The Conversion Of St. Paul As Reflected By Paul's Usage Of Charis, Marvin Middendorf Jun 1953

The Conversion Of St. Paul As Reflected By Paul's Usage Of Charis, Marvin Middendorf

Bachelor of Divinity

It is the first word of greeting and the last word of farewell in Paul's letters. For Paul, Charis includes the sum of all blessings that come from God through Christ. Grace is for Paul the beginning and the end; the Alpha and the Omega. Robertson says in his “Word Pictures of the New Testament”, “Perhaps no word carries more meaning for St. Paul's message than this word."

The Eighth Century Prophets - Opinion Of Cultus, Carl Graesser Jr Jun 1953

The Eighth Century Prophets - Opinion Of Cultus, Carl Graesser Jr

Bachelor of Divinity

It is the purpose of this essay to study the various interpretations of the three eighth-century prophets, Amos, Hosea, Micah, in an effort to determine their attitude ·toward cultus. In particular the present study will direct itself to the question, “Did these men advocate the complete abolition of sacrifice?” This will of necessity include a consideration of the extent to which each prophet made his position clear. In certain areas the prophets have spoken clearly, in others their attitudes may be inferred. On some points it appears that no tenable conclusions can be drawn.

For Christ Is The End Of The Law For Righteousness To Everyone That Believes Romans 10:4, Howard Raymond Hilsabeck Jun 1952

For Christ Is The End Of The Law For Righteousness To Everyone That Believes Romans 10:4, Howard Raymond Hilsabeck

Bachelor of Divinity

Thus Christ did not end the law--period! In spite of the legalism in His and Paul's day and in spite of the prevailing idea of seeking righteousness by means of the law among the Jews, the apostle is not flatly declaring that Christ ended the law. It is the care of the writer to make this clear. It is also the intention of the writer to make clear what "law” in Romans 10:4 and in what sense Christ ended that law. Our investigation will Deal in depth with the words Τ́ελας and νόμος, bringing in δικουοσ́ννγ and πίστις as they …

Implications Of The Iconoclastic Controversy For The East-West Schism, Warren G. Rubel Jun 1952

Implications Of The Iconoclastic Controversy For The East-West Schism, Warren G. Rubel

Bachelor of Divinity

For nearly a century and a half (726-842) there took place in the Eastern Roman Empire what is termed the Iconoclastic Controversy. This controversy, concerning the use of the icon in the cultic life of the Church, not only contained elements which had significance for the development of the Eastern branches of Christianity, but also brought to a head factors which were to be contributory to the final breach between Eastern and Western Christendom. It is the proposed task of the present thesis to suggest and trace the possible causes and factors which crystallized in the Iconoclastic Controversy and which …

The Use Of The Old Testament In The Sermons Of Acts, Robert C. Schultz Jun 1952

The Use Of The Old Testament In The Sermons Of Acts, Robert C. Schultz

Bachelor of Divinity

The Church’s attitude toward Scripture is reflected in its use of Scripture. This thesis is an attempt to discover the principles which controlled the early church’s use of Scripture. The investigation centers on three points: 1) the text of the Old Testament used by the early church; 2) the early church’s purpose in quoting Scripture; 3) generea1 principles of interpretation followed by the early church. The investigation is restricted to the use of the Old Testament in five sermons recorded in the book of Acts. Since the scope of the investigation is limited, only tentative conclusions can be obtained.

Hades The New Testament Equivalent Of Sheol, Louis A. Brighton Jun 1952

Hades The New Testament Equivalent Of Sheol, Louis A. Brighton

Bachelor of Divinity

The object of this paper is to show the relationship between the Old Testament word Sheol and its New Testament equivalent. The burden of this paper lies in the question: Is Hades the New Testament equivalent of Sheol? This paper then is a study of the words Sheol and Hades to see whether Hades in the New Testament is used in the same way and for the same meaning or meanings that Sheol is used in the Old Testament. This study will point out, besides the relations between Sheol, and its equivalent, the unity in the teaching concerning Sheol and …

The Material And Non-Material Being Of Man As Expressed In The Pertinent Old Testament Works, William Hansen Jun 1952

The Material And Non-Material Being Of Man As Expressed In The Pertinent Old Testament Works, William Hansen

