Patterns Of Drinking Among The Deaf, Morton Isaacs, Gerard Buckley, Donna Martin Jan 1979

Patterns Of Drinking Among The Deaf, Morton Isaacs, Gerard Buckley, Donna Martin

Articles

Thirty-nine White deaf persons functioning normally within the general hearing community were surveyed on a variety of factors concerning their use of alcohol, and compared to the data from two comparable hearing samples reported previously in the literature. No significant differences were found between the deaf and heharing samples on patterns of drinking or other parameters of alcohol use. Heavier alcohol use among the deaf correlated significantly with reported frequency of driving after having drunk too much, age of having had first drink, ever having been drunk, feeling guilt over drinking too much, and others criticizing the respondent for drinking …

A Hard Look At Vermont Yankee: Environmental Law Under Close Scrutiny, William H. Rodgers, Jr. Jan 1979

A Hard Look At Vermont Yankee: Environmental Law Under Close Scrutiny, William H. Rodgers, Jr.

Articles

In Vermont Yankee Nuclear Power Corp. v. Natural Resources Defense Council, Inc. the Supreme Court unanimously reversed the District of Columbia Circuit in two cases that closely scrutinized decisions of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and, in so doing, questioned settled habits of judicial review of administrative action affecting the environment. In this article Professor Rodgers analyzes four implications of Vermont Yankee—substantive judicial review under the National Environmental Policy Act, judicial imposition of procedures upon agencies beyond the statutory minima of the Administrative Procedure Act, the obligation of the agencies to consider alternatives in the environmental impact statement without regard to …

Assessment Of Regional Myocardial Blood Flow And Regional Fractional Oxygen Extraction In Dogs, Using 15o-Water And 15o-Hemoglobin, J. Anthony Parker, George Beller, Bernard Hoop Jan 1978

Assessment Of Regional Myocardial Blood Flow And Regional Fractional Oxygen Extraction In Dogs, Using 15o-Water And 15o-Hemoglobin, J. Anthony Parker, George Beller, Bernard Hoop

Articles

A new approach to the assessment of regional myocardial blood flow and fractional oxygen extraction has been developed using 15O-water (H2- 15O) and 15O-hemoglobin (15O-Hb). Bolus doses (1 mCi) of H2-15O and 15O- Hb were injected 10 minutes apart into the left main coronary artery of 12 normal dogs. Sequential images of regional myocardial tracer clearance were obtained over 5 minutes with a positron camera. Myocardial blood flow calculated from the monoexponential washout of H2- 15O after background correction was 78 +/- 6 (SE) ml/100 g per min. Functional images of regional blood flow in which the image of peak …

Streak, Strip And Scanning Photographic Systems - An Overview Of Historical And Current Technologies, Andrew Davidhazy

Articles

A manuscript that was started in 1978 was found in a pile of papers and is presented here "as is" after it was transformed into text using Optical Character Recognition software. This was to be, and still someday may be (maybe upon the author's retirement!), an overview of the many facets and applications of streak and strip cameras.

Predation By Birds On Great Southern White Butterflies As A Function Of Palatability, Sex, And Habitat, F. Harvey Pough, Lincoln Brower Jan 1977

Predation By Birds On Great Southern White Butterflies As A Function Of Palatability, Sex, And Habitat, F. Harvey Pough, Lincoln Brower

Articles

A natural population of Ascia monuste studied in Everglades National Park in January 1970 was subjected to intense attack by birds. Of 697 individuals examined, 22.8% had been caught at least once by a bird. Predation intensity was greater in an open habitat (26.8%) than in a wooded one (14.4%). In laboratory experiments female A. monuste are significantly less palatable to blue jays than males and consequently should be better protected against birds. Contrary to expectation, there was no difference in the incidence of beak marks on males and females in the sample of wild butterflies. Wild females may have …

Glycosyltransferase Activity In Developing Sea-Urchin Embryos, Irene Evans, H. Bruce Bosmann Jan 1977

Glycosyltransferase Activity In Developing Sea-Urchin Embryos, Irene Evans, H. Bruce Bosmann

Articles

The developmental course of activity changes of 4 endogenous membrane glycosyltransferases: UDP-glucose : glycosyltrasferase, UDP-galactose : glycosyltransferase, GDP-mannose: glycosyltransferase, and UD-PN-acetylglucosamine : glycosyltransferase was determined in various stages of developing sea-urchin embryos from unfertilized eggs up to the 16-cell stage. The results show that there is a 2-fold increase in glycosyltransferase activity after fertilization. These results are discussed in relation to the postulated role of glycosyltransferases in mediating adhesion, recognition, and agglutination of cells and embryos.

