Control Of Large Stands Of Phragmites Australis In Great Salt Lake, Utah Wetlands, Chad R. Cranney
Control Of Large Stands Of Phragmites Australis In Great Salt Lake, Utah Wetlands, Chad R. Cranney
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Phragmites (common reed) is a non-native, invasive perennial grass from Eurasia that is taking over wetlands across North America. In Utah, Phragmites has expanded to cover tens of thousands of acres in and around the Great Salt Lake (GSL). The GSL and its associated wetlands are recognized regionally and hemispherically as an important bird area (IBA) that provide critical habitat for a wide variety of wetland dependent birds. The invasion and expansion of Phragmites has replaced many of the high quality habitats these avian populations rely on. This research aimed to determine the most effective methods to control Phragmites and …
Effects Of Environmental Water Rights Purchases On Dissolved Oxygen, Stream Temperature, And Fish Habitat, Nathaniel R. Mouzon
Effects Of Environmental Water Rights Purchases On Dissolved Oxygen, Stream Temperature, And Fish Habitat, Nathaniel R. Mouzon
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Degraded water quality has reduced aquatic species abundance and survivability in Nevada’s Walker River. Low instream flows and increased nutrients affect native fish populations through high daily stream temperatures and low nightly dissolved oxygen concentrations. Increasing streamflow, through environmental water purchases, may improve water quality and enhance habitat for native fish species, such as Lahontan cutthroat trout. This study uses River Modeling System, a computer model, to estimate streamflows, stream temperatures, and dissolved oxygen concentrations in the Walker River. Streamflow increases are simulated to determine potential improvements to high water temperatures and low dissolved oxygen concentrations, enabling the prioritization of …
Path Following By A Quadrotor Using Virtual Target Pursuit Guidance, Abhishek Manjunath
Path Following By A Quadrotor Using Virtual Target Pursuit Guidance, Abhishek Manjunath
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Missile guidance laws have been solely developed to follow and intercept a target thereby destroying or damaging it. In this research, the primary objective is to modify and adopt a missile guidance law to be used on a quadrotor to follow a virtual target. The target is termed 'virtual' as it only exists mathematically in the form of equations. The goal is to have the quadrotor successfully following the predefined path (described by the target) while maintaining a fixed distance from the virtual target. To ensure viability and assess performance, a detailed comparison with another path following law is made.

Confirmation Of A New Geometric And Kinematic Model Of The San Andreas Fault At Its Southern Tip, Durmid Hill, Southern California, Daniel K. Markowski
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
This study explains the origin of the deforming structures between the San Andreas fault and the Salton Sea within the Salton Trough in Southern California. ShakeOut simulations and other studies model shaking resulting from a large rupture on the San Andreas fault. These models simulate a start at the southern fault tip of the San Andreas fault that propagates to the northwest. A secondary strand of the San Andreas fault called the East Shoreline fault is located at the southern tip of the San Andreas fault near the shoreline of the Salton Sea. Between the East Shoreline fault zone and …
Interference Mitigation In Multi-Hop Wireless Networks With Advanced Physical-Layer Techniques, Yantian Hou
Interference Mitigation In Multi-Hop Wireless Networks With Advanced Physical-Layer Techniques, Yantian Hou
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
With the ever-growing number of wireless systems, the problem of spectrum scarcity is becoming more important than ever. Many devices coexist in the same frequency band, e.g., IEEE 802.11 (WiFi), 802.15.4 (ZigBee), 802.16 (WiMax), and Bluetooth in the ISM bands. Coexisting in the crowded spectrum bands inevitably leads to mutual interferences. For a wireless network, the interference could be from external sources such as microwave oven and cordless phone, or from internal nodes within multi-flow and multi-hop wireless networks. All these interferences can be detrimental to the performance of co-locating networks if they are not properly mitigated. In my dissertation, …
The Role Of Sexual Communication In Committed Relationships, Adam C. Jones
The Role Of Sexual Communication In Committed Relationships, Adam C. Jones
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
In this Master's thesis, I describe a study to understand the role that sexual communication plays within committed couple relationships. I used data from a sample of 142 couples who completed an online survey consisting of a battery of quantitative assessments measuring relationship satisfaction, sexual satisfaction, communication processes, and sexual communication.
