Correlated Inheritance In Wheat, George Stewart
Correlated Inheritance In Wheat, George Stewart
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Since the rediscovery of Mendel's law in 1900, there have been many studies of inheritance in wheat. Of these rather numerous investigations, however, only a few have consisted of correlated studies of various characters on the same plant.
Inheritance of awns and of spike density have received some attention but the studies have hardly more than indicated the problem. Both have been thought by some to be rather simple in their inheritance, and in some crosses without doubt such is the case, but lately there has come a recognition of considerable complexity.
Density. As here used, "density" refers to …
The Effect Of Alternate Freezing And Thawing On Impermeable Alfalfa And Dodder Seeds, A. R. Midgley
The Effect Of Alternate Freezing And Thawing On Impermeable Alfalfa And Dodder Seeds, A. R. Midgley
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
It is surprising to know the small amount of work that has been done on alternate freezing and thawing of seeds. Many experiments, however, have been conducted to see the effect of very low temperatures on seeds and to notice the effect it had on their vitality. Some experimenters subjected seeds to temperatures as low as liquid hydrogen with very interesting results but in very few cases, if any, was the effect of alternate freezing and thawing studied.
The work that follows deals directly with the effects of alternate freezing and thawing on impermeable seeds of alfalfa and of dodder. …
Correlation Studies In Wheat, Joseph Reed
Correlation Studies In Wheat, Joseph Reed
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Considerable work has been done by plant breeders and investigators in the study of individual plant characters, but only a few have attempted to work out correlations between characters in crop plants. One reason for this seems to be, that many investigators have felt that correlation studies were of very little practical value. This attitude was due perhaps to the interpretation given correlation data, especially the nature of the casual agency or agencies to which the correlation was attributed. Most of our plant breeders however, have been too busy working on experiments with single characters and have given little or …
The Effect Of Hydrogen Ion Concentration Of Solution Upon The Absorption Of Water By The Hard Seed Of Alfalfa, A. L. Starr
The Effect Of Hydrogen Ion Concentration Of Solution Upon The Absorption Of Water By The Hard Seed Of Alfalfa, A. L. Starr
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The hard seed coat found on some seeds has long been an object of interest to experimentors in seed germination and a great deal of work has been done on various phases of the problem. Some have attacked it with the idea of hastening germination, while others have been interested in determining the nature of the seed coat and isolating the factors which make it impermeable under ordinary favorable germination conditions.

The Relation Of Light To Soil Moisture Phenomena And To Water Transmission In Plants, Leon B. Linford
The Relation Of Light To Soil Moisture Phenomena And To Water Transmission In Plants, Leon B. Linford
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
An attempt was made in this laboratory to measure the pressure or capillary potential of soils by a vapor pressure method. The experiment was carried out by placing small cans of soil in dessicators with solutions of known vapor pressure in the bottom. These dessicators were immersed in a constant temperature water bath. It was hoped that by this method the vapor pressure of the soils could be determined and the pressure potentials calculated as will be explained in a later part of this paper. The results were disappointing because the wet soils in dessicators over pure water dried out …
A Study Of The Reading Habits Of Adults, Burton K. Farnsworth
A Study Of The Reading Habits Of Adults, Burton K. Farnsworth
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
For several years past, some of the best students of americancolleges have been graduating with a major in English; and have gone forth full of hope and enthusiasm to perfect the oral and written expression of Young America, and to implant in them a taste for, and an appreciation of, worthwhile literature. While there can be no doubt that the training of teachers has steadily improved, and the time allotted to the study of English has constantly increased; yet critics say, and people generally believe them, that young America is still untaught. These critics declare that altho our boys and …
The Alkali And Water Relations Of Atriplex Carnosa, A. R. Croft
The Alkali And Water Relations Of Atriplex Carnosa, A. R. Croft
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The question of alkali has many phases. Much work has been done on this important phase of soil science, particularly as it affects the agricultural products and native vegetation. These two phases of the subject naturally forced themselves upon men who tilled the soil for a livlihood and in late years thay have occupied the attention of many soil investigators. The reliability of this indicator value of native vegetation, (1) on a given soil has long since been established in a general way. This generalization has been used rather extensively in making a hasty survey of large possible agricultural areas. …

