Eaf1p Is Required For Recruitment Of Nua4 In Targeting Tfiid To The Promoters Of The Ribosomal Protein Genes For Transcriptional Initiation In Vivo., Bhawana Uprety, Rwik Sen, Sukesh R. Bhaumik
Articles
NuA4 (nucleosome acetyltransferase of H4) promotes transcriptional initiation of TFIID (a complex of TBP and TBP-associated factors [TAFs])-dependent ribosomal protein genes involved in ribosome biogenesis. However, it is not clearly understood how NuA4 regulates the transcription of ribosomal protein genes. Here, we show that NuA4 is recruited to the promoters of ribosomal protein genes, such as RPS5, RPL2B, and RPS11B, for TFIID recruitment to initiate transcription, and the recruitment of NuA4 to these promoters is impaired in the absence of its Eaf1p component. Intriguingly, impaired NuA4 recruitment in a Δeaf1 strain depletes recruitment of TFIID (a TAF-dependent form of TBP) …
Acus - And Administrative Law - Then And Now, Michael Herz
Acus - And Administrative Law - Then And Now, Michael Herz
Articles
The Administrative Conference of the United States (ACUS) both shapes and reflects the intellectual, policy, and practical concerns of the field of administrative law. Its recommendations are therefore a useful lens through which to view that field. Also, because of an unfortunate hiatus, ACUS has gotten underway not once but twice. Those two beginnings provide a kind of natural experiment, and they make a revealing contrast. This article traces the transformations of American administrative law, as well as the field’s perpetual concerns, by comparing the initial recommendations of ACUS 1.0 (1968 to 1970) with the initial recommendations of ACUS 2.0 …
The Institutional Appetite For Quack Corporate Governance, Alicia J. Davis
The Institutional Appetite For Quack Corporate Governance, Alicia J. Davis
Articles
This Article offers evidence that higher quality internal corporate governance is associated with higher levels of ownership by institutional investors. This finding is consistent with the idea that institutions have greater reason than individual investors to prefer well-governed firms, but surprising given the substantial empirical evidence that casts doubt on the efficacy of internal governance mechanisms. The study described in this Article also finds that higher quality external governance is associated with lower proportions of ownership by certain types of institutional investors, also a somewhat surprising result given available empirical evidence on the positive relationship between external governance and firm …
Diagnostics Need Not Apply, Rebecca S. Eisenberg
Diagnostics Need Not Apply, Rebecca S. Eisenberg
Articles
Diagnostic testing helps caregivers and patients understand a patient's condition, predict future outcomes, select appropriate treatments, and determine whether treatment is working. Improvements in diagnostic testing are essential to bringing about the long-heralded promise of personalized medicine. Yet it seems increasingly clear that most important advances in this type of medical technology lie outside the boundaries of patent-eligible subject matter. The clarity of this conclusion has been obscured by ambiguity in the recent decisions of the Supreme Court concerning patent eligibility. Since its 2010 decision in Bilski v. Kappos, the Court has followed a discipline of limiting judicial exclusions from …
Does An Embedded Wind Turbine Reduce A Company’S Electricity Bill? Case Study Of A 300 Kw Wind Turbine In Ireland, Tony Kealy
Articles
In recent years, a growing number of small-to-medium-enterprises are embracing wind turbine projects not only as part of their cost reduction strategy but also to actively play their part in the global fight against climate change. However, it would appear there are currently limited empirical studies carried out in this emerging industry. This case study analyses the cost effectiveness of one such wind turbine initiative by a company in the Republic of Ireland, who invested in a 300 kW embedded wind turbine project at the end of 2013. The research methodology which is primarily a case study analysis included comparing …
Perceived Adequacy Of Illumination, Spatial Brightness, Horizontal Illuminance And Mean Room Surface Exitance In A Small Office, James Duff, Kevin Kelly, Christopher Cuttle
Perceived Adequacy Of Illumination, Spatial Brightness, Horizontal Illuminance And Mean Room Surface Exitance In A Small Office, James Duff, Kevin Kelly, Christopher Cuttle
Articles
This paper presents a pilot study that investigated the suitability of mean room surface exitance as a predictor of spatial brightness and perceived adequacy of illumination, and then compared these results with how horizontal illuminance predicted both items under the same conditions. The experiment included 26 participants. A small office was used for the study. It exposed participants to three levels of mean room surface exitance, each delivered with three different light distributions and across three different surface reflectances, resulting in a total of 27 light scenes. A clear relationship existed between mean room surface exitance and both perceived adequacy …
Establishing A Common Geospatial Approach To Public Transport Service Area Analysis, David O'Connor
Establishing A Common Geospatial Approach To Public Transport Service Area Analysis, David O'Connor
Articles
Previous studies (Harrison & O’Connor, ITRN 2012; O’Connor (2), ITRN 2014) have analysed the walking catchment area for bus, light rail and metropolitan rail stops in suburban parts of Dublin city. Public transport users were sampled at each stop and their absolute trip origin identified. This information was then used to identify and approximate the catchment area for public transport at that location. The purpose of this paper is to collate existing information and establish a common appraisal format using geospatial analysis. Specifically, data from earlier studies will be fed into a geodatabase design and a spatial analytical framework developed …
A Structurally Based Analytic Model Of Growth And Biomass Dynamics In Single Species Stands Of Conifers, Robin J. Tausch
A Structurally Based Analytic Model Of Growth And Biomass Dynamics In Single Species Stands Of Conifers, Robin J. Tausch
Articles
A theoretically based analytic model of plant growth in single species conifer communities based on the species fully occupying a site and fully using the site resources is introduced. Model derivations result in a single equation simultaneously describes changes over both, different site conditions (or resources available), and over time for each variable for each species. Leaf area or biomass, or a related plant community measurement, such as site class, can be used as an indicator of available site resources. Relationships over time (years) are determined by the interaction between a stable foliage biomass in balance with site resources, and …

