Simple Versatile Shearing Interferometer Suitable For Measurements On A Microscopic Scale, Emilia Mihaylova, Vincent Toal Jan 2009

Simple Versatile Shearing Interferometer Suitable For Measurements On A Microscopic Scale, Emilia Mihaylova, Vincent Toal

Articles

Microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) behave differently from massive samples. Conventional testing and inspection techniques usually fail at the microscale. Recently there has been an increasing interest in the application of optical techniques for microstructure testing, because they are high-resolution, non-contact, full-field, fast and relatively inexpensive. New interferometric systems, which are suitable for microscopic optical metrology, are of interest for engineering and industrial applications. A modified electronic speckle pattern shearing interferometer (ESPSI) with a very simple shearing device has been designed for metrology applications on the microscale. The shearing device consists of two partially reflective glass plates. The reflection coefficients of the …

A Revaluation Of Cy Press Redux, Alberto B. Lopez Jan 2009

A Revaluation Of Cy Press Redux, Alberto B. Lopez

Articles

With its enactment in 2, Section 413 of the Uniform Trust Code (UTC) introduced the most recent, and important, revision to a court's cy pres power since the nineteenth century. Section 413 expands the court's power to redistribute the assets of failing charitable trusts by transforming one of the traditional elements of cy pres into a presumption, abandoning the traditional cy pres redistribution standard, and providing an additional justification for the exercise of the power. Although scholars have scrutinized other portions of the UTC, the UTC's reconfigured cy pres has failed to provoke scholarly discussion even though it has been …

On The Approximability Of Dodgson And Young Elections, Ioannis Caragiannis, Jason Covey, Michal Feldman, Christopher Homan, Christos Kaklamanis, Nikos Karanikolas, Ariel D. Procaccia, Jeffrey S. Rosenschein

Articles

The voting rules proposed by Dodgson and Young are both designed to nd the alternative closest to being a Condorcet winner, according to two di erent notions of proximity; the score of a given alternative is known to be hard to compute under either rule. In this paper, we put forward two algorithms for ap- proximating the Dodgson score: an LP-based randomized rounding algorithm and a deterministic greedy algorithm, both of which yield an O(logm) approximation ratio, where m is the number of alternatives; we observe that this result is asymptotically optimal, and further prove that our greedy algorithm is …

Identifying Layout Classes For Mathematical Symbols Using Layout Context, Ling Ouyang, Richard Zanibbi Jan 2009

Identifying Layout Classes For Mathematical Symbols Using Layout Context, Ling Ouyang, Richard Zanibbi

Articles

We describe a symbol classification technique for identifying the expected locations of neighboring symbols in mathematical expressions. We use the seven symbol layout classes of the DRACULAE math notation parser (Zanibbi, Blostein, and Cordy, 2002) to represent expected locations for neighboring symbols: Ascender, Descender, Centered, Open Bracket, Non-Script, Variable Range (e.g. integrals) and Square Root. A new feature based on shape contexts (Belongie et al., 2002) named layout context is used to describe the arrangement of neighboring symbol bounding boxes relative to a reference symbol, and the nearest neighbor rule is used for classification. 1917 mathematical symbols from the University …

Bayesian Computation Of The Intrinsic Structure Of Factor Analytic Models, Ernest Fokoue Jan 2009

Bayesian Computation Of The Intrinsic Structure Of Factor Analytic Models, Ernest Fokoue

Articles

The study of factor analytic models often has to address two important issues: (a) the determination of the “optimum” number of factors and (b) the derivation of a unique simple structure whose interpretation is easy and straightforward. The classical approach deals with these two tasks separately, and sometimes resorts to ad-hoc methods. This paper proposes a Bayesian approach to these two important issues, and adapts ideas from stochastic geometry and Bayesian finite mixture modelling to construct an ergodic Markov chain having the posterior distribution of the complete collection of parameters (including the number of factors) as its equilibrium distribution. The …

Are "Better" Security Breach Notification Laws Possible?, Jane K. Winn Jan 2009

Are "Better" Security Breach Notification Laws Possible?, Jane K. Winn

Articles

This Article will evaluate the provisions of California's pioneering security breach notification law (SBNL) in light of "better regulation" or "smart regulation" criteria in order to highlight the costs of taking a narrowly focused, piecemeal approach and the benefits of taking a more comprehensive perspective to the problems of identity theft and information security. Just as the basic structure of SBNLs was borrowed from environmental law, this Article will borrow from decades of analysis of the impact of environmental regulation to evaluate the likely impact of SBNLs.