Bachelor of Divinity

The question of the nature and essence of man is an old philosophical problem. It is more, however, than a speculation to occupy the minds of metaphysicians. For the theologian, especially, it has practical relevance. His work is between God and man; he must bring God to men. Thus he should know not only the subject of but also the object for his work, perhaps the latter as well as the former. For how can he bring God's message to man without knowing how to approach man? How can he make God's message meaningful for man unless he knows what …

The Working Syllabus On The Gospel Of St John, Richard Z. Meyer Jun 1952

The Working Syllabus On The Gospel Of St John, Richard Z. Meyer

Bachelor of Divinity

By careful analysis of certain terms used in the Gospel of John, one arrives at a deeper insight into the Gospel. I have made such an analysis but should like to have this analysis serve also a practical end. I have in mind the Bible class teacher who is charged with teaching the Gospel of John. For if the Bible class teacher has a grasp of the fundamental theological terms employed by John, it should not be too difficult for him to gather about these theological terms the materials of the Gospel as John presents them in his twenty-one chapters. …

An Interpretation Of The First Three Petitions Of The Lord's Prayer, Edgar Krentz Jun 1952

An Interpretation Of The First Three Petitions Of The Lord's Prayer, Edgar Krentz

Bachelor of Divinity

This paper will attempt to examine the originality of the Lord's Prayer. To do this the following method will be used. The study is based on the first three petitions. Each petition will be examined in order. The concept underlying each petition will be studied. The study will attempt to determine what this concept meant to the Jew of Jesus' day, what it meant in the Old Testament, and what the New Testament teaching on the subject is. Then the pertinent parallels which have been found will be examined. Following this the three petitions will be examined in their interrelation …

The Purpose Of The Parables According To Mark 4:10-12, Martin E. Marty Jun 1952

The Purpose Of The Parables According To Mark 4:10-12, Martin E. Marty

Bachelor of Divinity

According to the plan of this study, the question as to whether this Logion is an intercalation of later Church teaching within a catena of parabolic sayings is reserved for the final chapter. Yet it is fundamental to an understanding of the discussion as it progresses for the reader to be aware of the critical dismissal of this entire passage as a vaticinium post eventum, interpolated by the evangelist because of the frustration of the early Church as it propagated the message of the Christ.

An Exegetical Study Of Marriage In Ephesians 5, 21-33, Karl H. Lepper Jun 1952

An Exegetical Study Of Marriage In Ephesians 5, 21-33, Karl H. Lepper

Bachelor of Divinity

The original intention of the writer was to make a thorough biblical study of all the passages in the letters of Paul which were concerned with his treatment of the family and its relationships. Material was gathered and the first chapter, which was to be a discussion of marriage, was prepared. However, it soon became apparent that the topic undertaken was entirely too large for the type of paper which was to be prepared. The first chapter of the original thesis covered approximately forty-five pages, and various problems in the text had been either treated lightly or completely ignored. Upon …

The Study Of The Bible In The Middle Ages, E George Krause Jun 1952

The Study Of The Bible In The Middle Ages, E George Krause

Bachelor of Divinity

There is quite a difference of opinion as to the extent of the Middle Ages. We will take the middle ground and roughly limit this era to the years between 500 A. D. and 1500 A. D. This procedure is to be preferred above others which begin or end an era with a certain person or event, because an era is not ushered in overnight, but is rather a gradual and often barely perceptible process. There will be a few instances in the course of this thesis where material extending a number of years either way beyond the above chronological …

An Evaluation Of Adult Confirmation Materials, Frederick Koehler Jun 1951

An Evaluation Of Adult Confirmation Materials, Frederick Koehler

Bachelor of Divinity

Working with adults has proved to me an enjoyable and rewarding experience. This thesis is written with a desire to help give adults that which has proved to be a blessing to me and to fulfill in their lives this same joy which they may have never known.

The author does not pretend to be an authority on this subject matter, but is writing on adult confirmation materials merely because of his love in this field. Neither does he intend to exhaust all the material related to this paper, but merely to present an overview in order to evaluate some …

Form-Criticisim: A Critique And An Evaluation, Robert Jaeger Jun 1951

Form-Criticisim: A Critique And An Evaluation, Robert Jaeger

Bachelor of Divinity

The present thesis cannot do full justice to that comprehensive title for the simple reason that the field of form-criticism is far too broad and complex for the writer to treat it exhaustively in one paper. This thesis will attempt in part to delineate for the reader what form-criticism is and how it works.

