Culinary Voices: Perspectives From Dublin Restaurants, Máirtín Mac Con Iomaire Apr 2011

Culinary Voices: Perspectives From Dublin Restaurants, Máirtín Mac Con Iomaire

Articles

Despite growing interest in culinary history and gastronomy in the last three decades, the use of oral history within the culinary field remains in an embryonic stage. By discussing the strength of oral history, particularly when triangulated with other sources, and surveying some food related projects, the article focuses on the power of oral history to capture the life experiences of chefs, waiters, restaurateurs and diners. The article calls on curators of culinary libraries to build oral history archives which can be accessed electronically.

Generational Stages In Family Firms: Expanding The Database - Kosovo, Matthew C. Sonfield, Robert N. Lussier, Robert J. Barbato Apr 2011

Generational Stages In Family Firms: Expanding The Database - Kosovo, Matthew C. Sonfield, Robert N. Lussier, Robert J. Barbato

Articles

Expanding the authors’ international database of family businesses, this investigation compared first, second and third-generation family businesses in a sample from Kosovo. Both supporting and challenging the existing literature, the findings indicate that, as family businesses move from first to second to third generation, almost all managerial characteristics, activities and practices remain the same. Implications are presented for theory development, for further research, and for those who manage or advise family businesses.

Discussion Of Parabolic Mask For Cumulative Sum Control Charts, Donald Holmes, A. Erhan Mergen

Articles

In this paper we will discuss the use of parabolic control limits for cumulative sum (Cusum) control charts and an approach to correct the average run length (ARL) problem that may result from using a "three sigma" parabolic mask. Result of a simulation study will be reported to correct this problem.

Stochastic Hybrid Embodied Co2-Eq Analysis: An Application To The Irish Apartment Building Sector, Adolf Acquaye, Aidan Duffy, Biswajit Basu Apr 2011

Stochastic Hybrid Embodied Co2-Eq Analysis: An Application To The Irish Apartment Building Sector, Adolf Acquaye, Aidan Duffy, Biswajit Basu

Articles

Although embodiedCO2-eq analysis has seen recent developments as evident in the establishment of the ISO14040 and 14044 LCA standards, it is recognized that due to weaknesses in gathering data on product-related emissions,embodiedCO2-eq values are probabilistic. This paper presents a stochastic analysis of hybrid embodied CO2-eq in buildings to account for this weakness in traditional methods and, by way of example, applies it to an Irish construction-sector case study. Using seven apartment buildings, 70,000 results are simulated with Monte Carlo analysis and used to derive probabilistic and cumulative embodied CO2-eq intensity distributions for apartment buildings in Ireland. A Wakeby distribution with …

Development And Characterisation Of Integrated Microfluidics On Waveguide-Based Photonic Platforms Fabricated From Hybrid Materials, Robert Copperwhite, Mary O'Sullivan, Catherine Boothman, Arnaud Gorin, Colette Mcdonagh, Mohamed Oubaha Mar 2011

Development And Characterisation Of Integrated Microfluidics On Waveguide-Based Photonic Platforms Fabricated From Hybrid Materials, Robert Copperwhite, Mary O'Sullivan, Catherine Boothman, Arnaud Gorin, Colette Mcdonagh, Mohamed Oubaha

Articles

This article reports on a detailed investigation of sol–gel processed hybrid organic–inorganic materials for use in lab-on-a-chip (LoC) applications. A particular focus on this research was the implementation of integrated microfluidic circuitry in waveguide-based photonic sensing platforms. This objective is not possible using other fabrication technologies that are typically used for microfluidic platforms. Significant results on the surface characterisation of hybrid sol–gel processed materials have been obtained which highlight the ability to tune the hydrophilicity of the materials by careful adjustment of material constituents and processing conditions. A proof-of-principle microfluidic platform was designed and a fabrication process was established which …