Just as environmental laws can be used to reduce externalities created through the …

Spectroscopic Study Of The Dimerisation Process Of Iron Protoporphyrin Ix, K. Dziedzic-Kocurek, Hugh Byrne, A. Swiderski, J. Stanek

Articles

The commercial protoporphyrin IX, iron-ferriprotoporphyrin IX-chloride and synthesized iron porphyrin μ-oxo-dimers were examined by UV/vis absorption and fluorescence, Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy, resonance Raman, X-ray absorption, Mössbauer spectroscopy and SQUID. The evidence of Fe-O-Fe antiferromagnetic coupling concluded from SQUID and Mössbauer in the case of samples containing dimerized forms confirmed the presence of the oxo-bridges. In this paper the results of UV/vis, fluorescence, Fourier transform infrared FTIR and Raman spectroscopies are reported and discussed. The study is based on the comparison of the free-base protoporphyrin IX, Fe-PPIX-Cl and the synthesized dimerized specimen. The vibrational modes in two energy regions i.e. …

Research into renewable energy sources has previously lacked sufficient investment. However, emphasis has now shifted and funding is being made available in a proactive manner by various governments eager to encourage renewable energy technology and reduce carbon taxes. Fuel Cells offer a realistic, sustainable and clean alternative energy option for stationary and mobile applications. Hydrogen and fuel cell technologies are recognised by many as possible long term energy solutions, but to-date, have failed to make an impact on the energy market. This is due to a number of key reasons, some of which include efficiency, scale, accessories and power output. …

Fuel Cells offer a realistic, sustainable and clean alternative energy option for stationary and mobile applications. Hydrogen and fuel cell technologies are recognised by many as possible long term energy solutions, but to-date have failed to make an impact on the energy market. This is due to a number of key reasons, some of which include, efficiency, scale, accessories and power output. Applying fuel cells to small telecommunication components requires the applications of Micro and Nanotechnology, which have yet to be perfected to make them long lasting and cost effective. This paper outlines the reasons for commercialisation of fuel cells …

Raman Spectroscopy: A Potential Platform For The Rapid Measurement Of Carbon Nanotube-Induced Cytotoxicity, Peter Knief, Colin Clarke, Eva Herzog, Maria Davoren, Fiona Lyng, Aidan Meade, Hugh Byrne Jan 2009

Raman Spectroscopy: A Potential Platform For The Rapid Measurement Of Carbon Nanotube-Induced Cytotoxicity, Peter Knief, Colin Clarke, Eva Herzog, Maria Davoren, Fiona Lyng, Aidan Meade, Hugh Byrne

Articles

In this study the suitability of Raman spectroscopy for the determination of carbon nanotube mediated toxicity on human alveolar carcinoma epithelial cells (A549) is explored. The exposure of this cell line represents the primary pathway of exposure in humans, that of inhalation. Peak ratio analysis demonstrates a dose dependent response which correlates to previous toxicological studies. Principal component analysis is employed to further classify cellular response as a function of dose and to examine differences between spectra as a function of exposed concentration. To further illustrate the potential of Raman spectroscopy in this field, Partial Least Squares (PLS) regression and …

On The Socles Of Characteristic Subgroups Of Abelian P-Groups, P. V. Danchev, Brendan Goldsmith Jan 2009

On The Socles Of Characteristic Subgroups Of Abelian P-Groups, P. V. Danchev, Brendan Goldsmith

Articles

Fully invariant subgroups of an Abelian p-group have been the object of a good deal of study, while characteristic subgroups have received somewhat less attention. Recently the socles of fully invariant subgroups have been studied and this led to the notion of a socle-regular group. The present work replaces the fully invariant subgroups with characteristic ones and leads in a natural way to the notion of a strongly socle-regular group. A surprising relationship, mirroring that between transitive and fully transitive groups, is obtained.

