A 3D map labeling system places 2D labels at a depth that is unoccluded by the labeled 3D element of the 3D map but may be occluded by a different 3D element. The 3D map labelling system renders back faces of a 3D model into a Z-buffer. The system then renders a label at a predetermined depth and performs a Z-test by testing the predetermined depth of the label against the Z-buffer. A query rewrite system can be used to improve query understanding of search engines by generating multiple reformulations of the same query using machine translation. The query rewrite system receives an initial query from a user. It then retrieves known related queries to the initial query from a database. Subsequently, the system generates variant queries from the query and the related queries by passing them through a monolingual machine translator. A system and method are disclosed for determining the transcription/translation quality of web video content based on metrics derived from indirect feedback of users on existing captioning. The method may take into account how often the closed caption (CC) option was activated by a user on videos and the number of times users stayed through the whole video content using the closed captions. The system can also be used in assessing quality of manual transcription for languages that do not have automated speech recognition and to validate acoustic and language models in machine translation/transcription.