Early Political Organization Of Cache County From 1856-1870, Margaret Woodside
Early Political Organization Of Cache County From 1856-1870, Margaret Woodside
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The Mormons like all other pioneers of the West were desirous of spreading out and occupying the Territory which they had acquired. The policy of their great leader and colonizer, President Brigham Young, was to encourage these settlements and develop the land so that the State might take some part in the commercial activities of the country. "Utah grew up from a number of colonies sent out from time to time by Brigham Young and his council. These bands were placed under able and experienced captains. Hence the settlements and counties of the Territory at the outset grew up rather …
A Correlation Of Stability And Intelligence Tests, J. Byron Birch
A Correlation Of Stability And Intelligence Tests, J. Byron Birch
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
It is my purpose in this paper to study the correlation between the results secured from the Army Alpha Intelligence test and the Star Mirror Stability test. I recognise the fact that intelligence is the most important factor in human conduct and therefore do not want to discount any reliable, objective intelligence test. It is admitted by most educators that there are other important factors in human conduct. Thorndike stated, "stability has a great weight in mentality". Goddard, in his work on Levels of Intelligence, at Princeton University, said, "I know there are other factors, but solve the X now …
The Possibilities Of City Manager Government For Utah Communities, George S. Bates
The Possibilities Of City Manager Government For Utah Communities, George S. Bates
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Municipal functioning in Utah has been written about more or less from a theoretical point of view, but very little has been done by way of making careful surveys of city administration in the state. This is especially the case in so far as city manager government is concerned. The writer recognizes that a subject dealing with "The Possibilities of City Manager Government for Utah Communities" is very inclusive, and under other circumstances would possible be too broad in its scope for a thesis of this length. The study of city budget systems, or of municipal lighting in Utah, or …
A Method Of Snow Surveying And Its Application To Forecasting Stream Flow, Leslie Bowen
A Method Of Snow Surveying And Its Application To Forecasting Stream Flow, Leslie Bowen
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The value of knowing ahead of time the amount of water to be expected from any given stream before the season is to far spent is a valuable asset.

A Study To Determine The Feasibility Of Irrigating The Lands Included In The Cache Valley Water Conservation District No. 1, I. Donald Jerman
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The purpose of this report is to investigate the feasibility of irrigating the lands of the Cache Valley Water Conservation District No. 1. The district, as it now stands, is very much in need of many improvements. The Main canals are now in use and are in a good condition to serve all the lands with the required amount of water, but the few laterals that are now constructed, are in a poor condition, with the remaining laterals yet to be finished.
Before successful irrigation can be practiced, a large portion of the land will require leveling and small areas …
A Contribution To Our Knowledge Of The Aphididae Of Utah, George Knowlton
A Contribution To Our Knowledge Of The Aphididae Of Utah, George Knowlton
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
There are many groups of insects in Utah that have not been touched in a systematic way up to the present time, and to the knowledge of the author no systematic work has been done on the homopterous family Aphididae.
Due to the very common occurrence of the aphids, or plant lice, and the need for a simple key that would aid in the determination of these insects, this work was commenced in June 1923, continuous work being carried on in collecting, determining, drawing and describing, up to the present time.
A Study Of The Effect Of The Age Of Parents On The Ability Of Dairy Cows To Produce Milk And Butterfat, J. Howard Maughan
A Study Of The Effect Of The Age Of Parents On The Ability Of Dairy Cows To Produce Milk And Butterfat, J. Howard Maughan
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The question of the possible effect of the age of parents on the quality of the offspring which they produce has long been a disputed one. It is held by some that the ages of both parents act together in determining the quality of offspring. There are others who maintain that the age of the dam only is a factor and still others who believe that only the age of the sire need be considered in this connection.
Normal Spread Between Local And Terminal Market Prices For Sheep, Von T. Ellsworth
Normal Spread Between Local And Terminal Market Prices For Sheep, Von T. Ellsworth
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The consuming world must look to eight nations for 68 per cent of its supply of sheep and sheep products, as shown by the accompanying chart and table No. 1. Australia leads other nations with 19 per cent, while the United states follows with 8. 7 per cent of the world's sheep population. The nature of the industry confines it to the more sparsely populated regions, and areas ranking high in cheap grazing lands.