Through path analysis, a statistical tool that tests relationships between variables, I observed the impact that sexual communication has within couple relationships. In my findings, I highlight the differences between the "what" and "how" behind couples' communications about sex. I examined these findings by gender and found important differences …
Urban Agriculture And Small Farm Irrigation: Case Studies From Cache Valley, Utah, Tyler Pratt
Urban Agriculture And Small Farm Irrigation: Case Studies From Cache Valley, Utah, Tyler Pratt
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The socioeconomic landscape of water in Utah is rapidly changing due to population growth, conversion of agricultural land to urban development, and increasing awareness of future water scarcity. The Utah Division of Water Resources (DWRe) forecasts that the currently developed water supplies will not be enough to provide for Utah’s future population, and is pursuing conservation and new development to be able to meet the state’s needs.
Along with the urban growth Utah is experiencing a quickly growing sector of urban and small farm agriculture, but knowledge of water use and current practices in this area is limited. Further research …

Quadrotor Uav Path Following Using Trajectory Shaping, Parwinder Singh Mehrok
Quadrotor Uav Path Following Using Trajectory Shaping, Parwinder Singh Mehrok
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The propose of this research is to develop a path following control law known as Trajectory Shaping. The approach is to develop a three- dimensional (3D) version of it from an existing two-dimensional (2D) model. Apart from research on this 3D control law, a multirotor unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) platform, having four rotors and known as quadrotor is designed from the ground up for validating the concept of path following. Several pre-defined paths like the circle and figure-eight trajectories are used to apply the newly developed version of this control law. The existing 2D concept of Trajectory Shaping guidance …
A Risk-Based Assessment Of Agricultural Water Scarcity Under Climate Change In A Semi-Arid And Snowmelt-Dominated River Basin, Hossam Moursi
A Risk-Based Assessment Of Agricultural Water Scarcity Under Climate Change In A Semi-Arid And Snowmelt-Dominated River Basin, Hossam Moursi
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Water shortage is a crucial concern in the semi-arid areas that have relatively low precipitation. Given the current situation in semi-arid areas where the water supply
already does not meet the water demand, climate change is one of the important factors that is expected to exacerbate the water shortage problem and make the situation even worse in the future. There are many indicators that prove climate change is happening, like the increasing land temperature, sea level rise and decreasing snow cover. Therefore, studying climate change impacts is a vital issue, especially its impacts on water resources systems.
In this research, …
Investigation Of Solubilization, Cold Gelation, And Rennet Coagulation Properties Of Highly Concentrated Micellar Casein Concentrate For Use In Cheese Making, Ying Lu
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
This work demonstrated potentials to use a microfiltrated, diafiltrated, and vacuum-evaporated milk protein concentrate-highly concentrated micellar casein
concentrate (HC-MCC) for use in cheese making. Previously, ultrafiltrated milk concentrate has been used for cheese making to improve cheese yield and increase milk processing ability. However, ultrafiltrated milk contains high level of serum protein, which negatively impact cheese quality during aging. Microfiltrated milk is more suitable for cheese making with most serum proteins removed.
