experience in microservice architecture can involve multiple teams and can take a substantial amount of time. This disclosure describes techniques to rapidly locate the root cause entity of a customer-facing failure to node(s) deep within the infrastructure of the service. Per the techniques, end user product teams mark requests with metadata known as critical user …

Preference Token For Communicating User Preferences To Public Or Shared Devices, Peter Lewis, Paula Marques Sep 2023

Preference Token For Communicating User Preferences To Public Or Shared Devices, Peter Lewis, Paula Marques

Defensive Publications Series

Many public domain digital information systems allow guest users to view information, access shared hardware such as printers, etc. However, such access does not take into account user preferences such as font/text size or language for information display, printing preferences, etc. This provides a suboptimal experience to users, e.g., that may not read the displayed language, may prefer larger or smaller text, etc. This disclosure describes the use of a mobile device to provide user preferences via a token that encodes the user preferences. The token is broadcast by the mobile device and the information is received by a public …

Defensive Publications Series

Sliders are user interface elements that enable users to view and select values from a predefined range along a horizontal or vertical bar. Values on a slider are usually incremented with preset multipliers. When a user wants to select a value that requires precision that is not supported by the preset multipliers, the user is not able to achieve the desired accuracy. Such limitations are due to the limited amount of physical space and/or touch sensitivity available for interactions such as tapping or swiping. This disclosure describes a slider user interface that enables users to fine tune value selection using …

Dynamic Exposure Tuning To Reduce False Rejection Rate Of Fingerprint Scanners, N/A

Defensive Publications Series

Optical under display fingerprint scanners (UDFPS) are one method to authenticate a user using their fingerprint. However, such sensors can suffer from inaccurate exposure. This may lead to high false rejection rates and user frustration. This disclosure describes techniques to dynamically tune the exposure setting of a fingerprint scanner based on the quality of fingerprint images captured in the near past. In particular, the exposure setting is dynamically changed based on the recent FRR, image quality (IQ), and average brightness of the recently acquired images. Such dynamic turning can reduce or eliminate false rejection rates.

Techniques To Avoid Call Drop Due To Collisions Between User Equipment-Initiated And Network-Initiated Service Requests, Jis Abraham, Govardhan Yakula

Defensive Publications Series

The user equipment (UE) -initiated service request procedure and the network-initiated service request procedure are the two most common procedures that occur in a Fifth Generation (5G) mobile network. Collisions between signaling for each of these procedures is common. With current Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) standards, such collisions often lead to the looping of these procedures and, eventually, to call drops. This submission proposes techniques to handle potential collisions involving the procedures and, thus, avoid the call loss that typically accompanies such collisions.