Impact Of Technostress On End-User Satisfaction And Performance, Monideepa Tarafdar, Qiang Tu, T. Ragu-Nathan Mar 2011

Impact Of Technostress On End-User Satisfaction And Performance, Monideepa Tarafdar, Qiang Tu, T. Ragu-Nathan

Articles

Organizational use of information and communications technologies (ICT) is increasingly resulting in negative cognitions in individuals, such as information overload and interruptions. Recent literature has encapsulated these cognitions in the concept of technostress, which is stress caused by an inability to cope with the demands of organizational computer usage. Given the critical role of the user in organizational information processing and accomplishing application-enabled workflows, understanding how these cognitions affect users’ satisfaction with ICT and their performance in ICT-mediated tasks is an important step in appropriating benefits from current computing environments. The objective of this paper is to (1) understand the …

Buying From Secondary Markets: Acquiring Dollars And Sense, Julie Mosbo, John Ballestro Mar 2011

Buying From Secondary Markets: Acquiring Dollars And Sense, Julie Mosbo, John Ballestro

Articles

Between 2004 and 2008, Morris Library’s monographic budget was reduced by over $400,000 representing a fifty percent reduc- tion. The increase in serial prices forced the shifting of monograph funds to the serials budget. Despite this shift, the increase in serials costs, combined with an otherwise flat budget, resulted in two serials’ cancellation projects in a span of four years.

Faced with these economic realities, the acquisitions unit at Southern Illinois University’s Morris Library has sought alternative schemas to save money. One decision was to consider purchas- ing materials from secondary and used-book sources. For fiscal year 2009, a database …

Articles

This article situates the artistic development of the Greek-Cypriot artist Criton Tomazos (b.1940) as a part of a circle of artists in the 1960s loosely associated around a number of informal groupings, including Arts Together, Writers Forum, Sigma, Group H and Environmental Forum. It examines the context for a number of his key works including The Cage on the basis of a literature review and interviews conducted with Criton Tomazos. The article concludes that Criton Tomazos made a significant contribution to the Undergound art movement in London in the 1960s.

The Validity And Effectiveness Of A Business Game Beta Test, Steven Gold, Joseph Wolfe Jan 2011

The Validity And Effectiveness Of A Business Game Beta Test, Steven Gold, Joseph Wolfe

Articles

New gaming software must undergo a series of tests before its general release. The objective of these tests is to ensure that the simulation is appropriate for its intended audience, plays well, possesses the requisite level of fidelity to the system being modeled, and is free from programming errors. This article first catalogs the design parameters associated with a good beta test. It then compares this ideal against the beta test created for a first-generation online business game released by a major online game publisher. It then examines the actual behaviors and results produced by the study’s beta testers to …

Ethical Implications Of Social Stratification In Information Systems Research, Nicholas Berente, Uri Gal, Sean Hansen Jan 2011

Ethical Implications Of Social Stratification In Information Systems Research, Nicholas Berente, Uri Gal, Sean Hansen

Articles

When investigating the use of information systems within organizations, researchers inevitably make decisions relating to the classification, or ‘stratification’, of information technology users. Most commonly, users are stratified along functional boundaries or by their membership in various communities of practice. It is important to note, however, that any such method of social stratification necessarily focuses the attention of a researcher on certain issues while unavoidably downplaying or neglecting other concerns. Individuals whose interests, values or identification align with these neglected issues may be inadvertently marginalized by the research approach. This observation suggests a range of ethical concerns related to the …

The Relationship Of Integration And Automation Under An Uncertain Environment: A Sem Model, Qiang Tu, Kun Liao, Yulong Li Jan 2011

The Relationship Of Integration And Automation Under An Uncertain Environment: A Sem Model, Qiang Tu, Kun Liao, Yulong Li

Articles

Under a uncertain environment (i.e., growing global competition, changing customer demand, shorter product life cycles, and increasing market diversity), two manufacturing strategies often emerge: manufacturing technology automation and manufacturing system integration. Existing case studies indicate that firms should adapt manufacturing integration first and then automate the manufacturing system to improve manufacturing performance. Using 288 responses from manufacturing managers, the findings of this study empirically supports this proposition. Analytical results also show that the combination strategies of manufacturing system integration followed by manufacturing technology automation have more than twice the effect on manufacturing performance than using manufacturing automation strategy alone.