The project evaluated the potential of cheese making using recombined concentrated milk (RCM) by mixing HC-MCC and cream. We identify the method to solubilize …
Assessing Plant Community Structure In The Upper Las Vegas Wash Conservation Transfer Area, Nevada: The Influence Of Biotic And Abiotic Variables, Amy A. Croft
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Ecological communities are complex, the structure of which is composed of interactions between multiple community characteristics and the abiotic and biotic factors shaping them. Because of this complexity, ecological studies are generally limited in scope and size, often dissecting communities into their component parts to examine them piece by piece. While this might be the most practical method to study communities, this approach often neglects other characteristics that, with their inclusion, would provide a more complete picture of community ecology. The studies described in this dissertation were conducted in an effort to synthesize the complexity that is inherent in ecological …
Fluorescent Probes To Investigate Homologous Recombination Dynamics, Eric Parker Davenport
Fluorescent Probes To Investigate Homologous Recombination Dynamics, Eric Parker Davenport
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
As the average cell’s DNA undergoes roughly 1 million molecular lesions per day, learning about one of the repair mechanisms which fixes damaged DNA is a worthwhile endeavor. Such work may provide insights into how to treat or prevent diseases such as cancers and associated genetic disorders. Homologous recombination (HR) is one pathway which is used by cells to repair a specific type of DNA damage, double-strand breaks. While HR is a complex process involving over 25 different proteins, exactly how HR works, including its regulation, is largely unknown. One protein in particular, Rad51, forms a filament on the damaged …

Examining The Effects Of Caregiver Coping Strategies On Care Recipient Outcomes, Joseph S. Wanzek
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Dementia is a progressive syndrome with declines in cognitive and functional abilities. As the world’s population becomes increasingly older, prevalence rates are expected to increase exponentially to over 80 million affected by the year 2040. Individuals with dementia and their caregivers experience various difficulties associated with progression that increases stress for both parties. Caregiving can be burdensome and caregivers may employ a number of strategies to manage problems as they arise. Renewed interest has been focused on the care environment as one way to modify dementia progression as caregivers can be an influential person in the care recipient’s life. Two …
Refining Methods For Quantifying Macroinvertebrate Estimates Of Preference For Use In Stream Bioassessments, Ellen F. Wakeley Tomlinson
Refining Methods For Quantifying Macroinvertebrate Estimates Of Preference For Use In Stream Bioassessments, Ellen F. Wakeley Tomlinson
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Two-thirds of United States stream length is in either fair or poor biological condition. However, we do not yet have reliable, quantitative tools to diagnose site-specific causes of biological impairment. One way to diagnose causes of impairment is to compare the environmental tolerances or preferences of the taxa expected at a site to those of the observed community. Stream ecologists have derived tolerance values (TVs) from field data for use in causal analysis, but inconsistencies across studies cast doubt on the accuracy of these TVs. Published TVs may not agree with one another for several reasons, including: differences in the …
Three Essays On Us Agricultural Insurance, Taehoo Kim
Three Essays On Us Agricultural Insurance, Taehoo Kim
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Agricultural insurance programs such as crop insurance and Dairy Margin Protection program (MPP-Dairy) are managed by United State Department of Agriculture (USDA). The objective of these programs is to help farmers manage their financial risk. Agricultural insurance programs have played an important role for farmers in terms of maintaining farm profitability. There are several potential problems with insurance programs, such as moral hazard and adverse selection, which make them inefficient.
With respect to these problems, three research gaps are identified: i) moral hazard in prevented planting (PP), ii) choice of PP and planting a second crop, and iii) selecting margin …
Structural And Lithological Influences On The Tony Grove Alpine Karst System, Bear River Range, North-Central Utah, Kirsten Bahr
Structural And Lithological Influences On The Tony Grove Alpine Karst System, Bear River Range, North-Central Utah, Kirsten Bahr
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Caves are access points into the subsurface for humans, water, and, in many cases, contaminants. Many caves are connected via a series of conduits that carry water from one cave to another and, eventually, to a spring. However, because most of these conduits are inaccessible, it is difficult to determine the pathway groundwater takes on its way to the spring. The primary objective of this study was to examine the effects of folds, fractures, and rock type upon the formation and orientation of cave passages as well as groundwater flow patterns in the Tony Grove alpine karst system.
