The Case For A More Rigorous Approach To Teaching Spreadsheet And Database Applications, M. Pamela Neely, Thoms Pray Jan 2007

The Case For A More Rigorous Approach To Teaching Spreadsheet And Database Applications, M. Pamela Neely, Thoms Pray

Articles

Although most schools offer and/or require a course in spreadsheet and database applications, the amount of meaningful learning derived from the class varies widely, due in part to a lack of rigor in adjunct instructor led classes. The approach described in this paper involves a combination of demonstration and hands-on practice using two term-long cases to be used in an introductory course in spreadsheet and database applications. These cases, packaged together with slides emphasizing theory, hands-on quizzes and exams that foster critical thinking, can be used across the multiple sections that are taught to maintain consistency within the course and …

Graph Reconstruction Numbers, Mcmullen Brian, Stanislaw Radziszowski Jan 2007

Graph Reconstruction Numbers, Mcmullen Brian, Stanislaw Radziszowski

Articles

Proposed in 1942, the Graph Reconstruction Conjecture posits that every simple, finite, undirected graph with three or more vertices can be reconstructed up to isomorphism to the original graph, given the multiset of subgraphs produced by deleting each vertex along with its incident edges. Related to this Reconstruction Conjecture, existential reconstruction numbers, 9rn(G), concern the minimum number of vertex-deleted subgraphs required to identify a graph up to isomorphism. We discuss the resulting data from calculating reconstruction numbers for all simple, undirected graphs with up to ten vertices. From this data, we establish the reasons behind all high existential reconstruction numbers …

How Do Psychology Researchers Find Studies To Include In Meta-Analyses?, Julie Arendt

Articles

Meta-analysis is a technique used in a variety of disciplines to combine and summarize the findings of previous research. One step in the production of a meta-analysis is a thorough literature search for relevant studies. A variety of methods can be used to increase the number of studies that are found. This study examines the extent to which some of these steps were taken in meta-analyses published in American Psychological Association in journals in 2004. Some techniques were applied in almost all of the meta-analyses, and other techniques were applied in few of the meta-analyses. Implications of these results for …

Subject Access Points In The Marc Record And Archival Finding Aid: Enough Or Too Many?, Elizabeth J. Cox, Leslie Czechowski

Articles

In this research project the authors set out to discover the current practice in both the archival and cataloging worlds for usage of access points in descriptive records and to learn how archival descriptive practices fit into long-established library cataloging procedures and practices. A sample of archival finding aids and MARC records at 123 Association of Research Libraries (ARL) institutions were examined to determine if finding aids and catalog records had the same or similar number of access points. The research also provided additional data regarding description of archival materials in these libraries.

Polarisation Dependence Of Bend Loss For A Standard Singlemode Fiber, Qian Wang, Ginu Rajan, Pengfei Wang, Gerald Farrell Jan 2007

Polarisation Dependence Of Bend Loss For A Standard Singlemode Fiber, Qian Wang, Ginu Rajan, Pengfei Wang, Gerald Farrell

Articles

Polarization dependence of bend loss caused by the polymer coating layer for a standard singlemode fiber (SMF28) is investigated theoretically and experimentally. Bend loss for SMF28 for both the TE and TM mode is calculated separately. Normalized polarization dependent loss is proposed for the characterization of the polarization sensitivity of bend loss for different bend radii. Corresponding experimental tests are presented, which agree with the theoretical results. Both the theoretical and experimental results show that the polymer coating layer has a significant influence on the polarization dependence of bend loss.

