Bachelor of Divinity
“Was the synagogue greatly influenced by the surrounding cultures in which it existed, and was the synagogue influential to any extent upon the surroundings in which it existed'?" The purpose of this thesis is to give some directives in order that a correct and factual answer might be obtained to those questions.
The Influence Of The Servant Songson The Titles Of Jesus, Harry W. Hoemann
The Influence Of The Servant Songson The Titles Of Jesus, Harry W. Hoemann
Bachelor of Divinity

A Study Of Jesus' Counseling Techniques With Individuals In The Gospel Of St John Chapters Three And Four, Edward A. Rauff
A Study Of Jesus' Counseling Techniques With Individuals In The Gospel Of St John Chapters Three And Four, Edward A. Rauff
Bachelor of Divinity
The problem which this paper attempts to study and solve: Can the non- directive or psychanalytic approaches to counseling subtly presupposed in most counseling literature be the modus operandi of the Christian minister when these approaches are examined against the attitudes and methods of Jesus towards individuals as recorded in the Gospels, especially chapters three and four of St. John?
An Historical Survey Of The Doctrine Of The Holy Spirit In The Old And New Testaments And Intertestamental Periods, Ralph Frederick Juengel
An Historical Survey Of The Doctrine Of The Holy Spirit In The Old And New Testaments And Intertestamental Periods, Ralph Frederick Juengel
Bachelor of Divinity
Since the Holy Spirit is only referred to explicitly three times in the Old Testament, the reader is amazed that such a jump can be made by John, or Christ for that matter, when speaking about the Holy Spirit, without having to explain just whom they mean. The Jews never take issue with the term in the New Testament. Apparently there must have been some doctrine or teaching prevalent in Christ's day, upon which the fuller revelation is based. The problem of this thesis is to try and find a bridge for the gap between the periods. This demands a …

Justification As Described In The Parable Of The Unforgiving Servant, Matthew 18:23-35, Ray Fred Martens
Bachelor of Divinity
This paper will then deal with a valid emphasis of the Parable of the Unforgiving Servant. Nor will the emphasis of this paper be unique with this writer. It is an emphasis that has not escaped the writings of many interpreters.
The Colossians Heresy, Gabriel H. Mendelman
The Colossians Heresy, Gabriel H. Mendelman
Bachelor of Divinity
This thesis covers the main body of the letter to the Colossians. It contains no remarks on the greeting, 1:1-3, or on the highly personalized conclusion in chapter 4. The concern of the writer is with the polemical portions of the Letter. It has been examined under five headings: first, The Congregation is Faithful; second, The Introductory Prayer; third, The Positive Doctrinal Statement; fourth, The Direct Attack on the Errorists; and fifth, The Practical Exhortations.
The Concept Of Truth In The Gospel According To St. John, John D. Senter
The Concept Of Truth In The Gospel According To St. John, John D. Senter
Bachelor of Divinity
It is well known that the Christian religion offers an answer to the age-old question, “What is truth?" Perhaps it is not so well known that the answer which it gives does not have to be verbalized in such a way that "truth seems to be nothing more than an organized assemblage of highly abstract “concepts.” St. John managed to speak of the ultimate Truth of which Christianity speaks in such a manner that it is seen to be, as in fact it is, concrete, historical, and even personal, when he identified Truth with Jesus. Thus he also showed that …
The Limits Within Which Realized Eschatology May Find A Place In The Eschatological Reference Of The Johannine Corpus, Robert J. Werberig
The Limits Within Which Realized Eschatology May Find A Place In The Eschatological Reference Of The Johannine Corpus, Robert J. Werberig
Bachelor of Divinity
Our chief concern in this thesis will be to show by exegetical investigation that eschatological references in the Johannine Corpus bear witness to an apocalyptically conceived "eschaton," but include also such as may be designated as "realized," and that the distinction between these two must be maintained.
This paper proposes fundamentally to make a study of those passages in John's Gospel which have a bearing on the eschatological question and which demonstrate a distinct eschatological orientation and outlook both in the words of Jesus as recorded by John and in the thought of John himself.

The Son And The Sons An Exegetical Study Of Hebrews 2:5-18, Edwin Lawrence
Bachelor of Divinity

A Study Of The Words Of Jesus: Let A Man Deny Himself And Follow Me--The Relationship Of Renunciation To Discipleship In The Synoptics, A Paul Meyer
Bachelor of Divinity
This research paper is the outgrowth of a personal struggle. The problem posed has in the past very sincerely disturbed the writer; this research has helped him personally in arriving at an answer. The writer's early background gave rise to the problem. His father had at an early age impressed him with the fact that scripture cannot but confront its reader. It is God's message. His mother was reared in a rather legalistic pietism, and this tended to influence him in a pietistic Way. The passages which caused the most mental anguish were those concerning renunciation, passages which, upon first …