Providing Academic Leadership Through The Role Of Senior Lecturer 1 (Teaching) Using The Theme Of 'Sustainable Energy' As An Example, Jim Mcgovern

Articles

An academic leader should lead in their particular area and should love what they are doing. An example of leadership in the area of 'sustainable energy use' is presented that involves leading through identifying and participating in the development of emerging technologies. Excellent academic leadership can be provided by a Senior Lecturer through active research, incorporating the latest developments in student-centred learning in their work and providing example and encouragement for colleagues and learners.

Relating Fractal Dimension To Branching Behaviour In Filamentous Microorganisms, David Barry, Onwuarolu Ifeyinwa, Shauna Mcgee, Raymond Ryan, Gwilym Williams, Jonathan Blackledge Jan 2009

Relating Fractal Dimension To Branching Behaviour In Filamentous Microorganisms, David Barry, Onwuarolu Ifeyinwa, Shauna Mcgee, Raymond Ryan, Gwilym Williams, Jonathan Blackledge

Articles

The productivity of an industrial fermentation process involving a filamentous microbe is heavily dependent on the morphological form adopted by the organism. The development of systems capable of rapidly and accurately characterising morphology within a given process represents a significant challenge to biotechnologists, as the complex phenotypes that are manifested are often not easily quantified. Conventional parameters employed in these analyses are of limited value, as they reveal little about the specific branching behaviour of the organism, which is an important consideration given the demonstrated link between branching frequency and metabolite production. More recently, fractal geometry has been employed in …

A Covert Encryption Method For Applications In Electronic Data Interchange, Jonathan Blackledge, Dmitry Dubovitskiy Jan 2009

A Covert Encryption Method For Applications In Electronic Data Interchange, Jonathan Blackledge, Dmitry Dubovitskiy

Articles

A principal weakness of all encryption systems is that the output data can be ‘seen’ to be encrypted. In other words, encrypted data provides a ‘flag’ on the potential value of the information that has been encrypted. In this paper, we provide a new approach to ‘hiding’ encrypted data in a digital image.

In conventional (symmetric) encryption, the plaintext is usually represented as a binary stream and encrypted using an XOR type operation with a binary cipher. The algorithm used is ideally designed to: (i) generate a maximum entropy cipher so that there is no bias with regard to any …

Scattering From A Tenuous Random Medium With Applications In Optics, Jonathan Blackledge Jan 2009

Scattering From A Tenuous Random Medium With Applications In Optics, Jonathan Blackledge

Articles

Mathematical models for the scattering of light (and other radiation) tend to fall into two categories based on a weak field condition (single scattering processes) or a strong field condition (multiple scattering processes). In the latter case, the complexity of deterministic models coupled with available solutions often fail to provide results that are of value to engineering systems (e.g. imaging systems). For this reason, multiple scattering problems are often approached using stochastic modelling methods whose foundations lie in random walk theory where the amplitude and phase of the scattered field are taken to conform to an appropriate statistical process and …

Double-Glazing Interferometry, Vincent Toal, Emilia Mihaylova Jan 2009

Double-Glazing Interferometry, Vincent Toal, Emilia Mihaylova

Articles

This note describes how white light interference fringes can be seen by observing the Moon through a double-glazed window. White light interferometric fringes are normally observed only in a well-aligned interferometer whose optical path difference is less than the coherence length of the light source, which is approximately one micrometer for white light. Obtaining such fringes in a Michelson interferometer is not a trivial task.1 The interferometer is typically illuminated with a monochromatic source and the path length difference adjusted with a wedge angle between the interferometer mirrors so that five or six vertical fringes are visible, indicating nearly equal …

Optical Properties Of Silica-Mfi Doped Acrylamide-Based Photopolymer, Tzvetanka Babeva, Rosen Todorov, Svetlana Mintova, Temenujka Yovcheva, Izabela Naydenova, Vincent Toal Jan 2009

Optical Properties Of Silica-Mfi Doped Acrylamide-Based Photopolymer, Tzvetanka Babeva, Rosen Todorov, Svetlana Mintova, Temenujka Yovcheva, Izabela Naydenova, Vincent Toal

Articles

The optical properties of acrylamide-based photopolymer doped with pure silica MFI-type zeolites are studied by refractometric and spectrophotometric means. Dynamic Light Scattering and Transmission Electron Microscopy are used for zeolite characterization and laser refractometry and White Light Interferometric profilometry are used for surface characterization of the composites. Refractive indices and absorption coefficients of composites are determined from their transmittance and reflectance spectra. The calculated dispersion curves are further used for deriving the zeolites refractive index and porosity and the latter compared to the values of total pore volume obtained from N2-sorption measurements. The impact of the doping level on the …