A Study Of Size Inheritance In Wheat, Peter Nelson
A Study Of Size Inheritance In Wheat, Peter Nelson
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The results presented in this paper are from data accumulated by a study of the F3 generation of a cross between the two varieties, Sevier and New Zealand wheat. This cross was made during the summer of 1920 by Professor George Stewart with the object of combining the high-yielding power of Sevier with the strong straw of New Zealand. In the fall of 1922 the problem was assigned to me, at which time I selected about 150 superior plants, possessing the desired characteristics, at least so far as appearance was concerned. Since then these plants and the F3 generation have …
Inheritance Of Chaff Color, Head Shape, And Grain Texture In Wheat, Delmar C. Tingey
Inheritance Of Chaff Color, Head Shape, And Grain Texture In Wheat, Delmar C. Tingey
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The data presented in this thesis are the results obtained from a study of the F2 and F3 generations from a cross between the wheat varieties, Dicklow and Hard Federation. Toward the end of the summer of 1922 this problem was assigned to me by Professor George Stewart. The plants then growing in the field were in the F2 generation, the cross having been made in 1920 by Professor Stewart. The chief purpose of the cross was to improve the grain quality of spring-irrigated wheat by the application of Mendelian principles in such a way as to …
The Effect Of Dry Heating On Alfalfa Seed And Adulterants, Ernest V. Staker
The Effect Of Dry Heating On Alfalfa Seed And Adulterants, Ernest V. Staker
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The relationship of artificial heating to the germination of seeds has been a subject of more or less interest for the last 75 years. Like other research work, experimenters first had their attention called to the problem largely as the result of innate curiosity. They were interested in the result as measured by germinative power, of the application to seeds of different amounts of heat for varying periods of time, consequently many divergent and sundry experiments were carried out. Seeds of a large number of plants have been subjected to tests and the results recorded. The investigations include the effect …
Qualitative Mendelian Inheritance In Wheat Hybrids, Aaron F. Bracken
Qualitative Mendelian Inheritance In Wheat Hybrids, Aaron F. Bracken
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Two methods of crop improvement are open to the plant breeder. Pure-line selection, which might be mentioned first, deals with the natural variability in plant populations. Thru selection, isolation, and comparative yield tests superior individuals are located. Nothing, however, can be added which the plant does not already have. Here hybridization provides a new starting point. Increased variation, new combination of characters, and thus greater opportunities are provided for improvement. The present investigation has for its purpose a study of the latter phase of this subject.
In certain parts of Utah the straw from dry-land wheat is used for feeding …
Inheritance Studies In Kanred X Martin And In G-149 X Ridit, Myron T. Hansen
Inheritance Studies In Kanred X Martin And In G-149 X Ridit, Myron T. Hansen
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The studies here reported involve two crosses, one of which was between a pure line of Kanred and a pure line of Martin from a bunt resistant selection. The other was between a pure line of G-149, a rust-resistant segregate from Sevier x Dicklow, and a pure line of Ridit. These were both economic breeding projects made in an effort to combine the good commercial qualities of Kanred and G-149 with the high bunt resistance of Martin and Ridit, respectively.
These crosses also furnished, as a by-product, some good genetic data, as in each cross one parent was fully awned …
A Study Of The Flow Of Water Over Triangular Weirs And The Determination Of Coefficients Of Discharge For Small Heads, J. Milton Barrett
A Study Of The Flow Of Water Over Triangular Weirs And The Determination Of Coefficients Of Discharge For Small Heads, J. Milton Barrett
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The development of artesian and pumped wells as a source of irrigation water has created the need for a measuring device which will be accurate for small discharges. The thin edged weir has been accepted as one of the most accurate and desirable measuring devices for this work. Three types of weirs are now commonly used: the Rectangular, the Cipolleti, and the Triangular Notch weir. Of these types the triangular notch is probably best suited for small discharges (under 3 second feet). The various formulae for discharge over 90% Triangular weirs have been accurately determined for heads over two tenths …
Field Studies Of The Control Of The Sugar Beet Nematode. (1920-24). (Heterodera Schachtii Schmidt)., Alfred H. Bateman
Field Studies Of The Control Of The Sugar Beet Nematode. (1920-24). (Heterodera Schachtii Schmidt)., Alfred H. Bateman
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The dire consequences of nematode invasion have been graphically depicted by Spiegler (1907), who says, the beet industry was at its heyday during the seventies. Nor satisfied with the land already in cultivation, the farmer plowed fertile lands along the border of the streams, wherein to grow beets, obtaining in some cases of 20 to 27 tons an acre.
