Multifluid Magnetohydrodynamic Turbulent Decay, Turlough Downes, Stephen O'Sullivan Mar 2011

Multifluid Magnetohydrodynamic Turbulent Decay, Turlough Downes, Stephen O'Sullivan

Articles

It is generally believed that turbulence has a significant impact on the dynamics and evolution of molecular clouds and the star formation that occurs within them. Non-ideal magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) effects are known to influence the nature of this turbulence. We present the results of a suite of 5123 resolution simulations of the decay of initially super-Alfv enic and supersonic fully multifluid MHD turbulence. We find that ambipolar diffusion increases the rate of decay of the turbulence while the Hall effect has virtually no impact. The decay of the kinetic energy can be fitted as a power law in time and …

Thermal Bridging - Understanding Its Critical Role In Energy Efficiency, Joseph Little, Beñat Arregi Mar 2011

Thermal Bridging - Understanding Its Critical Role In Energy Efficiency, Joseph Little, Beñat Arregi

Articles

Plane element heat loss[1] and thermal bridging[2] together constitute all the conduction heat loss (measured in W/K, watts per kelvin) through the thermal envelope[3] of a building. Perversely insulating the plane elements more and more without carefully dealing with junctions can lead to a significant increase in thermal bridging heat loss. This is often more significant in poorly thought-out energy-focused retrofits than in existing or new buildings.

A Stability Study Of A New Explicit Numerical Scheme For A System Of Differential Equations With A Large Skew-Symmetric Component, Katharine Gurski, Stephen O'Sullivan Feb 2011

A Stability Study Of A New Explicit Numerical Scheme For A System Of Differential Equations With A Large Skew-Symmetric Component, Katharine Gurski, Stephen O'Sullivan

Articles

Abstract. Explicit numerical methods for the solution of a system of stiff differential equations suffer from a time step size that approaches zero in order to satisfy stability conditions. Implicit schemes allow a larger time-step, but require more computations. When the differential equations are dominated by a skew-symmetric component, the problem is not stiffness in the sense that the size of the eigenvalues are unequal, rather the that the real eigenvalues are dominated by imaginary eigenvalues. We present and compare analytical results for stable time step limits for several explicit methods including the super-time-stepping method of Alexiades, Amiez, and Gremaud …

Raman Scattering Analysis Of Silicon Dioxide Single Crystal Treated By Direct Current Plasma Discharge, Dusan M. Poparic, Vladimir Milosavljevic, Andrijana Zekic, N Romcevic, Steven Daniels

Articles

Low-k materials such as silicon dioxide (SiO2) play an important role in the semiconductor industry. Plasma has become indispensable for advanced materials processing. In this work a treatment of SiO2single crystal by direct current plasma discharge is studied in detail. Offline metrology is conducted for silicon dioxide wafers by Raman scattering, energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy, and ellipsometry. Broad Raman peak at around 2800 cm−1 is observed for the treatedSiO2 wafers. Effects of plasma treatment on position of this peak are reported in the paper. An analysis of this correlation could be a framework for creating virtual etch rate sensors, which might …

Influence Of Angular Orientation Of The Embedded Highly Birefringent Fiber On Pmd Changes Under Axial Stress, Daniel Budaszewski Daniel Budaszewski, Piotr Lesiak, Robert Plaga, Ginu Rajan, Yuliya Semenova, Gerald Farrell, Anna Boczkowska, Andrzej W. Domanski's, Tomasz R. Woliński

Articles

In the paper we present results of the research on polarization mode dispersion changes inside the polarimetric optical fiber sensors based on highly birefringent optical fibers embedded into composite materials with different angular orientations of the optical axes. Based on measurements made for different types of highly birefringent optical fiber sensors we have shown that strain sensitivities after lamination process are different in comparison to the data obtained before lamination. Our results indicate that polarization mode dispersion in side-hole highly birefringent fibers under axial stress strongly depends on fiber orientation in the composite material suggesting that orientation of the polarization …

Sustainable Water Resource Management And Participatory System Dynamics: Case Study: Developing The Palouse Basin Participatory Model, Barbara Cosens Jan 2011