Paul's Concept Of Christ As The Wisdom Of God, Bernhard Kurzweg Jun 1951

Paul's Concept Of Christ As The Wisdom Of God, Bernhard Kurzweg

Bachelor of Divinity

Our purpose, then, will be an objective comparison of the functions of Paul's Sophia with the personal Chokmah. The logos of John will frequently enter in by way of comparison. The close relationship between the three will be evident throughout.

Peirasmos In The New Testament - Its Exegetical And Theological Implications, Delwin B. Schneider Jun 1951

Peirasmos In The New Testament - Its Exegetical And Theological Implications, Delwin B. Schneider

Bachelor of Divinity

It is the aim of this study to present the Christian doctrine of temptation as it is found in the words Πeιpόςw and Πeιpθθwός in the New Testament. The terms appear frequently upon its pages. It is my purpose to study these appearances as they are found in the original text and upon such a study formulate the basic New Testament conception of temptation.

The Problen Of The Apparent Conflict Between Paul And James, Paul Ph Spitz Jun 1951

The Problen Of The Apparent Conflict Between Paul And James, Paul Ph Spitz

Bachelor of Divinity

The problem of the exposition of justification is not, however, the only point on which the Epistle of James and the works of Paul are said to vary. Other difficulties that have been cited include the apostles' supposedly varying concepts of sin, their description of God, and the lack of emphasis regarding Christ in the epistle James wrote as compared to the Christ-centered exposition of doctrine penned by Paul.

On these points, as we shall find in this thesis, the difference lies not so much in the words that are expressed by the apostles, but rather in the scope of …

A Study Of Αιωn In Paul's Epistles, G Waldemar Degner Jun 1950

A Study Of Αιωn In Paul's Epistles, G Waldemar Degner

Bachelor of Divinity

There are chiefly three purposes in this study. The first is to gain a better understanding of the Scriptures. To achieve this purpose an individual word has been selected, since it is the author's opinion that such a study will contribute most to a conviction of the unity of the Scriptures, both Old and New Testaments and at the same time facilitate efficiency in handling certain basic mechanical tools for further the future studies, such as the concordances, lexicon, and commentaries.

The Meaning Of Κοινωνεω In Galatians 6:6, Karl F. Breehne Jun 1950

The Meaning Of Κοινωνεω In Galatians 6:6, Karl F. Breehne

Bachelor of Divinity

The problem treated in this thesis arose in an exegetical course on the Epistle to the Galatians when a sharp divergence of interpretations was noticed among several commentators who were consulted in collateral reading. Luther, L. Fuerbringer and William Arndt (the last two in class lectures at Concordia Seminary) held what may be termed the traditional view. According to this view the passage calls for material support of the ministry on the part of the parishioners. It is in this sense, too, that the passage is ordinarily explained in the exposition of Dr. Luther's Small Catechism under the Third Commandment.

An Exegetical Treatment Of I Timothy 2:9-15 As It Pertains To The Privieges Of Women In The Church, William Goerss Jun 1950

An Exegetical Treatment Of I Timothy 2:9-15 As It Pertains To The Privieges Of Women In The Church, William Goerss

Bachelor of Divinity

But for now the subject of this paper necessarily was limited to exegetical study of I Timothy 2:9-15 which is one of the focal points under discussion in the practical discussions revolving around the privileges of women in the church. It should be borne in mind that this is but one phase of a complex responsibility. This paper in no way seeks to answer all the problems involved, nor to draw accuracy on all points from the confusion, nor to formulate any direction for every practical situation in the world of today. That would be impossible on this level even …

The Kingship Motif In The Near Eastern Cultures And In The Psalms, Albert E. Glock Jun 1950

The Kingship Motif In The Near Eastern Cultures And In The Psalms, Albert E. Glock

Bachelor of Divinity

The problem which is presented, the problem of kingship in the Psalms, is not a theme that rises to the top in the Old Testament with any prominence. Yet it will be noticed that throughout the Near East the king played a decidedly important role in community and national life.

