This document describes techniques to generate a cinemagraph from a video automatically and without user input. The techniques enable accurate determination of moving regions of pixels in the video which are suitable for animation, by determining mask regions using a dense optical flow technique. Described techniques enable selection of frame sequences from the video that provide smooth and engaging animations for the cinemagraph, by looking for pixel motion under particular criteria. Techniques enable multiple independent cinemagraph animations to be smoothly provided in a single cinemagraph image.

This document describes techniques to display presence indicators in real-time chat applications. The techniques enable accurate presence indicators with low overheads. A server compares successive timestamps to determine whether a time threshold is met. If the time threshold is met, the server pushes an updated last-seen timestamp to clients. Otherwise, the server only selectively pushes the updated last-seen timestamp to clients. The client polls the server if the last-seen timestamp meets a threshold difference from the current time. This disclosure describes techniques to measure the impact of exposure to an offline advertisement on subsequent online and offline actions. A machine learning system infers a “brand score” curve of a video across the run time for the video. To prevent superfluous updating of the location of a mobile device, a search engine can implement a tool to determine if a query is location-based before requesting an updated user location. The tool can also determine a precision of the updated location required to return accurate search results.