Contagious Efficiency: The Growing Reliance On U.S.-Style Antitrust Settlements In Eu Law, George S. Georgiev Jan 2007

Contagious Efficiency: The Growing Reliance On U.S.-Style Antitrust Settlements In Eu Law, George S. Georgiev

Articles

This Article analyzes the impact of the introduction of U.S.-style antitrust settlement procedures in EU law, which occurred in 2004 as part of an ambitious antitrust modernisation program. After documenting the lack of a settlement tradition in the EU legal system or the legal systems of EU member states, I argue that the new procedures were transplanted from U.S. law and that this was done without sufficient tailoring. Relying on lessons from the longstanding U.S. experience with antitrust settlements and on emerging evidence about the EU's own approach since 2004, I analyze the effects from the introduction of settlements at …

Investigation Of Macrobending Losses Of Standard Single Mode Fiber With Small Bend Radii, Pengfei Wang, Qiang Wu, Gerald Farrell, Ginu Rajan, Thomas Freir, John Cassidy Jan 2007

Investigation Of Macrobending Losses Of Standard Single Mode Fiber With Small Bend Radii, Pengfei Wang, Qiang Wu, Gerald Farrell, Ginu Rajan, Thomas Freir, John Cassidy

Articles

An investigation of macrobending loss characteristics of a standard singlemode fiber (SMF28) for small bend radii is presented theoretically and experimentally, which includes the bend loss of the SMF28 with coating layers and the bare SMF28 after stripping the coating layers and chemical etching of partial cladding. The significant influence of reflection occurring at the interface between the cladding and coating layer or the cladding layer and air on the bend loss is investigated theoretically and experimentally.

Cost-Benefit Analysis Without Analyzing Costs Of Benefits: Reasonable Accommodation, Balancing, And Stigmatic Harms, Cass R. Sunstein Jan 2007

Cost-Benefit Analysis Without Analyzing Costs Of Benefits: Reasonable Accommodation, Balancing, And Stigmatic Harms, Cass R. Sunstein

Articles

Is an accommodation "reasonable" under the Americans with Disabilities Act if and only if the benefits are roughly proportional to the costs? How should benefits and costs be assessed? Should courts ask how much disabled employees are willing to pay to obtain the accommodation, or instead how much they would have to be paid to forego the accommodation? How should stigmatic or expressive harms be valued? This Essay, written for a celebration of the work of Judge Richard A. Posner, engages these questions in a discussion of an important opinion in which Judge Posner denied accommodations involving the lowering of …

Due Process Traditionalism, Cass R. Sunstein Jan 2007

Due Process Traditionalism, Cass R. Sunstein

Articles

In important cases, the Supreme Court has limited the scope of "substantive due process" by reference to tradition, but it has yet to explain why it has done so. Due process traditionalism might be defended in several distinctive ways. The most ambitious defense draws on a set of ideas associated with Edmund Burke and Friedrich Hayek, who suggested that traditions have special credentials by virtue of their acceptance by many minds. But this defense runs into three problems. Those who have participated in a tradition may not have accepted any relevant proposition; they might suffer from a systematic bias; and …

World Vs. The United States And China - The Complex Climate Change Incentives Of The Leading Greenhouse Gas Emitters, The, Cass R. Sunstein

Articles

It is generally agreed that the world would be better off with an international agreement to control greenhouse gas emissions. But it is not entirely clear that the leading emitters-the United States and China-would be better off with the agreement that would be in the world's interest. The first problem is that as the largest emitters, the United States and China would probably have to bear a disproportionate cost of any significant emissions reduction effort. The second problem is that on prominent projections, the United States and China are unlikely to be the most serious losers from climate change. According …

Backlash's Travels, Cass R. Sunstein Jan 2007

Backlash's Travels, Cass R. Sunstein

Articles

Sometimes the public greatly opposes the decisions of the Supreme Court; sometimes the Court seems to anticipate public backlash and even to respond to it when it occurs. Should a social planner want the Court to anticipate or to respond to backlash? No abstract answer is possible; the appropriate conclusion depends on assumptions about the capacities of courts and the capacities of those who engage in backlash. This point is demonstrated through an exploration of four imaginable worlds: Olympus, the Land of the Ancients, Lochnerland, and Athens. The four worlds are based on radically different assumptions about judicial and public …