Sustainable Water Resource Management And Participatory System Dynamics: Case Study: Developing The Palouse Basin Participatory Model, Barbara Cosens

Articles

The complexity of explaining highly scientific information and juggling a plethora of social values is leading agencies and communities such as those in the Palouse Basin to explore the use of participatory modeling processes using system dynamics. Participatory system dynamics as a methodology creates a transparent nexus of science, policy options, social concerns and local knowledge that enhances discussion of issues surrounding the use of natural resources. The process of developing a systems model uses the tenets of scientific theory, hypothesis testing and clear statements of assumptions. A unique aspect of the Palouse basin project is the use of system …

Nietzsche’S Naturalism Reconsidered, Brian Leiter Jan 2011

Nietzsche’S Naturalism Reconsidered, Brian Leiter

Articles

According to one recent scholar, “Most commentators on Nietzsche would agree that he is in a broad sense a naturalist in his mature philosophy” (Janaway 2007: 34). This may come as a surprise to those who think of Martin Heidegger, Walter Kaufmann, Paul DeMan, Sarah Kofman, and Alexander Nehamas, among others, as “commentators” on Nietzsche. And yet there are, indeed, clear signs that in the last twenty years, as Nietzsche studies has become more philosophically sophisticated, the naturalist reading of Nietzsche has come to the fore, certainly in Anglophone scholarship.1 In Nietzsche on Morality (Leiter 2002), I set out …

Empiricism And The Rising Incidence Of Coauthorship In Law, Tom Ginsburg, Thomas J. Miles Jan 2011

Empiricism And The Rising Incidence Of Coauthorship In Law, Tom Ginsburg, Thomas J. Miles

Articles

The recent growth of empirical scholarship in law, which some have termed "empirical legal studies," has received much attention. A less-noticed implication of this trend is its potential impact on the manner of scholarly production in legal academia. A common prediction is that academic collaboration rises with scholarly specialization. As the complexity of a field grows, more human capital and more diverse types of human capital are needed to make a contribution. This Article presents two tests of whether empiricism has spurred more coauthorship in law. First, the Article shows that the fraction of articles in the top fifteen law …

Regulatory Contrarians, Brett Mcdonnell, Daniel Schwarcz Jan 2011

Regulatory Contrarians, Brett Mcdonnell, Daniel Schwarcz

Articles

This Article explores the role that “regulatory contrarians” can play in promoting more adaptive financial regulation. Such contrarians have several distinguishing features. First, they possess persuasive authority by virtue of their position, access to media and officials, or speaking engagements and reports. Second, they are affiliated with, and enjoy privileged access to, a regulatory entity but are nonetheless independent, as reflected in their budget, staffing, and/or priorities. Finally, they are tasked with studying the regulatory process, policy positions, and the regulated market and in some way reporting on deficiencies and potential improvements. The Article argues that regulatory contrarians can modestly …

Radbruch's Formula And Conceptual Analysis, Brian Bix Jan 2011

Radbruch's Formula And Conceptual Analysis, Brian Bix

Articles

Gustav Radbruch, in well-known work that appeared just after World War II, put forward a formula that stated that state-promulgated rules that are sufficiently unjust lose their status as valid law. Radbruch’s Formula has generally been understood as a claim about the nature of law, and recent variations of Radbruch’s Formula, like Robert Alexy’s “claim to correctness,” have similarly been characterized as offering a truth about the nature of law. Additionally, both Radbruch’s and Alexy’s theories have been presented as criticisms of, and alternatives to, legal positivism. An alternative understanding of the Formula (and its modern variations) is as (mere) …

Hybrid Zirconium Sol-Gel Thin Films With High Refractive Index, Arnaud Gorin, Robert Copperwhite, Salem Elmaghrum, Colette Mcdonagh, Mohamed Oubaha Jan 2011

Hybrid Zirconium Sol-Gel Thin Films With High Refractive Index, Arnaud Gorin, Robert Copperwhite, Salem Elmaghrum, Colette Mcdonagh, Mohamed Oubaha