Loss Of Minerals In Cooking Vegetables, Sadie O. Morris
Loss Of Minerals In Cooking Vegetables, Sadie O. Morris
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
It has long been recognized that vegetables contain certain necessary substances which are essential to the human diet. Considerable attention has been given the different foods as to their economic value to human nutrition, however the information concerning the preparation of foods as to their nutritive losses is as yet inadequate. Considerable research work has been done in certain directions and some valuable data accumulated as to the economic losses contained in the waste or discarded portions of the food material. Several investigators have rather accurately determined not only the economic, but also the nutritive losses, especially those which occur …
Black-Leaf, A New Fungous Disease Of The Pea, M. B. Linford
Black-Leaf, A New Fungous Disease Of The Pea, M. B. Linford
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
In the middle of July, 1921, a leaf-spot disease was observed in fields of late crop canning peas (Pisum sativum L.) in the neighborhood of Smithfield, Cache County, Utah. To Professor B. L. Richards who was first to examine affected plants in detail it appeared to be new, differing distinctly from any described disease which he recalled.
Critique Of Influence Of Mineral Manures Upon The Mineral And Nitrogen Composition Of Plants, Dan Nelson
Critique Of Influence Of Mineral Manures Upon The Mineral And Nitrogen Composition Of Plants, Dan Nelson
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Variation in quality of plants of the same species has been known to exist for a long time. The influences bringing about such variation have been studied only comparatively recently. Quantity production has been given the greatest amount of attention as a rule, the beneficial results from the use of manures being judged by the quantity of produce. Some plants, however, varied so widely in composition, and the variations were of such paramount importance, that the influences affecting quality began to receive some attention. Of this type of plants may be mentioned sugar-beets and tobacco. There was also the hope …
Competition Of Foreign Products In Logan With Similar Products Produced Locally, Rulon Smith
Competition Of Foreign Products In Logan With Similar Products Produced Locally, Rulon Smith
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Things which have the power to satisfy human wants have utility. Goods which exist in quantities less than sufficient to satisfy all the wants for them are called economic goods. These goods are produced by the application of man's mental and physical powers to the materials of nature.
The Movement Of Ground Water And Its Relation To The Drainage Of Irrigated Lands, Ernest O. Larson
The Movement Of Ground Water And Its Relation To The Drainage Of Irrigated Lands, Ernest O. Larson
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
One needs but to review the history of the irrigated projects of the West to see clearly the importance of drainage. Since the passing of the Reclamation Act in 1902, the construction of drainage work by the United States Reclamation Service on seventeen projects located in thirteen western states represents about 12 percent of the expenditures from the Reclamation Fund. The portion for drainage has been spent during the last few years. This work has required an annual expenditure of about $1,000,000 or a total of $8,000,000 to July, 1922(1). The work completed is estimated to have reclaimed …
Effect Of Root-Rot Upon Sugar-Beet Seed Production, Louis F. Nuffer
Effect Of Root-Rot Upon Sugar-Beet Seed Production, Louis F. Nuffer
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Due to considerable loss through root-rot of mother beets while in storage during the winter of 1918-1919 the Amalgamated Sugar Company asked advice in regard to planting beets which had decay lesions on them. Would the beets yield seed if planted? How much seed would these beets yield as compared with healthy beets? Would the seed produced be injured by having been grown on decayed beets? It was felt that an experiment carried out with the above questions in view would bring out many facts upon which to base conclusions in answering the questions of the Sugar Company.
