Extending And Measuring The Quality Of Fresh-Cut Fruit And Vegetables: A Review, Catherine Barry-Ryan, Ana Belen Martin-Diana, Daniel Rico, J. Barat Jul 2007

Extending And Measuring The Quality Of Fresh-Cut Fruit And Vegetables: A Review, Catherine Barry-Ryan, Ana Belen Martin-Diana, Daniel Rico, J. Barat

Articles

The market sales of ready-to-use fresh vegetables have grown rapidly in recent decades as a result of changes in consumer attitudes, especially consumption of fresh-cut lettuce and carrot due to their use in prepared salads. Chlorine solutions have been widely used to sanitise fruit and vegetables in the fresh-cut industry. However, the association of chlorine with the possible formation of carcinogenic chlorinated compounds in water has called into question the use of chlorine in food processing. There is a real need to find alternatives for preservation of fresh-cut fruit and vegetables in order to improve the efficacy of washing treatments. …

The Acyl-Coa Thioesterase I (Acot1) Is Regulated By The Peroxisome Proliferator-Activated Receptor Alpha And Hepatocyte Nuclear Factor 4 Alpha Via A Distal Response Element In The Promotor., Bikesh Dongol, Yatrik Shah, Insook Kim, Frank J. Gonzalez, Mary Hunt

Articles

The cytosolic acyl-CoA thioesterase I (Acot1) is an enzyme that hydrolyzes longchain acyl-CoAs of C12-C20-CoA in chain-length, to the free fatty acid and coenzyme A. Acot1 was previously shown to be strongly upregulated at mRNA and protein level in rodents by fibrates. In this study, we show that Acot1 mRNA levels were increased 90-fold in liver by treatment with Wy-14,643 and that Acot1 mRNA is also increased 15-fold in the liver of hepatocyte nuclear factor 4 alpha (HNF4a) knockout animals. Our study identified a direct repeat 1 (DR1) located in the Acot1 gene promotor in mouse, which binds the peroxisome …

Performing Tourism In Venice: Local Residents In Focus, Bernadette Quinn Apr 2007

Performing Tourism In Venice: Local Residents In Focus, Bernadette Quinn

Articles

In contrast to the growing literature on tourist mobility as a performed art, relatively little attention has been paid to resident mobility in tourism places. This paper examines how residents encounter tourists using the concept of tourism as a performance. Drawing on the case of the historic city-center of Venice in northeastern Italy, it explores the spatialities produced through the embodied practices of local mobilities. The paper finds that their movements demonstrated a marked degree of agency. It concludes by arguing that the concept of tourism as performance affords useful insights into how local residents are proactively and intricately involved …

An Analysis Of Economic Cost Minimization And Biological Invasion Damage Control Using The Awq Criterion, Gregory Deangelo, Amitrajeet Batabyal, Seshavadhani Kumar Apr 2007

An Analysis Of Economic Cost Minimization And Biological Invasion Damage Control Using The Awq Criterion, Gregory Deangelo, Amitrajeet Batabyal, Seshavadhani Kumar

Articles

DeAngelo et al. (2006) have recently used the AWS criterion in a M/G/1 queuing model to show that there is no necessary tension between economic cost minimization and inspection stringency in non-native species management. In this paper, we use an alternate cost criterion (AWQ criterion) to investigate the generality of this central result in DeAngelo et al. (2006). Our theoretical analysis shows that there is no unambiguous answer to this question. Therefore, we use numerical methods and our numerical analysis leads to two findings. First, for many values of the model parameters that describe the strictness of inspections, there is …

Performance Characteristics Of A Therapeutic Ultrasound Wire Waveguide, Graham Gavin, Garrett Mcguinness, Finbar Dolan, M.S. Hashmi Mar 2007

Performance Characteristics Of A Therapeutic Ultrasound Wire Waveguide, Graham Gavin, Garrett Mcguinness, Finbar Dolan, M.S. Hashmi