Articles

We describe the synthesis of optical quality thin film materials with high refractive index, employing zirconium based hybrid sol-gel precursors. As the zirconium propoxide precursor is unstable in the presence of a strong nucleophilic agent such as water, two synthesis routes have been performed employing a chelating agent and an organosilane precursor to avoid the formation of any undesired ZrO2 agglomerates, leading to organo-zirconate complexes and silicato-zirconate copolymers, respectively. The prepared hybrid sol-gel materials were deposited by spin-coating to form a transparent thin film on silicon substrates, and heat treated at 100 °C for the final stabilisation of the layer. …

Of Mises And Min(Sky): Libertarian And Liberal Responses To Financial Crises Past And Present, Brett Mcdonnell Jan 2011

Of Mises And Min(Sky): Libertarian And Liberal Responses To Financial Crises Past And Present, Brett Mcdonnell

Articles

This article compares two approaches to understanding and preventing financial crises, Austrian and Keynesian business cycle theory. The two are traditionally, and rightly, seen as having diametrically opposed prescriptions, with the Austrian approach opposing governmental intervention and blaming central bank policy for most crises, while the Keynesian approach advocates active governmental intervention to both prevent crises and to end them when they do occur. The article argues that both approaches nonetheless have much in common. Each emphasizes the importance of radical uncertainty in financial markets and analyzes business cycles as tied to credit cycles that turn on shifting investor expectations. …

Don't Panic! Defending Cowardly Interventions During And After A Financial Crisis, Brett Mcdonnell Jan 2011

Don't Panic! Defending Cowardly Interventions During And After A Financial Crisis, Brett Mcdonnell

Articles

How should we regulate the U.S. financial system after the financial crisis, when we face the task with a radically inadequate understanding of what went wrong and what effect proposed regulations will likely have? This paper explores three quite different approaches to regulating in the face of severe uncertainty: the libertarianism of Friedrich Hayek, the conservatism of Michael Oakeshott, and the liberalism of John Maynard Keynes. Each thought deeply about the problem of how uncertainty affects human affairs, but each came to quite different conclusions about how to address such uncertainty. The paper outlines the core, immensely useful insights of …

Moving Away From Programming And Towards Computer Science In The Cs First Year, James Heliotis, Richard Zanibbi Jan 2011

Moving Away From Programming And Towards Computer Science In The Cs First Year, James Heliotis, Richard Zanibbi

Articles

After completing a pilot study using the Python programming language to transition to Java within our first-year introductory programming sequence, our department opted to make a more radical change. We assert that our students are better served in their first year of study by a focus on problems in computer science and their solutions, rather than programming. Our new introductory sequence emphasizes algorithm development and analysis, object-oriented design, and testing. As in our pilot, programming is first done in Python, switching to Java when object-oriented design and static typing become advantageous. Students reported liking the problem focus of the courses, …

The Implementation Of Pre-Lecture Resources To Reduce In-Class Cognitive Load: A Case Study For Higher Education Chemistry, Michael Seery, Roisin Donnelly Jan 2011

The Implementation Of Pre-Lecture Resources To Reduce In-Class Cognitive Load: A Case Study For Higher Education Chemistry, Michael Seery, Roisin Donnelly

Articles

This case study describes an effective method to ameliorate the cognitive load caused by new terminology and concepts in lectures. Ten online pre-lecture resources whose design was underpinned by the principles of cognitive load theory were provided to a class of 49 first year university level chemistry students. Each resource introduced a number of key concepts to the forthcoming lecture and included a quiz for students to test understandings and identify misconceptions. The evaluation of the implementation of resources was measured by considering the difference in exam marks for in-semester test and end of module exam. These showed that the …

Formation Of Infrared Windows Of Transparency In One-Dimensional Silicon Photonic Crystals, Anna Baldycheva, Vladmir A; Tolmachev, Tatiana S. Perova, Kevin Berwick Jan 2011

Formation Of Infrared Windows Of Transparency In One-Dimensional Silicon Photonic Crystals, Anna Baldycheva, Vladmir A; Tolmachev, Tatiana S. Perova, Kevin Berwick