Although water …
Balancing Agricultural And Urban Water Needs In Transitioning Arid Landscapes, Bonnie Roos
Balancing Agricultural And Urban Water Needs In Transitioning Arid Landscapes, Bonnie Roos
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
In the arid western United States (U.S.), population expansion is dependent on water supply. With the majority of the water being consumed in agriculture, municipalities often obtain water supply needed for growth from agriculture. This exchange occurs through agricultural-to-urban water right transfers. This trend drives the question of how to strike a balance between agricultural and urban water needs in rapidly growing arid regions.
Utah, located in the Intermountain region of the western U.S., is a state with a rapidly growing population and limited water supply. This research focuses on existing challenges and opportunities for balancing expanding municipal development and …
Throttleable Gox/Abs Launch Assist Hybrid Rocket Motor For Small Scale Air Launch Platform, Zachary S. Spurrier
Throttleable Gox/Abs Launch Assist Hybrid Rocket Motor For Small Scale Air Launch Platform, Zachary S. Spurrier
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The ability for an aircraft-based launch platform to place an orbital payload onto a nominal launch trajectory at a higher energy state -- altitude, velocity, flight path angle, and azimuth --using highly-efficient air breathing propulsion instead of a much lower-efficiency rocket system, offers the potential for a significantly smaller launch vehicle. An airborne platform also provides the ability to launch from multiple locations and allows for significantly increased "system responsiveness." The NASA Armstrong Flight Research Center’s Towed Glider Air-Launch System (TGALS) is a small-scale flight research project investigating the feasibility for a remotely-piloted, towed, glider system to act as a …
Relationships Between Riparian Vegetation, Hydrology, Climate And Disturbance Across The Western United States, Nathaniel Hough-Snee
Relationships Between Riparian Vegetation, Hydrology, Climate And Disturbance Across The Western United States, Nathaniel Hough-Snee
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Flow regime, the magnitude, duration and timing of streamflow, controls the development of floodplain landforms on which riparian vegetation communities assemble. Streamflow scours and deposits sediment, structures floodplain soil moisture dynamics, and transports propagules. Flow regime interacts with environmental gradients like climate, land-use, and biomass-removing disturbance to shape riparian plant distributions across landscapes. These gradients select for groups of riparian plant species with traits that allow them to establish, grow, and reproduce on floodplains – riparian vegetation guilds. Here I ask, what governs the distributions of groups of similar riparian plant species across landscapes? To answer this question, I identify …
Ground Vehicle Platooning Control And Sensing In An Adversarial Environment, Samuel A. Mitchell
Ground Vehicle Platooning Control And Sensing In An Adversarial Environment, Samuel A. Mitchell
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
In the past few years, automated cars have ceased to be part of science fiction, and have instead become a technology that has been implemented, with partially automated systems currently available to customers.
One benefit of automated vehicle technology is the consistent driving patterns due to automation, instead of the inconsistency of distractible humans. Passengers of automated vehicles will be exposed to much less danger than the passengers of human-driven vehicles.
These statements will only be true as automated vehicle systems are scrutinized by experts to find flaws in the system. Security enthusiasts have already hijacked control of an automated …
Optimizing The Advanced Metering Infrastructure Architecture In Smart Grid, Alireza Ghasempour
Optimizing The Advanced Metering Infrastructure Architecture In Smart Grid, Alireza Ghasempour
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The gathered data from smart meters in current advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) of smart grid is huge. This much data causes serious challenges for reliability, performance, and scalability of smart grid. Therefore, we have investigated the scalability of different AMI architectures and proposed a scalable hybrid AMI architecture. We formulated deployment cost of different AMI architecture and used a genetic-based algorithm to minimize the deployment cost for the proposed architecture. We simulated different AMI architectures for five demographic regions and the results proved that our proposed AMI hybrid architecture has a better scalability compared to other AMI architectures.