Innovation And Ngos, Stephen Luxmore, Clyde Hull Jan 2011

Innovation And Ngos, Stephen Luxmore, Clyde Hull

Articles

Innovations that antagonize non-governmental organizations (NGOs) will face significantly greater challenges than those that do not. The impact of non-governmental organizations on the commercialization of new technology is evolving from the more traditional indirect approach of lobbying governments. The new NGO approach is to pursue private politics, in which the NGO seeks to exert direct influence over entrepreneurial companies that commercialize radical new technology. The authors use the industry study approach to explore how this new NGO role affects innovation. They present a theoretical framework that encompasses the emerging role of NGOs and set out the practical managerial implications that …

The Leadership Quarterly: An International Journal Of Political, Social And Behavioral Science, Michael Palanski, Francis Yammarino

Articles

Although a leader's integrity seems to be essential for effective leadership, no empirical studies have examined the relationship between leader behavioral integrity (the consistency between words and actions) and follower job performance. Further, no empirical studies have examined how follower behavioral integrity might also impact job performance. Using data from three studies, we addressed these issues by testing the effects of leader and follower behavioral integrity on follower job performance. Study 1 was an online experiment in which behavioral integrity was manipulated in written scenarios; Study 2 was a field study; and Study 3 was a longitudinal lab study with …

Producing Governable Subjects: Images Of Childhood Old And New, Karen Smith Jan 2011

Producing Governable Subjects: Images Of Childhood Old And New, Karen Smith

Articles

Conceptions of childhood in terms of ‘evil’ and ‘innocence’ transcend time and culture. These conflicting images are deployed by Chris Jenks as the Dionysian and Apollonian models of childhood to symbolize external and internal forms of control. Drawing on the literature on governmentality this paper revisits these models and introduces a third model, the ‘Athenian’ child, analogous and supplementary to those developed by Jenks. This model is necessary in order to take account of relatively recent strategies in the government of childhood, which, predicated on understandings of children in terms of competence and agency, operate via responsibility and reflexivity.

Not Seeing The Joke: The Overlooked Role Of Humour In Researching Television Production, Edward Brennan Jan 2011

Not Seeing The Joke: The Overlooked Role Of Humour In Researching Television Production, Edward Brennan

Articles

This article argues that humour can provide researchers with a unique access point into the professional cultures of media producers. By reconsidering an earlier case study, and reviewing relevant literature, it illustrates how humour can fulfil several functions in media production. Importantly, humour is a central means of performing the ‘emotional labour’ that increasingly precarious media work demands. For production research, the everyday joking and banter of media workers can provide an important and, heretofore, overlooked means of accessing culture, meaning, consensus and conflict in media organizations. The article argues that humour’s organizational role should be considered as a sensitizing …

Towards A Decision Making Model For City Break Travel, Gerard Dunne, Sheila Flanagan, Joan Buckley

Articles

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to examine the city break travel decision and in particular to develop a decision making model that reflects the characteristics of this type of trip taking.

Method

The research follows a sequential mixed methods approach consisting of two phases. Phase One involves a quantitative survey of 1,000 visitors to Dublin, from which city break and non city break visitor cohorts are separated and compared. Phase Two entails a qualitative analysis (involving 40 in-depth interviews) that specifically examines the decision making behaviour of city break visitors.

Findings

City break trips were shown to be …

He left quite a legacy on the Eastern Shore. This project highlights his ministry in the Virginia section of the Eastern Shore, and profiles the history and current ministry of the churches that he was directly responsible for planting.