Video Detection And Tracking Of Tracer Particles In A Model Packed-Bed Reactor, Jerry Stephenson, James Wiedenhoeft, James Vallino Jan 1977

Video Detection And Tracking Of Tracer Particles In A Model Packed-Bed Reactor, Jerry Stephenson, James Wiedenhoeft, James Vallino

Articles

A video detection and tracking system was devised to track and record the position versus time of tracer particles moving through a transparent medium. The system was applied to studying the flow-related transport phenomena at all points within packed-bed reactors since the previously proposed mathematical models for describing them have not been proven adequate throughout the entire packed-bed. A modified TV camera was used to obtain a video presentation of the motion of a highly reflective particle in an otherwise transparent bed. A microcomputer was then used to process the video signal, using the vertical and horizontal sync pulses as …

Fred E. Inbau: 'The Importance Of Being Guilty', Yale Kamisar

Articles

As fate would have it, Fred Inbau graduated from law school in 1932, the very year that, "for practical purposes the modern law of constitutional criminal procedure [began], with the decision in the great case of Powell v. Alabama."1 In "the 'stone age' of American criminal procedure,"2 Inbau began his long fight to shape or to retain rules that "make sense in the light of a policeman's task,"3 more aware than most that so long as the rules do so, "we will be in a stronger position to insist that [the officer] obey them."4

A Protein Factor Required For Activation Of Phosphoenolpyruvate Carboxykinase By Ferrous Ions, Larry Bentle, Roy Snoke, Henry Lardy Jan 1976

A Protein Factor Required For Activation Of Phosphoenolpyruvate Carboxykinase By Ferrous Ions, Larry Bentle, Roy Snoke, Henry Lardy

Articles

When rat liver cytosolic P-enolpyruvate carboxykinase is purified, its activity is no longer enhanced by incubation with 30 muM Fe2+. Ferrous ion stimulation of the purified enzyme is restored by the addition of rat liver cytosol. The agent responsible is a cytosolic protein, named P-enolpyruvate carboxykinase ferroactivator, that was readily separated from the enzyme during purification of the latter. A quantitative assay for P-enolpyruvate carboxykinase ferroactivator is described. Subcellular fractionation of livers from fasted rats shows that 98% of the combined mitochondrial and cytosolic P-enolpyruvate carboxykinase ferroactivator activity resides in the cytosol. Fasting does not produce significant change in this …

Accumulation Of The Capacity Of Initiation Of Deoxyribonucleic Acid Replication In Escherichia Coli, Irene Evans, Helen Eberle Jan 1975

Accumulation Of The Capacity Of Initiation Of Deoxyribonucleic Acid Replication In Escherichia Coli, Irene Evans, Helen Eberle

Articles

Several temperature-sensitive initiation mutants of Escherichia coli were examined for the ability to initiate more than one round of replication after being held at nonpermissive temperature for approximately 1.5 generation equivalents. The capacity for initiation was measured by residual synthesis experiments and rate experiments under conditions where protein synthesis and ribonucleic acid synthesis were inhibited. Results of the rate and density transfer experiments suggest that the cells may initiate more than one round of replication in the absence of protein or ribonucleic acid synthesis. This contrasts with the results of the residual synthesis experiments which suggest that, under these conditions, …

Racial Preferences In Higher Education: Political Responsibility And The Judicial Role, Terrance Sandalow Jan 1975

Racial Preferences In Higher Education: Political Responsibility And The Judicial Role, Terrance Sandalow

Articles

Controversy continues unabated over the question left unresolved by DeFunis v. Odegaard: whether in its admissions process a state law school may accord preferential treatment to certain racial and ethnic minorities. In the pages of two journals published by the University of Chicago, Professors John Hart Ely and Richard Posner have established diametrically opposed positions in the debate. Their contributions are of special interest because each undertakes to answer the question within the framework of a theory concerning the proper distribution of authority between the judiciary and the other institutions of government. Neither position, in my judgment, adequately confronts the …

The Realities Of Prisoners' Cases Under 42 U.S.C. § 1983: A Statistical Survey In The Northern District Of Illinois, William S. Bailey

Articles

The purpose of this article is to examine how prisoner section 1983 claims are treated, on a day to day basis, in the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois. To this end, all of the available prisoner section 1983 cases filed in the Northern District of Illinois Eastern Division in the years 1971 and 1973 have been reviewed. This material provides the data base for an analysis of the following issues: the veracity of the burden on the courts argument; the variations in the level of consideration given to different categories of prisoner section 1983 claims; …