Sucrose, raffinose, and stachyose are important soluble sugars in soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] seeds. Seed sucrose is a desirable trait for taste and flavor. Raffinose and stachyose are undesirable in diets of monogastric animals, acting as anti-nutritional factors that cause flatulence and abdominal discomfort. Therefore, reducing raffinose and stachyose biosynthesis is considered as a key quality trait goal in soy food and feed industries. The objective of this study was to identify genomic regions containing quantitative trait loci (QTL) controlling sucrose, raffinose, and stachyose in a set of 92 F5:7 recombinant inbred lines (RILs) derived from a cross between …

In Glossip v. Gross, the Supreme Court held that in order to prevail on the claim that a method of execution is cruel and unusual punishment, petitioners must prove that there is an available alternative that entails a lesser risk of pain. In this case, the state was using a method that is allegedly more painful than drugs used in the past because manufacturers of the preferable drugs objected to selling them for the purpose of executions. These manufacturers are not alone in their desire to boycott the death penalty. Many religious groups have declared opposition to the death …

Adopting Agile Practices When Developing Medical Device Software, Martin Mchugh, Fergal Mccaffery, Garret Coady
Articles
Agile methods are gaining momentum amongst the developers of non-safety critical software. They offer the ability to improve development time, increase quality and reduce development costs. Despite this, the rate of adoption of agile methods within safety critical domains remains low. On face value agile methods appear to be contradictory to regulatory requirements. However while they may appear contradictory, they align on key values such as the development of the highest quality software. To demonstrate that agile methods could in fact be adopted when developing regulatory compliant software they were implemented on a medical device software development project. This implementation …

A Comprehensive Review On Pre-Treatment Strategy For Lignocellulosic Food Industry Waste: Challenges And Opportunities, Amit Jaiswal, Rajeev Ravindran
Articles
Lignocellulose is a generic term used to describe plant biomass. It is the most abundant renewable carbon resource in the world and is mainly composed of lignin, cellulose and hemicelluloses. Most of the food and food processing industry waste are lignocellulosic in nature with a global estimate of up to 1.3 billion tons/year. Lignocellulose, on hydrolysis, releases reducing sugars which is used for the production of bioethanol, biogas, organic acids, enzymes and biosorbents. However, structural conformation, high lignin content and crystalline cellulose hinder its use for value addition. Pre-treatment strategies facilitate the exposure of more cellulose and hemicelluloses for enzymatic …

State dining has been shown to define the social, cultural and political position of a nation’s leaders (Albala, 2011; Baughman, 1959; Strong, 2003) and has been used by rulers for centuries to display wealth, cement alliances and impress foreign visitors (Albala, 2007; De Vooght and Scholliers, 2011; Young, 2002). This paper will show how the state banquet for Queen Elizabeth II was carefully curated to represent Ireland’s diplomatic, cultural and culinary identity. As the first visit by a reigning British monarch since Ireland had gained independence from Britain in 1922, the state visit of Queen Elizabeth II to Ireland in …

Peer Victimization And Drd4 Genotype Influence Problem Behaviors In Young Children, Lisabeth Fisher Dilalla, Kyle Bersted, Sufna Gheyara John
Articles
Decades of research supports the presence of significant genetic influences on children’s internalizing (emotional), externalizing (acting out), and social difficulties, including victimization. Additionally, being victimized has been shown to relate to further behavioral problems. The current study assessed the nature of the gene-environment relationships between the DRD4 gene, peer victimization, and externalizing and internalizing difficulties in 6- to 10-year- old children. 174 children (56% girls; 88.6% Caucasian, 3.4% African American, 8% mixed race or Mayan) and their parents were administered victimization and problem behavior questionnaires, and DRD4 was genotyped for the children. An interaction between genes (DRD4) and environment (victimization) …

A Simple Polarization Reconfigurable Printed Monopole Antenna, Afshin Panahi, Xiulong Bao, Kansheng Yang, Oisin O'Conchubhair, Max Ammann
Articles
A simple polarization reconfigurable printed monopole antenna is proposed for wireless applications. Conducting strips are used to connect to the ground plane providing the necessary additional modes for circular-polarization. Linear-polarization, right hand or left hand circular-polarization can be realized using only two PIN diodes, which connect to the ground plane, minimizing their effect on radiation characteristics. The mechanism is described, and key antenna parameters are studied and optimized. The antenna is prototyped and tested for all polarization configurations.