Optical And Holographic Characteristics Of Photopolymer Layers, Temenujka Yovcheva, Izabela Naydenova, Ivanka Vlaeva, Suzanne Martin, Vincent Toal, Simeon Sainov

Articles

In the present work the optical and holographic characteristics of acrylamide-based photopolymer layers are studied. For the first time the refractive index change of a liquid acrylamide photopolymer due to exposure at 532 nm is obtained using a critical angle laser micro-refractometer. The 30 mm thick solid photopolymer films are prepared by casting on glass substrates. Bragg holographic gratings with spatial frequencies of 710 mm-1, 1050 mm-1 and 1600 mm-1 are recorded using a diode laser operating at 532 nm wavelength. The diffraction efficiency dependence on the exposure energy is investigated. The obtained results are compared with the Stetson holographic …

Investigation Of The Light Induced Redistribution Of Beta Nanoparticles In An Acrylamide-Based Photopolymer, Elsa Leite, Izabela Naydenova, Nitesh Pandey, Tzvetanka Babeva, G. Majano, Svetlana Mintova

Articles

We report the redistribution of colloidal zeolite Beta nanoparticles during holographic recording in acrylamide-based photopolymers. Using the techniques of confocal Raman spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy dispersive x-ray analysis (SEM–EDX), we have observed a periodic pattern, whose spacing agrees with the fringe spacing of the recorded holographic diffraction grating. It was estimated that the fraction of nanoparticles redistributed as a result of the holographic recording is 40%. The effect of the nanoparticles on the average refractive index of the nanocomposite layers was studied by UV–visible spectroscopy. It was observed that the addition of zeolite nanoparticles leads to …

Second-Hand Smoke Exposure In Cars And Respiratory Health Effects In Children, Patrick J. Goodman, Z. Kabir, Luke Clancy, P.J. Manning, J. Holohan, S. Keogan

Articles

We examined potential associations of ever asthma, and symptoms of wheeze (past 12 months), hay fever, eczema and bronchitis (cough with phlegm) among school children exposed to second-hand smoke (SHS) in cars, using a modified Irish International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood (ISAAC) protocol. 2,809 children of 13–14 yrs old and who selected randomly from post-primary schools throughout Ireland completed the 2007 ISAAC self-administered questionnaire. Adjusted OR (adjusted for sex, active smoking status of children interviewed and their SHS exposure at home) were estimated for the associations studied, using multivariable logistic regression techniques. Overall, 14.8% (13.9% in young …

Holographic Recording In Acrylamide Photopolymers: Thickness Limitations, Mohammad Mahmud, Izabela Naydenova, Nitesh Pandey, Tzvetanka Babeva, Raghavendra Jallapuram, Suzanne Martin, Vincent Toal

Articles

Holographic recording in thick photopolymer layers is important for application in holographic data storage, volume holographic filters and correlators. Here, the characteristics of acrylamidebased photopolymer layers having thickness from 250 μm to 1-mm were studied. For each layer thickness samples with three different values of absorbance were studied. By measuring both the first order diffraction efficiency growth of holographically recorded gratings and studying the diffraction patterns obtained, the influence of scattering on the diffraction efficiency of thick volume holographic gratings was analyzed. It was observed that above a particular thickness and absorbance, the first order diffraction efficiency significantly decreased because …

Influence Of Magnesium Nitrate On The Corrosion Performance Of Sol-Gel Coated Aa2024-T3 Aluminium Alloy, Rajath Varma, Brendan Duffy, John Cassidy Jan 2009

Influence Of Magnesium Nitrate On The Corrosion Performance Of Sol-Gel Coated Aa2024-T3 Aluminium Alloy, Rajath Varma, Brendan Duffy, John Cassidy

Articles

Traditional anti-corrosion technology has relied heavily on using reducible metal species, predominantly hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)), for protecting reactive metal alloys such as aluminium which is extensively used in the aerospace sector. However, the impending changes in the use of Cr(VI) in Europe and the United States have forced aerospace manufacturers to examine alternative materials for protecting aluminium. One of the most promising alternatives being investigated are organosilane based sol-gels containing anticorrosion additives. In this work the anti-corrosion properties of magnesium (II) nitrate (Mg(NO3)2) as a inhibitor was investigated at different concentrations (0.1% - 1.0 wt %) in a methyltriethoxysilane (MTEOS) …