Articles

The optical properties of three-component one-dimensional photonic crystal (1-D PC) structures were investigated by modeling them as two-component PCs with an additional regular t-layer, using the gap map approach and the transfer matrix method. Numerical results demonstrate that the introduction of the t-layer affects the properties of the high-order photonic band gaps, replacing them with transmission bands and creating regions of transparency over certain wavelength ranges. For the first time, a map of the transmission bands for a three-component 1-D PC was generated. This map constitutes a unique design tool for infrared optical filters for silicon-based photonic integrated …

Application Of Niobium Enriched Ormosils As Thermally Stable Coatings For Aerospace Aluminium Coatings, P.C. Rajath Varma, Mohamed Oubaha, Pradeepan Periyat, Colette Mcdonagh, Brendan Duffy Jan 2011

Application Of Niobium Enriched Ormosils As Thermally Stable Coatings For Aerospace Aluminium Coatings, P.C. Rajath Varma, Mohamed Oubaha, Pradeepan Periyat, Colette Mcdonagh, Brendan Duffy

Articles

The aim of this experimental research is to study the ability of niobium rich sol-gel coatings to withstand thermal stress, while remaining impermeable to corrosive agents for the protection of aerospace alloys. The coating material is developed via polymeric sol-gel synthesis employing 3-(trimethoxysilyl)propylmethacrylate (MAPTMS) and niobium ethoxide precursors as a source of silicon and niobium, respectively. The beneficial effect of niobium inclusion within coating was characterised spectroscopically, calorimetrically and electrochemically. The thermal cycling effects of the coating were studied using microscopic and accelerated test methods. Electrochemical tests showed that corrosion current of the material was 2 orders lower in magnitude …

The Political Economy Of Fraud On The Market, William Wilson Bratton, Michael L. Wachter Jan 2011

The Political Economy Of Fraud On The Market, William Wilson Bratton, Michael L. Wachter

Articles

The fraud-on-the-market class action no longer enjoys much academic support. The justifications traditionally advanced by its defenders-compensation for out-of-pocket loss and deterrence of fraud-are thought to have failed due to the action's real world dependence on enterprise liability and issuer-funded settlements. The compensation justification collapses when considered from the point of view of different types of shareholders. Well-diversified shareholders' receipts and payments of damages balance over time and amount to a wash before payment of litigation costs. The shareholders arguably in need of compensation--fundamental value investors who rely on published reports--are undercompensated due to pro rata distribution of settlement proceeds …

On The Singular Weyl-Titchmarsh Function Of Perturbed Spherical Schrödinger Operators, Aleksey Kostenko, Gerald Teschl Jan 2011

On The Singular Weyl-Titchmarsh Function Of Perturbed Spherical Schrödinger Operators, Aleksey Kostenko, Gerald Teschl

Articles

We investigate the singular Weyl–Titchmarsh m-function of perturbed spherical Schrödinger operators (also known as Bessel operators) under the assumption that the perturbation q(x) satisfies xq(x) ∈ L1(0, 1). We show existence plus detailed properties of a fundamental system of solutions which are entire with respect to the energy parameter. Based on this we show that the singular mfunction belongs to the generalized Nevanlinna class and connect our results with the theory of super singular perturbations.

On The (Non)-Integrability Of Kdv Hierarchy With Self-Consistent Sources, Vladimir Gerdjikov, Georgi Grahovski, Rossen Ivanov Jan 2011

On The (Non)-Integrability Of Kdv Hierarchy With Self-Consistent Sources, Vladimir Gerdjikov, Georgi Grahovski, Rossen Ivanov

Articles

Nonholonomic deformations of integrable equations of the KdV hierarchy are studied by using the expansions over the so-called “squared solutions” (squared eigenfunctions). Such deformations are equivalent to a perturbed model with external (self-consistent) sources. In this regard, the KdV6 equation is viewed as a special perturbation of KdV. Applying expansions over the symplectic basis of squared eigenfunctions, the integrability properties of the KdV6 equation are analysed. This allows for a formulation of conditions on the perturbation terms that preserve its integrability. The perturbation corrections to the scattering data and to the corresponding action-angle (canonical) variables are studied. The analysis shows …
