Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Due to catastrophic flood in 2011 the Historic City of Ayutthaya was severely damaged while it was never negatively impacted by flood in its 417-year-history. In fact, the lower central plain of Thailand where Ayutthaya is located is vulnerable from water -related hazards, especially flood regarding its natural settings. This research initially aims to understand what the water management system of Ayutthaya was and how the city was emerged and evolved within the flooding prone area so as to apply the knowledge to present-day circumstances. As a result, the landscape integration approach is developed by using multidisciplinary perspectives since water …

Biomimicry: Function And Aesthetic Of Vacation Home, Chonburi, Suparuek Techaborikiti
Biomimicry: Function And Aesthetic Of Vacation Home, Chonburi, Suparuek Techaborikiti
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
This thesis entitled 'BIOMIMICRY : FUNCTION AND AESTHETIC OF VACATION HOME IN CHONBURI' is an attempt to add an architectural element named fah lai (ฝาไหล literally translated as "flowing wall" popularly translated as "breathing wall") of Thai traditional house to the category of 'biomimicry'. This attempt is problematic because the term 'biomimicry' in architecture was invented in the 1990's much later than the Thai traditional houses. These two words, fa lai and biomimicry, belong to different cultures and different times. Moreover, the term 'biomimicry' itself has various interpretations. In this thesis, I will classify the uses of this word 'biomimicry' …

This thesis is a study of sound in relation to a theory of "EVERYDAY LIFE." It is a supplement to Paul Connerton's view on architecture and memories written in a book entitled How Societies Remember. The ideas are that, first of all, objects, imageries, data can be converted to sound and vice versa. Secondly, sound is considered to be visual memories that exists in space and time. Lastly, it is possible to create a space of sound to exhibit a past life of a built environ. The intention of this study is to document the visual memories of the lost …
A Corpus-Driven Study Of The English Present Perfect In General And Textbook Corpora, Chanakarn Chareonkul
A Corpus-Driven Study Of The English Present Perfect In General And Textbook Corpora, Chanakarn Chareonkul
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Corpus linguistic research has consistently shown that there is an interconnectedness between patterns and meanings in language use (Hunston and Francis, 2000; Römer, 2006). With regard to the present perfect, little attention has been paid to the relationship between verb patterns and meanings expressed through the tense. This may be one of the reasons why second language learners frequently encounter difficulties in mastering the English present perfect. As Yoshimura et al. (2014) argue, language learners are likely to have a problem with the form/pattern-meaning mapping in the use of the present perfect. To fill this gap, the present study takes …
La Rhétorique De La Joute Verbale Dans Les Femmes Savantes De Molière, Passakorn Tongvijid
La Rhétorique De La Joute Verbale Dans Les Femmes Savantes De Molière, Passakorn Tongvijid
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
This research aims to investigate metaphorical patterns in the US legalization of same-sex marriage discourse to shed light on how metaphor is employed to conceptualize same-sex marriage controversies. To this end, a specialized corpus which contains 254 news articles published in 2015 was compiled. The metaphorical expressions in the corpus were analyzed with both "Conceptual Metaphor Theory" (CMT) and "Conceptual Blending Theory" (CBT) to cover not simply the pedestrian uses of metaphors, but also the wild and creative expressions. Specifically, while conventional metaphors were analyzed following the CMT traditions, novel metaphors were analyzed through the lens of blending. The results …
Representations Of The Body In British Science-Fiction Novels From The Late Nineteenth To The Early Twentieth Century: A Study Of Edward Bulwer-Lytton's The Coming Race, H.G. Wells' The Time Machine And Aldous Huxley's Brave New World, Kornnop Jaroenvong
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Many critics have suggested that most of the non-human characters in late-Victorian British science-fiction novels reflect social alienation and the cultural fear of physical, mental and moral degeneration. However, by relying on the concept of critical posthumanism in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries that attempts to debunk anthropocentrism and emphasise the significance of non-human otherness, this thesis studies representations of the body in three British science-fiction novels: Edward Bulwer-Lytton's The Coming Race (1871), H.G. Wells' The Time Machine (1895) and Aldous Huxley's Brave New World (1932), which provide speculative visions of what humans will be in the future. It demonstrates …

The Adaptation Of The Kongtek Ritual In Bangkok's China Town, Jincheng Hu
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
This thesis examines the Kongtek ritual characteristics in Bangkok's Chinatown through fieldwork conducted at several temples. Kongtek rituals in Bangkok's Chinatown retain the core essence of Chinese Kongtek in terms of filial piety and Confucian kinship conception, while adapted in some respects to be compatible with Thai Buddhist beliefs and practices. Those adapted parts include what kind of coffin they use, where the Kongtek rituals take place, the collaboration with Theravada Buddhist funeral chant, the motif design of paper offerings, and so on. Sino-Thai's Chinese ethnic identity is not how orthodox they live their lives in Chinese ways, but rather …
Market Liquidity And Mutual Fund Performance During Financial Crisis, Matina O-Warinrat
Market Liquidity And Mutual Fund Performance During Financial Crisis, Matina O-Warinrat
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Market illiquidity influences mutual fund performance differently between crisis and non-crisis period. A significant drop in market liquidity makes investors panic leading to the early and large redemption. Fund managers have to liquidate the portfolio putting pressure on the asset prices, so the underperformance of mutual fund is recognized in non-crisis period. However, the result of illiquidity is different during crisis. The total effect of market illiquidity is positively related to all fund classes. This could then be interpreted as the evidence of management skills, market-timing and volatility-timing skills in fund managers to provide superior fund performance. Moreover, the further …

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Human dental pulp cells (hDPCs) have shown their plasticity to differentiate into odontoblast-like cell lineages under the treatment of two-members of hydroxamates HDAC inhibitors (HDACis), Trichostatin A (TSA) and Suberoylanilide hydroxamic acid (SAHA). However, a comparison of the potency for stimulating odontoblast-like differentiation and mineralization process among these two HDACis has not been reported. Therefore, we aimed to confirm and compare the stimulatory effect of TSA and SAHA in inducing odontoblast-like differentiation and promoting mineralized-nodule formation. The primary cultured hDPCs was used for MTT assay, ALP activity assay, and alizarin red staining in the presence and absence of TSA and …