The Day Of Yahweh- Its Background And Usage In Selected Prophets, Walter Emil Rast
The Day Of Yahweh- Its Background And Usage In Selected Prophets, Walter Emil Rast
Bachelor of Divinity
The purpose of this study is to deal with some of the problems relevant to this broad, prophetic idea. This involves concerning ourselves, with the origin of the idea, and the form it took in the prophetic mind. As a result, we have devoted the first chapter to an investigation of certain problems connected with the origin and background of the idea. In the second and third chapters, our concern is with the concept as it unfolds itself in the prophetic books. In both these chapters, our intent is one of comparison and contrast, in seeking both common and diverse …
The Concept Of Life In The Psalms Of David, Richard O. Hoyer
The Concept Of Life In The Psalms Of David, Richard O. Hoyer
Bachelor of Divinity
It is the purpose of this paper to show, to some extent, the Old Testament faithful's answers to these questions. It seeks to give his concept of life, what life meant to him, why he thought he was living, and what goal he thought there was in life, and in doing so, to point out that the difference in outlook between him and the New Testament Christian is a difference of language created by a differing amount of revelation, and is not a difference in the fundamental concept of life itself.
The Principals Of Christian Giving According To Second Corinthians Eight And Nine, Roland E. Grumm
The Principals Of Christian Giving According To Second Corinthians Eight And Nine, Roland E. Grumm
Bachelor of Divinity
This thesis is concerned with principles. Its purpose is to ascertain from Paul's dissertation what are the true guidelines for Christian giving. Drawing only from this source of stewardship teaching--the Apostle's exhortation in Second Corinthians--the basis for giving of our means to the Lord shall be established. This will entail a discussion of the "why," the reason that a Christian contributes, and the power that makes a Christian a cheerful giver. Thus the first principles will be set forth under the caption, "The Motives for Christian Giving." Included in this chapter will be a discussion of what the Apostle sets …
The Spanish Erasmian Movement Of The Sixteenth Century, Hector Lazos
The Spanish Erasmian Movement Of The Sixteenth Century, Hector Lazos
Bachelor of Divinity
The purpose of this thesis is to familiarize the readers, at least in part, with the Spanish Erasmian movement of the sixteenth century. Lutheran historical research has given much attention and study to the historical events of the sixteenth century. But when Lutheran historians study one of the movements of that century, they are prone to connect it with the German Lutheran Reformation. This might be because, as Lutherans, they are especially interested in seeing the influence that Luther and Lutheranism might have had on the religious conscience of other nations. For this reason the figure of Erasmus has been …
The New Commandment John 13:34, Earl P. Merz
The New Commandment John 13:34, Earl P. Merz
Bachelor of Divinity
The story is told of a visit that Bishop Ussher made to a certain Nobleman’s home. During the course of the evening meal the subject of religion was thoroughly discussed. One of the questions that, his host put to the Bishop was this: "How many commandments are there?" Without hesitation the bishop replied, "Eleven," and quoted, as an addition to the Decalogue, the passage in St. John’s Gospel that is to serve as the basis for this thesis: "A new commandment give I unto you, that ye love one another, as I have loved you, that ye also love one …

The Preaching Of The Gospel In Selected Lenten Sermon Series Of Bishop Fulton J. Sheen, Donald R. Miesner
The Preaching Of The Gospel In Selected Lenten Sermon Series Of Bishop Fulton J. Sheen, Donald R. Miesner
Bachelor of Divinity
The thrust of this thesis is twofold in essence. It sets out to (1) determine what is contained in the preaching of the Gospel according to the New Testament; and, to (2) determine how Bishop Sheen’s Lenten preaching portrayed that New Testament kerygmatic pattern. The study further reveals that Sheen's Lenten preaching in many instances departs from and/or runs counter to the kerygmatic formulation.

The Concept Of Faith And Hebrews 11:1, John R. Nielsen
The Concept Of Faith And Hebrews 11:1, John R. Nielsen
Bachelor of Divinity
The purpose of the writer, as he began this study, to determine upon the basis of 11:1 what the concept of faith according to Hebrews actually is. However, upon a study of the Epistle itself, we have come to the conclusion that this verse neither defines nor describes faith. Rather it sets forth the only way in which it is possible to have a firm foundation for hope. It makes the assertion that it is by faith that one can have a basis and foundation for eschatological blessings, and certainty in the unseen spiritual realm.

Bachelor of Divinity
This, then, is the purpose of this study: to look more closely at what scholars in many fields have had to say regarding the matter of human language and its ability to make religious assertions. In an attempt to define this purpose more accurately, it will be necessary to: (a) examine the field of contemporary Linguistic Analysis in light of its historical setting;(b) describe the relationship between the phenomenology of language and religious language; (c) consider the work being done presently in the area of modern linguistic studies in biblical research and see its effect upon the formation of theological …
A Study Of The Use Of The Phrase Faithful Is God In The New Testament Writings, Donald D. Schaeffer
A Study Of The Use Of The Phrase Faithful Is God In The New Testament Writings, Donald D. Schaeffer
Bachelor of Divinity
The concept of God's faithfulness is implicit in all of the Sacred Scripture; indeed, one could say that the Bible is, in a sense, the story of God's faithfulness. But only comparatively seldom does this attribute of God come to the surface explicitly. The purpose of this thesis is to study those passages and their context in the New Testament where it is specifically mentioned. Each of those passages is like a facet of a diamond, revealing a new aspect of God's faithfulness, high lighting another element of it, making our conception of it richer and deeper.

The Race Relations Problem Of Today In The Light Of St Paul's Letter To The Ephesians, Walter Lang
The Race Relations Problem Of Today In The Light Of St Paul's Letter To The Ephesians, Walter Lang
Bachelor of Divinity
The great book of the Bible that fits best into the union movement of the Church is the book of Ephesians. This book deals first of all with the thought of Christian unity
Since the Race Relations problem is primarily one of unity, as will be proved in the second chapter of this thesis, and since we are in the union period of the Church, much can be learned on the Race Relations problem for our day from the book of Ephesians.