Optimizing Sustainable Integrated Use Of Groundwater, Surface Water And Reclaimed Water For The Competing Demands Of Agricultural Net Return And Urban Population, Silvia Anastasia Landa
Optimizing Sustainable Integrated Use Of Groundwater, Surface Water And Reclaimed Water For The Competing Demands Of Agricultural Net Return And Urban Population, Silvia Anastasia Landa
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The world population is growing rapidly. In developing countries, the growing population is mostly in urban areas. A bigger population requires more food, and more food requires more water. The water needed for food and people comes from the same sources: surface water (rivers, lakes, etc.) and groundwater (aquifers). Thus, there is a competing water demand between people and agriculture in urban areas.
In this research, we use computer software to make a model of the hydrologic system that focuses on surface water and groundwater. To make the model, we use data from real aquifers and streams in order to …
Chromium Oxidation By Disinfectants And Oxidants Used In Drinking Water Treatment, Nathan D. Rogers
Chromium Oxidation By Disinfectants And Oxidants Used In Drinking Water Treatment, Nathan D. Rogers
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
This project investigated the behavior of hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI), a potential carcinogen) in drinking water. While Cr(VI) can exist naturally, it can also be oxidized from Cr(III), a known trace nutrient. Recently, the State of California implemented a water regulation specifically for Cr(VI) at 10 parts per billion (ppb). This project completed a comprehensive evaluation of chromium behavior when in contact with common drinking water treatment chemicals including chlorine, monochloramine, chlorine dioxide, potassium permanganate, and ozone.
The results of these oxidation experiments are highly applicable to water treatment facilities. If a treatment plant is using monochloramine, there is no indication …

Spider Aggregate Glue Sequence Characterization And Expression, Kyle Berg
Spider Aggregate Glue Sequence Characterization And Expression, Kyle Berg
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Orb-weaving spiders create a glue which is secreted onto the web to capture and retain insects. This glue is made from aggregate protein. Aggregate glue is sticky when wet and can stretch far when pulled at slow speeds, and pull back with a greater force if pulled at high speeds which helps it achieve its purpose as the adhesive that keeps insects in the web. These features also make it an attractive target for applications such as a surgical glue or underwater adhesive. Unfortunately, very little is known about the aggregate glue gene, and knowledge of the genetic sequence is …
Quantum Mechanical Studies Of Charge Assisted Hydrogen And Halogen Bonds, Binod Nepal
Quantum Mechanical Studies Of Charge Assisted Hydrogen And Halogen Bonds, Binod Nepal
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Like cement bridges one brick to another, noncovalent forces also bridge two or more molecules together to form a molecular crystal or molecular cluster. Although weaker than the covalent bond, the existence of noncovalent forces can be seen everywhere from liquid water to construction of complex biomolecules like DNA, RNA, proteins etc. An introduction of suitable charge; positive or negative, on the binding units can increase the strength of noncovalent interaction by several orders of magnitude. The primary aim of this dissertation is to explore some fundamental properties of such charge assisted noncovalent interactions which will be helpful for the …

This document summarizes research conducted to develop and apply climate analysis tools toward a better understanding of the past and future of climate variability in the state of Utah. Two pilot studies developed analysis tools through the investigation of natural variability in precipitation systems in Africa, and research into long-term changes and trends in spring rainfall over the U.S. Great Plains. Our third study used tree-ring data to estimate snowpack in the state of Utah to 1850, doubling the length of record and offering a better understanding of the history of snowpack in the state. Our final study looked at …
Identifying And Reducing Risk Of The Female Athlete Triad In Division I Athletes, Jennifer Day
Identifying And Reducing Risk Of The Female Athlete Triad In Division I Athletes, Jennifer Day
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Physically active females, or female athletes, are at risk for the condition known as the female athlete triad (Triad). The Triad is made up of three components that are distinctly separate, but intertwined: consuming inadequate energy for how much they are exercising, poor bone health, and problems with their menstrual periods. When female athletes don’t consume enough energy for how much they exercise, there can be hormonal imbalances, causing the body to conserve energy from some important functions including menstruation, and increased bone turnover resulting in a higher risk of stress fractures and early osteoporosis. Female athletes at risk for …