Articles

Therapeutic ultrasound angioplasty has been investigated, clinically, by a number of researchers and represents a potentially promising therapy for the treatment of atherosclerotic lesions. To date, there has been no detailed analysis of the effect of mechanical design parameters, such as wire geometry or damping characteristics, on wire waveguide performance. An apparatus capable of delivering therapeutic ultrasound down small diameter nickel–titanium (NiTi) wire waveguides is described. The output peak-to-peak (p–p) displacements at the distal tip of a 1.0mm diameter waveguide were measured experimentally, by means of an optical microscope and image analysis software. The output was measured for a range …

Parallel Java: A Unified Api For Shared Memory And Cluster Parallel Programming In 100% Java, Alan Kaminsky Mar 2007

Parallel Java: A Unified Api For Shared Memory And Cluster Parallel Programming In 100% Java, Alan Kaminsky

Articles

Parallel Java is a parallel programming API whose goals are (1) to support both shared memory (thread-based) parallel programming and cluster (message-based) parallel programming in a single unified API, allowing one to write parallel programs combining both paradigms; (2) to provide the same capabilities as OpenMP and MPI in an object oriented, 100% Java API; and (3) to be easily deployed and run in a heterogeneous computing environment of single-core CPUs, multi-core CPUs, and clusters thereof. This paper describes Parallel Java’s features and architecture; compares and contrasts Parallel Java to other Java based parallel middleware libraries; and reports performance measurements …

On Logic In The Law: Something, But Not All, Susan Haack Mar 2007

On Logic In The Law: Something, But Not All, Susan Haack

Articles

In 1880, when Oliver Wendell Holmes (later to be a Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court) criticized the "logical theology" of law articulated by Christopher Columbus Langdell (the first Dean of Harvard Law School), neither Holmes nor Langdell was aware of the revolution in logic that had begun, the year before, with Frege's Begriffsschrift. But there is an important element of truth in Holmes's insistence that a legal system cannot be adequately understood as a system of "axioms and corollaries"; and this element of truth is not obviated by the more powerful logical techniques that are now available.

What Happened On Deliberation Day, Cass R. Sunstein, Reid Hastie, David Schkade Jan 2007

What Happened On Deliberation Day, Cass R. Sunstein, Reid Hastie, David Schkade

Articles

What are the effects of deliberation about legal and political issues by like-minded people? This Essay reports the results of an experimental investigation involving sixty-three citizens in Colorado. Groups from Boulder, a predominantly liberal city, met to discuss global warming, affirmative action, and civil unions for same-sex couples. Groups from Colorado Springs, a predominately conservative city, discussed the same issues. The major effect of deliberation was to make group members more extreme in their views than they were before they started to talk. Liberals became more liberal on all three issues; conservatives became more conservative. As a result of intragroup …

On Discounting Regulatory Benefits: Risk, Money, And Intergenerational Equity, Arden Rowell, Cass R. Sunstein Jan 2007

On Discounting Regulatory Benefits: Risk, Money, And Intergenerational Equity, Arden Rowell, Cass R. Sunstein

Articles

There is an elaborate debate over the practice of "discounting" regulatory benefits, such as environmental improvements and decreased risks to health and life, when those benefits will not be enjoyed until some future date. Economists tend to think that, as a general rule, such benefits should be discounted in the same way as money; many philosophers and lawyers doubt that conclusion on empirical and normative grounds. Both sides frequently neglect a simple point: if regulators are interested in how people currently value risks that will not come to fruition for a significant time, they can use people's current willingness to …

The Law Of Nature And The Early History Of Unenumerated Rights In The United States, Richard H. Helmholz Jan 2007

The Law Of Nature And The Early History Of Unenumerated Rights In The United States, Richard H. Helmholz

Articles

This Paper seeks to make a modest contribution to the topic of unenumerated rights in American constitutional law by examining the role that natural law played in our legal system at the time of the founding of the Republic-a period here taken, largely for the sake of convenience, to run from the 1 7 90s through the 1820s. The Paper's focus is on case law, rather than legal theory or constitutional doctrine, although I have tried to say enough about the law of nature as it was understood at the time to put the cases into their intellectual context. Whether …