Silver Doped Perfluoropolyether-Urethane Coatings: Antibacterial Activity And Surface Analysis, Niall Stobie, Brendan Duffy, Steven Hinder, Patrick Mchale, Declan Mccormack Jan 2009

Silver Doped Perfluoropolyether-Urethane Coatings: Antibacterial Activity And Surface Analysis, Niall Stobie, Brendan Duffy, Steven Hinder, Patrick Mchale, Declan Mccormack

Articles

The colonisation of clinical and industrial surfaces with pathogenic microorganisms has prompted increased research into the development of effective antibacterial and antifouling coatings. There is evidence that implanted biomedical surfaces coated with metallic silver can be inactivated by hysiological fluids, thus reducing the bioactivity of the coating. In this work, we report the biofilm inhibition of Staphylococcus epidermidis using a roomtemperatureprocessedsilver dopedperfluoropolyether-urethane coating. The release of silver ions from these fluoropolymers over a six-day period inhibited bacterial encrustation – as observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis indicated differences in carbon, fluorine and sodium surface composition …

Focusing On Process And History: Path Dependence, Paul Donnelly Jan 2009

Focusing On Process And History: Path Dependence, Paul Donnelly

Articles

In recognition of the calls for more processual and historically informed organizational theorizing, this chapter considers the notion of path dependency, an approach which holds that a historical path of choices has the character of a branching process with a self-reinforcing dynamic such that preceding steps in a particular direction induce further movement in the same direction, thereby making the possibility of switching to some other previously credible alternative more difficult. Path dependence seeks to assess how process, sequence and temporality can be best incorporated into explanation, the focus of the researcher being on particular outcomes, temporal sequencing and the …

Hart Avec Kant: On The Inseparability Of Law And Morality, David G. Carlson Jan 2009

Hart Avec Kant: On The Inseparability Of Law And Morality, David G. Carlson

Articles

The article critiques H.L.A. Hart's The Concept of Law from a Kantian perspective, arguing that Hart's separation thesis between law and morality is untenable. Hart's internal point of view, a cornerstone of his jurisprudence, is revealed to be indistinguishable from morality, undermining his effort to separate law from moral considerations. The analysis contends that Hart's theory ultimately collapses into a Kantian framework, where law and morality share a common form, challenging the foundational principles of legal positivism.

Inverse Scattering Solutions With Applications To Electromagnetic Signal Processing, Jonathan Blackledge, Timo Hamalainen, Jyrki Joutsensalo Jan 2009

Inverse Scattering Solutions With Applications To Electromagnetic Signal Processing, Jonathan Blackledge, Timo Hamalainen, Jyrki Joutsensalo

Articles

When a signal is recorded that has been physically generated by some scattering process (the interaction of electromagnetic, acoustic or elastic waves with inhomogeneous materials, for example), the ‘standard model’ for the signal (i.e. information content convolved with a characteristic Impulse Response Function) is usually based on a single scattering approximation. An additive noise term is introduced into the model to take into account a range of non-deterministic factors including multiple scattering that, along with electronic noise and other background noise sources, is assumed to be relatively weak. Thus, the standard model is based on a ‘weak field condition’ and …

Three-Dimensional Spatial Information Systems: State Of The Art Review, Bianca Schoen-Phelan, D. Laefer, S. W. Morrish, M. Bertolotto Jan 2009

Three-Dimensional Spatial Information Systems: State Of The Art Review, Bianca Schoen-Phelan, D. Laefer, S. W. Morrish, M. Bertolotto

Articles

A spatial information system (SIS) is critical to the hosting, querying, and analyzing of spatial data sets. The increasing availability of three-dimensional (3D) data (e.g. from aerial and terrestrial laser scanning) and the desire to use such data in large geo-spatial platforms have been dual drivers in the evolution of integrated SISs. Within this context, recent patents demonstrate efforts to handle large data sets, especially complex point clouds. While the development of feature-rich geo-systems has been well documented, the implementation of support for 3D capabilities is only now being addressed. This paper documents the underlying technologies implemented for the support …