Barium titanate (BaTiO3, BT), which has a high dielectric constant was used as the filler in silicone rubber (SR) based DE composites. The BT was added in order to achieve higher voltage-induced strains and decrease the magnitude of the applied electric fields. The morphology of SR/BT composites was observed using a scanning electron microscope (SEM). The mechanical property of the SR/BT composites, which was characterized by an equi-biaxial static test, was obtained using a bubble inflation test system. Significantly, an optimum equi-biaxial pre-stretch ratio was determined using this method in order to enhance the actuated strain achieved under an applied …

The remarkable achievement by Fujishima and Honda (1972) in the photo-electrochemical water splitting results in the extensive use of TiO2 nanomaterials for environmental purification and energy storage/conversion applications. Though there are many advantages for the TiO2 compared to other semiconductor photocatalysts, its band gap of 3.2 eV restrains application to the UV-region of the electromagnetic spectrum ≤387.5 nm. As a result, development of visible-light active titanium dioxide is one of the key challenges in the field of semiconductor photocatalysis. In this review, advances in the strategies for the visible light activation, origin of visible-light activity, and electronic structure of various …

Environmental health concerns over conventional chromium based surface treatments on aluminium substrates are well known. Current research efforts have concentrated on developing protective technologies for multiple applications. Such properties would enable manufacturers to address both corrosion and bacterial threats in areas such as fuel tanks and delivery systems.
The present study explores the anticorrosion properties of 1,2-dihydro 1, 2, 4, 5 tetrazine-3, 6-dicarboxylic acid (H2DCTZ) on a copper rich aerospace aluminium alloy (AA 2024-T3). Furthermore the antimicrobial activity of the tetrazine is evaluated against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, both capable of inducing corrosion. The protective action of the …

A compact ultrawideband (UWB) circularly polarized (CP) slot antenna is proposed with a methodology for automated reoptimization for packaging with proprietary devices. The slot structure employs a dual-feed with an integrated compact UWB phase shifter. The design process involves an advanced optimization algorithm and demonstrates the use of spline curves for generation of CP signals. These allow easy optimization, while preserving phase coherency across a wideband. The prototyped antennahas a CP bandwidth of 54% (from 3.2 to 6.1 GHz).

Numerical Analysis Of Bubble Dynamics In Electrohydraulic And Electromagnetic Shock Wave Lithotripsy, Jun Qin
Articles
This study numerically investigated the bubble dynamics in electrohydraulic (EH) and electromagnetic (EM) shock wave lithotripsy (SWL). The acoustic pressure generated by a typical EH (i.e., Dornier HM-3) and EM (i.e., Siemens Modularis) lithotripters has been measured. The dynamics of cavitation bubbles in SWL has been numerically simulated using the Gilemore formulation coupled with zero-order gas diffusion. The pressure measurement results showed that both the peak positive and negative pressure of the Modularis at E4.0 are slightly higher than the corresponding values of the HM-3 at 20 kV. However, the pressure waveforms generated by an EH lithotripter is different from …

Energy consumption trends in residential and commercial buildings show a significant increase in recent decades. One of the key points for reducing energy consumption in buildings is to decrease the energy demand. Buildings envelopes are not just a structure they also provide protection from outdoor weather conditions always taking into account the local climate. Thermal energy storage has been used and applied to the building structure by taking advantage of sensible heat storage of materials with high thermal mass. But in recent years, researchers have focused their studies on the implementation of latent heat storage materials that if well incorporated …

Hydrologic response to rainfall on fragmented or burnt hillslopes is strongly influenced by the ensuing connectivity of runoff and erosion processes. Yet cross-scale process connectivity is seldom evaluated in field studies owing to scale limitations in experimental design. This study quantified surface susceptibility and hydrologic response across point to hillslope scales at two degraded unburnt and burnt woodland sites using rainfall simulation and hydrologic modelling. High runoff (31–47 mm) and erosion (154–1893 g m–2) measured at the patch scale (13 m2) were associated with accumulation of fine-scale (0.5-m2) splash-sheet runoff and sediment and concentrated …

Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIUC) and the University of Oregon each withdrew from several Big Deals with major commercial journal publishers from 2008 to 2010. Analysis of the impact of these decisions was originally conducted and reported in 2011 and 2012. This article provides updated analysis based on interlibrary loan statistics, financial savings, and impact on the collections. Results show that interlibrary loan of lost content still represents a small fraction of prior use, savings have been considerable, and the libraries have been able to address other needs in their collections because of the decision to withdraw.