Rule Of Law For Whom? Strengthening Rule Of Law As A Solution To Sexual Violence In The Democratic Republic Of Congo, Ryan S. Lincoln Jan 2011

Rule Of Law For Whom? Strengthening Rule Of Law As A Solution To Sexual Violence In The Democratic Republic Of Congo, Ryan S. Lincoln

Articles

This article suggests that programs designed to strengthen the rule of law in general are unlikely to be effective against the widespread problem of sexual violence in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. I argue that while weak rule of law perpetuates sexual violence, only rule of law programs designed specifically with respect to the needs, risks, and cultural norms pertaining to Congolese women can help curb this problem. The article begins with a brief history of conflict in the Great Lakes region of Africa to provide context for a discussion of the scope of sexual violence in the eastern …

The Evolutionary Biology Of Fungi And Fraud, Wendy Gerwick Couture Jan 2011

The Evolutionary Biology Of Fungi And Fraud, Wendy Gerwick Couture

Articles

In this Article, the authors-a law professor and a biologist-offer a fresh perspective on the use of broad federal fraud statutes to combat fraud by drawing a comparison with the use of multi-site fungicides to combat plant disease. Multi-site fungicides are effective at preventing the evolution of resistant strains of fungi, but they are subject to increased regulatory scrutiny amid concerns about off-target toxicity. Similarly, broad fraud statutes serve as a stopgap to prevent the evolution of new types of fraud, but they are widely criticized as unduly vague and as interfering with the operation of specific fraud statutes. Biologists' …

Investigation Of Singlemode-Multimode-Singlemode And Singlemode-Tapered Multitmode-Singlemode Fibre Structures And Their Application For Refractive Index Sensing, Pengfei Wang, Gilberto Brambilla, Ming Ding, Yuliya Semenova, Qiang Wu, Gerald Farrell Jan 2011

Investigation Of Singlemode-Multimode-Singlemode And Singlemode-Tapered Multitmode-Singlemode Fibre Structures And Their Application For Refractive Index Sensing, Pengfei Wang, Gilberto Brambilla, Ming Ding, Yuliya Semenova, Qiang Wu, Gerald Farrell

Articles

All-fiber in-line single-mode–multimode–single-mode (SMS) and single-mode–tapered-multimode–single-mode (STMS) fiber structures are investigated. A wide-angle beam propagation method in cylindrical coordinates is developed and employed for numerical simulations of the light propagation performance of such fiber devices. The effect of strong mode interference on the performance of the devices is studied and verified numerically; results indicate that the proposed STMS structure can be exploited for measuring a broad refractive index range with reasonable high resolution, compared with the conventional SMS structure.

Insider Trading And Ceo Pay, M. Todd Henderson Jan 2011

Insider Trading And Ceo Pay, M. Todd Henderson

Articles

This Article presents evidence showing that boards of directors "bargain" with executives about the profits they expect to make from trades in firm stock. The evidence suggests that executives whose trading freedom increased using Rule 10b5-1 trading plans experienced reductions in other forms of pay to offset the potential gains from trading. There are two potential benefits from trading-portfolio optimization and informed trading profits--and this Article allows us to isolate them. The data show that boards pay executives in a way that reflects the profits they are expected to earn from informed trades. It also casts some doubt on the …

Damages For Unlicensed Use, Omri Ben-Shahar Jan 2011

Damages For Unlicensed Use, Omri Ben-Shahar

Articles

This Article investigates the distinction between breach of license and infringement of property rights and how damages ought to be measured for each. It identifies two remedial puzzles. First, under current law the line between breach of a license contract and infringement of a property right is murky, and thus minor differences between violations could lead to major differences in damage measures. Second, damages for infringement are augmented in a subtle but distortive way by giving owners an option to choose between the greater of two computation measures, each based on different information. The Article argues that these existing remedial …