Paul's Treatment Of Error In Galatians, Frederick C. Hinz Jun 1950

Paul's Treatment Of Error In Galatians, Frederick C. Hinz

Bachelor of Divinity

The purpose of the present writer in this thesis has been to determine just how Paul went about treating and refuting the error. What were his arguments and attitudes over against his converts? His opponents? The error itself? Were his arguments sound and convincing? Does he leave room for compromise? To what degree does he allow his own self to enter the picture? In attempting to answer these questions, the writer has endeavored at all times to maintain objectivity except where a difference of opinion among leading commentators forced him to exercise selectivity. Detailed exegesis has been kept to a …

An Examination Of The Passages In The New Testament Which Speak Of The Royal Priesthood Of Believers, Norman Brauer Jun 1950

An Examination Of The Passages In The New Testament Which Speak Of The Royal Priesthood Of Believers, Norman Brauer

Bachelor of Divinity

It is the purpose of this thesis to examine the passages of the New Testament which speak of the Royal Priesthood of Believers. Actually, there are only five instances where the Christian priesthood is specifically mentioned. They are I Peter 2:5; I Peter 2:9; Revelation. 1:6; Revelation 5:10; and Revelation 20:6. All other references to priests or priesthood are either to the priestly office of Christ or to Jewish and pagan priests.

The Theme Of Ecclesiastes, Frederick W. Danker May 1950

The Theme Of Ecclesiastes, Frederick W. Danker

Bachelor of Divinity

A brief survey of the critical methods employed by interpreters of the book of Ecclesiastes from the time of the compilers of the Midrashim down to the present day reveals that theological orientation and intellectual disciplines have largely determined the evaluation and interpretation of the book either in its parts or as a whole.

Dramatic Elements In Mark, Kenneth Henry Breimeier Jun 1949

Dramatic Elements In Mark, Kenneth Henry Breimeier

Bachelor of Divinity

The purpose of the paper is, by an analysis of the dramatic features in St. Mark, to bring the reader to a more intimate appreciation of the second Gospel.

The Concept Of Sin In The Old Testament, Holland H. Jones May 1949

The Concept Of Sin In The Old Testament, Holland H. Jones

Bachelor of Divinity

The fact that the invitation to believe is always prededed, in Scripture, by the call to repentance reveals the necessity for an extensive knowledge of sin and it consequences. Scripture teaches that we must be conscious of and sorry for our sins before we can be drawn to the Gospel of Christ.

Epicurean Catchwords In The Letters Of Saint Paul, Eugene Walter Nissen May 1949

Epicurean Catchwords In The Letters Of Saint Paul, Eugene Walter Nissen

Bachelor of Divinity

By way of an historical survey of Hellenistic Greece and of Epicurean expansion, coupled with a comparison of Epicurean and Pauline teaching, this thesis will attempt to show that it is not only possible but very probable that Epicurean catchwords do exist in the writings of St. Paul, and that such terminology was emptied of its former connotation, refilled with Christian meaning, and redirected against the Epicureans.

St Paul's Use Of Military Terms In His Epistles, Robert A. Hobus May 1949

St Paul's Use Of Military Terms In His Epistles, Robert A. Hobus

Bachelor of Divinity

The purpose of this thesis is not to show how Paul was influenced by the Gentile world into which he was born. The writer will not try to point out how the, intellectualism of· the Greeks and the materialism of the Romans influenced Paul in his theology. It will be taken as a positive premise in this thesis that Paul's theology was of divine origin, that his words were inspired words, that his teachings were from God instead of being a mixture of the best thoughts or philosophies that either of these civilizations produced. The fact that Paul was born …

The Doctrine Of The Humanity Of Christ According To The Epistle To The Hebrews, Carl Miller May 1949

The Doctrine Of The Humanity Of Christ According To The Epistle To The Hebrews, Carl Miller

Bachelor of Divinity

To illustrate: if there are five passages that all bring out point "A" of the pre-determined outline of the doctrine, it is not necessary to treat all five passages just to show that point "A" is covered in the epistle. If this procedure seems somewhat arbitrary, we state again that the purpose of this thesis is merely to show how completely the doctrine of Christ's humanity has been revealed in the epistle to the Hebrews.

The Pneuma In Luke-Acts, Ruben C. Baerwald May 1949

The Pneuma In Luke-Acts, Ruben C. Baerwald

Bachelor of Divinity

The chief concern of this investigation will be the meaning and use of πνε̂υμχ in Luke-Acts. We shall discuss the term on the basis of all the relevant passages in order to determine the sense or senses in which Luke uses it and then proceed to a consideration of some of the larger problems connected with the concept.
